The Craftsman Structure Show 2009

Morning everyone.  I am sitting at the airport getting ready to fly home from the 2009 edition of the Craftsman Structure Show and thought that I would share some of the photos that I took this week.  If you are not familiar with it http://www.craftsmanstructureshow.com/ it is an excellent place to go if you want to get a good primer in structure building.  With a couple of hundred modellers from all over the US and beyond, you get the opportunity to run shoulders with some of the best known names in the hobby.  I was one of 20 in the room, having a hands on clinic on water techniques from Dave Frary for example.  In some respects the title "craftsman structure" is a bit misleading.  Yes, certainly many of the big name high end kit manufacturers are in attendance, but so are many others that make much lower cost simpler kits.  The techniques presented in clinics, such as weathering, detailing and scenery are applicable to almost any layout.  Anyway, I hope you enjoy my photos of what has been a really fun and educational week.

 So Simon, did you pick up in kits?

Actually Ken very little.  I got the limited edition show kit, and a couple of real simple basic laser kits for the boys to have a go at.  It time that they started to learn some basic structure building techniques.  Apart from that I picked up some really nice HO scale machine tool detail castings to use when I start to build my roundhouse and workshop complex.

Thanks Simon for posting the photos. I saw a few of my own work :)! I'm always surprised at the number of folks who come that are just getting into structure building. Of course, the lure of attending clinics taught by names like Frary, Koester, Tylick, Nolan, Revelia, Sassi and many others, just to name a few, draws in many. Thanks again, Simon! Scott

 Thanks Steve, yes at the awards banquet at the show they mentioned that there was going to be another in 2010.  I expect that it will be a similar time, so one of the first weeks in November.  Since the show is held at a hotel really close to Foxboro, they try to arrange it so that it does not clash with a Patriots home game.  I don't see anything about the 2010 edition on the web site yet (link in my first post) but I am sure it won't be too long before the plans start to be revealed.

Thanks for posting the pics from the craftsman show.  Beautiful work!  I love the burned down building.

And you answered my question about where it was held.  I take it that's it's just a Saturday/Sunday show?

Tom, actually no.  I attended so called Premium workshops on Wednesday.  These were clinics of just 20 modellers covering specific subjects such as roof treatments, walls and stonework, rock carving, water and detail painting.  Then on Thursday to Saturday there were a series of presentations in a larger auditorium.  Sunday was for layout tours, which I sadly could not attend.  There was a vendor show  and contest room running the latter 3 days of the event.

Wow.  That sounds like a fascinating experience, Simon.  Did you glean a lot of good tips and ideas from the modeling "mensas"?

 I did indeed.  When I got home on Sunday afternoon, my 10 year old was all excited as he has to make an Indian diorama showing a plains Indian camp.  So my new found rock carving and water techniques were immediately used as I taught Christopher what to do to make his diorama.

I just looked at the link Scotty posted for the 2010 edition and if you don't blink, I am in the video sitting in one of the premium clinics run by Doug Foscale learning the rock carving technique.
