Some good news, some bad news, and life goes on. [;)]

I got the pics back of the Coast Guard Cutter. [:D] That is the good news.

Now for the bad news. They forgot to make the disk for me. [:(] So I left everything at Walgreens and will get them Saturday morning.

If I start a website at the place you did can I put the C G ship in my sig and link to the website? Poor Nora gets so many requests from me and others to host stuff that I don't want to bother her. She has really been good about hosting stuff but I bet that she does get a little tired of it.


I got a few enlargements of my 3985 pics. They came out pretty good. I was a little dissappointed in the C G ship tho. But it looks ok, not great, and I will email Dan a pic as soon as I get it. With him being active military he might have some "sources" that we don't so he can cut to the chase and tell us for sure just how big the gun is.

It is raining here today too. He started last night about 10 pm and continues off and on now. The grass was turning brown and dying but now it has grown and turned green again, amazing how fast it does that. [:0]

some members from my club got together and made a combined production of decals, so that the costs of making films and screen ( what they probably must do for each order of decals ) could be devided by all participating. any idea for you ?

Good Mornin' Everybody. It's a gray, rainy day in the mountains today. Actually it's rained off and on all night and shows no signs of letting up. I was going to cut the grass this morning. I think it's time for plan B. I finished hogging out the frame on the Genesis B unit yesterday and got it painted. The speaker and enclosure drop in very nicely. I had to use the "small oval" speaker from Loy's Toys because the large one just will not fit at all. There's no way to remove that much material. It would be all gone. Fortunately there not much difference in sound quality between the two, at least not that I can hear.

Hawk05, sorry to hear that the dinner was lame. It's a shame that the game got rained out. That part of it would have been cool.

Hawk and Dougal,I know what you mean about the NS paint. It is a nice scheme, but It won't ever look as good to me as Southern green, or the Southern's tuxedo scheme as far as that goes. They were both very beautiful and classy paint schemes. At least NS has the 4610 painted in the old Southern green scheme. It was done in 1994 to celebrate the Southern's 100th birthday and just repainted this year. It really looks good.

Well, it's time to go get going on something. I think I'll have another cup of coffee first. It's really good this morning.

Chris - saw the photo you posted of the tender you're looking at modeling and now I understand why you're getting commercial bunker since it appears to be higher than the original coal area of the tender. For my freelanced road I'm just planning to cut out the coal load and put a flat sheet of styrene at the top of the tender coal bunker, then model a hatch.

Thanks for the warning about Goo. I just recently purchased my first tube of it and gluing in weights was one of the tasks I was going to use it for. Is it just a problem when the car is enclosed (like a tank car or boxcar)?

Listen to Tom about Goo warping plastic. I used a bunch of it to hold weights in a Red Caboose private lable tank car and now the frame has a bow and the top part of the tank is straight. I don't know when it started to bow, I just noticed it one day and I can't tell if it's getting worse or not. It doesn't bother me except when someone points it out to me when they come over to visit.

The computer is going to be cheap to fix - new motherbaord and processe but I get to use my old memory. Should be up and working for less the $150.00.

Noah, i don't use one. i just take the pictures off the disc in the digital camera and put the pictures onto the computer.

not to much news on my end today. 2 different trains went through town. to bad they were the same locos each time. to add to that i've seen both locos before come through town so i've seen the same locos 3 times each. how often do you see something like that?

Ferg/Lupo - I still have some problems locking up or losing the signal, but it has nothing to do (or so I think) with the shortcut, just my ISP connection.

It was a warm one here today. The a/c could barely keep up. Now that the sun is going down it should improve. But I'm with Lupo on this one, it's cocktail time (with iced coffee and cake to follow).

No news yet on my oil tender conversion. I ordered some stuff from the LHS, once that gets there I'll head over and start building it. I think my next project will be a American Model Builders CB&Q caboose kit....

I plan to have pics of all of these projects once they're done, I'm going to put them on film, then get that digital disc Ed told me about whenever they get developed.

Now that is what they call updated server software, when you were out they performed an update, I think because we members were tooo happy with the forum performance! I got same problems, with forum locking up and producing error messages a lot more than before the "Downdate" maybe they are working on it, I noticed an unknown rednamed administrator browsing around yesterday.
ASB: One advantage is that all computers that you use to acces the forum can "remember" you at the same time, at least on my network I can use all PC's now without having to log in again and again every time I try to check out the forum from another workspace. Also I think in your profile there is room for a second signature ( txt only ). and non members cannot see signatures anymore.

Hey Nicholas, sorry to hear about your job, but as I understand they will take you back as soon as you turn 14, so you can just sit back, wait and maybe hang around this forum and gather knowledge that could be usefull when you can get the job back! [:)]

As much as I don't like the NS scheme (When your used to blue its hard getting used to black!) I will say its the best cheap paint scheme out there!

[:(] Your Scott Squad steam locos are pretty cool. My first thought when I saw them, other than how good they were, was how much ink they took to print! WOW.

The Turbine is pretty cool too. I have the Pentrex tape about UP's Turbines. [:p]

To answer your question about the photos I sent you, "NO, I don't want them back, they are yours." I see mostly UP here. So I know how it is to get to see something you don't normally see. Thanks again for the packages. [:D]

Well it is Thursday, can't wait for the weekend. I might be working, I might not be working, but anyway at least it is another weekend to enjoy (maybe). [;)]

Tom- the baseball dinner thing was really lame. we were supposed to play a parents vs. player game of softball afterwards but it was pouring rain so that didn't happen. all we did was got awards for letter winners and the all conference and all district stuff. nothing exciting happened.

the NS paint scheme is awesome. i really like the black and the yellow hand rails. i've only seen 2 NS locos in my life come through town so this was a real treat to see.

Hey Everybody
Just thought I would post you on the latest appenings.

A while back ago I had a bad day with my Bachmann CNW crane and later that night the string popped. So, I took it back to our local train store (Not really a train store, just a christmas store with a train department) called Christe's Christmas. The Train man at the time took it home and three days later, the manager called and said that It was fixed and asked If I would like a job in the train department.
Naturally I accepted only I was 13. So I asked my dad, (A police officer) and he said that 13 year olds could work with written parental consent. I have worked Friday , monday, tuesday, and yesterday / wednesday (friday I went in for training) and had a blast. I got up early and drank coffe and watched the sun rise on the front porch until my mom came out and said It was time to go every morning. I operated the train display (O scale, level one, HO scale, level 2, and N, level 3, as well as the G-scale double track system that hung for the ceiling that ran above most of the store. When you where in the train department, a real a large shelf with banisters, or like a loft really, the G-scale setup was at your feet. I was having the time of my life with the HO set up.
If there was a train set that the store didn't have out on display, I could open the set I wanted to run and when I was done, I would put it on an emptey display shelf. I also met alot of interesting people. There was this boy who couldn't have been more that eight years old who had a 4x8 layout with a CTC control system and ran three trains at one. He showed me pictures of his layout. He had another 4x8 on one side of his room and another on the oppisitte side connected with a small two track shelf. He had two passenger terminals, two engine servicing facilites, with one terminal and engine facility on one 4x8 and the same thing on the other, and much more.
It was my dream job and I thouroly enjoyed it. But, The Labor Department contacted the owner Mr. Coob in Columbia, who contacted my boss who contacted me. They were very sorry to see me leave and they said they would keep the job open until I turned 14. They called this morning while I was planing my layout. Oh well.
At least I will be able to get more trains with my last paycheck.
Now all I can do is to sit around all day and brood over my loss [V][V][V][V][V] [banghead] [banghead].

dougal, are you looking for communication to crews or keeping track of train movements? I use radio shacks 5 channel sets, pretty cool. I also made a metal dispatch board and then painted it black, built a case around it and used pin stripe tape for track plan. went to walmart and bought circular magnets and glued a pc of styrene to and with a pencil you can write train #'s or symbols, use pencil so you can erase if you need to change train #, then you can simply slide the magnet along the diagram. oh, I covered the metal with plexiglass so not to scratch the paint.Randy

Ouch that's gotta hurt! We had a strike like that once whie I was at sea. But I was lucky as my wife shut down and disconnected the computer. Though she said it was the eeriest thing A flash, an arc sound (no boom/clap) and the lights died and then every toy in the toy box with lights, sirens or voice box started to go off. The poer company was by the the next day to replace the transformer on the pole in our front. Thart was too close!

It's going to be another really good day in the mountains. There's a bunch of stuff to get done today, but that's OK. There's been a fair amount of "Drama" in the last day or two. One of Shawna's friends had a problem that we were able to help a bit with. It changed schedules and made the days turn out quite different from what we had anticipated but that's OK. Life is what happens while you're busy making plans.

Noah, what I've heard is that Walther's Goo used to fasten weights inside a closed car can cause a reaction and soften plastic over time. I've never heard that about CA.

Dharmon and others, I think a little forgetfulness just comes with the deal as we get older. My Mom used to say we'd just have to excuse her, she was having a senior moment.

Hawk05, I'm glad you enjoyed the baseball dinner. Those things can be pretty cool and make for some good memories. So you don't get a lot of NS locos through your area. I think that's a pretty nice scheme. It's certainly not colorful, but I think it's very railroady and professional looking.

Ed, I paint the rails and ties first. I like to do the rough scenery in an area and then go back and add ballast. The effect I try for is that of a line that's been in existence for a good while but which is well maintained. For the rail I use the following mixes, all Floquil:

new rail : 1 part rail brown and 1 part D&H gray
standard rail: 3 parts rail brown and 1 part D&H gray (this color is used the most)
old rail : rail brown
very old rail: rust or a light overspray on top of rail brown

For the ties I use the following, also Floquil:

brand new ties: railroad tie brown ( I use very little of this)
standard ties : roof brown
old ties : 3 parts roof brown and 1 part harbor mist gray
very old ties : 3 parts roof brown and 1 part primer

Color, especially weathered and faded color is very subjective. The amount and type of light you're looking at it under also makes a huge difference. I like the effect that these blends give me under the lighting in my railroadroom, but they might not work for somebody else.

Well folks, it's time to go and get the day started. I think I'll have one more cup of coffee first though. It's really good this morning.
