Coffee, please.

Luigi, the last of our Italian Greyhounds passed away this afternoon. He was as old as dirt and sweet as could be. RIP little buddy!

 Afternoon everyone!

Zoe just a RBF to tide me over to suppertime.  I'll be sitting at the Rivet Counter for a while........

There are only a select few who find the need to compete in the awards that NMRA give out. And if that is good for them, I'm glad.

Johnboy, please bear with me for a moment.  I feel a need to "correct" some of what you said here. The NMRA Achievement Program is not a "contest" and you don't "compete" in it.  It is rather a series of benchmarks to shoot for as an individual.  I would compare it with the Boy Scout Merit Badge Program rather than see it at any kind of contest.  When you complete the requirements for the Merit Badge, you receive it.  The same is true of the NMRA AP!  The AP is one way to learn new skills and work to perfect them to a level worthy of the award.  I have so far earned the Model Engineer - Electrical and the Master Builder - Scenery Certificates as well as the Golden Spike Award.  I am presently completing the Model Engineer - Civil Certificate.  On this journey I have had the mentoring and guidance of some of the finest people (and great modelers) I have ever met.  I hope the improvement in my personal skills is evident in the photos I have put here on line.  Hopefully, all of us are trying to improve our skills in the hobby!  You are right that there are many ways to do THAT. Smile,Wink, & Grin

last mountain & eastern hogger
With my allotment of time, I don't have that interest, but that doesn't make it wrong either.

Absolutely correct and understood!  If you are an NMRA Member, you might take a closer look at the AP as you may have already finished the requirements on some of the certificates........  It is always nice to recieve some recognition for the skills you have learned!

Later!

Rob- Sorry about Luigi. Sounds like you had a lot of good memories andhe live a good long life.

Swayin- I promised I'd give it a rest, but.......... I post pictures for two reasons. 1- because I like to show what I've been doing to those who share the same interest as me and 2- to get feedback. That is my sticking point to it all. I don't want false praise to make me feel better. Yes. there is an ego thing involved, we all like to here someone likes what we've done, but that is not what I expect. What I would like, is someone to tell me what I've done right, so to speak. That is not however necessary, because a non mention of something while discussing is as good as a " I like that" or  "it's not too aweful bad, we'll work on that later" to me. What I would expect is someone to make comments on what I could do to improve. Doesn't have to be sugar coated, just a coment, "too much rust here" " overdone on the mud or dirt there" even " it looks like it's been painted instead of rusted." is ok and I won't take offense. I will look at what others have said and take what I can and work wth it. It would be nice for a bit of a nudge as to what to do, but sometimes it's not that easy to determine what needs to be done, it "just doesn't look right" is the best that we can do. I don't expect anyone to view things as I do. What I don't expect or want is when someone crosses the line between offering suggestions on modeling and enters into the personal insults. To state that a person is an idiot or stupid or the like because they believe, or view things or do things the way they do is, in my opinion just rude and uncalled for. That serves no purpose. It does not happen often to me because I stay mostly in here. A disagreement is always handled with respect to others views. There have been times when someone has come busting through the door with both barrels blazing, but not often. That does irritate me as well as when they do it to someone else. I try to bite my tongue because I am not the forum moderator, nor have I been asked to be a personal body guard. Unfortunately it puts the event in the forefront of my mind, and like  ma-na-ma-na, it's hard to shake.

An FAQ would be nice, but I'm afraid very difficult to keep up.

Oh great. I did it again. OK this time for the sake of most I'll drop the subject, like Johnboy said, we deal with it every day in all aspects.  Somebody take the horse outta here and away from me.

Good news, taxes are done and in the mail. Bad news it cost me. Again.

Well in just a few minutes my trip to the layout room has been post poned. looks like I'm off to fix the AC on a tractor. Or try. Some farmers are cheap and like to "rig" things. Then complain and act like you ripped them off because it didn't last for 10 years. Sigh I still like 'em though.

Went to Autozone this afternoon to get the battery. I had called there this morning to see if they had it and they said yes and that the price was $85. When I got there they tried selling me a 900 amp battery for $150. I wasn't falling for that. I got what I went there for. The 75-DL(G) isn't 900 amps anymore. It's 875, but that's close enough. I tested my theory earlier today about the amps vs volts. I got my father's battery charger which has a 50 amp boost/start. When I tried to start the car with the battery with a 100% charge the starter just clicked. When I turned on the 50 amp boost it kicked right over. That seemed pretty conclusive. When the old battery was tested under load it read out as having 200 or less amps. That's bad. Getting the new battery from the store to my father's truck then from the truck to the car took quite a big hit at me, so I'll have to rest before I install it. I can't do much with the pain in my ankle trying to blow the top of my head off.

Rob: My condolences on your dog. I know how it is. I've lost several very old cats and felt the same way.

Robby: No matter how good you get I'll still respect you.

Afternoon ya'll

Got the car back from the AC shop. Getting it converted to R134, getting it filled set me back $160. There goes trains for a few months Blindfold

I got all those cars I got put together and weighted for now. They all need Kadees and Metal wheelsets, and a few neeed stirrups. On top of that, I ran out of pastels.I do know someone who has enough Kadee wheelsets to do 14 cars, but they are all ribbed back and are too old for my era. I'll finish up the car first and consider a 2nd job for the summer to help there.

Rob, Sorry to hear about Luigi, My condolences

Keith, Maybe that is one more reason to stay single Laugh I get that a lot from people I know when I weather something I just bought.

Robby, I'd rather have an AC on than the windows down. The AC doesn't cause drag, and is probably better on mileage than the windows down. (Mythbusters proved that with a pair of Expiditions, I think it applies to my car as well.)

Vincent

Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....

2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.

I got the car battery installed and everything is hooked up. Went to start it and it started right up as it's supposed to. Glad that's done because I really overdid it today. Getting the old battery to the truck was an ordeal in itself. After I got the new one I had to go through it again, only this time from the truck to the car. I took my father's truck back to my parent's house then had to get a ride back home, and it's less than a block! I can barely get around right now. Tomorrow I'll be doing a whole bunch of nothing! Anybody wants me to do something outside they can go fly a milk bottle!

Hey Tim!  Good to see ya sir!

I got almost all the rest of the lawn mowed.  All except about 50 sq. feet back of the house.  Ran out of  Battery and sunlight at the same time....  The part I was mowing tonight was in places over 6" high and very thick (and damp) so I don't feel too bad.  One of my neighbors who was out for his evening walk stopped and asked a bunch of questions about the B&D Battery Lawn Mower.  He had seen me mowing several times last year with it and thought it was great.  He plans on getting one soon as his old gas one is on it's last legs.  I still need to run the trimmer, so I will finish the little section tomorrow.

Today when I went over to my son's house to watch the granddaughters, the older one was up and the little one was sound asleep...  Opposite of yesterday.  Olivia and I put together a jigsaw puzzle she has about 10 times.  She is very good for not being 3 yet finding and figuring out a jigsaw puzzle.  She and Grandpa have a great time together even if we can't come over to my house to play trains....  Emily was still sound asleep when I left.  Olivia's grandmother was in surgery this afternoon to put in drain for the cyst and to see first hand what is going on in there.  She had an episode of very high blood pressure earlier in the day so they postponed the surgery until they had it back in control.  I will find out tomorrow what is going on and when she should be coming back home to my son's house (She now lives with them).  My DIL has asked me to come over both Thursday and Friday as needed.  No problem for me!

Well, I'll need another refill of decafe, Flo.  Thanks!  I'll yield the floor and go sit in the back booth for a bit and see who pops in.

Evening all. GOOD NEWS! I've really nothing to say!!!

Mainly I'm posting to move the diner up top so as to sorta move the nasty goofy threads down one. What kind of enjoyment do people get over that stuff? SighBeats me.

Since I'm here, Jeff- Up here Autozone will change a battery for you. A jump would have gotten the car there with no damage. Nuff said? Nuff said.

Vincent- I remember as a kid, driving my car around in the summer with the windows up so people would think I had ACLaugh! Now, I have to turn the AC on in my truck occasionally to make sure it still works. My how times change.

Good evening All:

Chris:  Looking around for some paint schemes for my leased locos, I came across this. Check out the box of NEW brake shoes, and the MU hoses slung over that horizontal tank. Also the blue painted not-quite-pump-not-quite hydrant things. Those large concrete "battery box" covers look like a do-able detail as well.Approve

Jeff:

True, the work they do is most impressive but at the end of the day most of it isn't what I would want on my layout.
Nailed it! Thumbs Up

Vincent: Glad your package finally got to you. Now I'm curious. It came from Edmonton - which outfit would that be? The LHS I remember had a great selection, but unless you knew EXACTLY what you wanted they treated you like dirt! Disapprove

Kris picked up the May MR for me from the library today - so we'll see what that's about later. Right now I'm in the middle of painting the next station - have the concrete and the walls done, just he roof and touch-up on the window/door frames. The brick chimney has no brick moulding, but a very slight drybrushig with a mortarish paint has made what suits me as a reasonable facsimile, See what you think when I get it put back together and its picture took. It is the weirdest and most illogical freight /passenger station I've ever come across. I can't, for instance, figure our where the passengers are meant to enter the building. Maybe they don't, just line up outside the ticket window.  Doesn't matter a whole bunch because all that side of the building, the tracks side faces away from view where I have it placed. Oh, almost forgot; I'm getting a 20 pack, maybe 2, of N Scale working street lights out of Hong Kong.  These should make a big difference to the look of several scenes.

Swayin: Your idea for a FAQ stickied thread on each Forum I think is a very good idea. The ndcc Yahoo Groups has just such an archive, and group members, especially newcomers, are encouraged to consult it, and to ask their question if they don't find an answer there, or have a follow-up question from something they've read there. Works quite well, but the structure of the  FAQs needs to be open and easy to navigate IMO.My 2 cents

Johnboy:

OK I found it . The name is "Flitz", but I can't find anyone in this city who carries it in stock.  Will check
..."a rose by any other name would smell as sweet"...the job you want to get dome is to do a final polish of the railhead after burnishing with the stainless steel. For that you need is a good quality metal polish, paste  not liquid to keep it where you want it - and I'm using Mother's Mag and Aluminum Polish - so an auto accessories shop should fit you bill.

RobbieP: Nice video! Looks like "A Passenger Train You CanModel"!LOLThumbs Up

Rob: Sorry to hear about Luigi - sad day for you both, we'll be thinking of you. We thought about getting a greyhound before we came to Nova Scotia, we'd heard t hat there is a society here that sources greyhounds from tracks in the US and sets them up in retirement with suitable owners in Nova Scotia.  Nothing came of it, but they are great dogs.

Sawyer:

being a teenager really bites sometimes
....wouldn't know, they weren't invented yet when I went through! Clown

Well folks, apart from planting up the flower beds and glazing the windows, East Sydney Annex is pretty much done. So here's the "show" , I've done done the "tell"!

Closer

And real close to the chimney I was talking about - no bricks molded in the plastic...

The passenger platform is away from view, so here's THAT.

Time for bed again, so Good night all and God Bless. Prayers of course for all in need of Healing, Comfort, Prosperity and Peace.Angel

I agree Todd.. time to move that stuff down  and time for a story or two.  I've got a few of em too!

Here's a quick one.. going over some old threads of mine.  And its true.

As a boy, we lived next to a train yard. Everyone in the neighbor hood actually lived next to the train yard. At the very best 20 houses away from it. We lived about 8 houses. Every night you could hear the sounds of trains.. or sure the Super Chief roaring on by, but also the sounds of brakes and couplings banging and clanking, the horns.. but most of all, every house in the neighborhood actually had a crack running through the ceiling, that we all believed was caused by living next to a train yard.
Funny thing.. just last month or so.. my oldest sister stayed the night with my mom. My mom still lives in the same house since my parents got married after the war.  So I get there the next morning... and my sister gets up.. and says.. "I forgot how loud it is at night here"... lol.  (I didn't)  I dont' know if you can even imagine growing up next to a train yard and the noise.. but you would have thought she would have known better.  Just imagine laying in bed at night .. you hear what sounds like the coupling and un-coupling of cars.. now if I remember right.. you'd lay there in bed.. waiting .. just waiting for it to hit.. with a loud BAnG!

Nope. It wouldn't continue running with the old battery. The first time the radiator fan cut in that was it.

Good morning all,

54F outside right now with a high of 77F this afternoon, then we will nose dive to a high of 41F with rain tomorrow.

Jeff, I bet you can do with less than a 900 CCA battery, I think my 7.3L Diesel has two 350 CCA batteries and I live where the temperature gets down to -41F in the winter.   That’s cool your family supports some of your MRR.

Swayin, Welcome to the diner……

Funny story about bashing………..  I had a guy (who will remain nameless) emailed me a laundry list of what I could do to improve the look of my layout through various scenery techniques.   He was pretty detailed on what I should do and how I should remove what I did.  I was a little ticked at first because the guy came off as a know it all and very arrogant in his email.  I shot him back an email and asked who made him such an expert in MRRing…….

Ok so it turned out to be one of the guys that have written articles in a popular MRR magazine, his full time job he publishes his own DVD series on how to weather and build trees and stuff and he is away from home most of the year as a guest speaker for several conventions around the country.  He did apologize for coming off as arrogant, but the 5 page email he sent me was typed on his phone in the airport lobby, I guess you got to give the guy some credit for trying to help out.  I felt like a complete jerk afterwards……  I got a DVD from him about two weeks later with how to pictures.

Rob, Condolences on the passing of Luigi.  I know how hard it is to lose a long time family member….

“they can go fly a milk bottle!” I love it; I may need to borrow that line!!!!!!!

John, nice detail on the chimney. How do you N-visible guys keep from going blind with details like that????

Re: Live Far From a Railroad?

When I was in elementary school I lived in a triangle: NYC (PC) Airline yard, had to cross 13 tracks to get to the bowling alley to my south, one block to the west was the Detroit – Toledo Short line tracks (DT&I went down these tracks often to get to the Anderson’s), at Swan creek the NKP crossed the NYC and the Toledo Terminal RR ran about half a mile from my house.  The Ann Arbor RR had tracks about .25 miles from us and the C&O ran just north of the house.  Now you understand why I had a confusing child hood…….

No can do. I tried to get by on a 600 amp batytery and it burned the battery up in three months.

Good morning. It's 60 and partly cloudy. The high will be 81 and it will be mostly cloudy.

I'll just be taking it easy today. I pushed myself too much yesterday and I'm stiff all over today.  I'll likely be doing some weathering work on some tank cars.

 Good Afternoon Everyone!

No, it is not a good day today - I just heard in the news, that another 4 of our boys got killed in Afghanistan, raising the toll to 7 within one week. Our government does not call it a war, because participating in a war is illegal in Germany. Our boys are ill-equipped and ill-prepared for such a job - they get their training in action!

... and Rommel is not around anymore!

My Angel AngelAngel go the the families and friends of the killed soldiers.

Rob - I am sorry for the loss of your little guy!

Robby - hope you get better soon!

Not many thoughts on MRRing lately - no, it is not the season, it is the fact, that I still don´t see the light at the end of the tunnel. My job applications don´t even get answered in most cases. I spend hours each day on job hunting, with only meager results. I start to feel wasted.

No, not a good day ...

Good morning....stack of pancakes with THAT imitation butter stuff and a bucket of maple flavored corn syrup please 'n thank-you...oh, and with a bucket of coffee.

So........everybody's favorite TROLL was on the loose last night. Sheesh! The way some loons get their kicks...Confused

ROB: Rerun and I send our deepest condolences to you over Luigi.Angel

JOHN: Neat pic...looks like you'll have a plethora of itty-bitty things to create/build for your engine terminal. Are you to the point where you're sorry you asked yet??? Smile,Wink, & Grin

ULRICH: Sorry to hear about the German troops. Please know, there are still some of us over here who appreciate our allies! You mentioned "The Desert Fox." Kinda makes a guy wonder how things would go if Rommel, Patton, MacArthur, etc.were available to deal with al quida and the taliban. I'm thinking of several additional comments, but the soap box has started out of its corner...so will stop here.

Sir Madog
My job applications don´t even get answered in most cases. I spend hours each day on job hunting, with only meager results. I start to feel wasted.

Been there/done THAT! It is easy to say "keep the faith," but something always comes up, usually later than sooner. We (Loving Wife and I) keep getting hit with little "surprises" to where I'll sit with my head in my hands and ask "it just never stops...does it?" She keeps saying "better days are coming." I'll bet Petra says THAT to you too. You and I need to start listening to these lovely creatures who somehow manage to put up with us...

Time for me to get to doing w**k stuff. Gotta slam-out some track results, a feature on 6th graders and their "international fair," then tackle a bunch of legislators flappin' their jaws but saying nothing... This evening, I meet with American Legion Auxilliary, Post 1976, for an article about them and the Auxiliary's 60th or 90th (one of the two) years of service.Thumbs Up

Here's hoping for a good, SAFE, troll-free day...

Mornin' everyone!

Zoe, a bowl of hot oatmeal with brown sugar sounds good this morning to go along with the dark roast coffee.  I'll be sitting in the front booth watching the activity outside.

Supposed to be a nice day here in the Finger Lakes.  Currently 58°F with a high around 68°F later this afternoon.  I'll be finishing up some yard w*rk and then heading over to my son's place to watch the girls again.  I'll need to stop in at the Allergist's office to get my shots sometime today, and then tonight I am off to the RR Hysterical Historical Society meeting in Rochester.  Tonight's program is on the Buffalo Creek Railroad.

Jeffrey, glad to see the battery has you back up and running.  Good to have a means of mobility!

Chris, looks like you have just another usual day at the office ahead of you.....Whistling

Ulrich, hang in there, friend!  Something will come your way, I'm hoping and praying it is soon!

Good morning.

Spent too much time on the other thread.

Jeff- Oh. Odd the car wouldn't run off the alternator once it's jumped. Even with the fan. Especially one THAT big. Alternator weak? Oh well, one thing I have learned, there is no sure thing when it comes to vehicles.

Speaking of no sure things. Ever had all 8 spark plugs quit at once? Couple years ago a farmers grain truck wouldn't start. 1976 International. Ran fine when he moved it 2 weeks prior. Actually I moved it. He just tuned it up too prior to me moving it. Got there new cap, rotor, clean plugs, no spark from any. Just an occasional random cough. Coil wasn't firing. New coil. Still no fire. Took the coil wire off and did the old fashion way SNAP!!! Hm. Plugged it back in. Nothing. Checked the rotor and the cap all good pulled a plug then all eight, no spark. This time I took a wire off the plug and held it to ground SNAP!! Hm. New plugs, ran like a top. "Thought you tuned it up" I said. "I did", he said. "But all the plugs were bad. Weird." "Don't understand that. You sure? I just cleaned ‘em" he said. "Usually that's all they need. Clean and re gap. All I've ever done. Never had trouble before."  Shock

But still, all eight at once?

Have a Great Day!!!

Chris, Ray - without your and all other "Diners´ " support, I would not be able to bear the situation. Of course, Petra is a HUGE help, too.

I am out of a job now for over a year and each day reduces the chances to find one. I have long given up looking for a job that suits my level of qualification, but being "over-qualified" does not help the situation either.  To make things worse, my old Benz is in the need of a major repair job to the tune of $ 2,000 - money I don´t have and I would never spend on a car that old. Without a car, life will be getting VERY difficult.

Sorry, guys, for being in such a downward mode today. I have lost just one hope too many in recent days.

The alternator runs it fine as long as it's above idle speed. In traffic where it's stopped or near stopped it doesn't put out enough to keep it going with a dead or near dead battery. Above idle it whips out 155 amps but below that almost nothing. It's nothing wrong with the alternator, just the way the charging system is set up. At that low a speed there's still a big demand for power. Radiator fan, fuel pump, multiple relays, etc. And yes, I have had a whole set of spark plugs go bad at once. The first time I had my nephew change them out. I told him the gap had to be set at 70 thousandths. He didn't listen and set the gap at 50 thousandths. Naturally it burned the tips off the plugs. That 20 thousandths of an inch makes a world of difference.

Jeff.. ,lol... I put in a new battery Ford Aerostar last year.. my friend swore up and down.. that is was the alternator.   He said... it will quit in 9 months.. again~.. and you will still have to replace the alternator.  I hate to admit it.. but I think he was right ... 11 months later. Now to replace one... yikes.. is this gonna be easy?  Will I have to 'polarize' something?  I even hate to lift the hood of the van.. its that depressing for me.. if you know what I mean.  Anyone?  lol.

Changing the alternator on my car takes about 20 minutes. Slip the belt off, pull a couple of plugs, take out two bolts and lift the old one out and put the new one in. Put the bolts back in and reattach the plugs an d[ut the belt back on. I carry a spare alternator in the trunk in case I should need it. The one on the car now has a lifetime warranty and the spare came with a 1 year warranty (long expired). I have it tested periodically to make sure it's still good.

  SHORTING SWITCHES

Now in the interest of learning.. and sparking other ideas.. only for the educational purposes am I posting this pic.  I in no means am interested in putting in plugs for someone.. but only to add to the enlightenment of the hobby. ( I also have written permission to use his photo)(if anyone needs it)  Yeah~  Shorting Switches.. "So thats what its called..." lol.  As a newbie.. maybe a list of easy terms and definitions.. with pics would help.  But when a newbie reads something.. and doesnt' have a pic.. well count on an extra thousand words.
