Weekend Photo Fun 10/23-10/26

Looks like nobody's started the latest WPF yet, so I'll go ahead.

I began repainting my locos for my new freelanced line, the Aiken Northern RR. The scheme is based off of my old SEC Rwy. scheme; jsut replace the grey w/ red and the yellow w/ white, and make the lines straighter.

I'm using model master insignia red and flat white thinned with testor's thinner. The paint worked rather well, pretty much used up the red to paint both locos though. I'll probably add the white stripe monday, as I'll be out of town from this afternoon to some time monday. Lettering will be numbers on the body above the stripe and MAYBE the letters ANRR on the front nose below the stripe.

Now for the loco pics:

ANRR power as of now:

Also, weathered this hopper:

Enjoy, I'm looking forward to one heck of a WPF!

 Looks great Driline!

Unfortunately, my own foresting attempts will be put off until next year (hopefully I can get my mother to grow some sedum in her garden next year)

Yes sir Terry, I am. I love this hobby! That scene is looking real nice as well!

A few boxcars that I have finished!

An Athearn 86' High Cube, painted Magenta and decaled with Herald King Decals.  Removed the Swing Coupler and installed a Walthers Extended Coupler box with a long shank Kadee Coupler to aid in going around 24" radius curves.

An Athearn box car with Front Range Plug Doors from out of my scrap box.  This should be a Pullman Standard car with Different Plug doors, but this will have to do for a standin.  While researching EL RBL's I found that the EL cars were painted General Mills Big Sky Blue paint since General Mills funded the EL cars and I wondered if this was the case with the DT&I cars since they are painted Big Sky Blue and were in General Mills cereal service at Toledo, Ohio. Herald King decals.

An Athearn RBL used in Campbell Soup service at Napoleon, Ohio.  Stock car with Herald King decals.

Packers#1,

A bit of advice on your paint job.  In general you want to airbrush from light to dark.  It is always harder to cover a dark color with a lighter color.  That's what is happening with the grey/yellow paint job.  You end up having to apply multiple coats of the light color to get it to look right.  In the process it either ends up running or is too thick and obscures the details.  On your red engines you should have paint it white first, masked the strip and then painted the red.  You'll going to have troubles getting a good solid white over the red.

I know I am, but couldn't find masking tape thin enough to do the job. Found some spots on them that needed some touch up anyways. I'll probably end up someday repainting them with polly scale paint, which is a HECK of a lot easier to set up, use, and clean up.

I am going to make my first photo post to WPF. Every WPF, I will release another photo album of my cross country trip on my website, http://www.kreepykritters4kids.com/Johns_Model_Railroad/Welcome.html . This week, it is a tiny train "museum" in Mo, a few steps from Mark Twain's house.

Here is what I have been working on the last couple of weeks.  First we have a couple atlas rs-1 engines.  I waited over 2 years to paint trying to figure out what the colors will be.  One has seperatly applied grabs and lift rings.  I also added an antenna, and rotating beacon light.

I also finished my rs conversion to a snow plow

Worked on these roundhouse pax cars.  Thinking of trimming the windows in creme or white.  What do you think would be good?

Also bought this roundhouse last year at the medina train show.  It was rather large as you can see in the first pic.  I an shortning the length as you can se in the second pic and will finish the floor of the interior and run track in it.

Also help a friend with his benchwork.  I am also working on a pair of athearn blue box sw-7 switchers.  I hard wired the truck feeds and added decoders.  I also put in led lights both front and rear.  I put sunshades, antennas and spark arrestors on them. All I need to do now is paint them.

rs2mike, I like your snow plow and roundhouse, however, the white railing on the passenger cars looks like it is cheap plastic, try a different color.

Thanks Packers.  I sprayed the gray first then sprayed the green.  Tape will always fit.  I use blue masking tape and tape it to a piece of glass.  I lay the model next to it to get a length and then cut to fit.  For your white stripe(which by the way I think a white nose and face on the doors might look better because it is awfully hard to get a straight line.)  You can always measure the width of the tape you need, and cut it with a straight edge and knife.  Or.... you could stop by the rc hobby shop and pick up some of their pinstripe tape.  I got some for my airplane and one roll has various width size of tape that would work to lay down then spray your red over top.  When dry peel off and you have a nice crisp even line.

Still working on the old Roundhouse 0-6-0T kit off and on.  I drilled a hole the length of the boiler weight to run wires to an LED headlight, replaced the original cast-on generator and bell with some brass Cal-Scale castings that I had bought many years ago.  I didn't have a new whistle casting so I "whittled" away the cast-on plastic one to look a bit "daintier".  I also drilled and filed out the solid plastic around the rear steps for a better appearance.  I found a package of Walthers handrail posts in the old parts bag and mounted railings. Can't find them on Walthers site, guess they don't have them anymore.  Just about ready to power up the mechanism as soon as I get my test set-up ready (rollers, volt/amp meters and power source.)

I shoulda checked my LHS, they've got airplanes as well and probably have some of that tape, which is what I need. oh well, lesson learned. I did manage to apply the tape to the units before leaving for greenville today; in fact, probably would have had time to spray the white, looking back.

Finally, I am nearing the end on some projects. This week I completed 2 vehicles, both HO scale.

I finished adding figures to my Classic Metal Works Greyhound bus

Excellent work everyone, once again! Unfortunately, a busy weekend will keep me away from my model railroad, but here's a few shots I got on Thursday when I went to get my entries for the Trains Mag photo contest:

Neither of those are my official entries, but I thought I'd give you guys a preview of what they actually are.
Bonus points if you can guess how they fit the theme "Bridging the Gap." Yes, I make it extremely obvious, but I don't want to make the judges have to guess Smile,Wink, & Grin
