I recently acquired a Bachmann PCC Trolley from an E-bay store, 'new'. I couldn't wait to get it onto my layout & watch my Toronto Transit car (I'm in Toronto...) join my fleet. Well, it lit up nice & pretty, & the motor whirred away to beat the band - but she car, she no move.
A quick look inside showed the motor with a long shaft protruding, with a screw on the end, to mesh with a gear wheel in the gearbox. There were even 3 little guideholes around the opening to position the motor. What there wasn't, though, was a shelf to rest the engine on. Nor did the exploded diagram show that there ever was one.
So, a little head-scratching, and - voila! Two birds with one stone, including a use for that nicotine gum I keep getting for Christmas! (Sorry for the French, but I AM Canadian.) And of course the gum will dry rock hard, avoiding constant maintenance. But I will be replacing the light with a Rapido N light; no one wants to get on a dark streetcar, stopped at an intersection...
