Janie, I need a hot fudge sundae and a mug of decaf to help me relax....
Left the house at 8AM this morning and arrived home about 6:30PM. Long day, but a good an a fun day out at the Medina RR Museum. I think we ended up with 20 people attending, and I was told by several we should "Do it again" soon. By next year they hope to have their 2 E units (1/1 scale) up and running with the passenger cars they have been restoring. Would be nice to do something with a train excursion included....... The museum itself is more than a football field long (It's an old NYC Freight Station) and houses both the huge HO layout, but all kinds of RR equipment, firefighting equipment, and various models as well. I think the curator said they had 38,000 visitors last year, and should match it this year if all goes well.
I no sooner arrived and started to set up, when a man and his young son came over and asked if this was where the NMRA was going to meet. He is a member of the NFR, NMRA in Ontario, Canada. He just happened to have taken his wife to some doings in Buffalo, NY and he and his son decided to visit the Medina Museum not knowing we were going to be there. They stayed for our meeting and lunch as our guests. See Barry! You could have come down to the lower 48 to visit us........ Not THAT far.
Anyway I'll have a few photos of the Museum Layout I took this afternoon as soon as I unbury the camera.
Thank you all for your thoughts and prayers for my BIL, Bernie. I came home to an email form my SIL. The news is..... Bernie was counciled by one of the Docs at the hospital. They have not been able to get him hydrated and get his kidneys working again without any success. He agreed to signing a DNR order and they will place him in a local hospice center ASAP. He may have 3 to 4 weeks left, but most likely less........... I hope and pray for a comfortable and peaceful end of this life for him. He loved trains and machines, and we had a lot of good times together! He was the one who lent me his Jeep that had been major street machine with a Chevy 283 V8 in it when my old VW (36HP) got in an accident and was out of commission for a month...... That did 0 - 60 in the time it took to let the clutch out blowing blue smoke off all 4 tires. Was a lot of fun until I had to fill it up the first time after driving it for 2 days...... He has a track car at his house along with tons of interesting stuff........ I will miss him!

Jeff, I too will be sorry to see the old layout go~ Then again, I would imagine you could come up with something very nice. I always enjoyed that certain angle of the camera concerning your morning pics.
Now Jeff, getting back to those old Dremel's .. you made me think. Gheez.. my old dremel is at about 15 years old also. Its the old plug in type, I've used it many years and even ahve cut Mexican tile. It has taken a beating.. and keeps going. My hand held, its ok.. but nothing to get excited about, I use it for portable work where a cord might get in the way.
Jeff, maybe I missed it.. but I've been sort of following this.. Now did you or your cousin go back and get the rest of the steering colomn? The whole story kind of brought back some memories when I got lost in a big yard looking for VW parts, of course it was a hot day, and I had brought with me a big tall can of KB Lager beer. It was a hot day, and I got lost..lol.

JIM: What THAT thing atop the CC geep is, is an air filter. I think it's called a Horst, might be the company THAT makes it, or the IC/ICG guy's name who designed it. The Paducah shops put 'em on lots of their famous rebuilt geeps. Here's a couple better shots of what they look like:

Ken, Whew.. spent the better part of the morning looking a Barracuda's. I don't know why, I just got lost.
The only Cuda I have, I believe its a 1970, the last year of the muscle cars.
This guy makes them on ebay, and sells them for a pretty fair price. $2 bucks to ship.. $6 bucks for the car. Fair enough. ONly N scale.. so any imperfections you see, well the photo is bigger than the car.
Now for anyone wondering just what the heck am I up to now?~ Diorama time again.
Well the wife and I sat down and talked about it.. re-did it over and over.. but here's what I've got.
Yeah, yeah.. lol.. whata mess. Well to go over things with the wife on a diorama, it means lots of talking and drawing.
I look to her for the initial creative aspects. I tell her what I want, and maybe how to acheive it, and she goes from there. But from that point, 'Whoa, look out.. I'm going full steam. The finished morning idea.

Now you might wonder why all the lines.. forget it, thats at least #3 drawing and cutting of paper.
I just want to share one or two of the idea's.
1. The back row of houses will be on a graduated hill to off set the flatness.
2. The center homes.. upfront will be on a slight hill. Lol.. now as I write this, I must admit, I dont' know if it can be done, but if anyone knows me.. "Well I just gotta see it for myself" Even if I waste the material to see it. Anyone care to follow how to make I will attack this project, well follow it in my own thread. I make pics as I go, even if its down the wrong set of tracks.
I think it was Der John who asked me one time... "Where did all the houses come from?" Short story... last week I went through my old mail to write Ulrich, in which I did. I found a letter I wrote to my sister telling her.. so far I had spent 6 weeks in bed. I, like Ulrich was suffering from low back pain, Sciatica problems and pain of the worst kind. Well Der John, a minimum of 6 weeks bed-ridden, with History Channel and a few others.. and EBAY. I had enough strength to gather my efforts and bring the keyboard to me. I bought houses.. tons of them... lol. What else was I going to do? Sensory deprivation~ I found myself crying watching a movie.. lol.
Todd my friend, I laughed at the small quote at the bottom of your signage.. about being the Ultimate ruler of the house.. Jeanne and I got a good laugh.

But our local university wants about ALL of its full-time instructors to have or be getting Doctorate degrees. Kinda overkill to teach freshman English (er, sorry, I mean 'Critical Thinking and Rhetoric', sorry yeronner!), I'd say. At my office, they like it if you put your diplomas on the wall, but first off, those things don't impress me, so why should I be trying to impress my clients? Secondly, I don't want to have any original diplomas lost because while I was out for the day, some outside guy doing some maintenance job messed them up while w**king on something in my office. (My ...). Okay, how did that wind up with the soapbox under my feet on THAT? Sheesh... But back to you, Chris - thanks for that suggestion on the brake fluid, and I'll try to not leave my structure in it for two weeks.
Robby, I think (from my way too many visits with school/college counselors) that Chris is on-target about taking your time to figure what you want and need (and THEN see what the college offers that is closest to your needs. Best wishes on getting what you need out of college. Oh, I'm partial to that third photo of the Alberta hopper, if you're taking a poll.
Sawyer, TSF, Morgan,... (and all our other younger scholars in here, I mean to cover all of you on this) - I'm sure that from what we've seen of your study habits (by the times you've been out of the Diner studying, or come in for a study break between chapters/papers/etc.), you will be doing fine (and be ahead of a lot of your fellow students, as well).
Oh, Chris - that "What Color Is Your Parachute" book? Not for the faint-hearted! I have w**ked through (some parts of ) THAT. You're talking major mental gymnastics there... And maybe your outlook comes from having been an EMT and/or w**king emergency/fire departments (where you have to be prepared for the worst)? Ah, I see you came to the same decision about THAT. Hey, is that a winterization hatch on the Geep in the B&W photo? (I noticed because when I was looking through the detail parts for my P2K GP7, I saw that they have a winterization hatch among the parts)
TSF - I'll just [ditto] others' comments about not showin' off too much on the ATV, please. We'd prefer for ya not to wind up like Rob's wife's patient. Attending a high school graduation or a dance is kinda hard from a hospital bed... (I'll quit yappin' now...)
And Rob, good to hear it was a simple fix on your 'new' loco. Tried it out on the track much yet?
CudaKen - Just checking, do you have that loco yet, or are you still alive? THAT project sounds like the FPFH (Flooring Project From H***)... As for your BP med, I've seen that (even in my field) some meds are the dickens to get adjusted right (if they w**k right for the patient at all). Talking with your doctor (and pointing out the side effects went away the day you didn't take the med, might get across to him/her that something else might be in order to help your BP (if you even still need it - hey, you could be lucky, right?).

Zandoz - what time period do you model? Modern, 1950's/60's or what? If it's newer, you could probably use some Pikestuff for a small metal building, or if older, use some Walthers or DPM modulars. Or, try this RDA kit. That's assuming you're in HO scale, but Well, from the photo, you might be able to design your own... If you want, put a round water treatment pond next to it, and you got what some smaller towns around here have. Hey,, ask Garry if he has pics of his community park that he will post, if you like the idea of a park.
DerJohn - on your Word gobbledeegook deal, when you're in Edit mode on the forum, click the button here that has 'HTML' on it, and you should see all THAT, so you can cut it out, then click the ('save'?) button at the bottom of that popup window. Might help your problem. Word puts in weird stuff like that at times...
Galaxy, (hopefully) without getting THAT soapbox out of its corner, I'd say the 'medical delay' problem is because, it's not THEIR problem (doctors/HMO's/whoever gets to decide). 'Nuff said... Will add your situation to the prayer list.

Between life & fatigue, haven't made any MRRing time lately, something I must work on. Will head down to the train room tonight, even if it's just to run a train. That will be a step in the right direction.
Latest blood tests show marked improvement. Only hemoglobin is a little low, but when are results EVER completely normal. (probably fluctuations from sarc) Nothing I'm worried about in the least. My wife (RN) is pleased.
Has anyone here had any experience shooting a Baretta Cx4 Storm carbine? If so, would it make a good farm gun?

Todd I will need to do a little research on the weight of the Hemi.I know I have it, just not sure where. If I would have to guess the Hemi is only 100 to 125 heaver than a 440. 440 block is just about the same as a Hemi with the exception of the extra head bosses in the intake valley for the extra head bolts. Heads are about 3" wider and the street Hemi Dual Quad intake was cast iron. Intake is about 20 pounds heaver and the heads around 40 pounds each.
Far as the Peal Brewery fleet I am looking for more if you don't love yours! By the way, how far do you live from Maryville IL. I would not mine wrenching on a old Mopar, maybe get your Runner running? If you like, PM me your number and we can talk. If half way close maybe Allen and I can drive up in the Daytona.
Zandoz Well if anyone would have one it would be Jay. On body panels, when I did the Barracuda the only thing we could buy was the quarter panels. Now that was 6 years ago, so I have no idea what can be bought now as far as sheet metal. Have been in the Body Business, I look at rust damage a little differently than most people. If the rust can be patched, fine. But if the rust is up over the wheel arch time to replaces. Rather it be bubbles or the whole thing like the 67 I posted it is all the same.
Now, I can fix a lot. But some times I have to draw the line. I was doing this 69 Charger and Dan wanted me to save this fender, he did not want to spend $400 on a good rust free one. Sent him this picture so he knew what kind of body filler I would need to fix it!

Another slow day here. At least the war has died down.
cudaken Zanduz I never got to ride in the Turbine car, but do know some about them. I think there is 3 left and one is here in St Louis at the Transportation Museum. I have all so read when Chrysler was done testing the car, they where put on a barrage and dump in the ocean some where out by NYC harbor.
Ken: I'd not heard the story about them being dumped at sea...I guess I'd just assumed that they were crushed. I do know a bit about the survivors...actually there are 9 left. Of the 9 only the 3 that Chrysler initially retained had operating engines. All but 2 of the 9 are in museums, and Jay Leno has the only running one in private hands. Great job on recovering that 67 Barracuda! Of that generation, I always favored the notch-backs over the fast-backs. Back in 96 I passed on a 68 notchback that I could have gotten for less than what it would have cost to get it hauled home, because I thought it was too far gone. From the looks of it you had to start with one even farther gone. Are there replacement panels available for that generation Cuda?
Reality...an interesting concept with no successful applications, that should always be accompanied by a "Do not try this at home" warning.

WE are going to the 60th birthday party for a friend today. "No gifts please", but we feel strange going without something, so taking him a nice yellow rose buttoneer corsage so everyone will know who the B-day boy is! {they all know already or they wouldn't have been invited LOL}. He loves his flowers, indoors and out, and according to his other half he would indeed wear one if we brought it!
Special thoughts and prayers go out to Garry for his 2nd "new" anniversary, and to Ray for his BIL.
Well, I should get showered and dressed so we can get ready to go soon to the party.

Good Morning. Huevos Rancheros please and coffee thank you. Got about an inch of rain last evening and through the night. Kind of cool out there now, but it's suppose to get hot again today. Temps 96 and heat up to 106.
I visited WPF before stopping in and I must say you folks that posted did a great job! I also learned a couple things, Jeff is rebuilding and Ken has a string of Pearl beer cars. I have only three, but that will be sufficient for my distributorship.
Jeff- I'm sorry to see the ol layout go. It has been kind of a staple during my return to MRR. I recall as I was cruising the forums kind of incognito before actually joining one, that, for some reason I really liked your layout and was always drawn to it. I was glad to find you frequented this forum and thread when I first signed up. I can't say that is why, but it sure didn't hurt any. I think probably two reasons I like your layout so much is, one, many pictures showed "stuff" sitting around and you were not afraid to show pictures of a less than perfect setup, giving me a sense of do-ability. A down to earth reality picture of a layout. Probably something that deep down I knew mine would look like and it just felt comfortable and reassuring to me. Also there seems to be a sense of serious whimsy about parts of your layout if you know what I mean. Same with Ray's. Though it is a great layout, there seems to be a lot of fun built in. Little funny pokes at being less than serious. That's kinda the way I am and want the same for my layout. I'm sure you're sorry to see it go, but at the same time, are we ever really sad to start another one?
I see his point on the pop ups. I will have to have a duck under myself. I can't avoid it if I want the greater good.
Garry- I'm glad you made no mention of injuries. Oh and a belated HAPPY 2nd ANNIVERSARY!!! Kinda like having two birthdays isn't it
Tim- Can't say I'm a big fan of KISS, but I do like them. I also like Gene Simmons Family Jewels. They seem like, actually, a normal family. Not all celebrity types. Just normal people. And Gene's not what I expected for a "Rock God"...., but that hair!
Galaxy- Yes you are right up there among the top prayer list people. Maybe if you place the prayer candle in the room were Ricky Rodent met his demise, it'll burn off some of the smell. He works in mysterious ways they say.
TSF- Hard to say on the diner. Seems it looks different to many folks. Though no one has ever mentioned a second floor, doesn't mean there can't be one for rail fanning.
Charlie- Dogs are smarter than we give them credit. Ours, Missy, looks at where you point instead of at your hand that is pointing like they say she is suppose to. She also knows a mirror is a reflection and looks behind her if you do something she sees in the mirror.
Ken- Yup, but the weight of the engine was the main problem with the street. Just too heavy for real short runs. But..... I'll have to tell you the story of a guy I knew back in the day with a hot tunnel rammed small block Chevelle some time. He whooped up on a Hemi all over town but what happened when he went out and went a quarter mile with the same car made him change his mind. He won. Barely, but said he would not run a Hemi again in the quarter.
Welp, today is my 30th year class reunion. It will be held at the lake in Springfield. They've made it an all school reunion due to the small amount that could make it. Aside from the heat it should be good to see those that I see almost every day again today. That is about noonish. You know when it's cooler than at say 4. Then we must go do some things at mom's house. Slow going this week as my good ol back and knees have decided to exhibit what I was retired for and it has been kinda painful to move. At least my toes only tingle. I can still feel them. Getting better, today the verts are closer to in line so the pain and numbness is going away. Biiiig difference starting yesterday, so I should be doin fine by tomorrow or Monday. Baring anything stupid. Tomorrow is shot as it is Veterans Day at the ILLINOIS STATE FAIR!!!! and Brenda insists that we go to the fair at least one day. That day because it is free to Vets. However, we always park in the infield on the fairgrounds, and when you add the inflated price the fairgrounds charges for parking above what it cost off the grounds and right across the street, it costs the same. She claims it's our only "our time" together. Nice try on her part, but it makes her happy so....
ANOTHER big problem. NOW I have to figure out when I'm going to weasel the oven fried catfish in that Ryan sent and for some reason just sounds like I want to try it NOW!
Oh my!!! Would you look at the length of this thing. I've rambled long enough. Too much in fact.

Rob I am out of the body shop business and the building was a dump! The only good thing about it was it was big. There are times I miss body work, but as a whole I am glad I am out of it. You want to talk about a business where anything that can go wrong will go wrong!
Todd Far as the street Hemi, main problem is race engines do not make good street engines. They need a lot more maintenance to keep them at peak HP, well back then they did. Most folks did not keep the valves adjusted and the street Hemi need it's cam replaced at around 10,000 miles.
Keith It won't fit on your layout, but here a few pictures of a 67 Barracuda we did. You want to talk about a car that looked like death but it was a 11.05 car. Mike won $200.00 the day he took it home by betting friends it was the same car and they did not believe him. We put the top on the car because I could not fix the roof, looked like someone had tapped danced on it. I laid the strip by hand, no decals where available.
On the wood putty, I need to re read your post. But I need to fill good sizes sections that are missing in the sub floor.
Zanduz I never got to ride in the Turbine car, but do know some about them. I think there is 3 left and one is here in St Louis at the Transportation Museum. I have all so read when Chrysler was done testing the car, they where put on a barrage and dump in the ocean some where out by NYC harbor.

Train front I did get the Athearn RTR Dash 9 going after 2 years! Hard to believe, but I found most of the small parts that broke off it when it hit the floor last year! Again, nothing but praise for the NCE decoders! Runs much faster at the same power percent and starts at 1% now!

Other than taking cover, and trying to avoid the heat and humidity, not much going on here. We did manage getting the filler strip put in the cutdown HCD, and got a couple coats of urethane on it yesterday...today nothing.
GMTRacing Zanoz - The typical pump house would be brick, large double doors to get the pumps in and out of, none or a few small windows up high and a man door. Pretty rudimentary stuff and I'll leave it to our other more knowledgeable readers to chime in on possible pre-builts. I have a Walthers prefab water tower and think it's great.
JR: Except for having big instead of small windows, that pretty much describes the Walthers Dayton Machine structure....Hmmmmmmm
Ken: Thought of you tonight when I saw a "For Sale" ad for an old 60s MOPAR that I've always craved...67 Sport Fury. Looked to be in decent shape, and not too unreasonably priced, but since my driving days are over, it would be foolish to persue it. One day we'll have to chat MOPARs. My dad was roommate in the 30s with a guy who ended up being a Chrysler VP in the 50s and 60s. From 55 thru 68 dad got a series of specially built Plymouth wagons with monster motors and other oddities, through him. Also, when I was around 7 or 8, we got a ride in one of those 60s turbine car prototypes...I've been in love with that car ever since.
Not sure what tomorrow will bring here in the war zone, but I need to get to Radio Shack to pick up some wiring supplies. I want to get as much of the wiring as possible done on the bottom of the HCD, before I start working on the top side.

Seems to me I said I would send some cooler air down Iowa way to Chris but it might be a little cooler than I first thought. We are headed for a high of 65F tomorrow and 55F on Sunday with rain. We're going to the race track tomorrow with some friends for dinner and I just might place a bet or two. I've only been out there once before so it should be an experience. Luckily the restaurant is under glass and out of the weather.
Ran trains for a little while tonight. I had the CPR running with a SW9 on the point doing a little road switching along the way. It's a really nice little engine(PK2). I then put the RS3 on the tracks and will run it a little over the weekend. Might put together some trees too as it will be too crummy outside on Sunday to do much else.
Ray, sorry to hear about the BIL and hope he finds peace.
Well we always knew little Robbie was a smart dog but it is starting to get really spooky. My wife was sitting on the floor beside him the other night and turned off the 'beggin strip' commercial as he gets really wound up when he sees the dog on the TV. Robbie promptly leaned over and hit the remote, which was still in her hand, with his nose. "Turn that back on Mummy!"

Last time I saw him was in mid June at my Granddaughter's birthday party. He was skin and bones then, but had his old fire in his grin. He weighed 121lbs (I think my SIL said) at that time and is now less than 90...... Bernie is a "chip off the old block" of his dad. He could build almost anything and make it work. Bernie once created a "wood burning" lawn mower. It had a modified gas engine that ran on the unburned fumes from a wood fire........ Yes it ran! Not well enough to mow the lawn, but it ran.
BTW, Jeff, I like the new plan for yout layout. It should give you considerably more room in the trailer.

Well I took the Yaris in for its 15,000 mile service thingy with about 18,000 actual miles on her. Just as I was leaving the waiting room (saw the car brought out and parked) I stopped to give a to a guy sitting there using a MacBook Pro and listening to iTunes. He looked a bit familiar, but I couldn't place him. He took off his earbuds, looked at me and said, "Mr. Howard right? Weren't you my Middle School Music Teacher....?" Turns out he is the son of one of the School Board members back when I taught him. We had a good chat!
I then headed out to the Local Hospital to see my BIL. He wasn't in his room when I got there, but a nurse at the desk told me to go down to a waiting room and wait. She would come down and get me as soon as he was brought back up. I went down the hall and looked around and the only thing close was a room half filled with Beds, Chairs, and medical equipment.... So I went back to the desk and asked where exactly the "waiting room" was. The lady told me right down the hall and to the left.... It is the room with the televisions in it. So I hoof back down the hall and figure out she means the room I was looking at before as it has a little corner in the back of it that was outfitted like a small lounge with a television and a few magazines. (They are doing the every other year remodeling so I figured the other stuff was in there for temporary storage.) I waited for over an hour, and nobody came down to get me. So I decide to go back over to the desk to see what was going on.... passed my BIL's room and he is in the bed.... I stayed all of 5 or so minutes and chatted a bit with him as he looked really tired.
Doubt he will be with us much longer. He is skin and bones....... Looks like the photos of the prisoners back in WW2. He still wants to go out to the museum in a week for Diesel Days. Doubt very much he will make it.
Well, I need to gather all the stuff together for tomorrow's NMRA Picnic.

Welp. I's be doing the weekend thing for w**k--strapped to the beeping beeper all fragging fricker ricker weekend. Don't mind my grumbling grouching.
I'm going too spend the weekend trying too reorganize my workspace downstairs---again.

In looking through my stock of spare Bachmann EZ-Track I find that I have plenty of curves but very few straights. I have therefore placed an order for 6 packs of the stuff today through the Shopatron network. It has already been shipped from Hobbytown USA of Dallas and is on it's way. I should have it at the latest by this time next week. Maybe by that time I'll have most of the old track (in areas that will be removed) pulled up. I have a bucket of water standing by to drop them into to remove the glue and ballast. I hope to be able to reuse the turnouts. If not I'll just have to order more. I'm glad one of my family members (who shall remain nameless) is a closet model railroader and is footing the bill. Regrettably one of the things on the layout that will have to go is Ezra's Exxon station. Hopefully I'll be able to put it down in another location. The park and it's sandlot baseball diamond and K4 locomotive display will also be coming up. I hope to put it down in the area that's now occupied by the Shell station. I'll probably cut that structure and use the front of it against the backdrop. The north engine house and the foundry will also be pulled up. Bob's hot dog stand will also be looking for a new home. The south engine house (old Walthers structure I got in the 70's) will be pulled up. It's footprint will be relocated slightly and it will be replaced with the north engine house structure which is also a Walthers structure, the backwoods engine house and car barn. There is also a Pola car barn which will be relocated. It's going to be a lot of work but the new layout is almost ready to jump off the planning sheet and become a reality. It's kind of a shock going from 2 loops to one but the inside loop was always rather boring anyway. It's just an oval with an inside spur. But pieces of it will be used in the creation of the new track layout. That's enough for now. I wouldn't want to bore anyone.
Afternoon, just dropping by to pin my latest layout plan on the bulletin board, I'm gonna go lift weights and do a bit of running. I wanna be the best rugby player I can be and that starts with getting in shape.
Size=6x8I finally have the run for both the grades. Now I want to mess around with the location of the spurs in the town, and I may add an excursion RR in the empty lobe.The train would leave, do one full lap then run to the passing siding, run around its train, and do a full lap+return.
We're going to Augusta tonight to eat at Subway and go see Karate Kid at the $2 movies, so see you folks tomorrow!
