BLI wrong on Cab-Forward history?
Posted by Anonymous on Thursday, May 27, 2004 6:10 PM
Hello "History modelers".
BLI give some history information with there HO model of Cab-Forward.
They have the reference from Robert J Church book "Cab-Forward" and say`s that all AC-4 and AC-5 were scrapped by 1949...

...but in the book "Southern Pacific Review" 1952-82 by Joseph A Strapac, he give the information "But there are 195 Baldwin cab-aheads, built between 1928 and 1944..."and "All of them were extensively shopped once the pressures of the World war II were over, and all remain in service in the summer of 1952 ...".

"My" Locomotives number 4120, a AC-5, he say`s is assigned to the Western Division in 1952!

Do anyone know for shure... When did the last AC-5 been taken from traffic duties and when did it been scrapped?

Thanks for all help on this.

Tommy,

BLI ARE WRONG!

SP "vacated" (withdrew fom service) its AC-4/5/6 locomotives between 1953 and 1955, with the last (AC-6) in service being 4149 which lasted until 16 December 1955. Your locomotive 4120 was at Roseville until 10 June 1954. It was, however fitted with new larger cab front windows as used on AC-8 and later locomotives on 31 October 1951, so you may wi***o set the time period for your layout before then! The last AC-5, 4113, was taken out of service in April 1955 in Sacramento.

This data is in "SP Steam locomotive Compendium" by Diebert & Strapac.
