Truing loco wheel sets
Posted by pathvet9 on Friday, March 25, 2011 11:27 AM

I know how to use the gauge tool and how to easily adjust rail car wheel sets but I am having trouble with an RS-1 loco that has one set of wheels slightly under-gauge. The gauge will stand alone if pushed down, wheras all the others slip freely in the gauge.

What I am concerned about is having to disassemble the plastic trucks, etc. to isolate the wheel so I can turn and slide it. Is there any other way to move the wheel on the axle with the truck in place?

Probably a newby question but i don't want to screw up what I have!  Dunce

What make of RS1 do you have? many of the trucks are very easily dissassembled especially to remove a wheelset.  Need to know what make to help you out.

It is an Atlas. The plastic side pieces on the trucks look way to delicate to "pop" off,  IMHO?  Ick!

The Atlas/ Kato truck side frames are held on by tangs up through the bottom truck cover. Don't try to pry them off without removal of the cover. P2K has basicall cloned this truck design and the same holds true. You can just remove the bottom truck cover and leav the sideframes. The wheelset will drop out for you to make the gauge adjustments. This is a very good drive that is used in these.

Bob - thanks so much for the advice. I will definitely try that and guess I can also weather the wheels while I have them off. Wondered how I was going to paint all my locos wheels, now I know!    Bow
