Wind is picking back up.

I am dying to see what Rays machine shop will look like when he's finished. But I'm afraid if I hang around too much while he's working on it....I really will die!

Looks like Ray needs what Brenda has. One of these http://blujay.com/item/Original-Dammit-Doll-Blujay-10050400-1753843

The doll wouldn't stand a chance around here!!! Super Angry............  You can hang around, but just stay out of the line of fire....WhistlingSigh  I hope to have some photos of the progress tomorrow.  The problem is you have to thread the belts through openings that are a fraction of an inch wide and do this this with less than an inch in any direction get get fingers or a tool in there to do it.....

Storm is just about to arrive in the Finger Lakes.  My son should be walking out where he works and getting in his car for a 20 mile drive home.  Hope he is careful!  Right now it is just a light snow without much wind, but within a hour it should be cranking up big time if the map is correct!

[Edit]

[Breaking News..........................]   (BEEP< BEEP< BEEP) Tomorrow has been canceled!  So far the Rochester Cable Channel is listing 42 School Closings for tomorrow...  That is just about all of them in the area I think.  The Finger Lakes is Closed!

Hey guys. Quick stop before bed.

Spent the last few hours trying to find upgraded a source of upgraded axles for my '94 GT. I have ABS on my car so I was trying to find one with the ring (looks like a gear mounted on the axle end before the wheel studs) on it. After about 2 hours of looking; I didn't find any with 28 splines, but some that had them for 31 spline. I was about to mark up a 31-spline assembly on my junkyard parts list, but then I found an old magazine article that showed that the ring was removable and just had to be pressed on and off. talk about a "doh!" moment. Superior is the only manufacturer of the axles that I am aware of that have axles with the special seat for the ABS ring. I still have to get subframes before I think of axles. and slicks (I do have drag radials, but am not using them with stock axles)

JR, I'll check which ones I have tommorow. I'm guessing there is a number on them somewhere that will tell me which ones I have.

Ken, Digitrax is about an hour east from me, mobile's about hour and a half the other way.

Jeff, from experience working at a fast food joint, it's not always cause your a senoir. Don't know how Captain D's works, but where I work it's a 10% discount that any cashier can use on anyone. Aside from senoirs (which work classifies as anyone 50 or over; wait, I'm not helping am I lol); I've used it on members of the military, girls that I though were attractive (provided they were by themselves Laugh), and friends of mine. I've had a few girls use it on me , but let's just say they were usually the girls I wouldn't use it on lol.

Blizzard and snow stuff, wait till sume and us gulf coasters will probably have some troubles of our own (hurricanes) and want the diner to be up north.

Vincent

Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....

2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.

The State of Iowa is CLOSED.

Gooooooooooooooooooooooooood Evening, bucket of hot apple cider please 'n thank-you.

Good grief Charlie Brown! Two women have gone into labor. One somewhere between Midland and Wyoming (in Jones County). Midland Ambulance is having a tough time getting to her. The paramedic ambulance out of Anamosa is slogging it's way there, with a County snow plow. The plan is to at least get her and baby to the hospital in Anamosa. Just north of Mechanicsville, Adam-3 is trying to get to a woman who is preparing to squeeze out No. 4.... and typically, the more kids they have, the faster they come! The Cedar County dispatcher is trying to get plows from Jones County (it's just inside their side of the line), Cedar County, and Linn County lined up so this momma and baby can get to St. Luke's hospital in Cedar Rapids.

It sounds like Mechanicsville Fire is using their brush truck to break-through and cut a path for the ambulance.

Makes me glad I'm not in EMS no more!!!!!

While the Nat. Guard was mobilized (20 soldiers, deployed to five cities), the closest contingent is in Iowa City.

The band of "heaviest snow" shifted north...and we're right in the middle of it. We even had "thunder snow," much to Rerun's dismay and dislike. It seems to be coming from the southeast...almost as though TODD was sending me his snow! I just shoveled-out Rerun's trail...again. The Wife thought they'd just do without. Had I not shoveled, she would've been up to her waist trying to get through. Rerun would've had an even tougher time. As it is, most of his trail is now a trench...the top of which is a good foot to foot-and-a-half higher than him!!!

The Wife has a "snow day" as the college she w**ks at already closed for tomorrow. I think the whole state has closed. Most of the highways are marked "travel not advised" and "tow ban in effect." The local TV weather geeks have added "whooooooooooooooooooooop whoooooooooooooooooooop whoooooooooooooooooooooooooop" Star Trek alert sounds to their weather break-in spots. The National Weather Speculators say if you get stranded...you will die a slow, miserable death.

Up on the UP mainline, a signal maintainer is stranded in his truck at one of the cross-over points. 2nd-trick dispatcher DWU asked him if his gas tank was "full enough" for him to sit awhile. 3rd-trick just came on, he's supposed to have the first train through stop and pick the poor guy up.

Winter in Iowa...ya gotta hate it just a little...

To those who are in the eventual path of this "weather event," you're in for a real treat...

Chris

Hey folks. Snowing bad here. My home has now gotten the nickname of blizzard central.

A friend of ours who works for the fire department called. they got a call and couldn't respond to it. That's how bad it is.

Der- Thanks, I got a few more. Seemed fitting because of the snow. That one was an old flatcar and caboose design I got from trainmanTy a few years ago. I was trying to get a shot of the entire plow and a freight car behind it with sand. It was an attempt at a freelance British plow out of American outline equipment.

Snow Report- Button Down the hatches for those of you in this thing's path. Wind gusts are 50 mph and there is thunder snow. All the roads out by me are shut down, haven't seen a plow for a few hours now. Chicago Streets and San. just shut down Lake Shore drive. Some people have been stuck out there for something like 5 hours now. Tomorrow the only way to move around out by my place is a snowmobile or a big 4x4 with aired down super swampers. And I mean air down, 2-3 PSI. That Powerwagon won't stand a chance. The snow is not bad, but there is a drift out there near as tall as me (5'11")

Button down and hang tight.

Evenin' again...

Flo just a decaf for me this evening.  I'll go sit in the back booth and get warm.

I have decided i can take just about 45 minutes of dealing with those %*&% little belt thingies!!!Angry  I did about an hours wirth tonight and almost threw the whole %^*&% thing across the room...  You glue one side of the belt in place, then try to glue the other end up where it has to go and the first end comes undone......  You need five hands to get them to stay put while they dry in place and the sticky stuff they put on the belt is completely worthless.  It sticks just long enough for you to bend the belt up and try to stick the other end in place then it unsticks.  Actually it does the same thing with AC, pliobond, and every other glue I have in stock.  You also need to have 4 hands and there is no place to move tools around in the tiny space you are working in.  So push it and the whole thing comes apart....  Don't ask!  OK, rant over.  I glued a couple ends in place and hopefully by tomorrow morning I may be able to get the other end of the belt in place and make it stay put!

Ray:

Sol (the note between Fa and La),

...always thought "La, a note to follow So" a cop out by O&H. Since I'm not a librettist, I have an excuse for not being able to come up with a clever "La note"  "La, the second half of Voi" ( Pronounced Vaw) springs to mind however; and carries the meter, more or less.MusicMusicMusicMusic

Now John the note is spelled Sol.  It is the only note of the scale that has 3 letters....  Remember the Major Scale?  (Do, re, mi, fa, sol, la, ti, do)  Sixth Graders could not pass my class until they could spell it right....WhistlingSmile, Wink & GrinLaugh  And don't foget your Music Theory class....  Do is also known as the Tonic, Sol is the Dominant, a 5th. above (Or the 12th. above being the first harmonic at a different pitch).  Remember the overtone series created by every note....  Fa on the otherhand is also known as the Subdominant being a 5th. below the the tonic.  If you use the dominant created naturally to create a new pitch, and continue doing it, eventually (12 later to be exact) you will end back at your original note.  This creates the Chromatic Scale first explained by Pythagoras.  Also known as the circle of 5ths.  Big Smile

Huh? OK, OK I'll be quiet...  Sheesh

Hopefully by tomorrow night I will have the first room of belt drive tools more or less finished.

Later!

Good evening Diners: Just a bit of snow down here, an appetizer is what the TV weather guesser called it this evening!  I'll have the Shrimp and Scallop pilaf, and a large JR Regular please, and a booth seat where I can search for my credit card to take care of your orders...should anyone make it in through the storm, that is. Well I guess Ulrich  will for sure, so Chloe get a large Hot Chocolate and a Whisky Mac ready for him please ....

Ulrich: Hope the lung / breathing thing is quickly solved Angel

It´ll probably takes weeks for the odor to disappear. It is much better by now, but you can still smell it.
...sounds like the last curry I made!   We can get some colours of acrylics in rattle cans, but I'm not impressed by them. I'd rather use the stir and mix. ( I haven't seen the Krylon acrylics JR mentioned - but that's a good brand.)  I hadn't thought of the hair dryer option, but I use one to speed the plough on airbrushed items. Our acrylics / latex aren't pungent by any means, and we've done a great many interior walls in the stuff without having to take motel rooms! Speaking of Niagara Falls, I see where "the Royal Newly -weds" will be coming to Canada shortly after the wedding - "Honeymoon in Niagara Falls"?????  Clown
Minimum radius on those is 11", which should be OK for N scale.
...should be, but check that the trucks are swinging freely, and that the couplers don't bind.  My container cars won't follow a Kato SD40 through such a curve unless either the cars or the loco have a long shank coupler. This tends to look weird.

Barry: Sweet! Kris' comment was "It's made of real metal then!"  Good strategy though. I was thinking last night, you'll have over 12 feet of snow down by the close of play Wednesday. That's what? - over a foot of rain equivalent - what happens in the Spring?

Jeff:

Good morning. It's 63° and the storms are running rampant. Chance of rain today is 60%. Low tonight is projected to be 21°.
...our TV weather guesser last night said this system easily  covered half of the North American continent! Shucks! That's got to be almost bigger than Texas! The rain going back up? That's heavy! Brit expression might be "It's stotting down!" Now you mention slow Dodge wipers, I seem to recall the wipers on the push-button automatic Dodge station wagon in which we left Toronto around 1970 were kinda slow.
But I don't look all that old for 50!
..don't feel too bad Jeff, the banks here start their Seniors' Discount Accounts at 50! (Basically I've not paid bank charges on normal chequing accounts for 20 years.Thumbs Up

Johnnboy:

I ordered some of those Chinese trees they have on E-bay. I think they will have to be topped up with loose foliage but the price was good and they looked quite good.  Will let you all know when they arrive and my opinion on them for what it's worth.
I'd be interested in your opinion, as I've eyed those for some time. Specifically I'm looking for a reasonable facsimile of an N scale fruit tree. I bought these   a while ago (city gent must be Dept. of Ag, looking lost; but he gives a sense of scale Laugh) They aren't bad, but not cheap either. I can't afford to do the complete orchard with those.

Ray:

Bama:

...and here's CSX 8450 easing into it!

Ron:

So Mobile Al. do you think we will be here for Marde gra.
...doubt it, as that's in March (8th. is Shrove Tuesday, and St. Edward the Confessor's Day; patron saint of what we'll have to call my High School ) - but we could hang in the South and take it in, how's that for forward planning Ulrich? 12x8 is nice territory, now if you shift to N.....Whistling

Vincent:

John, never heard of that movie.
...if you have a video store that caters to older (1980s) movies, they may be able to get a copy. The incident I mentioned is a very brief clip in it, but the whole movie is a fun watch, set in South Africa. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0080801/ tells you more.

Rob:

***Der, finally took a look at the extra stuff under the magnifier. Should be able to use most, if not all of it. I still haven't made it to the PO yet.
...Good, glad you can make something of it. And don't even think about getting to the PO in THIS!

TSF: Great looking plough, and quite the shot angle too!

That's about it for now, Goodnight all, and God Bless. Prayers for all in need of Safety on the highways, Healing, Comfort, prosperity and Peace.Angel ht

What else? OK, the blizzard seems to have tapered off. Not without losing power for about 2 seconds. enough to shut down the TV's and of course the computers WHICH for some reason I hadn't shut off yet. Was pretty much on my way in to do it like I said I was going to. All that to say now, I've turned on the computer and the screen is all faded and pinkish. Like there is a color missing. Green possibly because that is the only color on the menu I can't seem to do anything with. Already rebooted. Maybe 1 more time then restart tomorrow.

So Alabama huh. Well, I'll be. Looks like that dixie horn is going to get used after all.

Stopped at Circle K to get gas this morning. It's one of the cheaper places in town. Still $3.04 a gallon for regular unleaded. For that price and with the old battleship I'm driving there should be an oil company rep out there cheering me on. Van backfired through the exhaust when I started it up after getting gas. Made a very loud ka-boom. Literally scared the$1****$2out of some guy. Well, I guess when you gotta go you gotta go. And he went!

Evenin' folks!

Flo, I'll have the hot roast beast sandwich, side order of fries (with some beef gravy on them), and a trip to the salad bar tonight.  To drink?  Oh, just a cup of decaf please.

Nothing more than a light flurry here today. But THAT is supposed to change by Midnight.  Heavy snow will start in the wee hours.  Six to ten inches should fall by morning with another 4 to 6 inches tomorrow.  Then taper off to flurries with 1 to 2" tomorrow night.  Thursday will be dig out day for me.  "Let it Snow, Let it Snow, Let it Snow....."

I moved and stacked 5 wheelbarrow loads of firewood today, and I am exhausted.  Most had to be unfrozen and dug out of the pile, then run the wheelbarrow through the accumulated snow back over to the porch....  Maybe next year I should get it all piled before Winter sets in???Whistling  I also looked up 25 or 30 NMRA members phone #s online to update our records.

Tonight I am spending some time on projects down cellar in the train room.  Really!

Stay dry and warm (and safe) out there.

Wife really liked the hospital area, so there are no do-overs. As long as she is pleased, that is all that matters. She likes her U30B CSX loco, so I'll work on replacing it with an identical DCC/sound version.

Rainging cats & dogs outside, (or on themStorm). Heading back down to the train room. As long as the power stays on, it's good MRRing weather, IMO.

Cheers! Rob

Went to Captain D's for lunch today. Without even batting an eyelash the girl behind the counter rang me up on the senior citizens discount. Why do I feel so old all of a sudden? I know I have some gray and some wrinkles. OK, a lot of gray and some wrinkles a mountain climber could get lost in. But I don't look all that old for 50!

 Evening folks.

 Flo, a Beer please.

Well No Snow, just sleet! Darn, I was looking forward to some snow.

Not ready to sale my HO stuff just yet. But if I do I will let you folks know. If I lose the house, Simon 1966 said I can store the train and stereo gear at his house. Besides, never know what the future holds.

Rob I have some newer engines as well, GE 6000, Dash 9, SD40-2 and a couple of SD 50's.

Darn Digitrax DT-400 is acting up again! While I can control all the functions, the Liquid Crystal Display is not working right. Only thing that shows is the power reading for the two engines. Everything else is missing! Guess it is going back to Florida again for a vacation.

See you all later, heading to the DCC section of the site.

Good Afternoon All,

Snow has quit for now about 6" down so far and a bunch more due tonight. I'm getting ready to head out between sessions of the white stuff. I'd just as soon it stay all snow and not turn to ice/rain tomorrow - what a mess THAT would be.

Vincent - went to 5 flags several times while I was stationed in Pensacola. It was dirt and no fences on the perimeter. If someone helped a bit you could sail right off the track in back (big wood retaining wall in front) and some nights that would happen and a bit later the hitee would come roaring back over the berm and resume (or more likely retaliate). At the time they had a "foreign car class" and my friend ran his big Healey (Austin Healey 3000) and did very well until they banned sports cars. He'd only gotten in because the car had a back seat and he claimed it was a convertible sedan LOL. Yep - those are the Mc Henry devices I'm looking for - specifically the #53's for the 6 wheel truck. Let me know if you want to sell or swap for them.

Jeff - glad you're on higher ground. Might want to check that life raft anyway?

Gotta run - want to beat the next front home.   CUL, J.R.

BLIZZARD!!!!! RUN!!! HEAD FOR INDOORS!!!! IT'S A FLIPPIN BLIZZARD!!!!!

Can't see to the street, the neighbors are GONE I tell ya GONE!!!

The owner of the restaurant called and said she's not opening. Feels it'd just be a waste of time and dangerous for even me to try to get there. I have to drive halfway across town (5 blocks I think) and the other guy has to come from Springfield. He wouldn't make it.

The roads have gone something called level 3. All roads other than the interstate and RT66 (why 66 ? I don't know) are closed and it is against the law to be on them after 9 pm. Never heard of that before. Nobody in their right mind would be out NOW, let alone after dark and I ain't skeered a nothin.

Haven't tried the snow behemoth yet. It would be pointless. It's chompin at the bit in the garage. Tomorrow. Brenda seems most concerned with her footprints disappearing and not being able to see the front step. I said it's concrete. It ain't going anywhere. The lack of her footprints I ignore.

The lights have flickered a couple times this afternoon but so quick it makes you wonder if they did or you blinked. But to be on teh safe side I think I'll just shut down the ole 'puter. The wind is howling so it's possible we lose power. The generator does run though so who knows.

Fine, we'll  go Alabama. Sigh Well, at least it stopped raining out here. However, we have a problem in the railroad. Progress has been halted due to this weird thing called 7th grade. Man, cant wait till summer.Cool

Hey guys.

Mobile, eh? That's about an hour and a half away from where I live.

Right now I'm drilling and taping the styrene truck mounting insert so I can use athearn trucks on a few AHM covered hoppers. I had just got back from the bank and autozone (MSD distributor cap and rotor) and the weather was nice when I left. On the way from back from the autozone to the bank (there's a dental office between them) it got really foggy and windy. Could this be the same system Jeff is going through?

Jeff, Have you used RainX on your windshield? The stuff works really well for me, only problem I have with it is that it seems to come off after a few months. I need to put a new application of it on, but before mine wore off I could drive along at 35 in moderately heavy rain without using wipers because it would roll right off; only in pretty heavy rain would I have to turn the wipers on. Might help your van with the slower wipers.

Robby, Good luck with the RR job.

John, never heard of that movie.

JR, When you were in Pensacola did you ever go to Five Flags speedway or the Emerald coast dragway (actually were they even around then, and when was then)? I'm intending to take my '94 mustang GT up there in a few weeks. Those Mchenry couplers you're talking about look like this one right?

I think I have some of them laying around that I probably won't ever use.

Rob, You're talking about the Athearn Genesis SD60I, right? Model railroader did a review on the SD60M not to long ago. Should be the same from a model standpoint.

Check here, there is one from the MR staff, a reader, and some on the older proto 2000 SD60s: http://mrr.trains.com/reviews-search.aspx?product=%7bE88D0088-3CB6-4D8B-81BA-75F39D040BB0%7d&scale=%7b182F69E6-E29B-4E09-BF9B-B0B9EFA81ED4%7d&type=&keywords=sd60m

Vincent

Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....

2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.

Jeff that’s some bad rain storm, I see the weather channel is calling for “flooding” rains for your area

Yep. Glad I'm on some seriously high ground. The danger though is that the only two roads out will be cut off.

Howdy ...

Well, since we decided on Mobile, AL, here's a welcome to AL. It's at the welcome center on I-65 at the TN border.

South of Birmingham is the Heart of Dixie Railroad Museum including this steam locomotive.

I will be traveling to Alabama in a few days to help my sister with our 91 year old Mom. She has been "friends" with a 90 year old widowed man which has been nice in some respects. (My Dad died 20 years ago.) Her friend is now gravely ill in ICU, and might not survive. If he does not survive, Mom will then have a transition. This may be a very difficult trip.

Has anyone heard from JimCG, lately?

Power went out here shortly after my morning post. The rain was coming in hard but it was difficult to tell sometimes exactly what direction it was going, as it actually appeared to be going back up at times. The drive into town was quite interesting partly due to the rain but mostly due to the wind. I came close to doing a few unintentional lane changes and twice I had to pull over and wait for the rain to let up a bit as the wipers were completely overwhelmed. Wiper speed on a lot of the old Dodges was slow at best and my van is no exception. I also had to keep a rag handy to periodically wipe the inside of the windshield. Due to a lack of defrosters the windshield would fog up from time to time. Some day I must install a heater core and a blower. Power came back on close to noon. Some areas are still without power at this time.

Gooooooooooooooooooooooooood Afternoon, the mother of all blizzards draws nearer and nearer...

ROBBY P: At the last CNW hiring session I attended (spring 1992), the "talk" consisted of the most grizzled railroader I'd ever seen doing his best to talk us OUT of hiring-on. He laid-out every negative thing about RR life: weather, life on-call 24/7/365 for a decade (extra board), death to any meaningful relationships, weather, risk to life and limb, etc., etc., etc. Along the way, he'd pause for a moment or so...at which point a number of guys would dash for the door. After his speech, maybe a dozen of us were left. As you said, we took a short break (just long enough for everybody to get a smoke in), then had two (I think) tests. Reading comprehension was one...and I believe the other was a "logic/reasoning" test. There "could" have been a basic mathematics test too...don't remember for sure. The interview was one of the most unpleasant of my life. The grizzled railroader didn't blink, didn't smile, didn't frown, didn't...seem to breathe. I'd hate to play poker against him, put it THAT way!  Good luck to you...

Oh, and THAT advice about being there at 8-sharp? Our session started at 8 am. The door to the room opened at 0759, and was closed at 0800, opening only to let people OUT.

CUDAKEN: A rough deal for sure. Maybe you oughta put a list up on HO YARDSALE. It's free, you can post the whole list in one shot...might get you some bucks.

Gotta go clear-out Rerun's trail...again... A good, SAFE afternoon to us all! Best wishes to all in need...

Chris

Italian Roast coffee in a  STORMY SOUTHERN  mug, please.

***Robby, sure hope that works out. You will be the second Diner patron to be hired by NS. And of course you are always welcome to visit us here on the ol' farm.

***Larry, will be interesting to see what you eventually end up with. Extra industries is always good.

****Johnboy, I have a bunch of those trees, too. Perhaps a dusting of muted colors will fix them. The basic structures are nice. They come in BRIGHT green.

***Ken, you have a nice train roster there, especially the steamers.Yes

Considering re-doing the hospital rock walls, as they look rather sloppy. Think I rushed them in an effort to speed up progress. Will let the wife decide, as it is her layout.

The wind is blowing with rain on the way. Off to hay the cows, then spend some time in the train room. It will be a good day for the latter.

Cheers! Cowboy Rob

Good Afternoon all, it is raining and cool here in the smoky mountains, perfect weather for old achy joints. Flo how about some of that 100 mile coffee, the stuff you can stand a spoon in, and an order of onion rings.

So Mobile Al. do you think we will be here for Marde gra. Been up in the studio moving the kilns and getting things ready for to finish building my modules. Looks like I can have a 12' x 8' foot print and have plenty of room to walk around the layout, and still use the studio, table saw and some of my bigger woodshop equipment will be harder to use when the layout is up. But that is why I am going with the modules, the plan is to build a storage rack that the modules will slide into when the Wife or I have bigger projects going on.

Well I had better get back to it, want to have this done today.

See you all later, and everyone stay safe out there in all that white and icy stuff.

Ron
