Weathering Help
Posted by wholeman on Thursday, June 25, 2009 9:32 PM

I am going to do some weathering projects within a few weeks.  The first thing I am going to tackle is the trucks and wheelsets.  I would like to know what would be a good weathering paint color for this.

I would also like to do my Superliner wheels because the shine just doesn't look right.   Here is a prototype photo of what I am talking about.

Thanks in advance.

I used a diluted white acrylic artist's paint to get that look with my Allegheny 2-6-6-6.  It was essentially a wash it was that diluted.  I got most of it out of the brush and then went to work on the flying pumps, cylinders, pilot, gear hangers, etc.  For browner, rustier colour, I would use Burnt Umber, maybe add some tan, dilute it by about 50%, and then use an almost dry brush.

It would be a good idea to teach yourself how to do this using throw-away trucks if you have them.  Play with layers of different washes to see the effect.  Use your intuition for darkening and lightening the effect as you see fit.
