Nice benchwork Philip.

I wish I had some left over lumber to build my benches with.  Is it me, or has 4x8x1/2" ply gone through the roof?

BTW: Morning all.

It was a cold 15F when I got up this morning in PA.

Ah lunch time and not on my tab.  FWIW i used 1/4" cheapo luan glued to 2" foam for the sub bed and that's worked very well so far. No noticeable swelling except where the swing gate is (24" 3/4" ply base and lots of structural wood involved there).

Pics of the trip will be forthcoming and as soon as we get a new site set up as there are about 300 of them (too easy with digital cameras). J.R.

I used 1/4 inch Luan with 1/4 inch foam on 12" centers on the last layout and had no measurable sag after 2 years, so I think I'm going to go that route.

Afternoon all,

Root beer floats all around, My Ex-wife tried to sue me, well I won! Wahoo!  We are under a winter lake effect storm warning until 1600hrs Friday.  WX man said only 2-3" unless you live in the primary snow belt.  Well that just happens to be me, 44F out right now and the high tomorrow will be 28F with the chance of 8"+ of snow.  I guess that Alberta Clipper is heading my way.  I was at Home Depot today and they have ½" plywood good one side for $12 a sheet.  I've been using 1"x4"'s for my bench work with 2"x2" legs.  I just switched to 1"x2" legs with a 1"x4" brace and they seem to be holding rather well.  My next transfer will be in 2008 so I want to make sure everything is very portable. Did some research last night and found all the trackage around here and where I grew up was owned by LS&MS, NY City to Chicago. (Bought out by NYC) and my RR I named the LS&W, ironic.  Well heading down to work on the yards, you all play nice now.

Afternoon Gang:

Congratulations Lee. Now you can concentrate on the model railroading. I've been through some of those lake effect snow storms. I can remember a couple of those 2 to 3 inch predictions that were over the hood of my Jeep. I did like to get out durning those things and run around and watch all the folks drive. It was very funny at times. That old '47 CJ2 didn't get stopped by much.

MTL: Tell us a little more about your school project that will involve you model railroading. I always liked to do that type. Unfortunately they were few and far between.

Well I guess I'll start getting ready to head for home. I'll stop in tonight.

Afternoon!

Been busy at work again.... Banged Head [banghead]

So, where were we?

I've been hashing out my electrical considerations for DCC power districts for circuit breakers, automatic slow-motion switch turnout controls, and signaling for both levels of the layout. Now I have produced a new purchase list that hits around $500.00 just for the DCC power management circuit breakers, stationary decoders for the tortoise switches, and electronic signaling controllers.

Paul, looking forward to hearing about the HVAC silver tape solutions! Thumbs Up [tup]

Hey Digi Grif! Take your model train to work day was last month, Friday, November 10thConfused [%-)]

And I like your philosophy, but it should be "model some more AND go Christmas shopping!"

Welcome to the CS John! Sign - Welcome [#welcome] Sorry I can't answer your question, but have a cup of Joe on me!

Dick, you betcha! All the plastic is burned up now and trying to keep the cash flow on the positive side too! Sounds like the train show was fun and productive!

Philip, WOW!  Wow!! [wow] You really are burning the candle, eh! Got two levels of benchwork done too I see! Impressive work!

J.R. Great trip! We did the G.C.R.R. ride back in May of 2005, enjoyed the ride up and back, but was disappointed too that the live steam was not used. I hear they only fire them up in the summer due to maintenance in the winter months.

Neal, neat salt mine photos!

RT, thanks for the A&W, Chloe set me up! And a frosted mug too!

Whew! Glad to hear that is now all behind you, LeeYeah!! [yeah] Congratulations! We can all hear the collective sigh of relief!!!! Big Smile [:D] Sigh [sigh] Cool [8D]

Afternoon all,

JERRY,

That sounds like a neat kit bash a salt mine from a Walthers elevator.....like to see some pictures when your done..
it's going to be a while before i'm done with the salt mine. Everything is packed up for the move. Probibly will be sometime late next year before I can start on a new layout.

LEE,Would like to see some pictures of the salt mine there in Ohio. I will go in mapqust and look at the map of that area.

Like to add my My 2 cents [2c]on the benchworks. I used 1X2 ribs 16"OC and 1/4 plywood. These set on 2X2 legs that I drilled a 5/16 hole in the bottom. I then inserted a socket nut in the hole and inserted a 5/16 X1 1/12 bolt to use for leveling the tables. Each bench was 4ft long X what ever width I needed for that bench. I then leveled the benches clamped them together and clamped them with 1/4 X 2 1/2 blots. Two bolts to each joint in the table. I had a 36 foot table with 4 pensulas that came out 4 ft. Makes a big layout. And it is sturdy enough for me to walk on with no problems.OH and I braced the legs with 1X2 in an A frame design.

not quite, for Xes have a tendency to try the same thing every year or so until its to late. I know because I have an X.

Great looking layout  PC.

To the right of the picture you see where the 700' - 1000' ships moored to take on salt.  To the left you can just make out the rails.

Cargill, Cleveland Mine

The big black tarp is all salt.  99% of this salt goes out by rail.  There is a dock on the south side of the main building to load ships.

The salt from both of these mines is Ice control salt. Morton Salt mine is 2,000' down.  Cargill Salt Mine is 1,000' down.  You need to zoom in and click the aerial view button.

Evening Gang:

Luc: Congratulations. Another little one to spoil with trains.

PA Belt: Sorry but the Jeep is long gone. I don't know if I have any photos, I used to but don't know where they are. If I turn any of them up I'll see what I can do.

It's my bed time. I'll see you all tomorrow.

(By Jerry) PC...Bench work is looking good..Do you have any idea when the first wheel will turn? I'm with you use what you can get your hands on for bench work your going to cover it up anyway....Keep the pictures coming....
Sign - Ditto [#ditto]  When I think of al the “proper” screws I bought when I built the first layout, and re-used on the second one…then we did the reno here, and there were lots of drywall screws left over. That’s when I discovered how handy they were! Thumbs Up [tup]  Re-using lumber is pretty much essential too, with the price of the new these days, so whatever gets the job done within budget and engineering requirements is fine by me.

Luc:  Great Grandparents!!! Bow [bow] That makes you VENERABLE Hope all has gone well.

Must get to bed.  It’s raining now, having been freezing all day.  Quite the change. We are trusting that the rain (forecast to be all day tomorrow) will clear away the snow.

Good night all,a nd God Bless.  Prayers for all in need of healing, comfort and peace.  Angel [angel]

Good Morning All,

Luc - Congratulations - hope the birth goes well and mom and grear grandchild are ok.

Almost a heat wave this morning the air felt warmer than noon yesterday. I'll have a regular coffee and a donut please Zoe. Hope everything else is going ok for y'all and I am back trying to catch up work that I put aside in the rush to finish up for Thanksgiving. CUL,J.R.

David - Moving is always a challange especially when you are (ahem) younger. It normally works out better in the long run but you get some anxiety in the short run. Best of luck and hopefully you can log back on soon. With luck you might even have computer access at your new school as several forum members pop on during the day through school. Hope to hear from you soon - J.R.
