How would you feel about a Weekly Video Fun thread? The initiation, procedure, and participation would be much like WPF, except it could last from Friday early to the following Thursday late, at which the mods will lock it.
I see that they have become popular in WPF, so common in the past few weeks that I think we should seriously consider having them in their own special weekly thread. WPF can remain for stills, and for those who enjoy video a bit more or as much................
In the spirit of the idea, I'll post a link to my latest: Speakers on and volume set for "steam!"

Maybe, but I would just as well let people keep posting their video in WPF, at least until the volume of videos consistently warrant a separate thread each week. I don't think we're there yet. BTW, nice video of your layout Crandell.

A little off topic but relative, can anyone recommend a good freeware or cheap video editing software program? I had MS movie maker on the old computer but the new one doesn't have it and I can't seem to DL to from MS anymore.

Blue, your Y 6b is smoking it decoder! Never mind, you have the Paragon II version.
Crandell, is that a BLI Class J? Mine did not sound that good so I sold it.
Not a bad idea, but I all so wonder how many videos we would get.

Ken, yes it is BLI, but the "Stealth" version introduced in early 2006 with no decoder....straight DC. I had a Tsunami "heavy" put in it. I agree, it sounds good. I haven't had much success getting rid of the rod clank when it is running. There's a CV for that, but I didn't notice any change when I programmed it with different values.
True, it may be that initially the volume of submissions might be much lower than what we currently see in the way of stills in WPF, but ya gotta start somewhere. We have two already, and I am sure there will be a couple more. There's a video contest on another forum, and there is usually lots of cross-transfer in membership...so I'm hopeful.
I appreciate all the feedback. BTW, I have nothing invested in this...it's not personal, so if the consensus is to not do this, we won't do it.
Just whipped this up yesterday...

I don't have my layout setup currently so I am unable to contribute either photos or videos in WPF but I do make a point of checking out everyone's contributions every week and enjoy seeing what others are up to. If you want my vote, I say go ahead and give it a try. You'll never know how successful it might be if you don't try. Its not like it costs anything to implement. If it doesn't pan out we can just discontinue having a seperate thread and go back to combined stills and videos in WPF.
If Wilbur and Orville didn't give it a try, they'd of never got off the ground!!!

WVF? I say
By the way, can a video be rotated? (Sorry about the neck pain.)

Crandell, you have my vote to give it a try, esp. since I received a new video camera for Christmas.

You guys have my vote for a WVF too, though as of right now, there's a glitch between Win7-64 and my graphics card, so I can't watch or upload to the internet easily...

Sure. Now that a lot more people are doing video, might be a good idea to split the topics.

Sure what's it gonna hurt. It may take off. Like someone said, it won't cost any extra. If it sits low and stagnant, then the people just won't start a new one. I personally don't care as I have not felt like I have anything to post picture wise yet, and it may be years before I even get a video camera. Let alone film my layout that may or may not be....filmable even by then. So, have at it. What'll it hurt?

I enjoyed that clever editing of the sound, Jim, and you have a nice video, despite the camera. I thought it performed quite well, though.
Why are there all these draconian rules about WPF, and the proposed WVF? "It will open at such-and-such a time." "It will close and be locked at such-and-such a time." I guess the threads will be locked if you violate any of these apparently arbitrary rules.
Why not just let these run their course like any other threads?

Naw, I don't think anybody is going to lock anything. The idea is to start with a fresh thread every week, otherwise it goes on forever, makes it tough to see what is new.
Crandell, here is my answer to your original question-
Run it for a few weeks and see if it holds water {er, uh...trains}.
I personally don't want to wacth to many videos as I get bored with them fast especially if they are long vids of the same train going round and round {though I love to watch my trains go round and round for hours}. I tend to skip them int he WPF, and only look at the pics.
But there may be a market for it, One never knows when one posts a thread how it will be recieved until posted.
Good luck in your new adventure!

After long and careful thought, they have convinced me. I have come to the conclusion that they are right. The aliens did it.
I like the idea although I would keep WPF as Weekend Photo Fun for the days it already has Fri. - Mon. and the have WVF as Weekly Video Fun and set it up for Mon. - Thurs. In addition I would not restrict videos from being posted on the WPF.
I like seeing videos, but some of them are just too long. I also enjoy hearing some of the sound equipped locos. The only problem I have with some of them is the rather random blowing of the horns.

Mark, the idea is to start with a fresh batch every week, just as we do with the photos. And I agree that short videos are going to hold my interest better than ones running for two or more minutes. If a photo can tell a story, I would think a 30 second video should be able to do it just as well, even better.
That's just my opinion, and I feel strongly that people should post whatever length of videos they want to. Let each of us decide how long we will watch any of them.
Nothing cast in concrete....we're still trying it on for size.
Steamage, I enjoyed your video very much! Short and sweet, well lit, taken with a good camera. In focus. Just like a good photo, except it has sounds and movement. I love it!
