Mornin' everyone!  How's it goin', eh?

Zoe I'll have one of those breakfast bagelly thingies with Canadian bacon and lots of dark roast coffee in a R&GV RR Mug.  I'll go sit in the front booth and watch the Moose feeding outside.

Slept in late this morning, and still could use a couple more hours of sleep.  Have a lot of "odds and ends" to get caught up on today before I head down to the layout.

Galaxy, isn't it amazing how such a little thing as a mouse can smell THAT bad......!!!  The museum I mention often here is the Rochester & Genesee Valley RR Museum located in Rush, NY South of Rochester.  We partner with the New York Museum of Transportation and have a 2 mile long track connecting the two museums.  We operate every Sunday from 11AM to 4:30 (5PM) and have extended hours on special days.  Most Sundays we operate track cars on the R&GV RR end.  You get on a Trolley at the NYMT and then board the track car at "Midway".  When we run the Diesel Trains, you get on board one of our antique cabooses for the ride from Midway to the R&GV RR Museum.  Our next big event is "Diesel Days" on Saturday and Sunday, August 21st. and 22nd.  Much more information can be found here: http://rgvrrm.org/  Take a look and click on Visit or Learn More  for direct info on how to visit the museums.  If you folks decide to come up for a visit, let me know.  (Might be able to get you a cab ride......)

Barry, glad to hear Audrey is recovering from the accident...  Accident?  THAT should be classified as assault with a deadly weapon!  Hope your lawyer takes the perp to the cleaners!  People talking and texting, reading email, etc, etc, etc, while driving really bug me!  Driving while under the influence here in NYS is now a felony if you have a person under the age of 16 in the car.  It should be the same for driving and using a cell phone.  OTOH, Ulrich, I probably will be getting a cell phone (Possible one of the $10 a month ones from AARP) for just the safety issue you mentioned.

It is currently 20° in Moosonee, Ont. with a high of 22° later this afternoon along with the showers.  Low tonight will be around 13°.  Tomorrow is going to be hot even way up here with the mercury topping 28°.  Chris, don't put the air conditioner away just yet!

Later!

Question: Anyone know which would work better to prevent mold, a wood sealer (like used on decks) or paint (like Kilz)? Under the enclosed porch it is smelling musty and I want to prevent mold from getting started.

Cowboy Rob

Rob, I use Kilz for exterior surfaces exposed to the elements. But you might want to prep the surface, and also first to see if there is any underlying reason the mustiness. Standing water, or splash back from the ground or deck?

I just read on the MRH site about the fact that MR discontinued the online index, what a shame that it is gone now.  It was such a useful resource for finding past articles and what issue they were in. I did see that Joe Fugate is looking for someone to take on the project if MR is willing to give out the original source code and that the NMRA has already agreed to help with the project of cataloging all MR magazines for indexing purposes.

We adopted three kittens this weekend, they are all girls and are named Ryanna, Bella, and Delilah. Yeah!!

Question Question: I am looking to add some "people" to the layout and in particular I want some railroad workers, farm workers, and laborers doing various jobs, painters, construction, etc... I guess it does not really matter what they are "doing", my real question is: What brand has good quality, painted figures / people? What brand do you like?

How about some Shrimp, Sausage, and Grits for lunch today? Dinner

Thoughts and prayers to all in need! Angel

Sir Madog

Sawyer - if I remember correctly, you will start your Sophomore year ( or is it already your Junior year?) at Aiken High this fall. That leaves you with a mere three years to go until graduation. Just a thought - instead of planning a layout on a hollow core door, how about something modular, for you to be able to take along as you move forward on the path of formal education?

That's what I was thinking when I thought about it last night. I could go back to my old 6x6 plans and update them. The main thing about the Hollow Core door is it's $25 for the table top. but I think I'll see what I can do with a modular 3x6 or 6x6

Coffee in a SUNNY SOUTHERN mug, please.

***Jeffrey, thanks! I will look into that on the next H-Depot run. BTW, very nice pic there. More excellent lighting.

***Galaxy, good luck finding the little carcass.

Last night, just as a heavy rain storm hit our valley, a neighbor over the hill started a full size fireworks display. Lasted about 10 minutes. That was interesting.

Been thinking of using a Kato double track set (V11) for the vulcano portion of my future (N) layout. Could be used for sight seeing runs. I have passenger trains in SP Daylight (GS-4 Kato set), and two vintage trains in UP and SF. Would be nice to work them into the layout. Would still have a separate track well below the tourist lines, for the mining operation.

Cheers! Cowboy Rob

Good morning. It's 78 and sunny. The high today will be 103 in the shade, it will be partly cloudy and the word for today is HOT. I'll be in areas cooled by AC as much as possible.

I'll be in Alexandria most of the day today. I have to take my mother there for a doctors appointment this morning and we likely won't be back until after 5 pm. The LHS is closed today so I think I'll go by Hobby Lobby and see if they have any train stuff left. Thankfully the AC in my mother's car works so that won't be a problem. On a day like today driving mine would be like driving a sauna. The AC hasn't worked in 8 years and with a busted metal pipe in the high pressure line it's not likely that it ever will again.

Morning all

Off to the dermatologist today to determine anymore skin cancers.

Then I have to find a dead mouse I think has invaded the computer room. The cat had one she was chasing down the other night and probably injured it severely. anyway there is a strange and almost sickening smell of saurkraut {Sp?} like smell in the room only worse. SO I am assuming she injured the mouse and it found a corner to hide in and die....now to find the room as it is about as packed as the train room is to find the derned thing.....

No other plans today. YET.

WIll be warming up here this week and humididity going up...enjoy Ray!

BTW RAY, where is this museum you keep talking aobut maybe we take a trip up there?

WEll all for now

talk at you'all later

 Good Afternoon,

well, it is past lunchtime, so it´ll be just coffee for me, please, and some buttered toast with lemon curd.

Petra has just received her invitation to the Gulag - the same SoapBox thing I had to go through end of last year. A waste of time and money! I won´t comment on it further, but it gets time for us to move out of this country.

Barry - yes, emergencies! I tend to forget, that I "owe" my life to the car phone I had put into my car, many years ago. I was somehow able to call 110 (our 911), when I was struck by my first heart attack while on my way home.  My Angel for Audrey´s recovery!

Good morning.   Just like everybody else..........Its going to be a hot week!!

On my way to work and thought I would stop by.   All of my cars are selling, but I have no boxes to ship them with Dunce.  Boy wasn't that a smart move.

Barry...I'm glad Audrey is doing better.   That's what screwed us with my wifes car wreck (as far as money wise)......We had the wrong insurance, so we couldn't get any pain and suffering.  Sometimes its more about the person getting better but then you want the other person to PAY!!!

I will pop back in later this afternoon.

Sir Madog
Cell phones - a never ending story. Why do people think it to be necessary to be available at all times? Most conversations are simply use- and senseless. I find it a nuisance, sitting in a posh restaurant and listening to someone talking into his cell phone. Nothing in life is so important that it could not wait for some moments - other than calling 911. I should better stop here, it could turn into an endless rant!

The only reason I use a cellphone is for w**k and emergencies. Most of my clients are out in the country north of me so when something occurs it helps to have contact....but....any other thing that comes along can stuff it--------

Good Morning---supposed to be a hot week again around here again. I sure hope not as hot as is claimed--it is getting a bit tiring around hereSigh

Audrey is doing better --at least this morning--our lawyer is looking at a healthy sum for this one----hopefully enough to make his insurance way higher ---- we're going to see about this, that is for dang sure---Whistling

As it is her broken wrist was on her cane arm--she is having quite the time using her non cane side---

I'm off until Wednesday so I'ma gonna make the best of it by doing my MRR stuff----

Zoe, I'll have a coffee and a breakfast bagel please----in a mug--no IV this morning-Smile,Wink, & Grin

 Good Morning Folks!

 Coffee only this morning please

Looking like it's going to be a HOT week here.

Went to the hobby store yesterday, and picked up some rock molds and hydrocal. Did not get a chance to do anymore work on the diorama, I hope to add the rocks this week.

The train came by and I got on, that’s when it all began

Any good paint that contains a moldecide will work.

 Good Night, Keith!

Good Morning Everyone Else!

Zoe, a bucket of coffee, please. I overslept! Well, not really, but I woke up later than usual. Summer seems to be over now, I can smell a scent of autumn in the air.  This morning, we could see some deer peacefully grazing. During the hot days they hid away in the adjacent forest. I´d like to watch them - a much prettier sight than the neighbors around us, who are just a bunch of ill-educated and ill-behaved no-goods.

No plans to day, other than the usual Monday morning run to stock up our supplies of food.

Keith - laying cork roadbed ain´t an easy task. Cork does not like bending and tends to "swim" on the layer of glue. I always used a fairly quick setting adhesive for that reason, a stuff called "Pattex", which cures in 10 minutes and stays  elastic, unlike white glue, which gets rock hard.

You all have a good day!

Slice of cantaloupe, please.

***Vincent, I never thought of cannibalizing a VCR for train parts. Great idea!

***Todd, my wife did the same thing to me, gave me a cell phone. I think only 2 (maybe 3, I forget) people have the number. That shows how often I use it. I wish my wife would not use hers while driving, but she does.Dunce

***Barry, how is Audrey doing? Sending healing thoughts her way. She really should get some decent train funds (or whatever she prefers) out of that incident.

Question: Anyone know which would work better to prevent mold, a wood sealer (like used on decks) or paint (like Kilz)? Under the enclosed porch it is smelling musty and I want to prevent mold from getting started.

Internet service is at dial-up speed here right now, for whatever reason. Gurrrr!

Good Night!

  "Good Morning to you Ulrich"

"Juice please,  I'll be going to be soon."

Just wanted to be the first to wish you good morning Ulrich.

"Keith - that is an awesome "pin parade" you have done there! My colors also! I like blue and yellow, that´s why I like the old ARR paint scheme Big Smile "

Why thank you, you would be surprised to see how much this cork wanted to get away from me.  You DO see all the glue marks.  Its been hectic to say the least.. lol.  Plus trying to find time to take photos of all this.  But you would be surprised how nicely the color push pins are for me... also great for explaning stuff,  I can identify certain sections of the cork/track in the photos.. by color of the pins.

100_1612.jpg picture by Blazzin55

  Whata mess eh?

Garry, if you happen to place your eyes upon this.. lol... well I 'get it' now as far as what a transition is.  I had to lay down some track to see.. but yeah.. we got that~!  I also wanted to see if my elevated outside rails.. well any elevation as well.  So .. everyone.. my first attempts.. well I'm happy.  Take a look.

100_1621.jpg picture by Blazzin55

BTW, You see that crazy blind cat of mine in the background.  In a pile of cork.  I hated to move her.

100_1625.jpg

Well I doubt if you can see any elevation of any kind.. but its there.  I can also add more of a transition to this without making any major errors... lol.   Well thats it.. I'm having fun now.  I can start to see light at the end of the tunnel... lol.  I guess its a question of which is going to give up first,  my pocketbook or my back.

How's it goin eh? What's up? Oh we are! HA! Get it? We're in CanadaLaugh. NorthBig Smile. UpBlack Eye......Sigh Never mind.

Well I got the "Powder room" floor grouted. I shall not use a soft sponge a gain. Couldn't find my hard one so I figured this would work if I was careful. Well it did, but made it take sooo long.

Cell phones. Hate ‘em. I have one because the wife made me strap one on. Ulrich is right. Aaaaaack!

Garry- You're lucky Jeff has a keen sense of humor. I guess you forgot he's kin to Vinnie. I'll bet they had some wild reunions when they were youngerWhistling.

Time to renew MR mag. I'll wait again until they get nervous and offer me half price rates. They forgot too last time and I had to renew at full price.

Tomorrow is a full day with a couple of free hours thrown in. I think since the grout needs about 48 hours to cure before I set the terlit and the sink, I will do some drywall work, OR if I was smart I'd mow my yard. I'd best sleep on it. Now That's a the best idea I've had in a while.

Teen Steam Fan, Nice avatar, lol. I love that one. I hear you on cell phones when driving. I don't ever do it. Yesterday I passed my some lady doing that in a Maserati Grand Turismo (can you say pricy, $118K+ Shock; and she had bags full of designer clothing). Almost sideswiped me because she was veering towards my lane and only had a few inches to spare before veering back.

That hasn't happen to me yet, but if it does, I'm emailing Top Gear to find out how much an insurance policy costs on one of those. Maybe even turn it into my insurance. (Yeah, like I'll ever get anything out of it.) My defense is a torquey 4.0 straight 6 Jeep engine and a 2 inch receiver. I don't even like using my cell phone period. The only reason I have it is so my family or friends can get a hold of me. I'd personally be happy with a CB radio.

Nah......  All you guys need is a Leslie S-3L on the car.  On good tap on it, and you'll be able to watch them drive right off into the ditch...... And you'll be able to smell them a mile away.........

 Evenin' How ya doin, eh?

Flo I'll have a cup of decaf just to rest my bones for a while....

Man it's cold in here, who turned on the air conditioner, eh? Chris is hot, eh....  For crying out loud it's 18° outside and he's got the air conditioner on.  Don't he know why we moved to Canada, eh?

Good thing they at least have hot coffee up here....

Mowed a bit more lawn this evening after giving one of the neighbors some green peppers and a head of Broccoli.  Yep the broccoli is in season.  Big heads too.  I leave them after the first harvest, they will continue to produce side shoots with smaller heads for several months.  One year I cut fresh broccoli out the garden and served it to guests on Thanksgiving...  Pretty cool, eh?  Been a great growing season so far!  Oh didn't manage to get the lawn finished.  The part I didn't get done yesterday is now over 6" tall and thick.  Ran out of battery with about half what is left still to do.  I'll get her done tomorrow (It was getting too dark to mow anyway.)

No progres on the HO stuff today, but sure had fun with the 1/1 scale trains!Big Smile

Hey folks, finally got a snapshot of the scenery work, although it looks crappy cause of the cell phone's lack of adjustable features. works fine in sunlight, but I needed the flash, but it completely screwed the lighting up. Hills are painted, and I worked on the poly fiber as much as I could, but I need to go get some more dollar hairspray.

Chris, He would have been in Fairchild Wisconsin. The ROW is still there but is now a ATV trail (grandparents live on it).

You're not imagining things about the boxcar question. Shortly after I typed the post and editing the Kato motor rantl I remembered rrpicturesarchives had a frieght car section. Sure enough I found 3 pictures of such cars in the late 70s (all on the BN no less). IMO, ideal strating points for weathing (I've never weathered from a protoype pic before Whistling) I edited that part out when I was messing with the Kato rant. Sorry 'bout that one. Here's the results of my search though:

http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=1780144
http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=716774

Vincent

Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....

2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.

Good Evening, bucket of lemonade please....and thank-you.

VINCENT: Yeah...I'm pretty sure THAT would be the "as-delivered" paint job for THAT boxcar. Soooooooooo yer probably looking at a 1960s paint scheme. Grunge it up good, slap "lube plates" and maybe a 1970s ACI label on there...and I think it'd be fine for 1980s/early 1990s. It would just look like one THAT never made it to the Clinton (or Cudahy, Wisconsin) car shop for a new paint job. THAT's just my half-a-cent worth of opinionated opinion. Your results may vary greatly!!Mischief No, I don't think you ever mentioned the CNW track layer. Any idea where he would've been? Realizing of course THAT at one time, the mighty Ball and Bar could be seen in Illinois, Iowa, Wisconsin, Michigan, Minnesota, S. Dakota, Missouri, Kansas, and Nebraska...

Head hurts from mowing today...gonna just sit over by the air conditioner...

***EDIT**** jeepers creepers....looks like I got TOP, so order up boys! Chef Also, I think I'm either crazy from the heat...or seeing figments of my imaginary imagination. I coulda SWORN VINCENT was showing an Accurail CNW boxcar and asking my not-so-expert opininated opinion... Now, I don't see it!?!?!?!?!?!

Hey guys

Been working on a circuit for my test track (10' long 1x6 with that is double tracked with a crossover at each end). I got it to where I can cycle from using my Zepher's programming and main leads to using a DC throttle (testing engines that don't have decoders yet). took a while but I got it done. it looks like crap but it works well. I tried monkeying with my working C425's motor to try to get it to quiet up. Well I cleaned it all out and when I went to re-assemble it one of the magnets broke. So I take the brushes and springs out and try the other case. some of it's tabs (holds the housing with the brushes in place) broke. Take the good magnets, but them in the good case, and then re-assemble it. Well it didn't work because one of the wires to the commutator busted. Grab the other one's guts (center part with the shaft) and re-assemble it. It's defienately a bit quieter now, but some of my other locos are quieter. Gears are fine when I tested them with another motor (single-shaft I plucked out of a VCR for this purpose). maybe the motor need replacement.

Didn't bother to go outside and work on the car becaus.e the heat index was 120. Top it off my car doesn't have AC either...

Anyone ever dealt with HogTrainz before? I noticed they had some stuff I needed (Kato HM5s) that I couldn't find elsewhere. Would like to know if there one of those "bad" shops before I go and buy from them

Chris, liking the CNW pictures. DId I tell you I had an uncle who was a tracklayer for the CNW around the turn of the last century?

Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....

2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.

Evenin" to you all!  how's it goin, eh?

Did a 7 hour stint out at the museum today.  We had a good crowd all day long.  Several people who hadn't been there before, and a bunch with all kinds of questions for me.  No rain, and high in the high 70's so it was quite comfortable as long as you stayed out of the sun.  Even so, I am beat....

Flo, I'll have the fish fry, Atlantic Haddock, eh?  Also will need a Dr. pepper to go along with it.

I'll be back later....

Coffee refill, please.

****Garry, neat scene there!

Finished mudding the 6 window sills. Need to let it dry before applying the second coat. Once that is done (tomorrow), then the rest of that 60+lbs bucket of joint compound (which will be most of itPirate) will be on it's way to the train room. (evil laugh)

Not sure I'm up to working on the future pasture this evening. With temps in the higher 90's today, it took a lot out of me. Well, off to do a quick barn check & feed run, then going to relax.

Cheers! Cowboy Rob

I was razzing Jeff about his GP30, and I'm gald he takes jokes so well ... uh ... I thought he did...hmmm. ..Jeff, what did you say to Vinnie? ....... Yikes.! ...

Oh never mind. Jeff the engine has "plausible realism"... It's fun to scuzzie some engines.

Thanks for the plausible. You gotta be careful what you say to me around cousin Vinnie. If I start getting irritated he gets upsetDead. Know what I mean?Big Smile

Garry,  I thank you for your comment.  Transition curve?  LOL  .. "Ah yeah~  I guesssss...?

Oh sure yeah.. I got that.  That area in question, well is where I am tying in the long Yard Lead, and I figured those two had to be level in many both ways.  But coming out of that turn the rail is 'uplifted' ever so slightly.

But the actual two mains are different elevations and the newest main has a 'transition' curve?  Well its elvated by tape and layered.

Ok.. here's a pic.. lets see if I can explain what I've been up to.

100_1615.jpg picture by Blazzin55

What you see here.. lol,  is 1 and 1/2 mains.  The newest 'Main number 1' (yellow push pins)  has the outside rail elevated by means of layering tape down in a graduated fashion.  Yeah yeah I know the wrinkles in the tape.  But with this method only a small portion of the cork is not glued down .. so to speak,  and so the wrinkled tape was only on the part I didn't need.  Looks good so far, although the pic really dosen't show how elevated the outside rail is.  I imagine when I lay track down it will show up differently.

Now on 'Main number 2',  It was laid down with an extra layer of 1/8th inch cork to give a different height, and to take away the flatness.  But getting back to main number 2, I laid down the cork and used the 'blue' push pins only on one side of the cork,  so as to 'Furrow' (?) the outside edge.  Well I'm happy with it.. and it sure is a fast approach.  Then again I have read somewhere in here.. where someone has just sanded down the 'inside' edge of the cork.  I'm having fun.  Oops.. gotta go. bye.. sorry for the mis-spelling. Gotta go.

In this photo, you can see an ex GN Baldwin switcher working with an ex SP Baldwin switcher at the coke ovens. The ore cars on teh upper level track and the coal and coke hoppers are also scuzzied up.

However, my other GN locos are unweathered.

Sir Madog

Sawyer - I somehow can understand, that your current layout is starting to "bore" you, especially, when you encounter problems running a train. But that new layout you have in mind is not so much different from what you are doing now, so I wonder what you gain by taking your current layout down and building the new one. Would it not be better to try to "beef up" the track and get it running smoothly? I am not against that plan, but I´d just like to invite you to give that some more thought. Actually, I am quite fond of your current layout.

Ulrich, there are three key things about my new plan vs. my current one. The first is the staging provisions. I have an oval on the layout, but two stubs that can let me stage (with the help of some sector plates) mainline trains and run them. The second is I now have a scene in there I REALLY want to model (well two really): a mainline by a two lane highway and a wood chip loader. The last is expandability. With this hollow core door layout I could make it a peninsula of a larger layout, or build another hollow core door to attach on.

Another advantage of my new plan is the size; since it's smaller (although still an island [:/]) it won't take up as much of my bedroom as the 4x8 does. I also like how the town is positioned in my new one relative to the industries; while one industry is on the outskirts a bit, the other is RIGHT across from the main street shops.

I've learned enough from my current layout's set up; how it's planned, how I operate it, etc etc. While it won't be killed right away (in fact, it may last another year), I want to look ahead to the future and start planning/prepping for that next major layout project.

Jeff - Zorin Industries? Wasn´t that one of the bad guys in an old James Bond movie with Sean Connery?

Yep! Max Zorin. A view to a kill, 1985.
