Has anyone here tried one or both of these programs?
Thoughts on which is better?

I owned Railworks 2, which upgraded to Train Simulator 2012 - so far, I like it. The routes are rather European heavy, and the American offerings are kind of short - but barring that, it's got a nice selection of built-in content. Aftermarket, it seems almost everything for Railworks/Train Simulator costs money - but there is also a lot of quality offerings.
Now...if they could only offer the Empire builder route for it - from Chicago to Portland...to drive... that would be the ticket for me...
Sadly, I haven't tried Trainz 12 - so I cannot offer an opinion of it.
Trainz 12 is truly dreadful, go with TS2010.
RW3(TrainSimulator 2012) is the best sim out if you have the computing horsepower. The Horseshoe Route is excellent.
vs Eastern Kentucky in Trainz2010

Thanks
The 2 pics are a nice comparison.
Have you seen pics of the Mojave Sub built in route from Trainz 12? That route is pretty impressive. Also if you aren't familiar with Jointed Rail I would suggest taking a look at some of their stuff. They have some awesome locomotive models both freeware and payware as well as a great freeware rolling stock selection too.

The B40-8W and AP well cars are FREEWARE from Jointed Rail. The GP60M is included with the game.

I have a I7-920, Radeon 6950, 18 GB Ram and TS12 still doesn't run well. TS12 is really a bad program. If you drive in third person the assets pop in and out. There is absolutely no "draw distance". Unless you are a "fanboy" no one would recommend that dog.
If it were rated by gamers it would be a "fail".
I am told on the Trainz forum that it is my hardware.
TS2010 is the best Trainz version and will run all the Jointed Rail locos. That is one in the Eastern Kentucky.
I really like Trainz 2010 and it is a fun sim. Both sims have their virtues.
The Payware Rollins Pass 1915 from TrainzItalia with a Carson Car Shops 1870's Mogul
That route runs horribly in Trainz 12 but looks gorgeous in Trainz 2010.
TS2010 runs great on my old XP computer:
Alathon 64x2 Dual 3.01 Ghz2 Gb RamRadeon HD 5670
And TS 12 runs great on my i7 920 and 560 ti under windows 7 64 bit. You know it does you have seen the screen shots I have posted as well as ones posted from users that have lessor systems who also don;t have the issues you speak of.
