When in doubt. grab a hammer.

If it moves and isn't supposed to, get a hammer

If it doesn't move and is supposed to, get a hammer

If it's broken, get a hammer

If it can't be fixed with a hammer... DUCK TAPE!

I think the greatest Train Movies were Under Seige 2 and the Emperor of the North.

Actually,The Duke'd be a little perturbed about the email going around with him saying"Why The Hell Should I Have Ta Press One For English"!!

Turns out all three of his wives were Latinas:His first two-Josephine and Esparanza-were Mexican and his third wife-Pilar-was Peruvian.

John Wayne spoke Spanish very well and was an authority about Tequila!!

Oh Yes!!How could we forget"Stand By Me"??
The only thing I didn't like was the Extended Vision Caboose on the freight train!!

I'm not sure when EVC's were introduced but I don't think they were in use in 1959!!

Okay.As far as European Trains in Spaghetti Westerns go,don't forget Clint Eastwood's"Man With No Name"trilogy"Fist Full of Dollars";"For a Few Dollars More"and"The Good,The Bad and The Ugly" and Charles Bronson's'Far East Meets Old West'saga"Red Sun".

Clint Eastwood's 1984 Psychological Thriller"Tightrope"has a climactic scene with Clint and the killer fighting in a New Orleans Freightyard as a New Orleans Public Belt freight rumbles past.

1967's"Hour Of The Gun"with James Garner as Wyatt Earp and Jason Robards as Doc Holliday has some NdeM equipment standing in for the Southern Pacific.

Besides 1973's"The Train Robbers",trains figured promininently in at least three of The Duke's Westerns:
1963's"McClintock"has a few scenes involving trains including a scene of Stephanie Powers and Jerry Van *** arriving in town;1971's"Big Jake"an Ndem 10 Wheeler stands in for the mythical"Texas and Southwestern"or something like that ; 1965's"Sons of Katie Elder has a scene at the beginning of a D&RGW Narrow Gauge train and an NdeM steam train arriving at the station and 1969's"True Grit"has a scene of a caboose and Kim Darby arriving at the Fort Smith Depot.

And no,I haven't forgotten John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara in John Ford's"The Quiet Man"either!!
Great scenes involving the Irish Railways.

Trains play a part in two Denzel Washington Movies:1996's"Courage Under Fire".Scene where Lou Diamond Phillips deliberately drives his Mustang into an oncoming train*(*It was filmed around Austin, but I don't remember if they filmed on the Austin Northwestern or Gulf Colorado and San Saba)and 2000's"The Bone Collector"has some scenes of a P42 powered passenger train in the underground trackage leading into Penn Station.

1955's"Battle Cry"has a scene at the end where a wounded Tab Hunter arrives back home in Baltimore in a PRR Train powered by a GG1.

Hi rails, I wanted to say MEA CULPA on info I gave about a John Wayne movie . Another rail corrected me and is spot on. The movie is titled " The Hurricane Express " not The Wrecker as I stated  (which IS the dastardly character breaking our hearts throughout the flick [ God, I hate seeing trains smash up ] ). I found it in the library once but it may be hard to find. It's very old, black and white, and could be John Wayne's first film .( OK OK rivet counters ,so it's not ! So sue me !! )

Netflix has it.

Unless I missed it, I can't believe no one mentioned "The Train" with Burt Lancaster.

Marlon:

Again, it is hard to find. I stumbled across "THE WRECKER" in the library.. Someone is causing wrecks on the railroad for revenge.. It's real old black and white 1930s ish  USA western steam with model Ts ,too...

It's easier to find when you go by the title "Hurricane Express".

The Wrecker is also a book written by Clive Cussler.  It's a good read along with The Chase.

Animated Trains on TV and in the Movies have progressed beyond the typical balloon stacked 8/10 wheeler steam locomotive:
The Polar Express. They studied the only surviving Pere Marquette 2-8-4 from pilot to tender and copied her right down to the rivets!!

Bolt.A CSX Freight being pulled by a pair of AC4400's.

The Simpsons. On one episode of Fox's long running animated sitcom,Homer and Bart go out out to what Homer thinks is an abandoned line andstart pulling up ties when a they hear the sound of a train horn.

The next scene shows a passenger train pulled by an AB set of Santa F Units jump the tracks;do a complete circle in mid air then land'wheels down'on the tracks unharmed!!!

NORTH BY NORTHWEST is one my favorites; I love the NYC shots, and it has a lot of "through the window" views of the Lakes and trackside scenery. RUNAWAY TRAIN is one of those surprisingly good movies where it initially appears as a cheap action flick, but the depth of the drama sucks you into the characters. Plus, it has some great shots of some old power!

Yes , someone said "Taking of Pelham 123 "   I grew up in New yawk. Trust me, the original version with Walter Mathau, Robert Shaw (JAWS), Jerry Stiller  ( Seinfeld ) and Eli Wallech is THE ONE and ONLY one. There are now 3 ( TV/ with Vincent DiOnofrio from Law & Order. OK ), but Mathau is the one !!!  IT truely captures  the theme and beat of the city in the 1960s. I believe the score is Quincy Jones/ fast,up temp jazz..I rode the Pelham line many a time as a teen in Manhattan . Took the IND ( Independant line) from Hillside Ave, Jamaica,Queens to Lex Ave./ Manhattan with my dad  where we eventually moved To in 1963  . Sometimes LIRR to/from New Hyde Park.  I emphasize all this because the Mathau one even grips someone like me... It reeks NYC,  the way it felt in  the1960s......  Fugeddaboudit !!!

What about Von Ryans Express with Frank Sinatra.

Also trains played a big part in all the Bourne movies where the action was in Europe.

Hey!!I thought they took the SP to Lake Shasta-aka-Vermont!!!

IMDb to the rescue!  It was indeed both SP and AT&SF.  They had continuity problems as well as geographical, so 2 great trains for the price of one admission.

Remember Liz Taylor in BUTTERFIELD 8, with a trip to the Hamptons on a train pulled by a New Haven EP-5 (with views of the Hudson River out the window)?

This has come alot in similar posts but Ill say it: Back to the Future III. A really good train part. Also, Shanghi Noon had a really good train theme to it.

Oh Yeah!!I forgot about"Tough Guys"!!
Also Chuck Norris's "Lone Wolf McQuade"in which he plays a Kung Fu Texas Ranger has some scenes of SP Tunnel Motors doing some switching at Fort Bliss.

Recently,Union Pacific had some trouble when a AC4400 powered Container broke down between Fort Worth and ElPaso.

They called Chuck Norris. He immediately Roundhouse Kicked the AC4400's motor and got it moving again!!!

Maybe not everyone's cup of tea, but I saw a good one last night on TCM with Jane Fonda called "Julia" that had a lot of early WW2 era passenger train action going across Germany to Moscow. it involves a courier smuggling documents across Europe and the border crossings. John

Whistling

And don't forget "LEATHERHEADS"  with George Clooney and Rene Zellwager.  Its a FOOTBALL story that your wives would like to watch with you.  You can't loose on this one. Some really great train shots "IC" if my mind serves me correctly.

And who could forget "White Christmas" 1954! Wherein our cast of singing heroes take the Santa Fe from Florida to Vermont ^.^

Don't forget that they start on a train with SP black widow F units.

Danger Lights has some incredible train shots.  The steam locomotive tug of war, the engineer stuff oily rags in the hot box with the train at speed, lots more.

Ditto on the response about the 'CB&Q' loco in the Natural.  It ran for years on a Cleveland area tourist line.

A League of Their Own has some nice shots of the CB&Q E5 withthe only problem being the overhead wire in the shot with the IL Railway Museum uses for their trolley cars.
