HEY GUYS !!!!! GESS WHAT? I HAVE NO MORE MONEY!!!

 

I spent it all at a train show saturday. I got deal after deal after deal on the stuff I got!

I got a turntable (manual) for $5, a MEC boxcar for $3, and MEC boxcar kit for $7.50, a PRR crearance car for $3 (oringal price was above $3. I got it out of a box the said that every thing inside was $3 end of story) red lights, a dumby F7 unite (which I nicked named F***U unite cause I thought it was a cheep engine that worked but hey I can crash it now with out have to worry about damaging the motor cause it does not have one!) a bumper (dead end pice)

 

now there is a funny story that goes with the bumper.

It was the end of the show there was hardly anyone left looking at the layout that was set up. I had a $1 left. it was $4.15, I stood there looked like I would really like it but doun't have enought money. I had been to that booth before to the clearance car and the lights so the lady who was running that booth knew that I only had change and no bills, so she gave it to me for my last $1.

I went there with.. are you ready? $18.81 I came out with .14 cents. talk about cutting it close or what? But hey most of it was ready to roll only my MEC kit needed to be put together which took oh about 5 to 10 min. the doors are held in place with white glue and the under frame and the container are held together with white glue. I was up untill 12:45 am using my new items.

I am one happy boy!

Well everyone, the train room is ready for construction.  Got to deal with the windows and lighting first, then on to benchwork.  Here's what I'm working with.

FERGIE: I am so sorry to hear that dad is sick once again, the poor man has his immune system so weakened. We pray for him daily Fergie. BTW how is Lisa coming along?

JEFF: WOW, you are one lucky lad!!! We are lucky that you survived Jeff, we would never have had the opportunity to meet such a great guy, and, your young friend would not have a great teacher for MRR'g skills. God is a pretty smart fella.

GMTracing: Taxes higher up here??? Higher than Danbury CT??? Well, let's compare. We have a 5% sales tax, I believe that CT is either 6% or 6.5%?? I have a 2800 sq foot house with 10 acres of land, and pay $2960 for RE taxes a year. Our State tax is 5.3%.
I think you are referring to living inside the route 128/I95 corridor which surrounds Boston. That area is certainly more expensive to live. I live west of Worcester, Ma, in the good olde country...no city life for me.

Well, I'm back. I'm feeling decidedly under the weather right now. This is not one of my good days. I've been having bouts of vertigo (dizziness) all day. That's OK when you're sitting down but not when you're up on the raised platform of a homemade tree trimmer rig.

When we were in Alexandria yesterday, David wondered what it was like to drive a car with a high performance engine. So I went to one of the old dept stores that's been closed for several years and we changed places. The first time he hit the gas, the car jumped forward about 20 yards, going from 0 to 30 in no time. Scared the he** out of him. He wasted no time hitting the brake. After that we made 2 circuits of the parking lot, never getting over 20 mph. Now he can't wait to get a license. I told him that back when I was about his age, I could have gotten a license at the age of 12. The world sure has changed in 34 years. Now the age is 16.

Good Evening All,

   A large root beer float would do just now. Nice day today though most of it was spent on chores. Got some time in the layout room this afternoon working on backdrops for the transition between levels. Just enough to look better than bare walls is ok for me. After I've done a bit more I'll start on the fascia for the upper level so I can't crash down between levels if there's a derailment (not that it would ever happen).

   Dick - don't mind me I was just making noise. Most of my opinions on relative taxes between our states comes from listening to my brother go on (he lives in North Attleboro). I think they are plenty high in both locales.

   Jeff - you're probably feeling under the weather from the driving lesson more than anything. Spent time this afternoon teaching my youngest to start and stop a stick shift car. It was harder than normal because I have a lightweight flywheel and grabby high performance clutch in my Focus so I was pleased he had a start on it by the end of the session. He is wiser than I was at his age and declined to take the car out of the industrial parking lot we were in and out on the open road as he was not satisfied he was really up to it yet.

While we are sending out search parties did Ed take a nap under his orange trees and decide to make like Rip Van Winkle? It would be too cool if he's decided to get cracking on his layout and has been too busy to post lately.

   PC - hobby room looks good. It's nice you have room for both trains and guitars. Unfortunately even with a 12 x 12 room my drums remain packed away under the tables. Just not enough room for both.

   Inch - sounds like you came to the right conclusion on the extra layout. Is the 200 tonner operational? I have two for the layout - one undec kit and one Athearn NYNHH with tender car that I just had to have. At the museum we have the double ender tunnel crane from Grand Central Station. It's impressive. Speaking of the museum, we managed to stitch the turntable together enough to get through the end of this season. After that we will need to block it up and rebuild the pillow blocks and probably fix the balance wheels (probably not the correct term) as they show signs of wear which is not suprising as the turntable has been around since the 1890's according to the builders plate on it.

   Sounds like the train shows and railfan trips were successful and if the banning either gets rid of our pest or causes good behaviour - all the better. Off to electric boat tomorrow to pick up the remaining spares for the two 44 tonners they gave us. CUL,J.R.

It was 14 here up until 8 or 9 years ago. Now it's 16 and a licensed driver over 18 must be in the vehicle.

Well, I just got back from the concert.  My daughter and I had a great time.  Those guys rocked the house!  And to top it off, 23 teenagers gave their lives to Christ!  It was very cool.  Got to hang with the guys in the band afterwards too.  Very down to earth bunch.  They're called "Story Side B".

JR, drums do take up a bit more room.  I was lucky to get that tower stand as it takes up very little floor space and yet it holds 6 guitars.  Now all I need is a better amp then the three practice amps I've got now.  Man, I miss the days of my old Marshall full stack!

Cloudy again today, high mid 50's, slight chance a a shower, and looks the same all week. Didn't do much of anything yesterday, but the have too's. Laid around an gave my back n legs a rest, feel some better today.

The @#$%% Bears lost yesterday, but they deserved it, no better than they played. Think a good high school team could have beat'em.

Jeff,,, I remember my first time in a 56 ford, my cousin had souped up and it surprised the --- out of .me. The legal driving age was 16 here, when I got my license, but I'd all ready been driving to town, on a farm permit for 3 years. Use to take ear corn to the co-op for feed [right across from the jail] and walk to school. Course I had to make a cruise through the Dog n subs and Tastey freeze on the way home.

GMT / PC, glad ya liked the crane, I've got 3 cranes, 2--200 tonners and a lite weight 100 that I drag around some times. Don't know if that one runs or not, wasn't any one round the yard, but the yard office was unlocked.

GMT,,, sounds like you folks have a big project ahead with the turn table, sure hope you get some good weather for it.

Sorry about not coming and signing off last night, I was not feeling well. I was having severe attacks of vertigo and could hardly stand. Dizziness just comes over in waves in attacks like that. I told my doctor about them and he said that is one of the more unfortunate complications of the severe nerve damage that I have.

Good Morning All,

   Cool with the usual high overcast of gray this morning. I'll have some of that coffee and a donut please.

   PC - the full stack Marshalls and Fender amps(and the Voice of the Theatre PA columns and all the other stuff we used back in the 60's/70's was indeed way cool but really heavy and bulky. Of course I needed a double bass and four toms and a set of cymbals the size of beach umbrellas to go with it plus drum mics. Much easier later playing in the country bands later. I could fit all my kit into my Triumph Spitfire with a little thought though driving back from gigs late with all the drunks could get a little dodgey.

   Inch - I wasn't going to say anything about "Da Bears" but yes they played poorly. So did the Giants except that Tiki wasn't havin' it and pulled the rest of them back up with him. A lucky win none the less. The trick to the turntable will be blocking it up so we can access the center bearing. Lots of wood needed to do that. Interestingly the turntable was manufactured in Chicago though I doubt the company is still around. Need to get more info and do the Google thing.

   Jeff - you're probably at work by now but remember to take it easy and pace yourself.

Morning everyone!

Another fine morning in central Indiana.  Well, see for yourself.....

So how is everyone today?

Got school this evening and work all day.  Man, that makes for a long day!  7am to 10:30pm!

inch, no, I didn't get anything done other then the room is set up.  I had to get ready for the concert and all.  Next weekend I'm hoping to do real damage to that project though.  Nothing really standing in the way now!

J.R., I know what you mean about all the "stuff".  My best friend was a drummer and I had a '79 Trans Am and he had a '68 Camero, and between the two of us we could just fit all of our gear plus us driving.  Didn't help that he played a double bass and I had to take at least two guitars (in case I broke a string on stage) everywhere.  Man, I'd forgotten about trying to get a double bass in the back seat of a Trans Am!  Talk about shoehorning!

Jeff, good to see you're feeling better!

Man, I remember my first time driving!  All of 13 years old and driving a '66 Mustang with a stick!  Didn't stall it though!  Took a couple hundred miles off of the tires, but I didn't stall it!  Later I graduated to a '69 Dodge Polara that was an ex california high speed pursuit car.  Had a 440 police interseptor engine and would pass anything except a gas station!  Ahhh, those were the days!

Good Morning!

Wow! Lot of catching up to do, and to get you all caught up on what’s been happening here too.

Spent my flex Friday off running errands and did get to the Train Buddy train shop to pick up some wye switches that were on order from July. Then I met one of the “Buds” and spent over 2 ½ hours talking shop with the train buddy’s.

Then I had to pick up Ben early from school for a follow-up visit with the dermatologist, he has some sort of rash just above his right ankle that will not go away. After two weeks of putting on an anti-fungal cream it’s still there. So the doc decides they need to do a biopsy on his rash. Now I am not one to faint but when it comes to my son I really get concerned, and I really start to fell for him. My little buddy has been through a lot and it was tough to see him go through this too. We are still waiting for the results from the lab; hopefully it will not be anything serious.

You thoughts and prayers would be appreciated for my little buddy Ben!

On some brighter notes…

I got an email from Philip (PC) and what a surprise when he said a package is one its way. Thanks again for the kits! Your kindness and generosity are amazing!

Also got an email from Neal (NESU) and he is supposed to send some too!

I feel so humbled by these guys! You both really brightened up my day!

We attended the 22^nd Annual Neuse River Model Railroad Club Train Show on Saturday; here are a few photos from the event. Also a QuickTime movie in the link below, it is a short showing some freight and passenger activity on the modular layout on display at the event. This has got to be the largest modular layout I have ever seen, it took up a third of the display floor.

You know you've got those prayers!  I know what you mean about seeing the kids go through stuff.  When my son was going through testing to determine the extent of his muscular dystrophy they were doing all kinds of horrible tests to him and I couldn't do a thing.  The worst though was when my wife and I had to hold him down while they injected dye directly into his brain for one test.  Man, talk about tough!  It's always tough to see the kids go through stuff.  You have my simpathies and prayers!

You know you are really a great bunch of people here in the Coffee Shop Forum. The generosity and friendships I have found in this place are invaluable. Truly a great group in here!

Dick, I like your analogy with the canoe, but sometimes I just feel like trading in my paddle for an oar. LOL

PC and Neal, I got your emails! (You already know I responded too) The excitement level here has been turned up a few notches, Friday night I told Monique about what you guys are doing and she was really excited. Mums the word with Ben though, he will be so happy come Christmas morning! Your spirit of giving has warmed the spirit in my heart too!

PC, your daughter was raised right I see, and I am sure you had a big hand in that too! It is always nice to hear of teenagers getting along with their parents, it gives me something to strive for with our kids as they grow up too! I also hope that the kits will help Ben and I bond more. Looks like the train room is ready for some benchwork activity…. And you play the guitar too, eh! Ben and Bryan both play too! Sounds like the concert was fun too! My step son Bryan is a member of a Christian rock band in south Louisiana, their name is Miscreant. I'm partial to the Texaco station too, my dad worked for them for 30 + years.

Jeff, sounds like you had been pushing yourself too hard there buddy! Take a break and drink plenty of fluids, you know the Coffee Shop is open 24/7 okay! Also, thanks for sharing your accident experience. You really are a brave soul, and a true survivor. I think that is a great dream too, the Orient Express is such a storied and romantic train! And you got a great E7 there, Proto 2000 are good trains.

PA Belt, good luck with the sinus infection! We just shook off those over here, took about two weeks of antibiotics to get them under control.

Hoople, sorry to hear about the soccer game, but you win some and you lose some. Better luck next time, eh!

GMT, yes, adding texture to your paint is a great way to add realism to the layout.

Inch, I know what you mean about the commercialism of Christmas, but when you have the spirit of true giving in your heart, all the rest just rolls off your back like water on a duck. All that junk of promotions and stuff before Halloween does get old quick though! Hopes and prayers for Becky too! And nice pics of that crane there too!
