Good Evening Coffee Clubbers

I don’t have too much to add this evening as I’ve been logged on and off most of the afternoon (ain’t retirement great!!! [:D] ) and have probably commented on most of the posts that were made.

Continued with the foam work this afternoon. I’m enjoying it and looking forward to doing some shaping tomorrow. This is really going to make a big difference in the layout, I’m sorry I let it go so long without just diving in before.

Seems to be a bit of “cabin fever” going on out there in the virtual world. First it was over on the Garden Railroad Forum, of all places. Then the usual suspects complained about Ryan’s food poll. Later I stopped in over on the Trains Magazine forum and they have a bit of a hot thread going because some guy started complaining that there was too much religion on the forum. Looks like he was basically complaining about people's signatures and stuff. I tell you, some people just have too much time on their hands. I mean, yeah, I’ve got a lot of time on my hands, but I try not to be a PITA about it. [;)]

Yes, I have noted all the new requests for dates in the lottery. As usual, I’ll post an update tomorrow morning. Sorry Noah, lotteries are required to have fine print like that.

I want to hear too, but I’m not sure you can judge how good a GATS show near you will be by how good one in a different part of the country is. So much depends on the local or regional vendors, and the clubs that put up layouts. Of course, maybe I’m just so deprived that I’d go to any show.

Wll welcome back to the Coffee Shop, Tammy! It has been a long time. Does this mean I have to start saying “guys & girls” again? It had been so long since we’ve had a visitor from the distaff side that I just got back into the old habit of saying “guys”.

Good evening everyone, I almost "bought it" a few minutes ago. We were supposed to be getting about an inch or two of snow from that big ocean storm, but it was "freezing rain" here instead after dark. I stepped out front to get the mail and went airborne. Lucky for me we have railings!! Zoe, I need the strongest coffee you have, NO, I don't care if it's almost ageing compound texture!![:O][:O]

Duke: I found the "cloud kit" at our local HD. This kit looks real good!! It was $21 here, and it even includes a tape to show us how to use it.....that's the "cat's meow" !!![^][^]

Dave: Glad to hear you are feeling better, Nancy must be a good nurse !!! I know what you mean by the mountains and streams. We go up to the White Mountains of NH each Fall for two weeks. It has been a ritual for over 25 years. We even go up in February and snowmobile through the mountain trails, and spot much wildlife, even saw a wolf two years ago. He might have escaped from a wolf preserve about 20 miles away that has over 94 wolves in 7clans.

I got the finish coat of plaster on the walls today, just enough time to make a HD run for the cloud kit, some "Utah sky" blue paint as the 1st base color for the skyscape, and all the grid-work for the suspended ceiling. Tomorrow will be a busy day for sure!!

Every time I have crossed that bridge (it does have automobile traffic on the river span portion) I have seen at least one consist making it's way across. The only time I know of there being no rail traffic is during maintenance sessions, and I am not sure how they schedule them.

Update on Garden coffee shop:

Vic, Bigboy and others, there was no name calling by 99% of the people. In the coffee shop there was no name colling it was on a newbies thread, and then only by one guy. He left. He returned. Vic welcomed him and so did I. He posted Oh God. Vic answered yes? I never if he posted again as the thread was gone when I came home for lunch. I wrote Rene, and she said many people wrote, very unhappy about the coffee shop. I don't know why, I figure if you don't like it, don't read it. Vic if you remember she even shared about movies with you.

I want to put a train outside as my 14 x 8 is pushing what I can build. Originally I wanted to put HO outside, think how big a layout you could have with HO. But many nice folks said why that probably wouldn't work. So as a way to get to know people, the coffee shop got started.

Matt, TJ, AJ, Vic and others were all having a good time. Then poof, gone. I am emailing folks over there as it seems anything I post to disappears. hmmmmm

Guess the PC police are worldwide. Glad I am not the President, probably by typing his name he would be kicked off. [:D]

There is more, but I don't want this coffee shop to blow up, so email if you need to know.

Good Evenin' Everybody,
Today was another good day in the mountains. It was cold and rainy all day, but it's supposed to be warm and sunny for the weekend. The snow or sleet or freezing rain didn'y develop. It stayed just warm enough to stay liquid., which is OK. I'd like to see one more really pretty snow this year, but basically I'm ready for Spring. Fortunately Gen. Beauregard Lee, our Georgia groundhog, didn't see his shadow, which means an early spring here. That sounds good, I'm ready for the crocuses, daffodils and tulips to start doing their thing.

I got all the weeds and tall grass planted in the area I've been working on. There are also some dogwoods and wild azaleas blooming there. It will always be Springtime in the basement. I've got some more foam to glue up in the Hiwassee River section before I can start carving it. I really like working with foam. The Silflor material from Scenic Express is outstanding. It's very easy to use and very realistic. I like it a lot.

Big Boy, shows are hard work. Our IPMS (International Plastic Modeler's Society) in Jacksonville did a lot of mall shows and contests. They took a lot of time and effort to prepare and to set up. They were also a lot of fun, and worth doing. Changing your track plan makes it even more work, but adds to the interest.

Der, your right of course, it's Norden, not Norton. I knew that, but brain fade kicked in.

Railroading Brit, I'll bet the Horby's loco running on 240V would have been interesting. The public safety folks would have had fits.

Philnrunt, the house is at approx. 2200' above sea level. Within a couple of miles we have peaks up around 3000' and 7 air miles from here there's one that's 4984', Brasstown Bald, the highest mountain in Georgia. It's about a 22 mile drive to get there.

Ed, not feeding the trolls is probably a good policy. I started to respond to him, but by the time I got to it, several others had already handled it very well.

I did kind of bust Bill Mathewson's bubble about the "seedy side" of town. I wouldn't go so far as to say this area was completely dry, just legally dry as far as tax paid is concerned. When I moved up here in 1993, the only place in the county to buy a beer was at the VFW. There was an ABC store (state owned and operated ) in Murphy. Legally, that was it. But there has always been alcohol of various kinds made in the mountains for as long as the Scots-Irish have been here. It was a right of theirs in the home countries and as far as they're concerned, it still was when they came over here.

Teffy's right, Bull St. Station hobby shop is excellent. I've only been there once, but it was worth the trip.

Ed put me down for June 13th on the 10,000 guess. Got all the track board down onthe layout , now am building a lift bridge so I don't have to duck under. Getting too old for that. hope to start laying track on Saturday, need to get trains moving. Hope everyone is gettting to feel better including the wives. Mine just is working too much and I wish she could spend more time on the layout so we could get more done.

Tim, I am just as saddened as you about the loss of the garden coffee shop. I thought it was going great. Was there any name calling? I find it somewhat odd that anyone would complain about it.

Again, thanks to everyone for all the support and well wishes on the portable layout. I have decided to go ahead and commit to the April show. I have an idea for a smaller layout using command control and switching in addition to the relay logic. That show will be a little different, as it will be in a high school gym, and there will be tables for train sales.

I honestly dont know WHY it gone blown up, Bergie even nuked the original sticky and nows theres a rather strongly worded chastisment, what for I still dont know..

the whole mess started when a couple members left the forum, why? i dont know? apparently some members really hated the coffee shop idea while a few enthusiaticly embraced it (like here) after a month of harmless banter (like here) something happened, someone made a comment that was either ment to an attack or was unfortunalty interpreted as an attack then Boom, two guys are now listed as "Error:" IOW they deleted themselves from the forum, which if they are that PO'd is there right to do so, but I still dont know the full details, Ironically one of the members who bailed came back today. But Bergie nuked the whole thing so If he did list an explaination, i never saw it. (Of course that expalination could have been the trigger for firing the torpedos, I'll never know...

Paul-Be sure to let us know how the GATS show is. Last year,here in the Detroit area it didn't seem to be as good as it had been,but a friend and I will most likely go anyway because he already has his discount coupon.

***-The cloud kit is in the paint dept and it is in a box about 8x10,and it has a picture of a bru***hat looks a little like a duster(not the car). Take a look at it before you buy paint,because I think there are three different colors to get the effect.

Jim-Different part of the country different meaning for abbrev. Yup sure did mean the DOCTOR.

Tim-Not only will the honeydo's keep the wife happy,but it could help you get some power tools to do them with,and then they just happen to help with the layout as well.

Vic-From someone that hasn't been here that long. WELCOME

After seeing some of the pictures of the different layouts,it is helping to get the butt in the basement. It is mostly on weekends and someday(hopefully soon) I will be ready for plywood and homesote. Hi Bill, I'm Jim (in Cape Girardeau, MO), one of the newer folk here. Good to meet you. Not to worry about the pink - just a wee bit of mischief Fergie and Teffy had going for a while here. I think the fuschia was mainly determined by a couple of CFO's who got a look at Teffy's (nephew's?) digital artwork (at the expense of Fergie's near-coronary)[}:)][;)]

I sure hope there isn't a dress code here - I thoroughly dislike ties unless it's for church, a funeral, or a wedding.[swg]

I like the comparrison to a MRR club meeting where not 100% of the conversation is RR related. I also think that we maintain a goodly mrr content.
Ed: nice work on those hills. I've really got to get the west end of my lower tunnel linked up to the east end of the viaduct by some convincing foam rockery. [:D] Perhaps if I were to clear off my work bench I would get inspired. One of the reasons it's been cluttered is the number of "honeydo" projects like a broken tea cup handle that pile up on it. The handle got fixed at the same time as a more urgent repair job on a photo frame for Kris' mom, once I bought the 5 minute Epoxy I needed "just in case". So, Tim, Ed's right about keeping the "honeydo" list actively seen to. Those small projects help justify the fact that we have the materials and tools to hand! [;)]
Having said that, I'd better get on and clear that bench!

JimRCGMo, Yes the stripes are white, though yellow, as you say, would probably be a better choice. As for the logo, yeah, I'll more than likely use it. Since I have no room for a layout, I decided to experiment with paint schemes for my RR.

I'm ready for the cold to go away - I can stand the heat but this cold is now into the bones.

I didn't realize that I'd gotten another star and a different color until someone said something. What is the next color and requirement?

I have no trouble with Biggie-small but I don't need the profanity and arrogance. I think that he has done some good modeling but not everyone puts on thier pants the same way, so I'm not going to get upset if you put on the wrong leg first. That's your problem. I think that he'd be a great help to newbies if he'd just get rid of that chip on his shoulder.

When you are in Savanah - got to Bulls hobby shop and take lots of money. She does dicker if you put enough items on the counter. I bought all of her Silver Streak kits for about $11.00 each but I had to buy 13 of them. Some were the old discontinued kits. She just off the historic area. I stayed at the Best Western Historic and was able to walk to the historic area. There is a track down by the river and when Savanah passed a law about train whistles the loco that went down their had to play dixieland jazz as it couldn't blow the horn. They contented that the vibaration was destroying the buildings. The train doesn't run down there anymore. I want to hear it, but was about three months late in getting there.

Good afternoon guys, just read your message Tim, I sure hope we don't have that problem here. I thought about it for a minute, and I can only think of two reasons why " coffee shop" would get cancelled:
1. Bad characters who would incite members to become nasty.
2. Server space ( too much memory being used for is not construed as MRR.

So far, I see the coffee shop as serving a very nice nitche in this forum. That is because many of the coffee shop regulars share some great MRR info, and more importantly, it really gives us a nice chance to get to know our MRR buddies. You cannot do that very easily by just answering someones question on another thread.
Lets hope that this does not occur to the Coffee Shop, and one way to prevent nasty people from spoiling a good thing, is to either avoid them, or, if you must reply, do so in a "constructive" manner.

I really have enjoyed the coffee shop, I think you guys are A1, and I hope I get the chance to meet some , or all of you somehow, somewhere, sometime.

Good Morning Coffee Clubbers,

Things continue cool down here, it’s probably down in the mid-50’s this morning. All the locals are out in their parkas.

Here’s a shot of the start of foam hill construction on the layout. Just cut shapes and glue to this point. But I may start carving/shaping later today.

Actually, I’ve found it better to not p off the CFO. If you’ve got one who’s cooperating with your layout efforts, a little work on honeydo’s will usually get you a few attaboys. Could even get you a few new tools. [^]

You’ve got that right. When one is young you’re likely to imagine you’ll live to 100 and be healthy and active the whole time. By the time you pass the half way point you start to realize that it probably won’t be quite that way. Having friends pass away, who are the same age or younger than you, is another rude reminder.

Hopefully that won’t happen here. Bergie has stated before that he doesn’t object to the thread. He said it’s like a model railroad club, you don’t spend the whole meeting talking nothing but trains. But who knows.

Hey all, I am very sad this morning. Over in the garden railway section, the PC police erased the coffee shop thread. Said it was not about trains. Had some overseas folks quit the forum, then this morning it was gone. In less than a month, it had over 200 posts, and 2000 views, but a few had it killed. Sad. [xx(][xx(]
