switcher for modern era CSX layout
Posted by soller on Friday, October 29, 2010 2:40 AM

Hello everyone! .

I want to buy a new model for my Csx layout.  Actually I'm designing a freight yard, so my choice is a switcher. Can you give me some advice about available models?

there are many good switchers. You havent specified the era, or scale.

For one, a gp15, gp30, or gp38 or gp40 could be very good starts. Also, you have the MP15, sw1500, and the new Genset. Atlas produces all of these except for the sw1500. I believe athearn does that. Im an N scaler, but I have collected HO engines for years. Hopefully some of this info helps and assuming since majority of the members here are HO scalers, they can help you out more. Im sure we have a few csx modelers on the site too and infact I believe hamiltonblue is one. Wish you the best of luck!

Any yard switcher or loco frequently used as one could work. But if you want to know what CSX uses now for yardswitching, you can be prototypical if you want.

Well I have some bookmarks on CSX loco equipment you can peruse through to see what you find that CSX uses now:

Some have photos to go withthe loco listing.

Hope this helps

Just my thoughts, ideas, opinions and experiences. Others may vary.

 HO and N Scale.

After long and careful thought, they have convinced me. I have come to the conclusion that they are right. The aliens did it.

If you are looking for end-cab switchers...

Athearn RTR SW1500, Athearn Genesis MP15AC, Atlas MP15DC, or possibly the Atlas TM Genset.  You could also look at the Genesis or P1K GP15.

Otherwise, don't overlook aging SD40-2s and derated SD50s.

soller,

I have a Broadway Limited switcher, CSX, it's an SW series, it has sound, and what I really like is that it is geared really low. Because it's the only "Yard switcher" I own , I do not know if the "low gearing" is in all yard switchers. Other choices are GP-38, 39's (with sound, Atlas Gold) and such. I see mostly GP38's and an occasional MP-15  working the yard near my home. Unless your modeling a specific era, area ect....I think you'll find any engine with CSX markings will fit your needs. You'll just have to decide if you want the "switcher" type(SW series, MP-15 ect..) , or a GP38 series. The GP38 type can do double duty, yard and mainline. It's a relatively short 4 wheel truck based engine. On my layout I use both the SW, and GP38's, depends what's easiest to get to at the moment. The Broadway Limted SW is cool with the sounds, because it's geared really low, it doesn't move very fast, even at full throttle, and the sound matches very well.

Good luck in your choice!

I have one of the new Atlas trainman Gensets in CSX, as most of my modeling is CSX, and I love it and it has really changed how MRR, I have gone from railfaning to making yard switches and local deliveries.

Since you are talking about a freight yard, running smoothness at slow speeds will be very important.

CSX is a large carrier and there will be variations in switcher types.  However, one of the most commonly found units in yard and local switching assignments are earlier road unit diesels such as the GP-38-2.

The Lifelike P2000  GP-38-2 is a superb runner, has excellent detail, and can be picked up inexpensively.  The Atlas units also run well.  For photos of some CSX units on a modern era layout feel free to drop by my website at:

The new Genset is a great model. I have got some of them and love them!

However, they are loooong. A Genset is about 8,5" long and they run frequently as a couple (17"!). A SW1500 is about 6" long, a GP38 about 8".

Have an eye on your curve radius and the lead track length

The Athhearn SW 1500's are a little noisy even with decoders added.  The Atlas MP 15's run smooth at slow speeds and are quiet

Here's some fairly recent shots from the Nashville CSX yard. They seem to use about anything for switching and humping, but there were a lot of MP-15's in the Bright Future scheme.

I am also a yard kinda guy. I made it the main focal point on my layout and I use GP38's, SD40's, and SW1500's. But the future of yard work is probably going to be the new Gensets. I have not purchased the Atlas Genset yet but they look sweet and thats next on my list.

Well, I've also a Bachman GP30 and a Bachman GP35 but they aren't CSX railroad. Is there any shell in CSX paint scheme for the GP30 or the GP35?

I use a few.

Atlas Genset:

Atlas MP15DC:

Atlas GP40. These can also fit right in on the Main and are actually smaller than the Genset:
