John Muir's ATSF depot
Posted by markpierce on Monday, December 21, 2009 6:20 PM

Conservationist John Muir passed away 95 years ago on Christmas eve....

Between the east end of Alhambra Valley viaduct (pictured several times before on this forum) and a tunnel under Highway 4 in Martinez, CA there was a station named "Muir" a few hundred feet from Muir's residence.  This photo shows a large crowd meeting an eastbound passenger train.  The bulk of the train must still be on the bridge.  The spur to the left of the main track was principally used to load fruit.  Unfortunately, the depot burned down in 1941, never to be replaced.  All that remains is a baren spot along the still-existing main track and a street (unseen but behind the station and platform) named "Muir Station Road."
