Walthers Empire Builder Green color match
Posted by trainsBuddy on Friday, May 29, 2009 9:40 AM

Hi all,

I have a couple of spots on my Empire Builder passenger cars that need to be painted. I bought a bottle of Testor's EB Green, however it doesn't really match. Testor's color looks more like light gray, wereas Walther's "green" color is more of a very dark blue. I also bought Testor's Pullman Green, which what Empire Builder color scheme is supposedly using based on books I have, but that color is too light green and again doesn't match Walther's paint.

So who's wrong, and who's right?

By the way is there a safe way to strip what I painted without affecting factory paint? Also what am I supposed to use to clean brushes?

 Thanks in advance!

Here we go Dude!

This is going to take some kind of a clear glass capped container and a pipette, sometimes referred to as an eyedropper, and a bottle of Floquil's GN Empire Green--which you say is more blue than green--and a bottle of some very bright yellow--just remember what yellow you use.

Put a measured amount of  the "green" in your spare bottle; lets start say, with twenty-five drops. Your start ratio is 25:0. Now start adding yellow one drop at a time and comparing your color to some kind of a standard. 25:1; 25:2, etc. Every time you add a drop of yellow your color is going to become more greenish! Sooner or later you will reach a "THAT'S TOO MUCH!" point. Lets assume that your "THAT'S TOO MUCH" ratio is 25:14. Add a drop of GN Empire Green; your ratio just went to 26:14. Sooner or later as you continue to balance yellow and "green" you should get it right! Don't rely upon the color as it appears in the bottle; always do your comparison with a swath painted on a piece of styrene THE SAME COLOR AS THE STYRENE ON YOUR MODEL! IF YOU ARE GOING TO PRIME YOUR MODEL WITH GREY PRIME YOUR TEST SHEET WITH GREY. AND AT ALL TIME KEEP TRACK OF WHAT YOUR RATIO IS!!!!!
