HI all-
boy, take a day off and look what happens!
Went down to Seattle yesterday. Woke up to a rare dusting of snow up here on the island - mostly gone now though. Also had loads of fun getting the truck pulled out of some mud - AAA pays for itself again! I had to attend a function friday and there were no more parking spots, and because of all the rain for the last few weeks the field we always use turned into mud. Oops!!! But the tow truck that pulled me out was pretty cool. LIke a big Tonka Truck!

Good Afternoon Coffee Clubbers,

Missed posting yesterday. We were out and about and by the time I got back I got sucked into watching the Jets squeak by the Chargers.

Weather continues very nice down here. Sunshine, some scattered clouds, temperature around the low 80’s. [8D]

We took junior and two of the nieces to visit a local (1-1/2 hour drive) archeological zone (ruins) called El Tajin. A lot of you may not be aware (I sure wasn’t until I started working down here) that Mexico has a huge number of archeological zones with remnants of large stone temples (mostly pyramidal in form) dating back to the indigenous cultures in prehispanic time. The majority of what can be seen was constructed between 200 B.C. through 1500 A.D. The arrival of Cortez in 1521 and the quick conquest of the area put an end to that. The only thing even remotely similar north of the border would be some of the structures of the classic Puebloan sites in the southwest, such as Mesa Verde, although they really don’t compare.

El Tajin is, in my mind, among the top ten sites in the country. There are around 176 known structures, of which about 40 have been uncovered and at least partially reconstructed. El Tajin was a ceremonial center for the Totonaca culture, and flourished between 200 A.D. and 1250 A.D. Most of the websites with info on El Tajin that I could find are in Spanish, but if you have any interest in seeing some of the buildings, you can go to the following link which has one photo of the most important structure, and an aerial view of part of the zone.

http://www.laregion.com.mx/veracruz/especiales/cultura/tajin/cultura.php

Anyway, enough of the history lesson. On to catching up on posts.

Congrats to C.G.Jim and Rob on his their first stars and to fec on his big 500. Haven’t seen the CPP (Correctness in Posting Police) out in a while so I guess it’s safe to congratulate you guys.

QUOTE: Turbo: Then I asked how long it would take if I took my trolley and ran it at full speed. The answer was that will get you kicked out of the club.
Definite lack of sense of humor there. [:0]

btw Tim, welcome to the group of us that are now cheering for our alternate choice teams while watching the playoffs. Are the Chargers going to look for a new placekicker during the offseason? [:p]

QUOTE: Fergie: The 2-8-0 is out of commission for a week…
Tell me about it. Mine is out of commission for a few months. I sent it back to Bachmann’s service dept to correct the out of guage wheels. Since I didn’t want to even try to have them mail it back to me down here, I had them send it on to my daughter’s house to hold for me. I won’t be up there until April, so it’s just sitting there, waiting for me, unused, unloved, dusty, neglected, in a corner…… I can hardly stand it……. [:(]

QUOTE: grayfox: I was content to let it melt on the driveway, but she was afraid of icing overnight.
I made that mistake once. Once was enough. It halfway melted, and when it was good and soaked with water it froze solid. I chopped on that stuff for days trying to get it off.

QUOTE: Rob: I work for the giraffe…
Continuing with my string of stupid questions, what is the giraffe? [?]

QUOTE: Teffy: I had a good time "testing track" today. Ed may get way ahead of me as I keep getting distracted from construction…
Not to worry Bob, I’m suffering from “Terminal Mañana Syndrome” down here. [|)]

QUOTE: Cape Girardeau Jim: Ed, good to hear from you again. Thought you were gone on vacation…
Permanent vacation Jim, retired.

Whew. That’s at least got me caught up to last night. Think I’m going to have myself an adult beverage (probably fresh orange juice with some Bacardi Solera added) and take a break. I’ll be back.

Hasta luego,

Ed

Paul, I only snow blow when it gets over two inches, like with the storm we had. Other than that I get the shovel out. And yeah, you did mention you were born in Milwaukee. I haven't been to Little A Merrick A in years, but I was there once when i was about 4. I barely remember it.

Jim, nope, your confusing my with Scott,(train Freak) I think. I enter the working world this up comming summer I hope, I hope to start bussing tables somewhere. Then I can really earn some money. BTW, congrats on the star.

Luct, don't worry, I wouldn't forget this shop even if I won the lottery, I love this place.

JP, I like the delta cream coat stuff for cheap paint, it works good enough. It's water based too, good for clean up. Cream coat is also foam compatible, works for me.

Boy, I leave for my usual day, and you guys shoot two whole pages on me! It's rare to do that just between my usual posts.

Well, I'm very happy today. I went down to Madison, and went to what my local division of the NMRA calls a "rail school" it was about different aspects of modeling, and I learned some good things. Namely weathering with chalks, a cheap way to make hills of forests, and about some decaling. I also got a few MR and trains mags and alendars. Also a free Undecorated Athearn hopper that I know what I want to paint it for already. So, all in all, I'm happy.

I also learned that a new HO track club will be opening about 50 miles from me, in Madison, and I am considering joining. I think it would be fun to build a module for shows with my Dad, and I could show off my work to people other than my family. I'm still considering it though, as it will involve a considerable moola investment for the scenery, and will take away from my layout some. Well, I guess I'll leave you all till tomorrow, I just hope you don't shoot two whole pages on me again!

Evening All

I don't know about everyone else but I find it very hard to keep up with the shop these days. [:(]

Ed [8D]

After the henweigh you still ask? [;)] Well, I guess someone has to take the bait. [:)] Sorry the Red Sox spoof can't get to you. [:(]

Yes it is Scott, Trainfreak, who works at Purkey's Toy Trains in Sykesville, MD. (Did I remember all that, heck no, Scott sent me a business card. lol [;)] )

Well the sun came out for about all of 2 minutes today. It starting raining on January 1, 2005, and has rained or been cloudy here ever since. [:(] [:(]

Well Mitchell drew a special drawing for me and emailed it to me. It is a Frisco RSD15. Yes, I know the real Frisco never had an RSD15 but MY Frisco will. [:D]

Well so much for the weekend. Work tomorrow night will start the new workweek and I must attend. [;)] [:0]

Noah [:)]

You can buss my table. [;)] The first REAL job I ever had was bussing tables. Mowing lawns and hauling hay really doesn't count in my book, but hauling hay is hard work. And no I am not talking about using a tractor with a fork for round bales. We had the old fashioned "square" (but really not square) bales. I sure hated hauling them too.

Welcome to all the new posters.

Congrats for those with new stars. (shhhh, the star police might be listening.)

Well time to go.

Have a good night's sleep and get a good start on the week. [:)]

Good Evening Coffee Clubbers,

Okay, big effort to catch up on posts here. I’d like to at least start out the week only being behind the number of posts you night owls put up tonight.

By the way, in case any of you guys want to see what a tree loaded with oranges looks like, here you go. I think we really need to do some serious pruning after this season. The first shot is our Blazer loaded with oranges. The second is my M-I-L under one of the trees.

While the FCVN and the local growers would love to expand their market further north, I expect that Florida has the market pretty well sewed up in the eastern half of the country. You probably need to be talking to the FEC (thru fec).

QUOTE: Luc: we now have the sunshine, thanks - now how about the heat to go with it?
If we could only figure out a way to store up some of the excess we are “blessed” with during the summer, I’d be more than happy to send some your way. But I think that it’s probably uneconomical to do so. And I’m not even sure that the FCVN’s rolling stock is fit for interchange service.

Congrats on getting a website set up for your road. I should be so energetic!!

Wow!! I’m speechless. How far do you live from the closest spur where one could be delivered? What are your plans when you get one? Restore? Display? Put a layout in it? Btw, welcome to the forum. Okay, we could use a TT modeler here, just to help us round out the group.

You should be, sounds like a good afternoon and you wound up with a free car to boot!!! Glad to see that you’re taking advantage of that NMRA membership.

Sorry about the Pack.

I agree that building one with your dad would be a good investment of your time. I wouldn’t think that you’d have to spend an arm and a leg to scenic a module, but wdik. While it would take time from the main layout, there’s also a lot to be gained by doing it.

Noah; A snow blower would be overkill on 2 inches. When I was doing that thing we couldn't afford a blower. That and the fact that we didn't have enough area to warrant it. When I got old enough to drive I got a 47' CJ-2 Jeep with a plow. Then I could take on the big jobs. It's been several years since I've been to Little A-Merrick- A. I meet the owner, Lee Merrick, Derral Klompmaker the manager. Derral built a 15 inch gauge 4-6-2 from scratch. Now that's modeling.

Tom; My doctor told me about that stuff. I'm going to give it a try. I've been in contact with some folks in Frostbit falls Min. Seems that they have some Upsedaisyum. I'll get some and give that a try on the layout.

There are some more posts that I should answere, but for the life of me I can't remember what there are. I guess I should print out the pages. Anyway, I've got the main line torn up at Huron Bay Jct. I'm redoing it to accomidate the line to Port Huron Bay. As soon as the jct is in and usable I'll have to test it thourally.

Today was beautiful. Low 70s and sunny. I spent the afternoon plowing that 15 acres next door. The ground is perfect for plowing and it is going very fast and smooth. Mary Ann picked pecans all after noon. She found a honey hole in the ditch along a fence line. The rain had washed a bunch of nuts down to one point. She got a full bucket and didn't have to move more than a few feet.

Well I'm off to bed. Got to go to work in the AM.

Hey you all, how is it going ?

Trolley Boy I've got a pic for you but cant seem to import it into this. I use the above button for image, and then the typical cut and paste doesn't work. Need a helpful train hand I guess.

EG Yes my Chargers are gone and I am still excited. We have 24 million under the salary cap, and thanks to the Giants we have pick 12 and our 28 in the first round. We were rooting for that last Giant loss, then our pick would have been #4. Also love the blazer and oranges pic.

To all the cough is almost gone, vitamins win again. Out in the freezing garage and cleaning some track for a small gandy dancer circle.

As most of us prepare for bed I just wanted to leave this link. When the 3985 came to North Little Rock back in the early summer / late spring I was able to get some pretty good photos of it.

Here is a link to a thread where I talked about it and other people added their comments also.

If you would like to post a comment in that thread or at the website please do.

Thanks everyone. [:)]

Good Morning All:

I started a Suydam "Standard Station" yesterday afternoon. I don't know if I'll get it done as after about two hours of working on it, I lost interest. I need three more stations so that means that I'll have to do something. It took me better then 30 years to build that campbell trestle, I sure hope I get this station done faster then that.

Is the Giraffe that we're talking about, Jeffery from Toys "R" Us?

Ed:
Glad to see you've come back. Fresh orange juice used to be a favorite of mine but now I can't even smell it as it makes the blood sugar go askew.

JP:
I like to do the painting and staining before construction as it's easier to keep the paint separeted. That's what I was doing on the station and got bored. You do have to be a little carefull as you don't want a lot of paint or stain were the glue is going to go.

I don't know what kind of applicator, for the plastic glue, that you are using but I have several A-West needlepoint applicator bottles with the 4" needle. They are realy good at getting the glue in the joints of the buildings. You don't have to keep going back to the solvent bottle for a "brush full" of solvent. Some people I know use a paint brush but I've never tried that.

Fergie:
I feel sorry about you having to go back to work. POOR BABY I'm assuming that I'll get a package from Loy's today? Did you find the other decoder on your "trash dive"?

SNoah:
How is the Silver Streak car comming along?

Well I've got to get some clothes folded before work, so ya'll have a blessed day and remember SANTA FE ALL THE WAY

Good Morning Coffee Clubbers,

Anyone want some fresh orange juice with their morning coffee? (Sorry Teffy) Okay guys, keep those glasses of OJ downwind from Bob!

You guys were a quiet lot last night. Everyone must have been in mourning for the Packers. I was surprised to see how few posts were made after my last one.

QUOTE: Trolleyboy: Also is there anyway of getting easier to use smilies or maybe some one can mail me a list of how to program them because I keep having to edit my posts because my two finger typing skills just don't get it.
Tell me a bit more about what problem you are having with smileys. One thing to keep in mind is that if you are using the Quick Reply window, clicking on a smiley will put its symbol at the end of the post. If you’re trying to edit a post while in the quick reply window and want to insert a smiley in the middle, you have to ‘cut and paste’ it to where you want it to be. If you are in the more formal ‘Reply to Topic’ window, the smiley will show up wherever the cursor is. That’s one difference.

One other tip is that before posting your reply, use the “Preview Reply” button. That way you get to see the spacing and all the smileys you inserted. If you want to change something you just close the preview window and make the changes in the reply window before posting it. Saves going back and editing.

Likewise. I actually really enjoyed snow shoveling. But then again, I liked anything to do with being out in the snow (well, maybe except driving.)

Okay, question one is “do you have the picture hosted on a website, or just on your computer’s hard drive?” If you do have it on a website, you might try manually putting the image tags on it in the post. Just type in immediately after the address. Note that you have to leave out the space between the brackets. I put it in just show it would show up instead of thinking that what I typed in between was a photo address.

If you just have the photos on your computer, then the first step is opening an account with one of the photo hosting places, like RailImages.

Let me know and we can try work through your problem.

Nice signature photo, LVR!

Okay, did my part to keep us from falling too far down the page. Catch you guys this afternoon.

Hasta luego,

Looks like you scooped everyone this morning Ed!!! Thanks for the orange juice on the table and hot coffee too, and those honey dipped doughnuts were out of this world.

I had to go to the dentist[V]this morning for quarterly cleaning, those high pressure water picks can really do the job but can be very uncomfortable too.

After lunch , gee that's now!!! I'm headed downstairs to start constructing the train room wall studding. Then the insulation, electrical rough wiring, sheetrock (plasterboard), thincoat, final electrical, suspended ceiling and lighting, THEN .....I can start on the benchwork...YEEEESSSSSSSS!!!

See ya later guys, keep the coffee hot for afternoon break,

Hey Noah-
That school by your local NMRA sounds great. Wish I'd have found that when i was younger! And definitely jump at the chance to do some layout work with your dad. You'll be glad you did! My dad and I worked together on some of my high school (and earlier!) layouts and we both treasure the memories - hopefully we'll be able to work together on one again soon!

Mitchell [:)]

Got the RSD15, looks good. Now for those of you who say Frisco never had an RSD15, you are correct. BUT MY Frisco will have RSD15s. [;)]

Got the other drawing too. The LeggWood is an interesting loco. Double ended locos were neve the norm in American. I know some parts of the world had / have them but they just didn't catch on here. Not sure how many railroads actually had doubled ended locos other than the Little Joes. I am not real familiar with the east coast electrics, some of them might be, but don't quote me on that one.

As for modeling the Frisco in an " L " shape, well Springfield, Missouri became the center of the Frisco as the diesel shops, repair shops, and main headquarters were all in Springfield. St. Louis at one point had the headquarters and Frisco Hospital but as far as I know the hospital was closed or sold and the headquarters was moved to Springfield. I read an article once that stated that every road diesel on the Frisco made it to Springfield in any given 24 hour period. That may or may not be true, Frisco was an " X " railroad with various other lines crossing the legs of the X in places. There were places like St. Louis and Memphis where the tracks did not go through Springfield. Frisco did not have a direct route from St. Louis to Kansas City either, all Kansas City traffic on the Frisco went through Springfield, and vice versa. Yes, that was definately a long way around but that is how it worked.

Frisco had a long and interesting history but wound up in bankruptcy several times. At one time Frisco had control of the C & E I, which gave Frisco entry into Chicago. During one of the bankruptcy periods the C & E I was taken away from Frisco. This was in the early 1900 but might have been a MAJOR turning point against the Frisco. Since Chicago was and is the major railroad city in the United States the loss of trackage into Chicago was a serious blow to the fortunes of the Frisco. Every time Frisco entered bankruptcy parts of its system were stripped away and given to other railroad or reverted to the old railroad. Many railroads enter and emerged from bankruptcy during the 1900s.

Any modeling attempt, in my opinion, must include Springfield. An L layout could have a St. Louis to Kansas City line, remember going through Springfield. A line from Dallas/Ft. Worth to Tulsa to Springfield could stop at Springfield or continue to St. Louis. There are other possibilities depending on space and interest. But of course you can definately see that Springfield is my point of interest. [;)]

Well it is sooooooooo foggy here that I cannot see the end of the street. [:0] The temps are going up though. Still no sun and rain predicted for the next 3 days. [:(] [:(!] [:(]

BUT the good news is no ice and no snow. [:D]

Well time to do other things as I have to go to work this afternoon. [:(] [:)] [:(] [:)] That is definately a mixed bag of blessings. [;)] Know what I mean Vern? [;)]

See everyone later. [:o)] [:I] [^]

Morning/afternoon all.

Ed, I'll take a BIG glass of fresh OJ.

Guy's soak up the warmth all you can, the weatherman here in my area says later this week it could be in the teens here at my place, and I live in East Texas. It seems you northerner's just can't keep the gate closed, can ya. You don't see us southerner's opening our gate, and letting our hot weather up your ways, do ya, [#dots] now that I think about it, we do. Ok, who left the gates open?[?] Just kidding guys.

gonna go, see you all later

Can you wait until you've got the paint so as to be able to paint the walls, roof, etc before cutting them free? That way the painting is much easier than trying to do it when the model is all built up.

DerJohn - I discovered that I actually need to get one of those 'right angle' clamps before I attempt to build Carnegie St Mfg now. Paint will come sooner than the angle clamp!

Here's another q for all of the 'professionals' out there... Do all the Atlas and LL kist come w/ bases? Or is it just certain ones?
Since I ran into the problem of not having the 'angle' clamp so I can build Carnegie St Mfg, I started building the Lumber Co. kit that Atlas has. Since I live near a company called 84 Lumber, and they have a few buildings on their property that look almost like the Atlas Lumber Co. kit, and the local 84 Lumber store (back of store property borders CSX's DeWitt Yard) gets shipments via CSX from time to time, I figured it would be a good bldg to have on my layout. I may even opt to getting a 2nd one so I can have a good sized lumber dealer. I wish someone would make a Home Depot store. That would take up some room as well, but they don't get shipments via rail here.
Take care...

Good afternoon people: Bob, I know what you mean about OJ shoving up the blood sugar. sorry Ed, but I'll have to pass too[V]

QUOTE: You guys were a quiet lot last night. Everyone must have been in mourning for the Packers. I was surprised to see how few posts were made after my last one.
I was too tense waiting to see if I was going to incurr the wrath of Big_Girl should the GBPs have gone on. The thing I was counting on was that they had the least wins in regular season out of the division leaders (if that's the right term - please don't bother with the corrections, folks as IRCCL[(-D]) Seems I had picked that about right. [^]
Actually, what kept us downstairs at the TV was a Fawlty Towers marathon on BBC Canada. Our satellite TV provider is using January for a promo of new to you channels. Can't say there's anything we've seen yet that we would actually want to pay for.[(-D]

Tom: How long can pecans stay wet in a ditch without the quality being affected? Also, is there an outer shell before that red one - sort of like walnuts?
Speaking of walnuts, we once lived in an older home with a large walnut tree outside. The squirrels (remember the squirrels?[(-D]) used to get them into the roof space and play football with them up and down all night! (That's what was the UC Manse in Conn, Ont.,TrolleyRob, if you are curious)

Perhaps time tomorrow for a trip to the LHS. My M-I-L has an appointment with the dentist. We can't get her into the office in Sheet Harbour, as she doesn't do stairs, and there is no ramp. Kris backed the van up the landscaping to the door last time, but there's too much snow there now for that [:D] So this Dr. is in Dartmouth, and we will see how that goes.

Time for non-virtual tea. Thanks for the cuppa here, and the remians of the Christmas cake in that tin on the shelf over the counter was grand! [C=:-)]

Teffy, it’s next in line on my work bench, once I get this darn building out of the way. I haven’t had much time to work lately, but I hope to tonight, as I don’t have much homework.

Well, I don’t have much else, except a pile of cars to be test run on my track, a building to work on, and a little homework. I guess I better keep moving.

Hey, I got to looking around the Athearn Website, and I think I found the ARK Flag ship car.

http://www.athearn.com/Product/Zoom.aspx?ProdID=ATH92181

Just change the logo and road name, and Volia! You have the Ark Flag ship car! I'm also working on the three Cities, I think I found the R and the K. I know the A will be Appleton, but I'm, still working on the others.
