P2K E unit parts swapping
Posted by emdgp92 on Monday, January 4, 2010 11:27 AM

I'm building a pair of Penn Central E units, an E7 and E8. Problem is, that the E7 came with a rather nice Mars-style headlight in the nose door. Only two PC E units (both ex-PRR E8s) came with twin headlights. Shifting the door from the E7 to E8 was actually pretty easy. But, with that done...the E8 body shell doesn't fit the E7 chassis. Seems that the weights don't fit. How easy is it to swap weights between the units? If I can't do that, can I move the circuitry to the E8 chassis?

Still working on the E's over here. Getting the weights swapped over wasn't all that bad. However, it did take awhile to get the units apart. But, they're all back together now, and they run great. One thing I've been meaning to ask, is that because of the Mars light (which is now in the E8), the lower headlight and numberboards flicker. Looking at the setup carefully, I see that there are two bulbs--the upper Mars light, and the 'normal' headlight. Is there some way I can isolate the upper light from the numberboards?

I painted the top surfaces of the clear plastic lens - under the Mars light - with black paint.   I also painted the back half of the Mars light bulb itself.
