Long time since my last post in this thread, so here it goes. A couple of pics of my sectional layout in progress. After almost a year of construction, I was finally able to crank up the throttle and do my first test run!

And this is what my girlfriend is working on:

This is finished shot of the 'accessory' tanks from a Plastruct kit I showed ‘in the white’ last week. They are now painted white with a dusting I made with FQ Dust, Roof Brown, & Marine Brown, although the picture does not show it perfectly. The shot did overexpose the (red) rust dusting I put on the Industrial Gray, I put on the ladder & walkway. I have not added any powders at this point. I think this model makes a nice addition to the engine facility I have in mind (also unfinished). I got the idea of adding tanks from a former post, I thought it was cool, & had to be 'that monkey' & do that as well. I feel a couple large propane tanks coming on soon too. This was done as a quickie, & on the cheap, so to speak! I built the kit mostly as intended, but substituted the factory walkway for a D.A. mesh folded into a wide C channel & CA'd to the railings, then the ladder was added & the conflicting structure cut away. I added Archer porthole decals, & on the big manways, just added CA dots with a toothpic to represent bolts. The base was sprayed with Rust Oleum Texture 'Desert Bisque' paint. However, it severely warped the base & I expected that, as it has on prior projects, as it has a severe shrink rate. I 'mandled' it back into shape. The tanks were sprayed with Krylon flat white, & it had a cloggy nozzle, & I am surprized it looks as nice as it does, as it was spitt'n & spatter'n, & just not shooting at all, at times. The turn out was very lucky.

Say, UPTEEN; Thanks for last weeks comment! I got back late & did not thank you..

The other shot is the finished Wiking JD with a fork carrying a couple barrels, Oxy & Gas tanks, & a Jerry can. I wrapped it up with a thin slice of 3M masking tape & a scratch built cinch drive clamp. I used N & HO scale decals on the tanks & barrels. I also added a tall backer to the fork with the same D.A. mesh. I also replaced the font axle with a 0.046 brass rod & bent it to have the unit steered, it has Ackerman steering, meaning it's outside wheel is pitched more than the inside wheel, to allow optimum tracking, although you can't see it in the photo. If you want other pix, please ask, I like shooting pix, & would enjoy the interest.

Thanks, Enjoy!!

Very good work!  How did you make the 'buckle' on your masking tape belt?

Jarrel,

Well, I have an Evergreen Utili Sleeve, that is never empty, as in -everytime I remove a piece from it's 'mother' sleeve I use what I need & then add it into my 'Utili Sleve'.. The basics of what I did are this; I picked the smallest 'C' channel & the smallest rod (possibly a thick stretched sprue), I sanded an end of the 'C' channel down at an angle & glued on a snip of the rod. (the 'C' channel is not a triangle, it is abt. a 45 on one end & abt 80 on the other with a space, like a trapazoid shape).  I set it aside a bit, & when I returned I used a sharp razor to slice the 'built end' off, (capturing it of course, cuz it will launch offworld..) then I stuck it with the X-Acto & dabbed more cement on the new end, followed by another snip of rod. Then, for the flapper, I found an indexible flat that fit the channel & dunked it into the back of one of the rod joints. After another break, I toothpicked a dab of slow CA to the tape & used the tweezers to attach it, followed by some MM Brass paint & a black wash.

I really did doing a model 'within' a model'  probably from my 1/24 Porsche & Kenworth engine building days when I felt like a king,  ..well back then, anyway..

Lets see if the Nikon can get real naughty close here.... Hmmm...     Ah..   Yup, She talks...

I've been playing with an airbrush I recently purchased.  Here's a first attempt at weathering.  It's not much but it helped kill the glow in the dark plastic shine.

Here are first cars that I have finished in the New Year!

This is an IMRC 50' PS1 with Extended Coupler Pockets to replicate a NW Class B-16 car with an 8' Sliding Door and 7' Plug Door.  Finished with Herald King Decals.

This is an Athearn PS5344 50' Boxcar with Extended Coupler Pockets.  The Herald King decals are for the Mexican Built car so I re-arranged the decals to fit the PS car and added the PS Builders Plate and Cushion Service lettering from Herald King details set I had.

McKeen 40' PS1 lettered with Champ Decals in the as delivered paint scheme.

Thanks for looking!

Heavy Loads

I just finished weathering and adding loads to a couple of 81' depressed center flat cars. I used 40 LPI chain for the tie downs.

Great work, all.  Seeing it gets the "juices" flowing again.  I finally got around to painting my fleet of assorted road named and colored cabooses for the home road.  Looking kind of dirty but, they work around the coal tipples and behind trains of soft coal.

Beese!!!!!

Anyone worked on one of these??

Here is a 'Fantasy Scheme' caboose I'm working on. It is a Walthers Milwaukee Oil Burner Rib Sided Caboose Undecorated Kit  (Original shown in the first shot). Although I expected it to be like a typical BB kit, I was very surprised with the detail & complexity of this kit. Once seeing it I knew I could do almost anything with it, & ordered a few more for stock!!! Yess!!!! This is an initial picture of a simple mock-up, yes those that know me will know it will be a 'Fantasy IC&E' unit. I have begun detailing it in IC&E colors, & I must say the Canadian Stone Guards (plows) take it over the top! I added a set of lights, one will be a headlight & the other a red EOT (someday I will wire this & they will work, 4 now they will be MV lens') & ported the rear for a Class lantern, & the front has an eyehook ring for the reverse. I disassembled the interior to paint it in a two tone color, brown & sand. I added a little thin strip styrene for a door frame on the John & a divider for the cabinet next to the John. I also added a support leg to the outboard portion of the sink (as I have knocked them over like it was)... Then I added 3 crew members (Preiser), two watching the rails & one reading a book. The other doc's are just clips of colored paper I cut to size & doodled on with a fine pencil. I also added a faucet & two handles to the sink assembly before silver paint. I detailed the rest of the interior with just a bit of MM Brass over the cabinet pulls & on the added in John door knob. Although most of this will be hidden in the finished unit, it may show up when I eventually light it. However, I hope it shows what can be done with one of these kits, I like them! This one came with an extra frame & brake gear I can use for a future project, pretty cool.

One of the most difficult, & the dreaded 'not gonna do it now' things was the "Weeding" or “Pruning” of the railings. It looks almost impossible, & my favorite micro saw could not even get in there.. But using a sharp razor blade I was able to score & bend, score & bend, score & cut, until I had the runners all cut off cleanly. In the end it was not that bad. It went pretty quick & good actually. So don't let it hold you back, it was a bit of a hang-up for me & it should not have been. Just 'weed' or 'prune' those lilbastardz out, easy peazy..
I hope this helps to inspire & give you a few tips & ideas, hey it worked for me, why not give it a try???   It is a really nice model!

Wow, Thanks Chuck!!

Well, just imagine it with a yellow stripe & grabs & we are there.

I am going to silver out the window frames, (potential disaster), & then do a very mild weathering on it, as I would think it would be 'just' an excursion car, hence the rusty wheels & trucks..

These boosies let you do whatever you want! I got this one cuz I didn't think they had the in my hone town, but they did, so I had a surplus...    Yippeeee!

The next one will be a Wide/Extended Vision unit, someday!!

Thanks again, & keep them rolling!!!!

So that's what it's like inside a caboose! Love those heavy loads too, Motley.

Great work everyone.

Marvelous, Mike!   Sorry for the alliteration, but it fits!

Seneca Falls roundhouse had a needy visitor back in 1946, some 50 years or so before she was restored and placed in excursion service.  Here is the famous Santa Fe #3751 after some repairs to her running gear courtesy of a standing agreement between the Santa Fe and the Sentinel Coal Rwy's trainmaster.  She is being backed out of the stall and will be run out onto the main and on to her home station.

Well, after making large steps forward on my layout and not showing anything, I finally got a overall shot of the layout and a video of the first test train this evening. All trackwork is done, except staging, and it will be a while before I will be able to purchase more track and roadbed.

Took a few shots last night.

Glad I found WPF- I enjoy looking at everyone's work here. In particular I always like the shots of layouts in progress to see how folks are putting things together and regret that I never took those shots on mine.

I fimished another building yesterday. The Shamrock Hotel started as a kitbash from 3 Life Like Belvedere Downtown Hotel kits for the layout I was building 2 layouts ago. I did not finish it before a move, and a smaller layout with no room for the building. It stayed in storage until I started developing Sheepscott on my current layout. The building has an interior, lighting (to be hooked up), and a Miller Engineering animated sign on the roof. I finished the other building, Luxenberg Jewelers, a couple of months ago. I still need to complete the street and other details in the scene.

In Southern California we can work outside in the winter... ;)  I'm back to working on the signals.  I found this in someone's garden where it sat for the last 15 years, restored it, and now on display in my backyard.  A ton o' work, but worth every drop of blood.  Video link below.
