Meanwhile, back at the work bench...

Traffic levels have been good on the Western Maryland, so much so that we've had to press our newest chopnose geep into service before she's had a chance to hit the paint shop.

Hopefully some good weather on Sunday afternoon will give her time to get into full red white and black regalia...

I'll slip in the last pics of the weekend then, unless someone beats me to it. Wired up some feeders today, connected one pair to the power pack, and the train ran all the way around the layout!

Cant say it been a great weekend. Good news is gravity is working just fine here in Maryville IL. Seems anything I picked up fell down or off the rails!

Started to get the A Line ready to hook up to K-10 mine. That meant taking out the last 18 radii turns! Installed 22 inch and half way through the turn installed a Atlas number 6. Used the straight section to the mine. Used a 2X4 as a guard till the rest of the bench is done.

To install the bigger Radii and turnout I had to pull the 13 foot tunnel / hill. This section has been there for 2 plus years now. It is against the garage door and does not see the light of day often. I will add I lay this section of rail about 3 years ago. Sure is not pretty but tracks well.

Found this under the hill, from long ago.

Far as the green out door carpet, people that follow my posting for what ever reason know the bench started as a HO slot car track.

My track laying is getting better, I did this section 2 years ago. Shows the A and B line.

Something I have never posted before, a over view of the bench. Should be called the Good, the Bad and Mainly Ugly! Had the door up to work on the A line turnout.

All so installed decoder's in PK 1000 Erie's, A is running like a champ, B is having power pick up problems.

Hoped to have gotten more done, but I have felt like Caboose today. Getting old sucks!

Few good pictures of the new section.

Where abouts on the island is it.  I love taking pictures of these old buildings and different parts of our history?

If you're referring to my posts, it is near Alberni.  See the following website.

I finally got around to patching and lettering a pair of Proto 2000 gondolas. Used to be Erie Lackawana, now they're WSOR.

[img.]Photobucket[/img.] As the railroads replace the older steel coal gons with lighter aluminum cars, more and more have been converted to scrap hauling. These David J. Joseph cars are seen all over the country. This is an MDC kit that I bought last year at a hobby shop for the price marked on the box, $7.98. The decals are from Oddballs Decals. Between the price of the decals, the paint, the Kadee couplers modified to lower shelf and new trucks, I have more sunk in the details than in the car itself. John Timm

Thanks very much indeed Bob. I just followed the instructions and the plans in the kit exactly, anybody can duplicate this quite easily, with some time and patience.

http://www.sierrawestscalemodels.com/oscale/302/302.shtml

The kit is also available in HO, Simon (simon1966) built it a few months ago but I dont know if he posted it here on this forum.

Made myself a test track out of a 1x6 and the track from the old layout (meaning the switches are snap switches, but my big 6-axles will make it through them). Im using it to speed match my locos (QSI decoders are kind of a pain since they have no CV 6, have yet to try my genesis F45 with it's MRC decoder) and check couplerheight.

Also got 2 new cars. Both are athearn kits that have had the trucks reamed, intermountain metal wheelsets and kadees added, and weighted up to 4.5 ounces. I've never used intermountain wheelsets before (most of mine are branchline or proto) and they roll insanely well in the reamed trucks

Bordem shot:

Also got a wash in on this bulkhead flat, in addition to it's pipeload.

Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....

2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.

Once again we gathered around the soft glow of a bunch of little LED's, and enjoyed the peaceful whir of 5-pole motors doing what they were meant to do.

When suddenly, the silence was shattered!

First, by Phil Hoffman's ancient Atlas/Roco GP-30, which sounded like a blender, but amused us with its staying power after over 30 years of service!

Then, after all the usual freight was handled (including two locals expertly delivered by Bryan) an unscheduled excursion burst upon the scene, complete with a sound equipped Walther's N&W Mallet, thanks to Tim "Sizemore" Alder.

The Rapido B&O coaches looked great, but Tim pointed out several deficiencies that he hopes will be ironed out before the N&W version arrives.

And here we are, after a pleasant afternoon of running the Western Maryland.

I stand corrected.  So you turned the model for each exposure.  The point I was making was that it was obvious that you had not walked around a real building taking those images, so it must be a model.

I was actually complimenting your model building skill by pointing out that the identical background in every angle, and the changing light direction on the building was the only way I could tell it wasn't a real building.  No offense intended.

Thanks for the comments, you are correct Wolfgang, it is O scale.

Karl:

I was all set to call you a prankster who was putting us on until I noticed that the light was from the upper right foreground in every picture and the background was inserted digitally.

Therefore, I am impressed.  That is VERY realistic.

Everything in the pictures is real, nothing has been 'digitally inserted'. They are straight photos from the camera to the screen. The 'light' from the upper right foreground is the SUN, I havent found a way to move that yet. It is in the upper right foreground in each shot because that is where the sun was and gave the best lighting on the model.

As I said the first time my modelling validity was questioned here a couple of weeks ago   "what would I have to gain by posting a fake pic?"

That is indeed great news Crandell my  friend, One of your national treasures preserved, I'm very happy to read the news and thanks for letting me know.

Best regards,
Karl.A

Almost competed my MDC Boxcab today, installed the decoder, painted the shell, installed the roof detail and windows. I put the shell onto a Spectrum 44 ton switcher chassis. Weathering is the next step.

Karl, what an accomplishment..wow!  It is so wonderfully realistic. Big Smile

As an aside, you would be interested to learn that between the federal and provincial governments, the Kinsol Trestle (in your signature) was approved for a rebuild with a CDN$5.7M grant.  Wahoooooo...!

I did some railfanning around our club layout at Boothbay Railway Village this week.

At Dragon Cement Plant

The plant entrance and cement silos

Cement bagging plant

At the rock crusher in the quarry

Around the fishing village:

The church, general store and houses

Businesses by the main line tracks

Shoreside businesses

and in the servicing area:

F3 BAR 44 diesel fueling

the sand house and water tank

The layout is very much a work in progress; these are the most complete areas

Fantastic modeling there Karl, you could also post this in the "Show Your Weathered Models" thread. I really like the way you have blended the finish of the castings in with the rest of the model.

I have a second image of a J Class 4-8-4 from the Norfolk & Western storming up the grade rising out of Seneca Falls Sub.  It is towing a short consist of three commuter coaches, so it is hauling fast.
