2 Subjects; Micro Sol vs MicroSet and Newer Bachmann 44 Tonner.
Posted by hcc25rl on Monday, November 30, 2009 9:28 PM

Greetings one and all - I was wondering what the difference(s) between Micro Sol and Micro Set are, and how should they be used; In concert with one another or as separate entities?? I'm going to be doing some decaling soon on some structures and I want to "get it right" the first time!

Also, has anyone had experience with the (newer) Bachmann 44 Tonner, HO scale?? I had one of the original versions years ago, and after a lot of use the motor burned out. *** me off as they aren't cheap, however, they fit my medium sized switching layout quite well so I may invest in another one if I read good things about them from my peers here on these forums.

Thanks, and regards, Jimmy

I've found Micro Set helps the decal adhere and does a little to soften it to fit over rivets and ribs, while Micro Sol is a more potent softener. You can still move the decal around after you've hit it with micro set, but do not touch the decal after you've brushed on micro sol. Even a soft brush will probably cause the decal to rip and tear.

On this locomotive Microsol was used so that the decals would hug to the locomotive in uneven spots such as on the louvers or on the hinges for the access doors.

This should be two separate threads.

I have the single motor 44 ton with a LokSound Micro and 16mm X 25mm speaker running very well.

I picked my DCC ready one of off ebay for about $20.00 about a year ago. From what I can see now, the single motor comes DCC on board with a decoder that can run on DC and DCC.

The double motor were not DCC ready. I just put a DZ125 decoder in a double motor but the motors are an issue. One motor in mine acts up. One of the brushes seems to hang up at times. I am going to return it original condition and send it into Bachmann where they will replace a defective one for $10.00. Standard procedure.

I just picked up a single motor 70 ton with DCC on board of off ebay for about $19.00. Very nice running loco.

The directions are on the back of every Microscale decal package.   It would be good to pick up any old set at a swap meet for $0.25 just to have the directions on hand.

The two fluids are different and have different purposes.  Micro Set is a wetting agent and prepares the surface for the decal. It helps to eliminate tiny bubbles that can float a decal off the surface.  The decal is removed from its background in distilled water and placed where it is supposed to be on the model.  After it is positioned exactly, then Micro Sol is applied.  Micro Sol softens the decal and helps the decal conform and adhere to the surface. Do not touch the decal after Micro Sol is applied.  The crinkling will go away as it dries.
