Good afternoon - looks like many will be in front of a TV this evening. I'm ready to be paid to root for either team - because whenever Kris or I get interested in a particular team it invariably bombs. We call Ice Skating on TV "Watching people fall over" because no matter how ell they have been doing up to the point we begin to watch, it's DOOM from then on! Pirate  We'll probably watch "Alister Cooke's America" on PBS later on.

TSF:

DerJohn, Cool loading dock. Was the building a kit?
... this one?

No, that's scratch, designed to fit a particular site, part of a removable view block to give access to tracks behind it. hides this that white vertical wall is part of the design-on-the-fly process I used, you can see the back wall of the building - it's all made from gas pump advertising sign plastic..

Ulrich: That's a very neat shot of the bridge on that type of module. How high are the ends?

the "Ghan" in Australia,
..from the one video I've seen of that, pretty flat and boring ( and no, I'm not thinking of the RR that crosses the Nul Arbor plain across the
Great Australian Bight" ) "Ghan" for Afghanistan IIRC, the video said it was built to access a hoped for trade link from Darwin or there-abouts to northern South Asia, if that isn't an oxymoron.Clown

Barry: Here's praying your cold will exit pronto! ...Likewise Jeff re your ankle. Barry, What is that thing in the photo? It looks like it's getting a re-charge, but doesn't appear that green.  Speaking of green, that tank car fire was at least 'green", it being ethanol and all!!! Good thing no-one was hurt. I wonder from how far away marshmallows could be toasted? Just so Chris has a  heads up, ye ken. Laugh

Jeremy:  Welcome back. Bummer on the job close out - What line of work would you be in? Any chance of a change?

Chris:

The new owner and his partner own papers in Mt. Vernon/Lisbon, Marion, Clarence/Lowden, Tipton, West Branch and West Liberty.
...same Tipton as Bill comes from, or is that a different State?

Well, the raiLink herald decals I tried yesterday didn't work out too well. I have to find some way of setting the inkjet printer ink so it will not run in the water-based decal-it goop, or in the soaking the decals have to go through before they are finished. I'm thinking as a first step I'll try "cooking" the ink by ironing the images before I apply the decal-it.  I thought of Dullcoat, but the decal-it goop has to get at the ink in order to absorb and lift the image into itself so the backing paper the image was printed on can be soaked and rubbed away.   I think I'll try printing something off on tracing paper so ther's less actual paper to get rid of anyway. It's tea time, so I'll have a green tea please and go to a window seat and watch the action in the yard. TTFN.

Sorry, shoulda specified. All of these communities are in the Great State of Iowa.

And, for kicks and giggles, I looked up ethanol in the 1996 North American Emergency Response Guidebook (most recent in my personal library). It do say, for fire to "isolate" for 800 meters (1/2 mile) in all directions and to "consider" initial evacuation of 1/2 mile.

THAT would be an awful darn long pole to stick the hot dogs and marshmellows on...

We had a Haz-Mat Ops Level refresher program last year, and the guy showed a video of an ethanol tank car exploding. I forget how far a chunk of it landed...pretty sure it was further than 1/2 mile...

THAT is why I was always quite content with Haz-Mat Awareness Level training. I figured I'd just go "be aware" of the situmacation from somewhere else...like maybe the next county over!

Afternoon all.

Almost done with my Spanish paper. I almost have the three required pages done, and I have 840 of the 1000 required words done. Hopefully finishing it shouldn't be too hard.

Ulrich and Jeff, I know what you guys mean about not being able to get stuff done. I have exhausted my modeling budget for the year, and there's a lot of stuff I need. Luckily, I'll be back at work in May.
That, and I procrastinate. A lot...

G, you can't be selfish in asking others for prayers. The only way one can be selfish is not praying for others when asked to.

Over the past few days, I've done some upgrading to my website. You can check it out (link in a minute), and then give me feedback and suggestions (would be greatly appreciated) by using the newly added contact form on the "Contact Us" page. Here's the link to the new website, using the new link shortener. Sorry, but the [url] tags don't work with the bit.ly shortener, so you'll just have to copy and paste.
bit.ly/tristaterail

Well, I better get ready to go, cause I'm going to a friend's house for the Superbowl. Don't really have a favorite team this year.

Catch ya later.

Coffee in a SUNNY SOUTHERN mug, please.

***Der, that is a cool looking silo complex. Well done!Yes

Horses: I've euthanized more dogs, cats, and farm critters than I care to think about. The most difficult by far was our old horse Sandy. Perhaps it does have to do with how many years you spend with them and that you develop a sort of partnership, riding through the countryside together. And each has a quite different personality. Sandy was our only horse who could open "lift & slide" type locks inside the barn to let other horses out. I still miss her presence & winney when I would walk out the front door. I suppose you just have to be a horse person to understand.

Sprayed some fencing for the wife's (HO) house that has a backyard pool. That house represents a good friend of hers Stanley (not to be confused with my brother, Stan). Then I got out the can of dull coat and more liquid poured out around the cap than sprayed out. Oh well.

Picked up some neat little benches on the-bay for around the hospital. Now for the wait until they arrive.

Cheers! Cowboy Rob

Hey Everyone, Zoe can I get some coffee, a patty melt on rye extra onions and fries.

Well it is a beautiful day here in the Smoky Mountains, upper 40's and not a cloud in sight, but that is supposed to change tonight with snow Monday through Thursday. Went out and walked a part of the fence line, the wife's horse got out last Friday, that is the second time in a week. The first time he got loose we found him a couple of streets over in another pasture with another horse, seems he made a friend because sure enough he was back there again. I thought I had fixed the fence so he couldn't get out but he must have found a bad spot in the barb wire some where else. Since the Dr. took me off of work and the surgery last February, I am just so out of shape, that I can not walk the entire fence line. My oldest daughter and her boyfriend walked it for me last week when they were up from Charlotte, but they missed the big hole that was there from a fallen tree that was the route of his first escape, so who knows what else they missed.

Galaxy; I hope that things start to improve for the MIL and that work helps TOH get a break from the stress this is all putting on her.

Ulrich; Hate to hear about the house and all, I know this economy has been tough on alot of people, and I hope your situation improves soon. I was diagnosed with cancer in Oct. of 2007 and they took my right kidney, but the cancer kept coming back in my bladder and I missed a lot of work, luckily we had AFLAC cancer and short term disability insurance. Then in Oct. of 2009 the Dr. put me out of work and in Feb. 2010 I had surgery to remove my bladder, then there was chemo followed up by radiation, and I have still not returned to work and I don't believe I will be able to return to my old career, I drive, load and, unload an 11 car auto transporter. My employer has me on medical leave and still covers my medical insurance for me, but I doubt that I can physically do the job anymore.

The Wife and I are originally from Calif. she has always been an artist and I just love to travel and the adventure of seeing new historical places, so the thought of buying a house and settling down in one spot has not been a priority. We have lived all over the country but 16 years ago when our youngest daughter was born we started to slow down, My wife thought she wanted to be a geologist so 12 years ago we moved here to North Carolin so she could attend Western North Carolina University, it wasn't long before she realized that geology wasn't her thing so she took a four year break from school. She did eventually go back and got her BA in painting and ceramics, she is now almost done with her Masters in Fine Arts with a ceramics and Sculpture concentration. Just before I got sick we started looking to buy a house but that was put on hold and we eventually lost our SUV to repossession because of missing so much work.

Anyways the place we are currently renting is an old farm house that has major structural problems, a huge 8 stall barn 11 acres of pasture and a 20' x 24' work shop that is the wife's glass and ceramics studio and my wood shop. For Christmas my wife gave me 30' of atlas code 83 flex track and cork road bed, plus a 100.00 Lowe's gift card for bench work. She also gave me "permission" to use part of the studio as long as the layout could be moved when we have large projects going on. So I have drawn up plans for a modular layout using six 4' x 2' modules one 4' x 4' module and one 2' x 2' drop in for access to the open center, the entire layout has a foot print of 8' x 12'  and if everything works I plan on building a rolling storage rack that will hold all the modules when the layout is being stored. I am also planning ahead so that if we do get to buy are own place soon the layout can be expanded to an around the room layout.

Wow I have really been rambling on here so, I had better end this and will give everyone a shout later.

Nothing much happening here. I ended up replacing the blower fan above the layout (been going 24/7 for three years) and while I was next to it I vacuumed out the filter on the A/C. Broke a HO Scale station into several pieces when I knocked it off the shelf over the layout. I'll get around to putting it back together some day. I won't have any idea of what's going on with the ball game as it comes on a local channel here and I don't get any local channels. Yeah, Dish Network makes a lot of noise about how they get local channels but they don't tell you that you have to get an upgrade and pay extra for them. I'm paying enough for the America's Top 250 plan that I have now. I can't afford to jack it up from $84 to over $95. My rate WAS $79. They kicked it up by $5 this month. Amazing how that happened just as they tacked on 8 Starz channels free for a year. Just shows that nothing is free. Well enough about that. I took the time earlier to apply some water-slide Midland Gulf decals to a couple of F units. An Athearn F7-A and a Bachmann FT-A. The F7 will later get a L&A decal across the nose. I also have a Bachmann flatcar with a container load that's been boxed up for some time . I had planned to trade it to another modeler for a couple of items he has but so far nothing has happened on that front. If it hasn't been sent off by the end of the month it'll go back on the shelf.

Jeffrey, I may not have 250 channels, but I do have have 80 on cable {more often than not more than I can really watch anyway}, NO special "pay to view" channels {which I find tend to rerun movies to death anyway} AND RoadRunner Highspeed internet for $105/month. I have 7 local channels including one local news all day long network, and 4.5 National news all day long channels. The "point 5" on the nat. news runs paid programming  or certain documentaries sometimes as well, so only offers nat. news all day long some days/times. I am quite happy with the price we pay for what we get. All channels come in clear as a bell. SO I get 80 channels and high speed internet reliably for $105/month.

Afternoon folks.

I've been looking at the Hornby site and found some cool buildings I may try and get a hold of one of these days. It's British style stuff, which is what I'm modeling. Right now I've got a property set up with a gas station / auto repair building on it with a few trees. What I was figuring was to the other side of the road, nearest my rail lines is to have a station with a parking lot that went and turned into a road. Then on the other (Southern) direction was going to be a fallen down building and an old, badly dis repaired barn with an old traction engine inside covered in rust. In the same lot was going to be a lumber mill with logs in the back for sawing and maybe a scratch-built sawmill. A siding nearby is also in the planning too, but there are no promises.

Hey guys

Just working on some homework before the ballgame starts. Of course you know who I'm pulling for. I showed my team spirit a bit at work. I was the only male working and the girls went around drawing smiley faces all over the place. I went around and drew a cheese head on all of them. I also hid all the black markers, and wrote "buy green markers"  after erasing all the black writing on the boards with yellow.

Jeff, don't you have a set of rabbit ears you could use to get the local channels to watch the game? IIRC, there is a way to use a metal coat hanger as a set.

Chris, Are you putting away all you CNW stuff, since it is Green and Yellow?

Garry, NIce scrapyard. Sorry to hear about your mother's friend; good luck with the new grandchild.

2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.

We have cable out here too but with fewer channels. About sixty channels I think before it gets into extra packages. I used to have cable TV but got fed up with it going out all the time. No point in paying for service that was iffier than a politicians promises. I still have Internet service through cable and have to put up with the outages that still seem to plague the system. My internet service is $47 a month and is about the slowest broadband they have. 1.68 mbps download speed and 0.25 mbps upload speed.

I’m back and looking at a new monitor. Oh! Warm spinach and artichoke dip yum. LCD widescreen. Statistically a much better monitor than I had. Of course, like I said the other was about 6 years old. New view looks about the same except shorter and wider. Since the other was a 17” regular LCD and this is a 20” widescreen LCD my actual viewing is smaller. Funny how that works ain’t it. Geeks at Best Buy said I would have to adjust the settings to keep the screen from being stretched and giving everything a fat look on my 5 year old windows XP computer, but the actual viewing at the worst would be the same size if the computer wasn’t capable of going widescreen. I said I didn’t want like the TV with the stretch in the middle fattening things up. They blabbered some technical mumbo jumbo (part of which I swore sounded like a Mexican Restaurante) and said if I had any problems they would come out and set it up. For a fee. I smiled and said thanks I’ll think about it and left. Went back to Sam’s Club and bought the same monitor for $20 cheaper, came home plugged it in and it worked right off the bat. Set the screen to higher resolution, still not the 1600X900 recommended though, my computer only goes 1440X900. Aaaaanyway. The screen is full and no fat stuff. It fills from the sides somehow and blurs the part with no picture on the edges because of something the manual explained but I didn’t try too hard to understand. It was irrelevant anyway as it works just fine. Chalk up yet another reason to dismiss whatever the Geek Squad at Best Buy has to say in Springfield, Illinois. Oddly enough, the manual was online. Yup the setup disk took you online. Now, how...if the monitor wouldn't work with the computer and you needed to check things, would you know what to do? Or is there something blindingly obvious I'm missing?

Chris- In a nutshell the first responders course I took was…….run away as you’re calling it in.

Jeffery- Isn’t it Dish Network that claims they never raise rates and it’s cable that keeps raising and you should switch? HmmmmHmm. Do you think they may have been bitten by the cable snake?!!!

I have about 80 channels, including all the locals (better’n half I don’t watch and a whole lot I’ve never even clicked on) and , like Galaxy, no pay per view. Oddly they advertise it. Maybe we do, but I don’t know how to do it, nor do I care. We also have cable internet and one stupid movie channel that, again, I hardly watch but Brenda does from time to time, for about $90 tax included. Like Jeff, the rates just went up, but only $2. I would get rid of the Cinemax crap, but Brenda watches maybe 3 or 4 movies a month and $10 is cheaper than that many rentals or pay-per-views. If we get it.

Welp, don’t know what time the game starts so I’ll zip on out and head downstairs before all the ruckus starts. OH! Hot wings! I have my drill bits setting by the basement door. That was what I needed to lay some more track to drop the feeder wires through, but kept forgetting and was too lazy to walk back up stairs to get them from the garage. So I’ll just shut up and go play now.

WOW!!!! Talk about HOT wings!!!

Either them or DirecTV. Dish says they won't raise theirs for another two years (2013).

Couldn't remember either. Mom had Dish for a while when she lived in the country. If you are like I would have been, and you had the same reception issues, the actual dish would not have made it a year without a brick thrown through it, let alone two. Same with Direct from which she switched from after Dish swore up and down they were so much better than Direct. Hogwash. Couldn't tell the difference except for the name on the dish itself. know you have a different provider and that makes all the difference in the world, but we have no issues with cable TV or internet at all. We have a great provider. Wouldn't have a satellite if they gave it to me for free. I'm thinking of going phone now too. Power goes out....cell phone. I works fine withh 911. Trust me, I know.Ashamed

Funny thing, on the edge of town is all the satellite dishes for the cable. And what do you suppose is right there amongst 'em? Maybe a picture tomorrow if I remember.

Evening Folks, why is ever one sitting around the big screen in the corner?

Flo, just a Beer in a frosted Monon Mug please.

One good thing about working for a small company, they decided to close early for the Super Bowl. That is really the only good thing that happen today. Had 2 customers and closed both small deals, and that was pretty much it. Had 3 other customers after that looking for stuff we don't sale. Lady looking for something to hold remote controls on the side of a bed, Water Bed Mattress (we don't sell them) for a teenager and headboards, again something we don't carry. Other than that I stared out the window most of the day.

Ron You still in N.C? I was station at Ft Bragg and loved the area. I hope you are doing better with the cancer problem. I bet you miss being on the road. I have thought about becoming a truck driver but really don't know how to get started in the field.

Chris Far as hanging my underwear for all to see, I did nothing wrong far as the house goes. When I bought the house 20 years ago I was approved for $150,000, I spent $97,500. So it was not like I was pushing my budget. But, far as going to the Media, I am sure it would be a waste of time. If I had recorded the phone call's I might have stood a chances. But, being a trusting idiot I did not.

At this point, the only thing I can do is throw money at the problem. So I will be sending them $1000.00 Monday and start listing some stuff for sale on Crag's List. Anyone need a Snap On Box? Big Smile

Galaxy Hows the back doing? With the MIL problems I have forgotten to ask.

  Train Front

DT 400 is still working right. I now afraid to unplug it from the DB 150.

Cleared a few cars from the RIP track (my desk) Next I need to start working on the Engines. Have 6 of them. PK 2000 SD 7 became a runaway, need to get the PR 3 up and running to see what happened with the decoder. I did not turn off the DC function so I am 95% sure that is the problem.

Athearn SD 50's. Both need new motors and I have some Jay gave me. Just to lazy to install them.

Stewart F 9's. Need to test there motors, but I am 95% sure there motors are bad. Both started making a racket then ate there decoders.

Well, I will see you all Monday.

Funny. My satellite signal comes in clear and strong even during most storms. Only time I lose it is when the clouds are so thick day turns to night almost.

Goooooooooooooooooooooooooood (as long as the Steelers win) Evening.

THAT was the deadest "super bowl party" I've covered yet. I swear they must've sprayed the crowd with Prozac when they came in the door. Even the photogs from the "real newspapers" were trying to find something, ANYTHING, to shoot.

I left at halftime, heard the Steelers' TD on the radio, then the local sports station faded out...and I heard what sounded like acordians and Mexicans... Thanks to the wonders of digital television, the stations THAT are carrying the game...aren't coming in tonight. I guess the little band of snow out there is FUBAR-ing the signal...

"Chris- In a nutshell the first responders course I took was…….run away as you’re calling it in."Yup. I was also taught to "...go as far as the first dead cop (think canary in a coal mine), then back-up a mile." A Glow-Worm I ain't!

VINCENT: I cheer for the Packers...against anybody but the STEELERS. Been a fan too long to switch sides now!

CUDAKEN: Don't get me wrong, I wasn't saying you've done anything wrong...just sayin' the local media types could put you under a very uncomfortable microscope and perform a quite thorough rectal exam in the process. Then again, if they are on a jihad against financial institutions... hard to say. Good luck to you in your situation.

Welp, I 'spose I'll see if I can find the game, or at least frequent updates somehow...

Chris

Was there a Football Game today?

If there was one I missed it, yawn Big Smile. Now if it was the old Monon Game I would have watched it. (there really was a Monon Football Game)

Trains ran great tonight!  While as a whole I am not a fan of Athearn RTR engines, my UP Dash 9 is a great performer! Had it hauling a 30 car coal train and it was being chased by a Monon 36 car mixed freight train powered by 2 PK 1000 F 3's.

Train night was good. Time to eat some fried Chicken and Greek Salad. Dinner

 Later

Evenin' Folks!

Janie just a decaf for me please...  Say, whats all the shouting going on in the back....  The Packers won something?  Huh?  I can't hear you over the racket.  Stupid Bowl???  OH Super Bowl!  Was THAT today???  Gee I missed it again....WhistlingStick out tongueSmile, Wink & Grin  I take it the Bills weren't it it this year?  Didn't think so...

OK, so I actually did watch some of it at my son's house tonight.  Managed to endure the ridiculous commercials (man they get dumber every year!) for the first half and then came home before the people at the mics started screaming.  Yep, during the official rehashing of what we already knew happened in the first half.  "Well Mel, if the Steelers had been able to cash in on a couple of those great passes and they hadn't gotten picked off they just might be ahead right now.....  You see it's really a matter of points...."  Yeah, Duh!  I wonder how much the guy that draws the circles and arrows on the still photo of the play we just saw gets paid???  How about the guy who puts that purple line of the screen for us?  Anybody remember Football when the uniforms actually got muddy?  Oops, here comes Vinnie...  Oh nothin' just having some fun, that's all.  OK. I'll be quiet....

We took Son's MIL out to dinner for her Birthday tonight pre-game.  I had a 12 oz. petite NYS Strip.  Brought over half of it home to gnaw on for a couple days....  Can't eat nearly like I used to.  You'd think I'd lose weight.

Prayers for all in need, and for all of you to stay safe and warm!

Good evning Guys.

It was a heck of a game, but the Packers win!! Injuries and all. The torphy that bears my namesake (I really was named after Vince Lombardi)

Anyone else notice that the singing of the national anthem was botched? And the halftime show looked like some alien dance party...

Ken, that's almost un-american to not watch the superbowl. lol, but then I don't watch baseball...

Anyways off to celebrate. talk to you guys later.

Vincent

Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....

2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.

You mean that caterwauling right before the kickoff when everybody was standing up with their hands over their hearts???  I did notice many of the players were grimacing and rolling their eyes.  THAT was the National Anthem????  They must have rewritten it since I learned it.....

You sure that was the half time show?  I saw some commercials for some new films earlier....Whistling  Mattel meets the big city or something like that.  What I can't believe is the number of people who can't understand why I don't watch TV!

Didn't catch the halftime show...but 'Shore NUFF! on the botched Anthem. I've heard high school kids THAT have done a much, much, much better job...and didn't botch the words.Black Eye I heard the guys on FOX Sports Radio "cramming" the half-time show. Doesn't sound like I missed much there.

I did like the Volkswagen commercial. The rest of them pretty much...*** CENSORED*** sucked.

Oh, and Rerun says he needs to wash my mouth out with soap for saying ALL of those words his Grandma (my mom) said to never say...Whistling

Bill - you beat me again!

Good Morning Everyone,

I woke up in the middle of the night - in time to turn on the TV and watch the Super Bowl game. It was funny to watch a football match without interruptions - no commercials at this end of the Big Pond! I must admit that I was not really thrilled by the game.

Zoe, just a coffee and buttered toast & jam, please.

John, standard height of a module is just 10 cm or about 4 ", unless you build up a "mountain". That´s not much, but sufficient to build a plausible scenery in N scale, I think.

Ron - I joined the Diner Gang about a year and a half ago and have learned that the times are pretty rough for all of us, wherever we are in this crazy world. It is either health problems or financial reasons which provide obstacles to our "pursuit of happiness". We all have our own share of worries. It helped me quite a lot to have found people in here, who care - that´s priceless in these days!

You all have a good start into the new week!

Good Morning,

Busy weekend for me, I spent about 14 hours working on the grain elevator corner in the layout.  I’m building it on 3/16 foam board then I’ll install it in the corner. I laid the track, installed ballast, ground cover, bumpers, dirt lot in the back and a gravel drive for the trucks.  I had a dozen all metal semaphores that I painted last night.  Saturday we got about 8” of snow all at once. Now we are heading into a deep freeze this weeks with highs in the low teens.

Bob, you might have to get a copy of Norton on disk.

Rob, great pictures!

Ken you should call the nearest military base and see if they have a civilian lawyer on staff.  I’ve done this in the past and I didn’t get free services, but I got everything half price.

I’m a little behind so I’ll be in the back catching up on posts.
