Layout progress
Posted by dinwitty on Monday, November 16, 2009 10:40 PM

I needed a serious yard to store cars and engines while I work on other parts of the layout,  I decided to make Milwaukee and that includes the North Shore Milwaukee terminal. I internetted around looking for Milwaukee maps and found a site with some maps and good old time pics, then found the Yahoo Milwaukee group, and they had a good track map of the Milwaukee road, and I learned the Milwaukee Road station was practically neighbors to the North Shore station.

Here we go, first the real pic, the foreground is the North Shore looking down the track lead to the lower storage yard, the track going left is the lower merchandise express. Way back is the Milwaukee road passenger train shed.

this pic is my layout work in progress pic. Background is the train shed, foreground is the North Shore depot. This is just about the scene as it will exist on my layout.

looks so close.

But the difference is the Milw main runs to the left, the North Shore will be raised and will have a long bridgework over in front of the train shed  kinda blocking the view, I'll work it to minimize that but is required to make the layout work. Meh, pretend a bit.
I'm really working to capture the flavor, many layout scenes are going to be close accurate and then it goes off beat for layout reasons and operations. I wasn't aware of the Milwaukee freight terminal yards before and I will try to design in some kind of workings for that now. The maps helped.

yeh, Milwakee road was short of power and equipment so there's Rock Island and C&NW... 8-P
Now I have to buy some Milwaukee road equipment.

BTW, NS depot and Milwaukee station aaaaall gone today, NS abandoned 1963, Milw Station demolished 1965, built what about 1901 was it? North Shore depot built about 1920.

Nice job, I like how you still altered the prototype to your needs.

I bought the Walthers Milwaukee depot thinking I could mod it into the Chicago IC depot, but after looking over more details its lots more modding. Now I can actually use the kit as is, but I can't put the whole structure in, so its more a backdrop facade mod.
