Good afternoon all!

Just got back. What a drive south on I-95. The rain was a nightmare. Glad to be back and safe.

And the old house is gone. At least my parents can get away from the runaway tax increases. Northern Virginia is out of control. Also, closings today make no sense either, my parents were in one law office and the buyer were in another office in another county. I can see why people are starting to ditch real estate agents.

Well I am going to see if I can at least get to one day of the conference and if I can get back to Philly early enough on Sunday, maybe popping in for half day of the train show. It may not happen but I will give it a try.

I stop back later.

Good Evening Coffee Clubbers,

Some of you have asked about the supply of orange juice lately, and since we were out at the orange grove today, I figure it’s about time that I gave you an update. It’s kind of a bad news / good news type of thing.

First the bad news. As previously forecast, we’ve reached the end of the 2005/2006 harvest. There ain’t no more on the trees. However, the good news is that since the FCVN ships “virtual” orange juice in those tank cars, and since the local juice plant “Jugosa” (that’s “Juices, Inc” for those of you NOB) has tons of “virtual” orange juice concentrate, we can continue to ship “virtual” orange juice from concentrate until the harvest starts again (hopefully in late September). Based on what we have on the trees right now, it ought to be a good year. Or at least it will be if we get some rain down here. It’s pretty dry for Veracruz, and some of the smaller trees are starting to look stressed.

Speaking of bad news, as Fergie already noted, Ben Pearlman, the owner of Papa Ben’s Train Place in Houston, (my “not so L” HS), died on Monday. Ben was a lifelong model railroader, and had been president of the Lone Star Region of the NMRA, among other things. His shop was (with apologies to Trent) the best model railroad shop I’ve ever been in. And Ben was just a real nice guy, always friendly and helpful. It was always a pleasure to see him. I’ll miss him.

Progress on the layout continues, albeit slowly. At least it’s not completely halted. I really need to get my act in gear. Had to tear out a couple of sections of curves that had some slight kinks in them. All my locos had been able to make it around them just fine (okay, with a little jumping) but my two newest purchases, a Model Power Pacific and a Model Power Mikado, derailed every time. I finally had to bite the bullet and redo those sections.

Week and a half until our big trip. I guess it’s time to start thinking about a packing list. I doubt that I’ll be able to get by with shorts and sandals up in Newfoundland.

Good evening gents, thought I might get the rest of the lawn cut today, but one hour into the job and the skies opened up. Now it feels like the heart of the Amazon, the only thing missing is screaching monkeys, although we have some crazy bird that only sings at night for hours on end making some ungodly noise.

J.P. & Ed The

RED SOX

took it Pedro and the Mets once again, 10-2, after the 3rd inning , the party was over for Pedro as they hammered him for 8 runs. Who is it that said, " you can never go home again".

PAUL The gas prices cannot stop a dedicated MRRist, nor wind nor rain, nor snow can stop us. I am trying to visit every LHS within the New England area, so that I can give all you guys the scoop on the ratings of each one in case you visit this area. I might need a boat soon though, some areas in the Northeast are under water.
Not caused by Global Warming???? My a... it isn't!!!!!!!! It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure this out, just look around at all the records being broken over the past 10 years.

TROLLEY ROB Yes, I could take 2 or more of these beauties. Let me tell you, with the skyrocketing prices of ALL metals, brass locomotives are indeed a great investment. It may cost $500-$1500 today, but I can assure you with 100% accuracy, that these very same locomotives will cost double that price withing 10 years.

Our neighbors to the south along the Susquahanna river, near Binghimton NY are being evacuated, 150,000 people!!! The river is 20 feet over flood stage we are told. And more rains are due tomorrow and Friday. If we get hit with a hurricane, there will be thousand of trees down because the roots cannot hold in all this soaked ground.

Well, time to hit the sack, see you guys tomorrow,

Nigel, I did a check of distributers for those label containers on the web site. It didn't mention HD and Lowes but they are available at several places around the area. Mostly electrical supply places as you said. One is just a block from my workplace so getting them won't be a problem.

Attaboy,

Glad to hear the labels are easy to get so close by!

Hope they help!

Don't be so sure my friend! I've been caught in several heat waves in St John's in July before and it's not nice. I'm serious despite the wooden nickel.

Step 1 is opening an account at one of the free photo hosting websites. You don't actually upload photos from your computer to this forum, so they have to already be on the web somewhere. Some of us use RailImages.com, others use photobucket. Right click on any photo posted here, then choose 'properties', and you'll see where we have ours hosted.

So get an account set up, upload some photos there. Then come back and we'll show you how to include them in your posts.

btw, congrats on finding someone who not only accepts your model railroading habit, but enjoys participating. Definitely a plus.

Regards

Good morning all!

Coffee and a Bagel, please Zoe. Thanks!

I posted the Roll Call Thread so if your going the convention post away.

If I can go on Wednesday and that is a BIG if, I'll just ride into work with Mrs. Gumby and walk over to the convention hall. If they accept walk-ins, great, if not, I'll go over to the new Constitution Center. Sadly, I live so close and haven't gone to the new center.

Go to run. More studying to do.

Good day all -
After a very wet and busy past 2 days, the skies have finally started to show us the $un! Although, the forecast is for isolated showers and storms throughout the next few days. Most of the rivers, streams, and creeks have crested, but with anymore rain, these will 'spill over' again.
My Fire Dept got a call for a 'possible' water rescue from the creek that flows through our village and all of the town the village is in. The report was a resident had seen 1, possibly 2 bodies floating down the creek. After an initial investigation, (not sure if it was the same caller) report came back that a resident had someone clinging to the bank of the creek behind their residence. Our dept was requested to man the creek at a point of about 1-2 miles down stream from the residence where the access for us would be the easiest. Our A-3 (Ambulance) and Car 1 (Chief) posted in a parking lot under the main drag and along the creeks edge while out E-7 (Engine) drove throughout the surrounding area and accessed the creek from any point possible to do a search of the banks. Since we were called as a '2nd' dept, the main dept was to start in the neighborhood where call came from. ONce 1st dept was on scene, rescuse by them was made for said subject. At the same time, the 1st dept Command requested a fly over by the local Sherriff's dept Helicopter. Air search turned out negative and we all went home, with the life of the victim saved.
So, our dept is still canvassing members for possibly 24hr deployments to other counties and areas affected by the flooding. Since I am off after today till next Wed, I will be adding my name to the mix starting this evening. On top of that, I am scheduled to pull 'duty' at the firehouse tonight from 6p-6a tomorrow. So, if I get asked to go, no big deal, I'll be able to. CFO called me last night after a very bad severe thunderstorm came through, to make sure I was ok. They (her and Josh) were doing fine, no flooding (they should not have any anyways, since they live on the 3rd floor) and still had power. Only problems our familes have, is her parents have water in the basement at their house, and her brother, (Captain for their local FD) has been out for most of the last 3 days dealing with flooding and road washouts (brother-in-law and in-laws live about 1/4th mile from each other in same village). My father in law has been up to early morning hours pumping out the wather from their basement. I do know they have loast some furniture and carpeting in the basement as a result.
Well, on the mrr front, I am glad I have not put the layout in the spot I have set aside for it. The computer and desk need to go into that spot now since it's where the broadband cable will be located (current cable for tv comes from the same wall outlet). And that's fine, as the next spot the layout will go to, may yield more room! [:)]
One last note, most of the interstate highways in the area are now open, except for the parts closest to the flooding.
Ok, time for lunch. I may stop back in later, but will deffinately stop in over the next 5 days I have off.

Take care!
JP

Good Morning,

Not much going on here, but it looks like I'm about the only one who doesn't have a weather related thing going on. It's sunny in the morning, then we get a small thunder shower in the afternoon, then it clears up for a nice sunset. Prayers go out to all of you who are taking a beating though. Bad, bad things afoot out there!

Good noontime to all, the CS has the sweet odor of garlic, I think Zoe is making stuffed peppers for lunch ...YEEESSSSSSS !!!!!

No rain here yet today, but the RH is 83% and the DP is 71F with an air temp of 77F. It does not get more tropical than this in Massachusetts. This feels like the Amazon river basin. If we do get a TS today, it will be a downpour for sure. Every lake and pond and reservoir is overflowing, the spillways are a sight to see. I cannot ever remember seeing this in my 67 years in the month of June no less!!!! The ground in New England is fully saturated from the Berkshires, to Cape Cod, from CT shoreline to the Alligash in northern Maine. If we ever get a hurricane after all this rain, or even a bad TS with high winds, there will be trees down everywhere as the roots cannot hold in the saturated soil to depths of 3 feet or more.

ED Are you visiting relatives up in New Foundland? Or, are you escaping the temps of Mexico in Summer? Driving trip or air? If driving, there are many nice LHS's along the way...bring $$$$$$ LOL

Lunch bell is ringing......OK Zoe, I hear you,,,

Visiting family. It's been a long time since I've been home (born there, but raised in CT). We're flying. Driving from here would be a week+ each way. We fly Mexico City to New York (Newark), then Newark to St John's. The connections are pretty good. On the way back we're going to spend two nights in New York City. Fran and Junior have never been there. A visit to Grand Central Station is probably on tap.

ED That sounds like a nice trip Ed, it's too bad you can't spend more time in the area, it would be nice if you could visit with some of us. And, New Hampshire has a great Scenic RR ride from North Conway thru the White Mountains along the ridge of Crawford Notch to Crawford Station not far from Mt. Washington. It is a 5 1/2 hour train ride and well worth the time, Lorraine and I do this ride every year in the Fall.
Also in North Conway, the Brass Caboose MRR shop and a great MRR Museum that you would really like. It has many layouts all set up with start buttons so that you can run the trains. Every gauge from Z to O, foreign and domestic, plus a great wall display.
Can't you talk Fran into it???

Good afternoon coffee shop buds! Chloe, how about a cheese burger medium rare and some of those homemade fries too… Oh, and a root beer float… And for dessert, some apple pie a la mode. And then a nap for later….

Finally took a few photos of the layout progress, here are a few for your viewing pleasure:

3rdPlanIt layout 1:1 printout template for the “cookie cutter” and track laying

Walthers Code 83 #8 curved turnout fits like a glove with the template

South wall view

The sub-roadbed is still not secured to the risers as it still needs to be marked from the 1:1 templates and then cut.

You can see even more of the updated images on my Google Pages web site linked below in my signature area.

And….here is another cartoon…

Gumby4, I know what ya mean! We just went through two real estate deals, one buying our new house and the other selling the old one. Funny thought too, how we were on both sides as buyer and seller while both deals were going down.

Ed, Great to get the OJ update and now rest assured we will be able to enjoy a great supply care of all your great efforts to deliver that “VOJ” to the CS on time. Expedited Express too!
Also, truly sad news about Ben! Hopefully someone will continue to carry the torch that he had done for so long. Thoughts and prayers go out for him, his family, and friends.
And your trip sounds like a lot of fun. Grand Central Station is a hopping place!

Mike and Duke- The check, uhh I mean the pix are at the post office.
Did mow lawn yesterday and a Big-@$$ T.S. is coming in from the s.w. Sky is black and the boomers are BOOMing. Bet the grass will need mowing sunday.

Gee whiz Ryan , are you in the construction business? Looks like it will be a honey.
Does measure twice, cut once mean anything? Allow for thickness of blade when cutting. [ I forgot and came out short.] Best of luck.

Yep, and I measure about two or three times, then make a cut, then sometimes have to make another cut, and sometimes have to sand it down a little, and then hopefully it all fits the way its supposed to!

Actually, way back in 1983 I was a carpenters' helper for about a year after I dropped out of college at LSU and before I got into my first real career cooking as a profession.

Oh.........look what I done did!!!

Ryan- thanks for the Surf&Turf with all the fixings. And the bottle of wine to go with it.
MMMMMMMMMMM!!!

Duke and Inch- Ment to tell you, in with the photos of the trains are 3 or 4 of my mess .
[ Fergie , my mess is the dictionery version of the word. I wouldn't dream of getting you mad. Only my lighter flames.]

Well the rains have slackened and the TS has gone east. Grass is growing .

Hi Gang: I'm sitting here with Gary, aka atsf railfan. He stopped over to gab a bit and help me with a small problem I was having. He said that he would drop in later when PC is buying. Something about lobster with a Porterhouse steak and escargot appatizer. Also wine and a chocolate moose. Hmmmm. Sounds good to me. PC get the top soon I'm hungry.

Nothing on the MRR front. We're going to the basement for a bit so I'll see you all later.

Hey guys, me again...

Take a look at this, it happened yesterday on our gateway bridge, it had traffic backed up for 40km

as all the Toll Boothes were closed so no one could get through... it re-opened at 5:15Pm about 4 1/2 hours after it happened, luckily the driver got out and the commuters around it...

WOW!! Lucky guy. Bad road breaks all around the world. Have had many such crashes here in Fla. Lost a few toll takers.
