Trolleyboy- thanks for the input, you are the first person I've talked with to actually have seen them. Glad to hear they won't be crummy. These are the first locos I will have that are museum quality, so I am looking forward to them a bunch.
Ok, now i have a question for you folks, and Ed, I know it should go on the general discussion as a new post, but anything that mentions UP there turns into a fight. Here, I feel we know each other well enough to discuss it like adults.
In AggroJones post about Accurail, it is mentioned that someone(can't remember who) will keep an eye out for UP type rolling stock and then make it UP. Does anyone here know if the licensing agreement has involved any decal manufacturers yet? There aren't many left, but do they pay royalties on just the emblems of UP? I would think that they would, as these are the markings that make UP UP.
Just an inquiring mind wanting to know!
Oh, and siberianmo- I know your pain now, having ordered the SD38-2s all of ...3 hours ago, I wonder whats taking them so long getting here. Is there any kind of madication you could recommend? Ooops, I thought I spelled medication wrong, but now that I look back on it, that might be a better spelling in this case. From your posts, I know the only cure is holding them in your hands.
To quote Dr. Smith- Ohhh the pain, the pain!

Hey Phil my uneducaated guess would be that microscale would likely have been one of the first manufacturers to cut a deal with UP. If I'm not terribly mistaken microscale has or does still supply some decals to model manufacturers. At least the ones that haven't gone to pad printing(which most have)If I'm way of base sorry in advance. On a happier note have you picked up all the neccesary hoppers and ore cars to weigh down your new SD's? Well it's late and I have to work tomorrow, nite all[zzz][zzz][zzz] Rob

trolleyboy- Indeed! Over the years, I have amassed a (motley) collection of about 70 coal 100 ton coal cars, (yes, some even in UP marks!) and I figure those, along with the other way too many cars i have will put them to the test.
But, on a sadder note, I have no...I repeat no, ore gons in HO. Please don't hate me because I'm oregonless. There were times I almost went nutz and bought up bunches of them, but something always stopped me....I have a nickname for them -bills...so, as of this time, no ore gons. As of this time.
We'll see what next years tax check can do about that.

Just read the thread about Accurail, and thought I'd pass this along to the rest of you, in case you haven't read Aggrojone's post. My LHS (Bruce's Trains in Sacramento) has a huge inventory of Accurail cars that he's letting go for $5.95 apiece. They are mostly eastern roads (lots of hoppers), that he picked up a couple of years ago on a deal with another hobby shop. Anyway, if you guys are interested, it's Bruce's Trains, 2752 Marconi Ave, Sacramento, CA 95821 (916) 485-5288. I THINK the e-mail is www.brucetrains.com but I can't be certain, as he hasn't posted it in his ads in the last few months. The last time I looked (two days ago) he had a really large selection of hopper cars for C&O and Virginian, plus a lot of other cars. Anyway, thought I'd pass this along.
I'll post some pics of those furnace-filter pine and fir trees I'm using to populate the Tahoe National Forest on my extension--they're incredibly easy to build--and quick! Aggro did us all a real favor by posting the directions.
Time for beddy-bye, Spooky's whacking my ankles. BTW, Philnrunt--the Japanese code-breaking was done by cats on the West Coast. Spooky's from Maine--her ancestors were tracking German subs off the coast of Labrador--the pay was pretty good, too--all the Atlantic Salmon they could stuff into their furry little frames.
Later, gents.

Good morning fellow modelers,

I've been sitting here on the sidelines long enough, guess it's time to start participating in this forum-within-a-forum. (Most of you may recognize my name from posts to other threads, but if you don't, you can click on my profile.)

Tim, I hope your boy did OK with the surgery. I have a six-yr-old daughter myself, I can't comprehend the thought of seeing her go thru something like that[:(]...

siberianmo, congrats on getting a real-time internet connection, you'll soon be wondering how you ever survived without it!

I just passed a major hobby milestone myself: finally acquired some real estate for a layout of my own, by installing a new heat pump/AC combo unit in my two-car garage. I can already feel the difference, I no longer freeze when I go in there - even with this arctic blast that came thru Maryland. But I still need to put the insulation in the ceiling, a task which I positively DREAD! Just need to keep reminding myself that all the drudgery and itching (from handling fiberglass) will pay off someday, otherwise I'll keep finding excuses to put it off. I'm hoping that by posting progress reports here, I'll stay motivated to keep at it.

There is a set of 4 Kato SD38-2's waiting for me at my LHS, but now I can't afford them - I had to pay a plumber $450 to replace a corroded [leaking] water pipe, OUCH!!!! (Now you see why it took me 4 years to find the money to buy that heat pump...[banghead])

Well Good Morning Ken. Love your definition of Eminent Domaine, though in my line of work "bigger is best" especially when the really big ones take over 10 miles to stop.
BTW Newbie's always buy the first round!

Well aren't we a prolific bunch today!

Ed: Glad to see you're making progress but what's with the plastic drop sheet under the layout? Battle scars on the floor are what MR stories are made from and I'm working on Volume 3.

John: When you were here the other night you did not allude to your bridges in such a manner. I am truly impressed. those are excellent! Then again if I'd known I don't think I would have let you gone home![:O][oX)]

Mountain Tom: Glad to hear Shawna's on the mend

Tom Cat: I hear ya, but realize I work for the Dept of Fisheries and Oceans and am responsible for getting the Fish Cops (A very unforgiving lot) to where they want to go. The Only poached fish I'm allowed to have is out of the pot [X-)]

Turbo: How's the little guy doing?

Si: LHS in Thule? Ya your probably right but it's nice to dream. I won't even try to tell you about some of the "fine establishments" I've ventured into, remembering safety in numbers. Have you been to St John's Newfoundland? In 1982 the official Coast Guard Bar Count for the place was 250, and that was within a 1.5 nautical mile radius. I suspect the boys never made it past that point.

Florida Phil: Thank you for your kind comments, We've missed you these past few days.

Well If I've forgotten anyone I apolagize as I'm in a hurry as I'm off to the LHS but I will leave you with this. This was yesterday's progress.

They're not jumping yet but they will be! (MR did an article about a year or so ago on making fish from tin foil, looked really good once sunk into the "resin"

OOPS....my mistake[:I]. Chloe, a latte for everyone here, please...and put it on the same credit card I'll have to use to pay for my reserved SD38-2's!

Fergie, thanx for the warm welcome. Guess you and your Nova Scotia brethren are still in the grip of that cold blast...but obviously not enough to keep you away from the LHS.

John and Ed, keep putting up your layout pictures, they inspire me to do the hard work I'd rather avoid; maybe in a few weeks I, too, will have some photos worth posting.

Those of you dealing with sickness/injury in yourself or family members, I'll keep you in my prayers.

I need to logout and go to my day job now (not retired yet - still 20 yrs away from that), C-ya!

Good Mornin' Everybody,
It's a beautiful day in the mountains this morning. It snowed some last night, but today is beautifully clear, and a bit chilly. Loiuse was feeling a bit better this morning, which is really good news. My back is also a bit better. It's still sore, and I'm moving a lot slower than normal, but not nearly as bad as yesterday. I dont think I'm going to be climbing under the railroad any, but it will be a good day to get some more work done on the light mountain that's been languishing on the work bench. I've still got some more major piping to bend and mount and I've got to get the air pipe runs built and mounted. One good thing about Southern Rwy. steamers is that they did their own thing about appliances and piping and they really looked good. The bad thing is that they did their own thing, so there's not a lot that's directly useable or accurate from an out of the box USRA locomotive. The L&N's steamers were a lot closer to stock USRA in appearance so they go together a lot more quickly.

Saturday Bill M. and I are going to a train show in Atlanta. It's an annual event put on by the NMRA's Southeast region. I've not been to this one before, but it's supposed to be a really good one. It should be a lot of fun. While I'm down there, I've got to run by Kennesaw Trains to pick up some of the new Walther's 60' head end cars they ordered for me. I've got some undecorated RPO's, combines and baggage cars. That will pretty much complete the heavyweight passenger car roster, and they are good looking cars. Now to get them all built and painted, and the locos done, etc. What was Ed saying about "Does it never end". I don't think it does, but it sure is fun.

Phil, I don't know of anything off hand about sites on copper mining, but let me check and see what I can come up with. That's good news on the SD38's. Enjoy them, I've heard that they're really nice. Taking care of the womenfolk is the most important thing I've got to do. What makes it really wonderful is that they take care of me,too. In a life that's been filled with blessings, Louise is by far the best thing that ever happened to me.

Der, that is a beautiful scene. Not just the bridges, but the whole thing. It really looks great.

Fergie, that's good news on the 2-8-0. It is really good to see a company just go ahead and do what's right.

Ed, nope, I don't think it ever ends. The scenicing and detailing can go on forever. Pretty cool, huh?

Bridge Tom, " The Bridges At Toko-Ri" is one of my favorite movies. A really good story line and great photography. Flying early jets off straight deck carriers was full of challenges.

KenLarsen, congrats on the new useable space. That's a milestone worth celebrating!

I'd better go for now. There are a few odds and ends to get done and then it's pipe bending time.
Have a great day, everybody,
Ga. Tom

G'morning folks,

One of those mornings - I "dreamt" I was awake all night! Got back about an hour ago from my routine one mile walk with Juneau - or should I say, "pull"! Our Siberian Husky wants to go - go - go, and my aging body wants to slow - slow - slow.

Cable guy is coming over this AM to install an ethernet card in my PC. Get this - I'm hooked up right now using USB, but Charter Cable decided that I'd have better operation with the ethernet card (not that I've had ANY difficulties) so they are GIVING me the card with no charge for installation. Hmmmmmm - better hang on to my wallet - there's GOT to be more to this than meets the eye.

Man, am I beat this AM - think I'll just slink back into the chair, in the corner with my back against the wall, and muddle through my responses to your reponses to my responses ........ Can life get any better than THIS?! Bartender - another JD on the rocks, please! Ooooooops, wrong place - sorry![:-,]

And now ........

No doubt about it - memories are made of this (heard that somewhere - Dean Martin!) Love looking at it - really nice. If I had the required funds, I'd track down
as many of my childhood Lionel trains as are available - you know, money being no object! - I'd love to have them again. Then, there'd just have to be a room set aside for O-gauge - let's see, Carol doesn't need that sewing room ......

Hey, Ed! You left us "hanging" with your reference to the "Muskeg mixed" on the Trains forum (Railroads - CANADIAN PASSENGER TRAINS - Let's talk! - c'mon back!

This high speed is the cat's meow. ( Always wondered what was so special about that saying ..... ).

My remedy is quite simple and effective. Go take a train trip to anywhere - a bonafide passenger train ride. Book it NOW - do it right away! The longer the trip, the faster the time passes - trust me - that's the way "it" is. My choice is ViA Rail - great trains in mostly scenic routes. Go for it.

The second approach is to go buy something that you have always wanted (or thought you did) - get it NOW - do with it what your supposed to do - and before you know it, your loco's will arrive. Works every time. Of course, the ramifications of following this remedy are obvious. So? What's money for anyway!!??

I wondered BEFORE getting it! Baltimore? One of my favorite places - I'm not "from" there, but have lots of memories, going back into the 40's, a couple of years after WWII. I can remember diving off the piers at United Fruit into the harbor!! Don't cringe - all the kids did it, and I think it added to our longevity!!

Appears as if the cat is out of the bag (hmmmm, another cat reference - wondering WHAT in the world I'm think abut?) with the "fine establishments" reference. One would think that sailors frequent places serving the spirits. Heavens! Yes - I've been to St. Johns, Nfld so many times that I honestly cannot give you the number. We'll have to continue this dialogue in our e-mails though - wouldn't want to shock any of our RRding friends!

Oh yes - you must be referring to YOUR Coast Guard bar count. A couple of decades before your reference, MY Coast Guard opened and closed the bars located within sight of the pier - all of them!

Alas, that was then, and here we are today. Time marches on .......

Ah yes my wayward days. Actually not. I was more of a "find a quiet spot to sit and chat" kinda guy. Last time I was in St John's Iwas in refit, so I did the smart thing and got back into Mountain Biking. Saved a lot of ca***hat trip!

Phil: Sorry to hear about your fallen comrade. Far too much of this lately as respect for society is definately going down the tubes!

Well I went to the LHS and guess what? The MESS went and "Dieselized" Yes say it's not true[V] They had RDC1 on for $69 - my 10% discount. Dad bought it for me as it brought back memories. Thanks Dad! It's done in Dominion Atlantic livery, for those who have never heard of the DAR, it was a subsidiary of CP and operated solely in the Annapolis Valley of Nova Scotia. It ran between Yarmouth, Digby, Truro, and Windsor Junction with trackage rights to Halifax.

I also picked up five Accurail Wood sheathed, data only, yellow reefers for my "Fresh Fish" delivery service to all points West. I also got my 15" (scale) brass numbers for the Challenger! Pictures to follow.

Well guys kids will be home from school soon so gotta go. No. 2 son is on the mend and Lisa that my wee cold as of two days ago is just a prelude to this thing the boys have had so I'll have to drink more Java and kill it!

Good Morning clubbers, a java smoothie extra OJ for me.

Congrats to Ed and Tom for becoming 4 star generals. Thanks for all the help and encouragement. [wow][yeah][swg][swg][swg][swg][swg]

Many thanks to all the prayers for my son. He came through with flying colors, and he slept for the first time with no snoring. He also hears better. Thanks guys, this comradere is what this forum is all about. Hope everyone else whose families were having health issues came out as well as we did.

He has been running his trains quite a bit the last few days, so we are replacing the green paper with green grass. Movin' on up.

Good morning all--waking up to my usual Vienna Roast, preparing for another marathon day on the Extension (LOVE retirement!). Plan on paving the highway this morning, then jumping to the other side of the gorge and starting Sierra City (the only town on the layout--every other town is sort of 'imagined', due to my usual poor real-estate planning). I suppose I could pull out some trees somewhere and plop down some buildings, but hey, I LIKE forests! Pete was over last night as I was placing "Ma's Place" at the lip of Rock Creek Gorge, reminded me that the back door opened to a 300 foot drop-off. I just grinned. Pete looked at the building, then gave me an evil smile and asked what "Ma's Place" REALLY was. I hedged and told him a Truck Stop. He chuckled and said, "Yah, SURE!". Kid's smarter than I thought.

Fergie: OOOOPPPPS!! Fish and Game, huh? Oh well, my illegals are just tacked down with Hob-e-tac, I suppose I could move them if you insist. Heck, they've been out there since last August, anyway and haven't caught a thing. And the Yuba River's supposed to be famous for Kokonie!

TomW: I'm with you on "Bridges at Toko-Ri", it's a pretty terrific movie, isn't it? Of course, I've been a sucker for William Holden in ANYTHING since I was a kid, but that's one of the better war movies ever made IMHO.

SiberianMo: Aren't those Huskies one BEAUTIFUL dog? Had a buddy that owned one, bundle of energy and just smart as a whip! I like them. (Don't tell Spooky, okay?).

Well, time to feed the furballs. Made a dangerous discovery last night--there's room in the hidden portion of my new extension for about three staging tracks. Why don't I ever discover these things when I'm PLANNING them, for cryin' out loud? Okay--new project. (Better get the latest finished first, right? Right?--C'mon, somebody say YES! PLEASE!)
Talk to you later. Everyone have a great day.

I can well imagine how thrilled you are with your RDC1. It is especially more significant if YOU can relate to the DAR. I cannot - but am familiar with the history through the many RR books in my library.

RDC's bring back some very good memories of my train travel. I used to commute between a small town north of Boston, MA and North Station back in the late 60's. I could walk to the train station from my home and in fact, could see the crossing from my front porch. Loved those B&M RDC's.

Much later in life we took a trip by RDC up to Lilloeet, BC from N. Vancouver with BC Rail. Our train had a consist of four of 'em - yes four. The Cariboo Prospector (that's not a typo - that's the way they spelled it) - was a daily train up to Prince George. We found that a round trip could be made in the same day between the points I mentioned - so we took it. A wonderful day and another fine experience to "log" in our memory banks.

My Can-AM layout has eight operating RDC's - all from LifeLike. They are Proto 1000's - six in the VIA Rail livery and two in BC Rail's red/white/blue. My RDC's are RDC2's and 3's - no 1's. Nevertheless, each time I run the BC Rail consist of two in my mountain route - my thoughts go back to that trip to/from Lilloeet. Nice memories ......

By the way, I have some Polaroid photo's of RDC's sitting in Halifax in December 1991. We were taking a quick roundtrip to Truro (when you could still do that in one day!) and I was amazed at the number of RDC's. I found out that they were all going to be eventually sold - which many were to the folks in Dallas for their commuter system. Of course, they were what remained of the connections between Yarmouth - Halifax and Sydney. That must have been a devasting time for those who depended on those trains - let alone "train lovers."

See ya.

QUOTE: SiberianMo: Aren't those Huskies one BEAUTIFUL dog? Had a buddy that owned one, bundle of energy and just smart as a whip! I like them. (Don't tell Spooky, okay?).

In a word -yes! Juneau is grey/white/black/tan in color and has an "up" mask. He is 22 months and wears me out. Our first Husky - FRED (that should get some comments, I would think) lived for 16 years and 2 months. Great, great friend. Caution: Anyone desirous of adding a Husky to the family, be aware:

(1) They are singularly minded and love testing wills - YOURS
(2) They will run and run and run and run and ......... so keep 'em tethered or within an area they cannot escape from.
(3) They are pack animals as close to the wolf as any dog I've had - and YOU are their pack. So, what happens in the household MUST include them, or else .......
(4) They eat when they feel like it and hardly ever "scarft' their food down. Absolutely different from the Lab I had.

By the way, your secret is good with me - Spooky won't hear it from this dog lover.

Just popping in real quick for lunch with this warning for cat lovers. Fresh from FOX news.com under the heading "Michigan cat shoots owner"

BATES TOWNSHIP, Mich. — A man cooking in his kitchen was shot after one of his cats knocked his 9mm handgun onto the floor, discharging the weapon, Michigan State Police (search) said.

Was this really an 'accident'? I think not. Cat Tom, beware![:O]

Good Day Coffee Club!

Got a lot of catching up to do here, (all the way back to page 330) almost a week since my last post in the forum! So gonna try the streamlined version for responses!

Welcome to all the new folks! Including Spooky the female feline!

I noticed a few posts on the rise in gas prices, I filled up at the Exxon for $1.84 / gal regular unleaded. Just last week it was at $1.74.

The campout was a blast, the weather was perfect, clear skies and cool temps during the day. Night time temps were a bit low for camping, but we slept through it fine! The boys got to shoot BB Guns, Archery with Bows and Arrows, Canoeing the lake, played a flag football game, run the ropes course, and did a lot of hiking.

The campers stew came out good, a few of the boys did not put enough ingredients in their pouch and they burned up, but we had other stuff for them to eat, so all was not lost. All in all it was a relaxing time, the smores were great and campfire stories were wild!

brclem,
Great of you to provide access for meeting the requirements of the Railroading Merit Badge, the Boy Scouts needs more volunteers like you!

Fergie,
Never tried the BBQ sauce on it, but a few people did asked for ketchup! You are so right, it never tastes the same when prepared at home.

Roasted Chicken with Wild Rice Medly, YUM!!! Save some for us!!!

Jim,
The Crawfish dish did have some kick to it! Keeps you warm in the cold night though! I made it to Star too, only was three merit badges away from making Eagle, and moved to an Explorer Post and lost interest. One of the few regrets I have in my life is not making Eagle Scout!

siberianmo,
Great stories from the OA and the train ride! Yes, fond memories of Boy Scout summer camp and the "Blast from the Past" factor gets kickin in too. I remember our Troop won a watermelon for coming in first place in the "Critter Crawl" race contest. We had found this huge grasshopper, and it out ran the competition.

Tom,
Talk about sleeping past 9 hours, Sunday night after returning from the campout we all crashed around 8:00 pm and slept until 6:00 am Monday, thats about 10 hours, boy were we wiped out!

Flip,
Crafts are fun to make! We made a Cub Scout 75th anniversery bead necklace at the campout on Saturday. How is Deb feeling?

John der5997,
Great progress on the layout! I wish I had the time like you have to devote to the hobby, been too busy to much of anything MR wise the past few weeks.

Ed,
Thanks for the tips and tricks with posting in the forum, I know many are thankful for the
continued support!

Tim,
Our prayers are with you and the family! Tubes in the ears are quite common among young children, both of our sons had them put in, and they were removed within a few years or they grew out of them. Glad to hear the surgery came out ok and he is breathing well again.

You all have a great day!

Good morning all!

I was hoping for a day off and get some train stuff done but not a chance. Both Gloe and I started the day with MD appointment. Gloe is progressing well, doc keeps adding to my meds.... I'll tell you, the local drug store is making a fortune out my insurances and me...

Now, Gloe has a list of stuff for me to do....

Fergie - sent you an email via forum.

Hope to be back later

Good news. Yeah it helped me hear better too. Unfortunately it did nothing to help my snoring. [(-D] [zzz]

Wow that's something you don't hear everyday. One has to ask why he had the loaded 9mm in plane site if the cat! Tim great news about your son,I had a cousin who had similar problems when he was nine.He came through with flying colours and has had no further problems(he's 30 now)A question for Fergie is the crowsnest bar still operating inSt john's,the last time I was out there(10 years ago it was) and it still had the corvette gun shield art and crests from the escort groups on the wall.I know it was a "navy" bar but I was just wondering. Later folks Rob.

Evening all

That's an odd one about the cat - mind you, anyone else heard the old theory that they only live with us because paws aren't too good at opening food tins?[:D] Have heard about a dog in a similar situation - managed to discharge a loaded shotgun at its owner. Police were alerted by the mournful howling noises from the dog.

Well, my essay is finished and will be handed in tomorrow (official deadline is 2:30PM on Monday 14th, so I'll be beating the rush!). Also my assorted parts packages are on the way. First one turned up this morning and all parts have been fitted, second has been dispatched. Will post a picture or two of the little boxcab electric I'm rebuilding using the second batch of parts - cute little thing, now available in blue and white paintwork though mine's green (earlier model). Also on the way are another two sets of LGB metal wheels - slowly working through the collection and fitting these, they do help keep the track cleaner and they sound much nicer too!

Bye for now

Good afternoon, I’ve been away for most of the day, but have had time to zip through a few pages. [:D]

Sweet! Love those colours. BTW, That’s what I mean about the abrupt Town/Country divide of the northern landscape…no apparent “burbs”. BTW2 Do they still have "wakes week" in Lancashire mill towns? Do they still have mill towns?

How about ripping the 2x4 to 2x2? ( Tubideux? [(-D]) That’s all I used in Spruce Grove, and it held up fine. I’ll post a pic of the planning model if you want to see the distribution pattern.
Spooky:[#welcome] Nice of you to drop by. If you ask Zoe nicely, she will come across with a saucer of the 18% cream I brought in for my coffee[:D]
Dinner time, and the end of page 342! TTFN.

Hello, just passing by and my human left the computer on while he went to use the euphamism (that kitty-litter box that flushes) and I came across this little tidbit: I'm very sorry for what happened to the man, I sincerely hope his wound is not serious but next time he's cooking, he should feed the cat first. After all, it's in our Contract. Tom just went out into the garage again, muttering something about having an electrical problem with the Sinohara turnouts he's got installed in his new return loop. Something about a 'short', whatever that is (I'm sorry, I don't do electricity, just those 'cabeese' he's always accusing me of). He was mentioning something about possibly getting a brand named Peek-O (am I spelling that correctly?) with an insulated Frog. I don't understand any of it--I mean, how can a Frog be 'Insulated?' They don't have any fur!! Well, I'll let him tell you all about it when he comes back in. I have to go whack at the door anyway, my Chef's Blend bowl is WAY down below Refill Level.
Have a nice day, gentlemen--and Der, how nice of you and Zoe--that 18% cream is just what I need to keep my fur glistening.

Hey all, a large coke and ice please..... Hey Turbo, glad to hear all it well, those "little" operations are still stressful...

Last night saw another trip to JJ's last night to buy supplies, 5 more turnouts and some roadbed (Trackrite)....that cut a hole in $150.00... but I have a confessionto make , I was unfaithful..... on the way home from work I stopped at another model shop (which I didnt know existed), found they had the largest range of MR stuff I have ever seen and I bought stuff.....

I know, bad bad Grubby, but they had a New River Mining and I needed it [:P] and a heap of MR back issues and an April that came in that day... they all came home with me.....wow that was a crazy MR day but now I can really make some progress on the revised layout (just got another little 8'x4' extension) and maybe even lay some track this weekend. [:D]

Well I hope Jim from JJ's doesn't find out about my other adventure [:P]

Off to work now, catch you all later
