Why do people seem intent on using their "wishes" for a better/bigger/newer basement to put their trains in? Why not wish for an upstairs main room to showpiece the layout as the beating heart of your home? A dedicated museum-quality exhibit area, just inside the front door or foyer, with nicely trimmed viewing windows from all the other first floor rooms, perhaps with the staging yard built into a clear-topped kitchen bar, and branch lines snaking through stud wall cavities to reach remote towns or industries tucked into unused corners of rooms...

These days, most new single-family residences have both a Living Room and a Family Room, with the Family Room being the one place that actually gets used since it contains the TV and the Playstation and the movie collection and everything else. The old-fashioned Living Room just collects the more formal furniture and stays pristine between holidays or get-togethers. Why not transform such a vestigial space into model railroad elegance?

Of course, it would require a commitment to elegance that is lacking from most in-progress layouts. But hey, as long as we're wishing, wish big right!

A larger basement to build the layout in.

My daughter just moved into her new house yesterday. The basement is about 34 by 60 feet, stairs come down in the middle away from any walls, the furnace and HW heater are together so could be easily walled in, and the ceiling is 9 feet high.

I could build a very nice mushroom layout down there, with room for a shop and crew lounge, too.

I'm jealous!

Mine would not be model related. It would be 1:1 scale. I would like to see all the fallen flag railroads returned to service. Say from 1950 on. That would give us back NYC, B & O, C & O, Frisco, Wabash, NKP, CNW, WP, SP, Southern, Katy, The Rock, Seaboard, ACL, MP, and many others that just escape my tired mind right now. And since it is from 1950 on that would mean that we would still have Alco making locomotives too. Now you can't wish for much better than that. [;)] [:D]

Product Reviews would have better balance with new products in Every scale!

Trains would include 1 article on a railroad you could model in a reasonable amount of space.
