Justin ,one way to darken ballast is to put full strength coffee in a spray bottle and spray the ballast. First cover the tops of the rails with masking tape. You can control the color by how heavy you wet the ballast. It is best to do light applications and let it dry in between. You can always go back and darken it if it needs it.    RON

I've been working on my ore-mining scene, got the mountains roughed in and the track ballasted, although the colour turned out a bit light:

I took the whole scene out into the garden to work on, I didn't plan it like that but as it happens this sits on top of some buried track and was really easy to take off. Much easier and better than working on it on the layout, since it is too far back and too high to reach easily.

I like the wood chip load, Tyler.  Where did you get the material and how did you make the load?

Jarrell

Thanks! I started with an old removable "coal load" for a 40' hopper that was flat black plastic and looked really fake that was sitting in my parts bin. I slopped on a thick coat of tan paint and then covered it with sawdust I saved while building my benchwork.

Wolfgang,

I greatly enjoying viewing your YouTube videos featuring realistic railroad operations and outstanding scenery.

Cool seeing this steamer. What colors and techniques did you use to weather it?

This engine was weathered by my friend Pete. I've learned from him and weathered my MIke this way, here's the HowTo and here.

Here's a new woodchip load I built.

And just because, an older photo that I don't *think* I've posted here before. A leased CSX U23B leads intermodal hotshot WJNA through Enfield, NH.

Just posted it the last page but here goes again:

First go to www.photobucket.com and start a free account and follow the instructions to activate it.

Second upload the pics you want to post using the upload button in photobucket.  It's very easy.

Third open a picture in photobucket.  There will be 4 selections to the left. One is Img code. Click in the box to the right of the words img code.  It will automatically flash copied.

Fourth.  Reply to a post here and in the area you type right click your mouse and select paste.  The link to the picture will paste.

Click post and your picture will be there.

If you have any questions while trying ask away.

I wish I could post some pictures but there is NOTHING here to show us how. No little picture symbol or anything. why is it so difficult and why do they not post how?

Upload your photos to Photbucket (free account), then copy and paste the IMG into your post on this forum.

Tomkat, I love your scenes. Cool

-Crandell

Crandell thanks for the praise, your photos of steam action are awesome. Since my Canon Power Shot bit the dust I finally took the plunge and got a digital SLR camera. These photos this week are with my new Pentax K-X. It will take some time to learn how to use all the custom features. Thanks again tkat

Thanks for the tips Garry. I think I'll give it a try using Hydrocal. Yeah, I'm a sucker for the blue and orange as I grew up watching them go by on the tracks near my house. I now live about five minutes from the CN/GTW Tappan yard and on the US side of the river across from the CN's big yard in Sarnia, Ont. Thanks again.         Gerry S.

Great work so far.

Just some quick shots, looking at the New River Mine, it certianly needs some weathering and work on the ground surrounding it.

MRL working once again with unpainted patched SD45s.  There is not much time to take these hard working units out of service to ship over to get painted.

Hawksridge

Hamltnblue- The CSX locomotive is in the factory paint colors. I used chalks to "fade" the paint and added some rust spots. The weathering is similar to CSX locomotives I have seen here in FL that are exposed to many months of sun and the paint washes out. Also taking photos outdoors in strong sunlight will wash out the colors. Thanks for the comments.

TY

They looked a little on the orange side so I though it might be a camera or lighting issue.
