Took the plunge ...
Posted by Swayin on Tuesday, March 30, 2010 6:57 PM

 ... bought my first sound-chipped loco, a Milwaukee Road H10-44 from P2K.

I'm drooling at the thought of hearing it run ... but am already putting on the body armor for when the bill comes!  :)

don't forget to find what function key mutes the sound

Just my 2 cents worth, I spent the rest on trains. If you choked a Smurf what color would he turn?

I'm sure you'll like it. Will go good with the new Zephyr.

Swayin,

Congratulations! SmileThumbs Up  That will be a quality locomotive for you.  I have a Proto 2000 0-8-0 switcher (no sound) and it crawls quiet nicely.  And you'll enjoy running that with your new Zephyr.

Congratulation, Swayin, on the purchase of your first sound loco! You will find that sound does make a difference - it adds a new dimension to model railroading. My operation habit changed quite a lot with my first sound loco. I enjoy switching operation much more - the clank of the coupler release, the revving up of the engine when the loco begins to move. It has also influenced my layout design - less track, more switching operation.

Concrats on the sound!..you'll love it so much that all your locos will have it eventually. I went from my first sound loco to 5 sound units in the last two years.  Be sure you read the information provided with the sound, some function keys are different for each sound equipment to start up and shut down a locomotive. (For example: My proto E8 must be started by pressing F6 then F9. My Atlas MP15AC has to have F6 then F9 pressed before it will start, My Bli SD45-2 only has to have F9 pushed to start, and so on) Also, go thru the CV's list that comes with the manufacturer's paperwork after the programming is complete. That way you can adjust the volume, change ring and horn sounds, and basically "fine tune" the sound decoder.  It's easy to do. Basically, in programming on the main mode, dial in the specific CV number, enter a new value and give it a try. If it's not to your liking, repeat the step and enter a different value....chuck

Swayin,

Have one in NKP, it runs perfectly and sounds great. Keep in mind the packaging for sound is a bit tight so sound may not have "blast" capability. I have a hearing problem and the sound output is fine for me.

Enjoy!
