Evening all and twice in one day for me. I think that is a record

Paul Here are a couple shots of them loading and it was interesting to watch and the chutes don’t come down or go up fast but at a nice easy pace.

Noah Here are a couple pics for you. They aren’t the greatest.

Well that’s about it and I think I will go back to the corner booth for a while to watch and listen.

Talk to you later

Evening Gang:

Duke those are great shots of the loading process. The second picture shows really well the workers on the cat walk opening the doors. You can also see the ladder that they have to climb down to get to the cat walks. I've only seen the loading in videos. My dock will be about 11ft long with about 90 pockets on one side. I've made molds for the chutes but haven't gotten around to doing the doors yet. I think that the cat walks are going to be the most time consuming part of the dock. I'm going to try using as much Plastruck material as I can. I think that they have the railings and ladders. I don't know about the cages for the ladders.

I got down to the basement again and looked up the plans for a river class boat that Ken Larsen is needing. I'll have to bow out and drop him a line.

Good evening all , I'm just stopping in to say Hello I've been tied up this entire weekend and haven't had a chance to read all the posts but I did notice some new faces and would like to add my welcomes to anyone new. I've been trying to get my web site up and running(my server is offering  a free site so why not) so that I can post my pic without dealing with the photo hosting sites. hopefully I'll get some time to work on that this week, I've got a bunch of pics of my layout.

Got to go for now

Hello gang: Have been wandering back from page 1179 until I found stuff I recognized.Big Smile [:D]

to all the new and returning CS members since I was last in.  Grandchildren all safely packed back home with mom. All that’s left is being mailed out tomorrow. One item per child as it happens, including something rather cool.  The youngest stated, while out on a walk to the “Whales” (basalt rock formations that project like beached whales into the sea), “I want to find something interesting, old, and fossilized.”  Within minutes he had come up with this, to everyone’s amazement.  The one on the left is one of the two he found in a rock crevice, the other is a “tourist shop” fossilized shark tooth Kris brought back from Florida.

Antonio:

I don't hang around long where I'm not welcome.
I think you’ll find that in the CS there is a greater degree of toleration, one-for-another, than in the general run-of-the-mill forum venues.  So, if it interests you, chances are it interests at least some of us, and those it doesn’t lose a chance to learn something new, because I would guess that any subject reviewed turns up a twist or two.Thumbs Up [tup]Big Smile [:D]

Ryan:

as long as we get some fresh mango delivered by Labor Day weekend we don’t care where it is now, just that it arrives.
…did you enjoy it? We ate our portion on Saturday. Although it didn’t look too promising before being peeled, it was probably the best we’ve ever had, perfectly ripe, and not in the least stringy, even down close to the pit.Dinner [dinner] Laugh [(-D]

Glad you made it through Ernesto OK.  We just had some showers from his edges today, that’s all.  Actually could have done with a bit more for the well.

What are your plans for the Labor Day weekend holiday?
It turned out to be cleaning up the house and trailer. More Labour than Holiday. Disapprove [V]  However, did get a nap in the p.m. Couldn’t be this       because of the  weather, more like this

Sign - Welcome [#welcome] back Fergie.

I'm half spent after a hectic but good 5 week cycle
I saw on the news this evening that one of the singers for the “Black Eyed Peas” had FERGIE in large letters down her right pant leg. Obviously you are not without admirers whether home or away!Laugh [(-D]Clown [:o)]

Noah:

I will have to keep the idea of building a model of the layout in the back of my mind for the next time I go at a new layout. Seems like from what you’ve told me it can help one catch at least a few things anyway.
…Yes it does.  If you compare the left hand side of the peninsula in the model and the photo of what was built you’ll see I added extra “land”. This made room for a switch back siding to service an extra industry beyond the HOn2½ engine service and turntable.  That’s just one example.
That little turntable , BTW, was easier to figure  than the one on your module. It was mounted on a 1/8” phono jack, and turned by hand!  The pit wall was a card tube covered with brick paper. Scratch built bridge, mainly balsa, I think.

The foreground focus wasn't quite right for this general shot of that complex.

<>
The road bridge is the exit of a spiral from a lower level, the scenery seen beyond the inside of the bridge is essentially on a tunnel wall, illuminated from the hidden side.

That’s about it for me for tonight.  Goodnight all, and God Bless.  Prayers for all in need of healing, comfort, and peace.Angel [angel]

Good morning everyone, thank you LUC for getting the coffee started!! The sun was up at 6 but now all clouded over, and we have more rain due here by mid afternoon.

This morning the DYI network ( Cable TV channel 105 here in central MA, Charter Cable TV,) had Working on the Railroad show. Chris had Ron Morris illustrating his water techniques on his Colorado layout at his home. Then, a Master MRR in Kansas City illustrated some great techniques for doing water in rivers and river banks, cat grass etc. If you miss the show, you can go to their website and read about the techniques http://www.dyi.com

PDRAGON: Ahhh, a former Mass resident!!! I was stationed near your home town back in 1959-62 at a Nike Missile Battery Site in Bedford, Ma and later at the Nike Hercules Site in Lincoln, Ma.
As for LHS, I am very lucky here in central Mass, we have 5 within easy driving distance. Maine Trains in Chelmsford, Henry's Hobbies in West Boylston, Tucker's in Warren, Shepaug RR in Leominster, Lighthouse Hobbies in Townsend. There are several more a little further away, but all less than 50 miles.

The new LHS in Townsend is really nice, here is the web site to check it out. It also has a layout with pictures, and the store has it's layout of product shelves for visitors to see, check this out guys, see how it compares to LHS that you might have visited.

http://www.Lighthousehobbies.com

DUKE: With the cost of insulation and other construction materials gone through the roof, I will be purchasing supplies at HD after I collect enough bottles and cans along the roadways LOL

ALL: I was reading on the Layout forum where one guy had a pretty need idea for his benchtop.
He used sheets of 3/8" plywood laminated ( glued) together to make his 3/4" plywood sub-base. What is interesting about this is that you can handle 3/8" plywood a heck of lot easier that full sheets of 3/4". Also, two (2) 3/8" sheets of plywood give you an EXTRA PLY than one sheet of 3/4" making the base stronger!!!
Man, I will tell you, swinging those 3/4" panels around is not easy doing it alone. 3/8" is a piece of cake!!!

Talk later,
Dick If you do what you always did, you'll get what you always got!! Learn from the mistakes of others, trust me........you can't live long enough to make all the mistakes yourself, I tried !! Mornin all , coffee Zoe,
Cool, with a chance of rain,  fells like Oct. already. No MRR yesterday, ended up helping Mother can salsa and working outside. Then she told the boys we'd watch all the kids while they were out. Then she decided to fix supper too for everybody, that shot the rest of the day, OH well supper was good anyway.

GRAYFOX, on the 4-6-0, I wish. Do have the shipping route to get it here figured out. NS from Monticello to Decatur, IC to Effingham [through Mattoon], CSX to the Aden sidings,  my back yard.
I can't believe the price of lumber n such either. There's a couple projects I need to finish, but was hoping the prices would go down some. Guess I'll have to bit the bullet and pay the price now.

PAUL , thanks for the info on the pvc, Think I'll pass on a full sheet. I know of a place that make custom signs, think I'll check with them on some scrap.

DUKE, Leroy does do a good jpb with the camera sometimes. He got a real good one of grandma's arm n J Birds bottom too
Thanks for all your pics too.

PDragon, if you taught aircraft maint 43131e, I may have had you for a instuctor at Chanute. Looks like you were there when I was. Been wanting to get up to Villa Grove for some rail fanning. I can remember when a lot of the yard buildings were still there, including a round house, coaling towers and cars sheds. The last time we were up that way, it was bout all gone. Do know the tracks were still  busy then. Liked your layout pic also.

DER,, your grandson made a lucky fossil find there. Looks in better shape than the store bought one.

RT,,, glad to have ya back finaily.

Well back ta chores, hopin for the rain to move in, then I can get some MRR time today. Hope every body has a gooden

Hope everyone had a great Labor Day holiday this past weekend. Monique and I rode 17.5 miles on our bicycles on Saturday, and it was a beautiful day, clear crisp air and clear skies. We found one of the greenways in north Raleigh that winds it’s way around Crabtree Creek and up to one of the lakes operated by the Raleigh Parks and Recreation Department.  My legs are still smarting from the ride.

BBQ this weekend some pork baby back ribs and burnt some hot dogs, also had some corn on the cob too.

Layout update: Extended the roadbed for the double mainline tracks along the eastern wall of the layout, and had to make a few adjustments getting it around the upper level bracket and making the curve around the window AC unit. So all in all I spent about two hours getting 5 feet of roadbed measured, cut, and attached to the benchwork.

Lot of catching up to do, so if my replies seem short or I miss someone….. sorry!

Luct, thoughts are with Gloria, hope that she it getting better soon. And Gloetown is getting spiffed up too I see, keep up the good work. That sugar refinery sure is sweet!

Dick, thanks for the EEE explanation, I had heard of encephalitis, but not that particular strain. Hope you faired will with all the rain too!

Hoople, I can only surmise from your Labor Day Weekend response that you are not looking forward to returning to school today!  As Benjamin Franklin is quoted as saying once, “An investment in knowledge pays the best dividends.”

Sign - Welcome [#welcome] Back Fergie! Five weeks of your absence and a lot has happened. Hope to see some of those 700 + photos of your latest adventure…

AntonioFP45, not to worry, I enjoy reading and reviewing topics that have been in the forum for many years. Sometimes it is nice to see a great topic revived that I had forgotten about.

Oh, and Sign - Welcome [#welcome] to the CS, you are always welcome and encouraged to drop in often.

Duke, looking forward to the Apex event, but who’s counting eh LOL. And photo updates again from the trip are great!

Man O War, good luck with the treatments and keep us posted on the Kadee couplers too. And congratulations on the new addition to the family!

PA Belt, school just started and now you getting into fights? I hope it was not over trains…

Bill, logging railroad layout sounds like a great plan. I hope to create some logging on my layout soon. Great to hear from you too, and thanks always for the daily donut delivery.

Inch, layout works sounds like good progress. Ham n beans sounds good too, got a recipe to share there, or is that a secret?

John, nice pics you got there of the CSX and stack trains, thanks for sharing them in the CS.

Dick, Ernesto mostly affected the eastern part of NC and some areas in the southern coastal areas are still having flood stage rivers at this time. We faired well however, being in the central area of the state. Glad to hear you only got .88 rain, we had over 4” here in three days of rain last week.

Paul, sounds like you are making progress on the layout, Gator foam board looks interesting. I have read a few articles on that material, how do you like working with it?

Sign - Welcome [#welcome] to the Coffee Shoe Cleo!  But be careful because our Coffee Shop staff Chloe and Cleo might get confused with your name… And if someone says “hey, Cleo, I’ll have an order of those lumberjack specials…” they are not giving your orders, OK!

Welcome back Matt! Congratulations on the football game!

Jim in the Cape, sounds like you have been workin on the railroad too!

James, heard the news of Steve Irwin and what a shock it was. He did such great things and we loved his shows. He led an adventure filled life and enjoyed what he did, I am sure that he would have preferred to part doing what he loved. Thoughts and prayers go out to him and his family, and his loving fans worldwide.

RT, dang, over 3 days without electricity, hope all is well now. Reminds me of Katrina last year.

Cheers,

Ryan

Pancakes, sausage and coffee for today.  Thank you.  Workin on the rail roads is soon coming nearer to the top of the list.  Today I'm Mr Mom again.  How fun!  Dirty diapers and then right to nap time.  I've never seen such well behaved 7 month olds.

Lunch time, brought in some ham n beans, corn bread left overs if any one wants any Zoe, not much left out 5# beans and a 7# ham.

RYAN, no secret recipe, for my beans. I cook in a  10 gal. renderin kettle,, at least 5# beans, 7+ # ham, 1 1/2 ex lg. onion [dice up the other half] [ some people add more when they dish it up], bout 5 gal. water to start, salt, pepper, and at least one hand full wood ashes.
Hang the kettle over a wood fire, add in every thing, bring it to a boil, then let the fire die down, cook over low heat for 4 to 5 hours, add water, salt, pepper, as needed.
DO NOT stir round n round. I use an old canoe paddle and just push it down the sides.
Thats it,  it'll cook down to about 3 to 4 gal. [depending on thickness] and feed bout 8 adults. You can use a 2 1/2 qt. dutch oven if you want. It'll hold a 1# beans n 2# ham easy.

Needs ta get back to chores. We got a couple sprinkles earlier, but the suns out now, so back outside I go

Happy lunch time guys, I see I am TOTP, so eat up, on my tab. Mike has some very interesting beans, they sure taste like ashes though!!LOL

Here is something that I just posted on the General Forum. I just received this email and it is too good not to share with everyone. A while ago I decided to buy Chevron stock, seeing I had to pay the high prices for gas, I might as well reap some of the benefits...right? I bough CVX before it split 2:1 a while back, this sure looks like a good move!! And they pay quarterly dividends too!! When your on fixed income in retirement, you MUST have other sources of income to keep MRR on track ( no pun intended ).

Chevron Corp. (CVX $65), Devon Energy (DVN $64) and Statoil (STO $28) announced a successful production test from a deepwater drilling well in the Gulf of Mexico named Jack #2, which could become the largest new find in the U.S. in 50 years. According to Chevron, the test produced "record setting" results which may suggest the existence of more oil in the region. The test involved record depths and pressure with the well generating a flow of roughly 6,000 barrels of oil per day. Various company officials have said that the new discovery could hold as much as 3 billion barrels of oil with the possibility that there is quite a bit more to be found in the Gulf of Mexico. Some executives at Chevron and Devon have said that the amount of oil could total 15 billion barrels, or 50% more than the nation's current reserves. New sources of oil, particularly in the U.S., could provide some much needed relief to high energy prices and the country's dependence on for! eign oil.

RYAN,,, yep, just the fine powder ash,, you can leavez it out if ya wants too. You'll get some ash it it when you stir the fire anyhow. Thats why you never stir round, it lays on the bottom, and  adds abit of a smokey flavor.
In a dutch oven leave the ash out

GRAYFOX, you'd never now it's in there, less I told ya or you seen me do it.

Now, Inch, what does the wood ash add to the beans other than some grit? Is there any noticible flavor enhancement?

And hopefully this discovery will bring some much needed jobs back to the oil patch in Louisiana and Texas.
