Ray, I don't know if there is a switch in them or not, but it is possible for a part to be designed to last for only so long. The instructor for some of the mechanical engineering classes I took mentioned that some places he worked for had them design parts that would fail shortly after the warranty period. Maybe that's the reason the old starter on my car broke after 375 days, after having a one year warranty (previous owner at least left the reciept for me; I now have one with a lifetime warranty). I think the new photo looks good though.
Jeff, that is a really nice looking switcher there!
Lee, those are the B-mann GP7s you're talking about right? What do the innards look like on them? I've though about getting some to paint up for BN.
Vincent
Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....
2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.
Afternoon foks!
Zoe I'll have a toasted cheese sandwich and a bowl of tomato soup for lunch along with a cup of decafe if you please. I'll go sit at the rivet counter for a bit!
Sun has decided to peek through the clouds for a bit. Seems good to have the temp a bit more seasonable rather than the 80° stuff last week. A guy from a company working for the city of Geneva putting in new water meters was here and replaced mine with a new one. They are replacing all the meters in the city. The meter reader will just have to drive by the house to record the water usage from now on. Uses a technology similar to cell phones he said. Took him less than 20 minutes start to finish.
Just got a call from the doge dealership service dept. They can get my lights to work sometimes and then not work sometimes..... Looks like it will set me back about $600 to replace the parts to get it back. I still think they put a switch in some components THAT disable things after a certain time (like after the warranty is over. It is a 2002 model Dakota, so I guess I can expect a few repairs.
Spent a bit more time playing with Photoshop.... So..... Is this an improvement???
Let me know what you think.

We'll get there sooner or later!
Good Evening,
the sun is setting at this side of the Big Pond, time to join you for a little supper - a bowl of Mexican Chili and a Coors to wash it down - no, Zoe, no driving to be done today. What? My driver´s license? Not again - yes, I am old enough for a beer - thank you.
Did not get much done today - just a little bit of daydreaming of better times to come. Prepared a track plan for a guy from the UK, who wants to model the Beer Line in N scale. Did I expect a thank you
Christian will be joining us tomorrow night. I have rented a trailer, one of those UHaul things, and on Wednesday, we will take some of the stuff he wanted to have to his new apartment in Hannover. Will keep me busy for that day.
Well, I´ll be off for the day!
Good (Lunchtime?)/whatever, Zoe, I'll have a RBF and a BLT with a pickle spear, please. Thanks!
After watching Ray's and Ulrich's photos, I see "...Lions and tigers and bears, oh my!" Todd and JR, I understand the... uh, 'tailors' will be there soon to fit you for those wonderful white jackets (since it's spring already and all..).
We're supposed to miss all that fun stuff that'll be heading through Chris' neck o' the woods. Weatherguesser said most all of it will be at or north of the I-70 line across Missouri (but might just fizzle out before it reaches Todd, Jerry or Inch's areas).
Not too busy at w**k this morning (and we like it like that on a Monday!), some coming in, but able to keep up (and to take a little time to stop by the Diner for lunch). May it continue...
I'll just sit a spell by the window booth and enjoy my lunch this sunny day. (non-flatulent lunch, that is)
Blessings,
Jim in Cape Girardeau
Mornin' everyone!
Zoe I'll have a couple of eggs, over easy, and a double order of sourdough toast to go along with my morning brew.
Thanks for the comments on the Photos. I have only seen a few videos of steams coming out of tunnels and what Ulrich showed is what I remember. I am going to have a bit more w*rk on the photo to get it right I think. I have a month to put all this together.....
Currently 57°F under cloudy skies here in the Finger Lakes. High should be around 70°F with a chance of some showers. Yesterday there were two major brush fires in the area. One was on an island in Motezuma National Wildlife Refuge near Seneca Falls, and another near Victor, NY. The last several days of very low humidity and lots of sun have put us under a fire danger alert. Very, very unusual for this time of year.
Well I see my eggs are up so I'll head for the front booth and watch the activity for a while!
Good mornin', bucket of coffee please and thank-you...
RAY: I'm liking your pics. With no point of reference to base this on...I'm gonna say the more smoke, the better! And yes...I see the little doggie with the rope too!!! But, THAT said, I was playing with Testor's Liquid Plastic Cement and Floquil paints last night...
TODD: Glad THAT line of storms petered-out for you last night. We're expecting another round late this afternoon, and again tomorrow afternoon. Warm front today, cold front tomorrow...T-storms with a "slight risk for severe" both days. They're talking high winds, heavy rain, hail, even a twisty-thing or two. Yippee...spring is here!
KEITH: So........a whole lot of shakin' goin' on 'eh? Glad you folks rode it out OK. Storms here, earthquakes there... I guess Mother Nature will find a way to getcha...one way or another!
JEFF: Nice looking KCS switcher! Whoda thunk THAT primer gray could look so good???
Welp, I'd best get to it...even though I'm not quite sure exactly which "it" to get to...

Good morning all. Coffee and a breakfast burrito please Thank you. Bookwork at the Church then who knows what before going to work at 5.
I see Ulrich has supplied a picture to add visual to what Jeff said.
J.R.- Thank you. I'm not seeing things. Aaaand, it took a bit, but I see Pecos! They can haul us off together for a nice long rest.
Galaxy- The forums aren't tied to MRR subscription, so I wouldn't think that'd change. And I wouldn't think that the mag you subscribe to (aparently ? ) first would have a bearing on your account. You'll just drop a mag, not the account. Sounds reasonable to me.
Best get a move on, I need to sharper mower blades.
Have a Great Day!!!
EDIT: Ditto what Jeff just said. I was a Forum member, but not a magazine subscriber for a while before I began subscribing. My Account name did not change, nor did anything else when I started subscribing, except I could see subscriber content on the magazine side of the site. I don't see your situation being anything different other than them just drop the subscriber side perks instead of adding them.

Jeff, I have a set of GP7’s I plan on doing the same thing to them for the same reasons, plus I’m going to install one sound decoder, but see if I can configure the available power to operate two speakers.

cloudy and supposedto rain here today, Yippy. Grass is nice and green though.
The *** willows have burst already- another sign of spring.
Not much planned today have to birthday shop for my other half but I'm doing that ala chair ala computer.
Ray I like the second pic better. To me it just looks more realisitic I think.
Got my new Trains mag and new MRR mag along with renewals. sheesh they send those out early enough. I will NOT renew MRR but will keep Trains and Classic Trains mags. We find reading about the real trains more exciting. SInce my membership to the board here was tied to my MRR subscription, I wonder if they will boot me and I have to come back as new guy under my Trains subscritption????
ANybody know about that?
Well have great day everybody!

LSWrrJeff, Bachmann has really improved since the 70’s and 80’s. I look forward to hearing how that GP30 works for you.
Good morning. It was sunny, but now we are having a light rain shower.
Well its off to work in a few minutes. That's my plan for the day.
Keith.......Glad everything is ok your way. Seems like it was a big one, well a few states felt it.
Ray,........I like both shots.
I hope everybody has a good day.

Ray: I've only seen a steam locomotive coming out'n a tunnel once and it seemed more along what Ulrich posted. The smoke box was just covered in smoke and going straight up--it was something to behold--

Good morning all,Jeff, Bachmann has really improved since the 70’s and 80’s. I look forward to hearing how that GP30 works for you.Keith, I hope everything has settled down since the grounds shake the other day.I wired 2 out of 3 rotary switches successfully, I have to re-do the third one, not sure what happened but I mixed up some of the wires.
Good Morning All,
a regular and a donut for me please Zoe. I see we're now reading smoke plumes instead of tea leaves and I agree Todd - there is a terrier perched above the stack of Rays loco but I don't see Santee Claus, just the lionel kids face in the folds of smoke upper left. Oh yeah, and Ulrichs' photo has Pecos Pete riding a horse with his lariat going above him. Did I stay up too late last night watching the UConn game?
Gott a run - lots to do today but first that coffee! CUL, J.R.
Good Morning,
here in Germany, we still have a day off. It is kind of gray and wet outside, so I guess there won´t be much outdoor activity today.
Janie, may I have my usual French breakfast, please, but make it 3 croissants this time, thank you.
Keith - I am glad the earthquake did not cause any damage in your area.. Scary thing isn´t it? In our neck of the woods, earthquakes are unheard of - we are more likely to get wet feet being close to sea level...
Ray - I still have memories of steam locos coming out of a tunnel. Long before you could see the loco, there would be smoke "flowing" out of the tunnel. When the loco comes out of the tunnel, the smoke box is covered in a cloud of smoke, but the exhaust would be straight up.
I just love your pictures!
CUL, folks!
Jeff, Nice pic.
And.. just a Good Morning to my friend and his wife Petra. I know you'll be getting up.. as I .. one on the west coast USA.. is always last... for everything.. going to bed and gettin up.
For all of those concerned about the earthquake.. we thank you.
Let me tell ya.. that earthquake was a dilly. I was just sitting down at my chair/computer and it started. I immediately looked at the clock and started counting. I can't even remember whhat it felt like exactly nor did I read the previous post of mine.
But I did ask Jeanne .. lol. "So what was that anyways.. I mean.. I heard on the news that it was a 6.9 quake."
"I mean hon, come on .. that went on for over a minute and it was a rolling one.. and we're like at least 200 miles away".. "And what was that rolling with crumbling and crashing sounds.. like deep from within~!".. lol.. "Ya know~ like big bouders in caverns.. crashing and tumbling.. I mean.. I WAS Waiting!.. for us to go crashing into some deep cavern..lol" (btw.. native Calfornians take great pride in guessing the magnitude of the quake on the scale) .. "that felt like more ..of a 7.0 or maybe even a 7.2"
lol.. Jeanne replies, " Well... ~ the news said something like it could have been maybe a 7.2.. they're not sure"
then Jeanne goes on.. and says.. "It felt like a rolling / jumpy one"
"All I can say hon, I glad we we'ren't at the epicenter.. those people must have really gotten shook"
So .. thats about it as far as I can report / update on the quake.. no damage here.. and just a side note.
Those rolling ones are scary. Darn right put the fear of God in ya.. Big Medicine~ And the only way to describe it, would be to straighten out the blanket on your bed.. you give it a good flick.. and the blanket kinda rolls down the way~ .. all the way.. with a up and down action. Now this lasted over a minute.. and I got a headache from it.. all this up and down.. back and forth.. for over a minute. You just sit there.. wondering.. wow.. if this gets any worse.. I might get up and head for a door-way! Only Natives just sit there and act like nothing is going on~
Ray: In videos and old railfan films I've watched the smoke coming out of the tunnel when the loco emerges is thickest at the top and gets lighter as you go down until it's almost halfway down the sides of the loco. This was one of the reason the crew (in many cases) had to wear breathing masks while in the tunnel so they wouldn't suffocate in the thick smoke.
Ray- I don't know. I think I like the first one better. But, never being around a steamer let alone one coming from a tunnel, shoot, come to think of it we have no tunnels around here so I've never personnally seen a diesel come out of one, I only have an imagination to go by. And, using my imagination, there seems to always be a cheerleading squad coming out of the tunnel and I have to save them because they are dangerously close to that train!!! But anyway, I would think, and I probably am wrong so give it some thought first, as you brought to my attention before, the ceiling of the tunnel would be flooded with smoke and would be wider than the newer picture. Or so I would think. Maybe you could try, on the first picture, unless it's gone, on the picture right, to remove what appears to be shadowing on the far right of the smoke starting about two blocks down from the top and up to the picture top, leave the lighter billows. The left I think looks ok.
Wow, this is something I've never done before. Probably oughta get someone who's actually seen one or at least paid attention in the movies. THAT's what I'm trying to recall. Usually, I'm looking at the train and not the smoke.
Storms heading this way petered out so for that I'm grateful.
Prayers for those in need and for those who are involved with the earthquake.
EDIT: Say! Does anyone else see in Ray's picture, in the smoke directly above the trains left number board. a dogs face pulling a whistle rope with it's paw? Or have I had one too many RBF's.
EDIT AGAIN: OMG! and above that is Santa Claus! I need to get some sleep.
Evening and Happy Easter all!The photo didn't come out too well, but the egg did!

Happy late easter greetings!!!
So I've been tied up lately with doing homework in the last 2 days of my spring break. I don't know why instructors would assign homework over spring break anyways, it just seems wrong and very few actually do any of it. But back to the college I go tommorow, and back to the crazy instructors (the Religion and English teachers are crazy, the Psychology teacher is pretty cool though).
Tourist season down here has officailly started. Work is crazy busy, and it can take half an hour to get to home from work (8 miles) with all the tourists on the roads. Suprisingly I don't think any of the spring breakers have managed to get themselves killed; yet.
Jeff, Thanks for The Package. I'll put the cars to good use (well, after I get more Kadees and metal wheelsets).
Keith, good to hear you're alright. Wonder if Bridge Tom made it out okay too.
Jim, Hope you get the issue with the laptop straightened out.
GMTRacingWelcome back David. Is the Harvey House you mention the restored version and does it have any connection with Xanterra who now apparently run the Grand Canyon Railroad? Nosey people want to know? J.R.

TMarshRay- Yes, looks much better to me. I see what you mean about the smoke coming from the tunnel. Didn't think of that. Now, let's talk about sweet tea and strawberry shortcake. SUGAR OVERLOAD!!!! I LOVE IT!!!!!!!

Thanks Todd... Just put another up. Let me know how you like it.
Oh yes, I did happen to forget to bring my Metformin for the Diabetes with me. Took it as soon as I got home!
Evening folks!
Flo just a glass of swamp water for me. just finished feast #2 for the day. Baked ham, salt potatoes, baked beans, rolls, corn, sweet tea, and strawberry shortcake for dessert.... Goooooooooooooood!
OK Todd, how about this:
Or maybe this one?
Part of the smoke with this is supposed to be the smoke coming out of the tunnel itself as the loco is blasting from the tunnel to the open track. THAT is what I am trying to achieve anyway. The light is on because it was.... well.... in the tunnel. BTW this was about a 12 second exposure and the light was turned on for about a second. Yep I used the photo shot at f/20 the other was I think the shot using the medium telephoto/macro lens. It wasn't focused exactly right to do what I wanted. These are all a work in progress anyway. Thanks for your input!
Keith! Scary....... Looks like a big one down South in the Baha area.
#1 granddaughter had her picture in today's local paper. She was at an Easter egg hunt yesterday. Chris is THAT the one you covered? Nah, probably not.
Hope you all have a great evening!
Evening, I'm stuffed. Mom wanted to go to the Lone Star Steakhouse. Once again they did .
Keith_ Glad you're OK just heard about it in the news. Sounds like Baja? I might have misunderstood though.
Wonder how Tom is (California Tom that is)
Jeff- Not DCC, but I have a DC Bman GP-40 and much to the chagrin of some, it functions great. Can't imagine why your 30 wouldn't.
Jim- Good luck with the laptop.
Ray- The right side (picture right) smoke looks better than the left IMO of course. A bit thin I think. Also, do you think the smoke would billow out quite that low to the stack? Don't know myself, just seems it should carry narrower a bit farther. Just a thought, you may have a different idea of what you're going for. By the way, I see you chose to use my favorite one to play with. Or was it the other one.
I'm gonna skeedaddle now. Barry and salad can only mean one thing....., And THAT won't be no whoopee cushion!
galaxy Blazzin Oh hey.. yeah.. we got hit with an earthquake.. just now! For over a minute.. a lasting.. jumpy / rolling one. Lasted over a minute.. closer to a minute and 20 secs. From Huntington beach.. this was felt deep.. somewhat distant from us.. and somewhere else could have been hit much harder.. that.. just us.. with a rolling one. bye Hope you stay safe. We will add a prayer candle for those out your way. Join the club there has been a rash of earthquakes all over the planet.

There were 2 reported just now. One to the south of you in the US/Mexico border region by Tijuana which was at a preliminary strength of 6.9, and the other in northern California which was reported at a 4.3.
Sheesh---
