Well now, we certainly recognize that there are all kinds of different points of view among the people on the forums, and I don’t think anyone here will complain about you expressing yours. But I’m not sure you’ll find many followers amongst the old codgers (and youngsters) hanging around with their feet propped on that old stove in the middle of the Coffee Shop. We tend to ramble and roam all over the place with our topics. We're so far Off Topic that we're On Topic. We do occasionally talk trains, but it’s certainly not a requirement. No one here gets too worked up when someone posts with less than perfect grammar or spelling. We’re just kind of laid back. This thread has been going on about 9 months and close to 5,000 posts and no flames. Okay, so Fergie did get a bit edgy when I was cheerleading for Boston back in September and October. At least he only growled slightly under his breath. By the way, since it hasn’t come up recently, How ‘bout them RedSox!!!!

Gorgeous morning here in Mexico. Sunshine, [8D] cool temperatures. It’ll warm up later, but I’m enjoying the morning. Got some good fresh coffee in the cup, just downed a glass of fresh squeezed orange juice. Got to take the dogs to the vet, but after that I’m free for my morning nap. Life is good. [^]

We went out to the orange grove yesterday and filled the Blazer with liquid sunshine. I'll be sure to have the FCVN ship another load of OJ and oranges up north for you guys.

My Mom definitely believed in the Vicks. Yup, on the chest and just a bit in the nostril (I hated that part). Once I even got the steam vapor treatment. Bowl of scalding hot water, spoonful of Vicks Vapor Rub in the water, head over the bowl, towel draped over the head to keep in all those fumes. Now just breath normally!

Well, I’m in early today (but not for long) enjoying my day off. I made some more cinnamon rolls, someone (Jim) forgot to put them in when they got in late-I mean, early last night. [V][;)]

We’re due in for the SNOW today into tomorrow, some channels talk about as much as 12 inches 50 miles south of us, and I bet we’ll get at least 5-8 up here. I had a good night again last night, the train came into town about 8:15, and he left close to ten o’clock.

I guess I better get a move on though, the layout needs attending too and I’ve got a building to work on yet, so I’ll see you all, and maybe stop in later yet.

Seriously - the best way to do a track plan is to go to the LHS and buy some switches, flex track, and some kraft paper. Put the paper on the table and have fun pushing the switches around and see what works. It does lead to a lot of pulling track up, but when your done it looks and runs good. After you've done this a couple of times you don't need the paper. I've tried the doodle sheet and found out the the switches don't fit like the pattern and the buildings are almost always wrong. I found out that by using small buildings like Alpine models instead of the hughmongus Walthers I can get more indusrty in the same space.

Thanks Phil. Benchwork isn't really all that hard, especially since the drywall screw and the cordless screw gun came along. I just make open frames of a convenient size, and put cross members every 2 feet, never stopping to worry about the details. That stuff gets filled in as I go.

Keep in mind that I work in Overkill, and some of these newer engines can get up to 10 pounds. There are also a couple of places on the layout where I might actually have to climb up and walk, and I weigh 330 these days (down from 360).

A good chop saw, a tape measure, the screw gun, and a pencil will get 80% of the job done. A table saw, a saber saw, and a couple of clamps also work wonders.

The truth is that I'm really a bit of a hack. I don't measure carefully, I just get things close. The place where I try to take the most care is on grades and vertical transitions. Beside, benchwork doesn't need to be pretty, you cover it all up anyway.[swg]

Yes, thanks for your concern. I got the thing thawed enough in the garage to be able to get the carburator off, into the mud room, cleand out, and re-installed. Fired up first time[^], so we are back in business. In fact this was a maintenance day at chez Wood. The van tailgate latch, the garage door latches, and all the door knobs in the house, starting with my MIL's bathroom. Is there a fastener theme here? Anyway, I'm feeling pretty chuffed. Even a power out this afternoon caused by trees down on the lines because of the storm was brief, and didn't prevent our enjoying an excellent seafood chowder at our friends. We walked, and the return trip was a bit unpleasant with the wind. The wood stove had stayed in, despite the time we spent away, so that was good to come home to.

Got 3 of the 5 tanks I ordered from First Hobby today, only 1 1/2 days after I ordered it! The other two are on pre-order. Looks like a shop I'll be doing more business with.
Ed- I have boxes of prints, wish I had taken slides. Wish even more that I had used a 35MM as oposed to the 126 auto wind I used. I would have had some fantastic pics!

3. Spelling and grammar DO count! If you're not literate, please get help before wasting my time and failing eyesight trying to decipher what you're saying. Most of my posts are copied and pasted into Word for a quick check before I click on Post New Reply. Try it.

Hi all-
My big news is finally getting the paperwork that officially says I'm going to Fallon, NV this spring. So now I have the administrative "fun stuff" to line up for that, but I've got a couple months' down time to do it (I'll go work temporarily at a training school up here). I'll pay a visit in February to visit a realtor and go looking for a house.[^]

I read a few pages ago about having a computer built? I actually had that offer from someone I work with - sounds like a good deal, then?[%-)][?]

When we were finishing this house with 10' 3" walls I decided to use 12' sheetrock so we wouldn't have any horizional seems. After we got home we found out that we weren't man enought to lift two sheets at the same time so we had to break that seam tape on the ends and carry them in one at a time.

I've been on the D & S probably 8 to 10 times and I have yet to take a picture, but I had forty ladies take all kinds of pictures. I did find out that if you go into the yard wearing a white hard hat, tie, and clip board they don't try to run you out. You'd be amazed what you can do, if you dress like someone in charge. I was in the BNSF yard in Lubbock for two days before someone challenged me. Now you have to know that I was driving a 45' motorcoach so it wasn't like I snuck in.

Bob and Elliot, thank you also for your replies on digital cameras. I have been trying to decide on whether or not to spend the big bucks and get the new Konica Minolta digital camera that would allow me to use all my maxxum 7000 lenses, or, go with a mid range for now, like the new Kodak docking camera that just came out at Christmas time. I am leaning towards the Kodak at this time because it will not break the bank, and will give me the opportunity to learn what digital cameras can and cannot do before/if I spring for the KM digital later.

Rob, I noticed that you also are thinking of purchasing a DC, have you decided on anything yet?

Hey ***, I have a Kodak digital too. Only 3.1 megapixels, though. It does just great for most of my shots, but when railfanning, the recycle time is a little slow. If a train is moving kind of fast, it is easy to miss some of the action. I also have a Minolta setup for film, but haven't touched it since I got the digital. I don't have to wait to finish a roll, I have a printer if I need prints, but that isn't very often. I can crop or correct the pictures using software.

I have posted this picture a number of times around the forums, but I suppose it won't hurt to put it up again since we are talking about cameras. Big Girl took this last summer. The problem was the recycle time. The front of the engine was lost by the time the camera fired. It turned out to be one of my favorite photos taken that day, even though it was not quite what we had in mind. The vertical streaks are raindrops.

Good evening Ed, mind if I have a seat at your table? Gee , only two of us tonight! Thanks for the info on the Kodak, that is one of the cameras that the wife and I really liked. It is mid-priced, nice features, I like the docking action. My camera is a standard SLR 35MM Minolta.

Bob, yes, I do get CD with every roll I send in. So I can pop them into the CD drive on my computer, but I just haven't got around to doing that yet. We just got through 10 years of taking care of my dad who passed away from Diabetes two years ago, and 7 grandkids everyday, 5 of them 7x24 while their new homes were being built over the hill on the west 40. Now I am trying to play catch up with everything!!!

Well, the insulation is done in the train room, and half of the plasterboard is up. I need to make another HD run to get another 8 sheets, boy that stuff is a pain to handle!##@%$[:(!][:(!] I also discovered that I need to run a Cat5 cable to the room also, so that I can use the computer right in the train room. With another big storm due on Sunday, I think I had better make the HD run tomorrow.

That is an option for those without digital cameras, but actually having a digital is so much more convenient. And with digital cameras, like most electronics, the price seems to be coming down all the time. You don't need 4 or 5 megs to post on the web, a camera with 1 meg would be more than sufficient.

Digital cameras allow to see your results immediately, and to delete those you don't care for. No waiting to fini***he roll, no going to the store to drop off or pick up the roll. No paying for shots you really don't want. The chance to immediately retake a shot that didn't come out just right.

Not that everyone needs one, but those who are thinking about it, but have some financial limitations, would do well to look at a lower end digital camera.

I have almost the same camera as Ed but mine is only a 3.2 megipexel. I like the idea of the "dock". It stays plugged into the wall and the computer all the time so when ithe camera is sitting on the dock it is charging the batteries. All I have to do is push one button and the pictures are up-loaded to the computer and put into the proper file. Also like Ed, I bought a bigger memory chip so I could take more pictures. Now you realize that I'm a person that can go to Disney World, spend three days there, and still not take 24 pictures. As a matter of fact I took just eight and then wondered what I was going to do so I could take the film out and get it devoleped.

Well, I’m off from school, so I think I’ll buy a round of drinks for everyone, stick it on my tab(which I probably should settle up one of these days, but I may have to go into debt to do it.) I also stuck some more cinnamon rolls in the oven, they should be out of the oven in a few minutes, nice and warm and sticky.

I’m watching the Inauguration Parade on the TV next to me, It’s quite interesting. They have a lot of good bands, very well organized.


Well the snow is falling around here. We might get as much as 10-12 inches, but more like around 7-9. Depends on which channel’s weather you watch.

I want to do some modeling yet today, so I better get going. I may get some pictures taken too (don’t hold your breath, but maybe). Enjoy the rolls, and I’ll talk to everyone later.
