Good evenin,
ULRICH: Welcome Back and Happy Birthday to ya! That strudel looks awfully darn good...hey Chloe, hack me off some of that wouldjaplease???
JEFF: Man alive, the new backdrop/scenery looks great!
ROBBY P: As usual, another inspiring piece of w**k (the Katy hopper).
LEE: I finally got a chance to look through your pics...fine fine job. The lady at the ice cream truck...well, quite inspiring. Reminds me of the amazon down the street...
JIM ( I think it was): my fellow firefighter didn't have far to go to consult with his CFO...she was inside the quilt shoppe selling raffle tickets for a quilt and homemade cookies and bread. I think the best I coulda worked out was to trade him his dozen birdhouses for the truck... I'm w**king on another Cedar Rapids firefighter, who w**ks out of the house my truck was assigned to initially back in '61. His wife doesn't seem opposed to the idea...but she did shoot down him buying a "shingle conveyor truck" not too long ago. He does roofing on his days off from the FD. Another Facebook pal is shingle guy's Captain. Maybe, just maybe, the guys will convince the others in the house to pool their bucks and buy "their" old engine. I've mentioned a time or two how cool it would be to have the '61 in a fresh coat of red paint, sitting on the ramp next to the current Engine 3. It'd make a heckuva neat photo.
Speakin' of photos, I see the latest weathered models thread (by Driline) is still going. I stopped by earlier this evening, and things locked-up trying to get to page 3. A little internet glitch, I guess. I see Robby P and others are contributing...looked civil enough as far as I got. I still wonder if we oughta start a pool as to how long it lasts.
While letting my brain recover from tape review of Saturday's townhall meeting with the local congressman (and trying to come up with a coherent article 100% neutral in it's reporting of the event), I put a few more parts on the GP-40 project I started some time ago. I'm still waiting on some back-ordered parts, and discovered I didn't order enough of another (MU stands, 2 to a pack...I need 4 total, OOPS!). Next Walthers order will probably be in another month or so...which should allow back-orders from 2 or 3 previous orders to finally hit their shelves.
How does a politician spend an hour saying so much...but saying so very little??? Rhetorical question, no rants necessary. Keep in mind, I left the event ticked-off at BOTH sides.
Tomorrow (almost "today") has me w**king on a profile piece for school board candidates, interviewing a chiropractor in Iowa City for a business feature/personality profile. He served as a Marine, and now is in the Army Reserve. His emphasis is "a vet helping vets," I think. Then, it's off to the monthly school board meeting in Tiffin, or Oxford. The school district has (again) violated the requirement to have their agenda posted 24 hours prior to the meeting. Location is only listed as "elementary library," which could be Oxford, Middle Amana, or even the new elementary in North Liberty. Will have to bug the secretary later today.
Gonna be IV coffee infusion all day/all night Thursday...
Have a good night/morning depending on where in the world you're at...

Good Morning, Folks
(just sticking my nose through the door to see who is in).
Zoe, I´ll just have some decaffe in my ARR mug. Will you express my thanks to the guys for all the thoughts and wishes? And please tell them, that what ever they are having here - it´s on me, ´cause it is my birthday today. Also brought along some strudel - in place of a birthday cake.
Well, I have to be off again, need to go to the social security people...
Good Evening All,
Boy you fellas are a talkative group, I just can't keep up to all the posts with my time limits.
Chloe, If you would care to bring this old coot a cinnamon bun with lots of butter and a RB Float, I would sur appreciate it.
For all you CN Fans, I just thought I would tell you of what I saw today. In the CN yards here there sat an old RDC with the following up on the letterboard. "CN TEST TRACK EVALUATION CAR" In all my years living close to this yard I have never run across an RDC used for this purpose. Has anyone else seen this unit???
Great looking backdrop JEFF.
How are things on Pearl street JERRY? Did the IS run today. and did you get that Chair fixed??
My thoughts are with Ulrich across the pond, hope things start to look up there.
Well off for some ZZZZZZzzzzzssss, have to work in the morning.
Prayers and blessings to all in need.

Hey, Flo, how about a hot fudge brownie sundae, please, and a CAW mug of decaf, please? Thank you.
jeffrey-wimberly Here's a couple of test shots. What's layout and what's backdrop. Wow!
, indeed! Jeff, if the 'foreground' trees are part of the DA backgrounds, I might have to see what their Western backdrops look like! EXCELLENT choice of backdrop there!
Ray, better rest up them dogies, alrighty. Rode hard and put away wet, eh? How long do you think your toes will be in getting healed up? Good thing you retired when you did - hate to think if you had to get up and go to a regular job with hours and all, what a fuss your feets would be a'makin'.
Rob - on that Herpa water trailer that Todd found, here's a link on Walthers, which says it's TBA as for arrival time. Will cost us, though $21.50 is the currently shown price.
Saw DerJohn's (cue the ad music...) 'Handy-Dandy Tar-Trailer Tips"(patents and TM pending, no doubt...), so that might be the way to go. Leastways, I think I may try it for myself (after some internet searches for photos and details on the prototype)...Thanks, John - you da man on scratchbuilding! (And no, that does not mean you have to always sit at the RC, by the way.
Tom - Have you told your Mom's 'sweetie' that she's interested? Maybe Mark might drive over if you let him know... And wow, that is NOT friendly weather for man nor cat (not even if Uff-Dah wears his Viking helmet)! Sounds like all of us in here (and probably your whole parish) should be praying for a nice ocean breeze to move that up the mountains (unless that would melt whatever snow might be left up in those mountain passes). Hey, that first period this fall at school (unfortunately) reminded me of one semester at Univ. of Missouri - I had a chemistry class at Schlundt Hall (eastern edge of the 'red campus' buildings, followed by English Composition, 10 minutes later, in the Electrical Engineering building (far western edge of the campus). I was habitually about 5 minutes late. A bike or car wouldn't even have helped me (unless I was willing to run down some of my fellow students along the way, which was mostly sidewalks and not clear-shot streets). My condolences to your football team horn players.
And my sympathy and encouragement for our student Diners who are ramping up to speed for another school year. Keep at those good study habits that we know you have, guys! Remember, if you get those classes out of the way with good grades, you won't have to (as I did) re-take one the last semester before you graduate. (It was on my B.S. degree, and it was American History - took me several years after that before I got to actually liking and 'getting' history... )
Lee, careful there, or your Photobucket account will have a PG13 rating slapped on it. I was gonna ask you about the one woman at the ice cream truck - wasn't sure if she was really desperate for ice cream, the way she was pleading on her knees and all. You have fun with your layout's figures, too, eh?
Well, before Chloe and Flo pull out their cast iron skillets, I think I'll mosey on home. Prayers for cooler breezes, more pleasant weather, and healing of all body parts that need it.
Blessings,
Jim in Cape Girardeau
Evenin' folks!
"Tis but a scratch; I've had worse."
I managed to tear apart my old paint booth and clean up the area.... man! What a mess. I hadn't ever really cleaned the thing since I built it almost 25 years ago. Layer upon layer of paint on the inside. Dust, grime, and gunk on, in around, and..... the whole thing. I then started cleaning up the table and floor around the workshop. This part of the basement is the wettest at certain times of year, and everything I picked up had loads of black mold growing on it. Vacuumed the floor and took a pile of trash out to the little dumpster I have. Then before quiting for the night decide to tear apart a power unit that was given to me by someone who was just sure that I could use it...... I am taking off the voltmeter and milliamp meter and some switches, ect. that are in it. They may be useful, but most of it is an ancient old electronic kit used for scientific experiments back in the 1950s and 60s..... Tubes and transistors that I doubt very much still work, and even if they did would not be someting I would trust to have running anything on the layout.
Lots of interesting posts here today..... Lets see, Jeffery, the backdrop is looking very good.
Tom, I remember having those conversations with my Mother..... "What is this thing for?" "Mother that's the remote for the TV", "What does it do?" "It lets you turn it on and off and change channels" "on what?" "The TV" "It does?" Yes mom. How do you do that? OK, see where it says channel? You push the button like this and the channel goes up by one.... But I don't like that channel! Just push the button below it and it goes right back to the other channel. OK, now what does this thing do? And the conversation replays over again...... and again.......and again..... One time she was convinced that it was a cell phone, because I showed her mine and gave her the number so when I was away at camp she could call me. "You mean I can call you on this? No Mother that is the remote for the TV.... What does that do? Ah yes, been there, done that!
Guess I best call it a night, I have to be up early to get some packets of info from the FGLK before the coaches leave tomorrow morning for an excursion.......

Rob: on the tar trailer, don't forget the price quoted was in Euros, so double it for $s, give or take. Scratch building looks a bit more realistic, non?
A start point might be plastic water pipe like this that's 1/2 inch nominal inside diameter. The outside diameter is just about 4 3/4 feet in HO. That's about right. Cut off a 7' length HO. I think that would be about right IIRC. Cut that in half length-ways. Sand it all smooth and square. You've the body taken care of. Now you need ends. It may be wise to try a card mock up first. Cut two pieces of thin card/sheet styrene as wide as the body half. These will of course follow the contour of the end of the body half, but need to project a tad above, maybe 6 inches HO. Mark the ceter point of that top edge, as well as where the sides of the body come to. Cut from the center point to the point where the body ends on each side. You should have a rounded piece that has a shallow sloped gable oposite the bottom of the rounded part. I've done a down and dirty layout for the card If, as I did, you use the pipe to mark the shape on the card/styrene, cut on the inside of the drawn line to get a more exact fit to the body curve. Use your favorite glue to attach the ends to the body. My experimental body halves turned out a bit smaller than drawing, the result of the saw kerf I expect. No big deal, I've added a small straight strip to the top of the long sides of the body, to make up the difference. Looks OK I think, in fact adds a bit of detail. I'd post a photo of the roughed in body, but the batteries just died, the charger I have has a 6 hour turn-around; and the spares are in the Museum's camera, which is now at the Museum. Anyway, next up would be the lids. Simple rectangles of stryene. Open or closed? your choice. Glue them on. Paint what you've got so far, and set aside. The whole thing is covered in tar, so you don't have to be fussy about the paint job!
The trailer itself would take some research. How is the tar heated? Do the fuel tanks for that load on the trailer? Front or sides? How many wheels; single axel or duals? Once those questions are answered, strip styrene (make your own from sheet with a clamped steel rule and a sharp blade.) built up into a frame on which the the tank will sit, probably in a cradle of some sort. Freelancing the cradle isn't difficult as you can glue the body on and add bits for the cradle until it looks right! Add fuel tanks, and the axel(s) underneath. Rip some wheels from otherwise unwanted HO vehicles, add them, and use strip styrene for mudguards. Shove a trailer hitch out front, and some tail lights out back, throw on some more paint, and you're done. Worth saving $25 plus shipping nes pas?
That's taken the evening since tea and dessert (trifle from last night's anniversary celebration with our New Glasgow friends) Dick mentioned that we would be getting the heat he had...well we did, but today Sober Island was back in the fog, and a pleasant 19C instead of the record for the date 31C in the Harbour! Now we've Hurricane Bill headed right at us for Sunday. Here's hoping the cold ocean out there will cool his jets!
Goodnight all, and God Bless. Prayers for all in need of healing, comfort and peace.
Jeff, the backdrop is awesome! WOW!! The upcoming baby is doing just fine, she appears to like sitting on Amy's ciatic (sp?) nerve, or on her bladder, so yeah.... Still looking at the expected due date of October 27th-ish. Tonight's meal was McDonald's. Not my exact favorite, but hey, the new Angus burgers they have are pretty good. Welp, its Heather's bath time, so I'm off to get splashed and wet before offloading her to mommy for bed.

Afternoon all from SunnyHOTCalif: The second half of August has come in like a dry Lion, breathing fire. We had 3 big ones out here, one in Santa Cruz, one up a little northeast of us in the Sierra Foothills, and a big, BIG one down near Santa Barbara (AGAIN!). The two up here are pretty much under control, the one in Santa Barbara (which was started by a Mexican drug cartel's abandoned campfire, thank you very much ) is still going. Outside temperature is 100, still air, polluted by smoke. Needless to say, no working on the MR in the garage this week.
Haven't posted in the past several days (and about 5 pages, so I see) so I'll have to catch up. My 95 year old mother is down for a while, which makes it kind of fun--she's hardly helpless, but her short-term memory is shot, so our conversations consist of repeating information Ad Infinitum. Hey, it's okay. But her two favorite TV shows are "The Golden Girls" and "NCIS", so I'm pretty much hunting them up on the satellite channels all day to keep her happy. She's got the 'hots' for Mark Harmon.
School officially starts next Monday, we've got a Faculty/Staff Retreat, then two days of orientation, and then start up officially with classes on Thursday. Looking forward to it. Choral Camp was a blast last week--we're really ready for the semester.
It should be interesting, though, because of the schedule. Concert Choir is the first period of the day (8:15) and half of our bass section is on the football team, which has warm-up sessions before school. The campus is about 40 acres large, and the choir room is clear across the campus from the field. It'll be interesting to see what our Bass section sounds like at that hour, LOL! REALLY warmed up!
Robby: Keep that outer oval independent. Hey, we DC'ers ALSO need a place to run our trains if we come over to visit, LOL! I like what you're doing, though. Right now I'm trying to figure out just exactly WHERE I'm going to run a lead off of my main to the projected staging yard on the other side of the garage. Ah yes, Plan Ahead, LOL!
Sawyer: Are you a Junior, this year? If so, GET READY!! Our Juniors spend the first semester just walking around with their jaws dropped. I have NO idea why everything in high school is planned out so that Juniors get so clobbered with such intense classes. When you get to college, it's the first TWO years, then when you get to your Junior year, it's a breeze. Never COULD figure that out.
Okay, Mom just called from the living room. Evidently NCIS changed over to something else. I'll catch up later.
Best to all, prayers to those in need.

Worked along the west and north sides of the layout today and have most of the seams in those parts of the backdrop glued. I learned on the last one that while white glue or carpenter's glue will work for this it takes ages to dry, especially in high humidity. This time around I used super glue. Just squeeze a few drops out onto the back side of the poster board edge and let it run down to the bottom then press it against the other piece and hold for 15 or 20 seconds and it's done. I'll do the east wall tonight or tomorrow. For now I'm going to set one of the scenic panels in place and take a couple of pics to post so you can see how the base scene will look. The 3 scenic packs (two panels each) that I got from Busch are identical. The scenic add-ons I got from Detail Associates are what will make the difference and break up the sameness of the base scene.
Jeff.....Give me a few weeks, and let me see whats going on. I just hope the plan I have will work. I need some for myself as well .

Good Evening, Chloe - I'll have the roast beef special, mashed potatoes and gravy, salad with Italian dressing, asparagus, and a glass of Finger Lakes wine, please. Thank you!
jeffrey-wimberly That hopper looks great. Wouldn't mind having some of your work myself.
Robby, Jeff on that one - it does look sharp, and if I had the spare money, I'd be bidding on that one! I'd be inclined to combine Jeff and Todd's comments and suggest on the 'right' side, instead of coming beside the diesel shop area to the top red part, cross to the right and connect to the blue line (before the top right corner), to give yourself a longer run (if you like longer run times). Then add a passing track on the left side's blue line, and when you get to the bottom right corner, connect that up to the top red part ('above' the diesel shops area). How about something in this (general) direction? (Adjust the passing siding length to your taste, as well as the length of the hidden track sections):
- just saw your post on why you want the two separated. Disregard the above!
Bama, congrats on the 'halfa' bike. And yep, if you have the daughter's dance thing, followed by dinner, fast food of some kind sounds more do-able... Good to see you back in the Diner, and how's the pending baby coming along?
Gee, cats, cats and more cats! Big ones, little ones, purring ones, furry ones, food-stealin' ones, head-butting ones... Whew! Better be careful, I almost felt myself shifting into Dr. Seuss-writing mode again. (The Christmas I gave my daughter an iBook - many years ago now - I wrote this long, rhyming poem that I had her read before I brought out the boxes with the computer and printer. Poor kid now knows her Daddy is certifiably coo-koo!). )
I'll sit here at the window booth, eating dinner and watching the trains for a bit.
The upper part is just a loop. One small siding but thats it (forgot to draw it). I normally just pull coal hoppers on it. I leave the bottom for the switching. While I'm switching the upeer part just runs "laps".
I honestly like having the two separate tracks. The upper part is DC, and the bottom will be DCC. Its about 2 inchs higher than the bottom.
Here's some pictures showing the upper part.
Also a video:
Robby, the track plan looks good! Although I will agree with everyone else about needing some form of connection from one loop to the other.
Well, its a cloudy, thundering, wet mess here this evening, was working outside at my pastor's farm this morning until it decided to start bringing down liquid sunshine on us. Came home after that to find that I'm now a "partial" owner of a 2002 Suzuki Intruder 800. Partial owner means its my FIL's, but I can ride it whenever he's not, which will be fine with me until I'm able to get a bike of my own (keeping my eyes open for a Suzuki Boulevard C90T, just haven't found any in my price range). Oh well, right now just catching up, sheesh youse guys talk a lot, but its perfectly fine.
Zoe, I'll have a RBF and a small order of cheese fries. Right now I'm waiting on the wife to get home so that we can take Heather (our 2-1/2 year old) up to her dance class for the evening and then try to figure out what to do for dinner. Last night was spaghetti (a combined work of both Amy and I), so tonight will probably be fast food, or takeout, or something to that effect since it'll be around 7 before we're back home and if I have to sit something out to defrost, it'll be around 9 before we eat.
Nothing going on on the MRR front, funds have been a little tight, but its getting better. I've got a couple of good railfanning pictures from two nights ago when Q650 came through Troy, but I haven't found the cord to connect the camera to the computer, but when I find it, I'll be uploading them.
Well the wife just pulled up, so off we go! I get to watch the little girl do ballet.
Robby, looks great!
Well, I'm going to go crazy this year. Beenb doing homework from probably 4-5:30, and STILL have more to do. I finally had to take a break, lol.

Robby- I like the continuous loop, I like to have that option to "let em run" But I don't see where you can get from the blue to the red. Unless when you say upper you really mean upper, way upper. I would want a way to get the train on the blue loop to get to the red and vice versa. Also, you might want to consider a passing siding on the blue along the right side maybe (?). Nice long stretch especially if you ever get a passenger train, would be good spot for station. Of course I don't know what your industry layout is.
Just a suggestion.

In order to keep my position as Master and Supreme Ruler of the House, I don't argue with my wife.
I'm a small town boy. A product of two people from even smaller towns. I don’t talk on topic….. I just talk.
Robby: No action on the blue line? I take it that's a continuous run.
Ok here's a trackplan I am leaning towards. The blue line is the upper part, and the red is th elower part. The black is the table. Its not set in stone, but I kinda like it.
The middle table will have a small diesel shop, and the other side maybe a warehouse. The one siding might be a propane business.
The one section near the controls is the cement plant, and its staying.
Just let me know what you think.
Sorry the lines aren't to straight. You get a idea thou .
Well, It's been a good day in the respect that any day you learn something is a good day. I've learned three lessons today.
Lesson 1- When applying your fade, be sure to do it in good lighting. What looks good in fair lighting will be too much when you bring it to a well lit place.
Lesson 2- Even after the paint is dry, the moisture from your favorite beverage bottle will be transferred to your fingers and when the model is handled, will erase what you've done where your fingers where. Use a coolie, or make sure your fingers are dry if you have to handle the model.
Lesson 3- a little paint goes a looooong way. Either mix very little or have another empty paint bottle to store the un used paint for the next time.
I was intending to take a before picture but after finding the wifes camera I discovered the battery was dead and the son has the charger at his house. Don't ask why, I didn't want to know. However it may still happen as I will be removing the fade which should be fairly easy after learning lesson 2.
Robby- As usual
Rob- I noticed her too. But I was too embarrassed to say anything!!!! (well designed I might add)
Afternoon folks!
So far I have accomplished absolutely nothing today except read about 100 emails..... there is a heated discussion going on at an NMRA Board that is for officers of Divisions, Regions, and National. Nothing too serious, but in response to some new materials for the Regions and Divisions and how they get and use correct information from the Regions......... Oh and I got this sent to me about 45 minutes ago from the R&GV Museum and just finished watching them. Enjoy! Here is the email:

***Barry, now that your toes are all banged up, maybe you can switch over to some bench style mrr'ing and give them a chance to heal? Ouch!
***Lee, neat scenes. Is the woman in the all blue outfit near the icecream truck married? Oh wait, never mind. Especially like Fox Creek. Very nice!
***Jim, found out the package at the PO wasn't the trailers, just some old junky N structures I picked up cheap on the-bay. One will become a Farmer Vincent's Smoked Meats store. Anyway, the wife's HO trailers haven't shipped yet. I hate waiting.
Looks like the storms have passed for now. We sure need it to rain a LOT again. The creek that waters
our pastured horses is turning into a trickle. Yikes!
Have a good day all.

That hopper looks great. Wouldn't mind having some of your work myself.
Well I finished up the "Katy" hopper. Hopefully it will sell. My plan is to sell a car for about $50+, and turn around and order three more cars for $50 (boxcars, hoppers, etc). When one sells, do it over again. Put some money towards taxes, the layout, and more cars. Well that's my plan for now .
I will probably slow down if they stop selling, but for now they are on "the bay" for a day or so. Then gone!!!
