Transition from Plywood to Corkbed
Posted by cudaken on Tuesday, May 4, 2010 3:57 PM

As many of you know my train layout started as a HO slot car bench and became a HO train bench. I had laid down a thin (no backing) outdoor carpet for the slot cars. Fine for slot cars. When I got into trains, slot car track came up and track was spike on top of the carpet.

Train layout grew and there is now around 300 feet of track laid. It tracks well but looks goofy.

I am going to rip up the carpet and track in around 10 foot sections at a time and add cork roadbed. I know I can sand the cork roadbed to make the transition to the carpet laid track. Just looking of a idea how long the transition should be.

Carpet is thin, about half the thickness of the cork roadbed. Taking a shoot at a guess I would say 6" might work. Hard part is going to be the turnouts.

Time to make it look like a adult layout, Ken

Ken, just remove the carpet from under the turnouts first and leave the shims for the straight track (if this is practical. 6 inches should be OK and remember, it is only temporary!!!!!
