Hi again all. Der; I'm not sure what was up with the solderer(not sure that's a word but looks good anyway)[8D] it would work for a few seconds then shut off I exchaanged it and the new one did the same thing[xx(][xx(] so I decided twice bitten didn't want to go for round three and the TKO[B)][B)][xx(] I managed to get another three pieces of flex down as well as a switch then I broke my last three cut off discs[censored][xx(] my luck has not been good lately with the tools so I quit before I loose a finger. Guess I'll be going to sears for another bottle of cutting discs[sigh] Oh well at least I can test out all the loco's I have. *** do some research don't take my word only on those solderer's(nope probably not a word but oh well spellings never been my strong suit) Speaking of strong need to get me a cuppa. I had a strange problem the last few days with everything from lightbulbs blowing out to TV acting strange, to power packs misbehaving. Then as I was on my computer, the answer became clear. I suddenly realized that the fan was speeding up and down . I happen to have an old RCA Power Monitor for line voltage sitting on a shelf above the computer, and I noticed that it was reading 128 volts, and occasionally hit 130V. This is NOT good, and explained all the strange happenings lately. I called the local utility Co. and withing 15 minutes there was a yellow Mass Electric truck parked in front of the house. He checked the power at the entrance meter and said," sure enough, 128 volts on both legs, not good". Apparently during the last snow storm, a transformer had to be replaced as a result of an auto accident, and the they used a tap too high for the area. This is something that no one ever checks at home. I just happen to have the power monitor always plugged in on the shelf.
If you guys ever have symtoms such as these, or other strange electrical behavior, check your line voltage.
Were back to 118-120V now and all is well once again!!

Time to hit the sack, 11:14pm, I'll clean out the coffee pot for the west coast guys,

We are enjoying the football game. USC winning 48-10 so far. Just received the MRC sound station 312 from a great friend. It is awesome. My son is driving the wife nuts with all the loco sounds. He is running Thomas and all the gang from Soder, and pushing buttons. Thank You Friend.

This is a the best idea, having worldwide train people helping other train people. And the coffee shop, even without the expresso machine is always brewin'.

der- As I recall, the folks advertising the Egg Scrambler ("scrambles the egg in the shell!!!") and the Mug Froster ("An ice cold frosty mug everytime!!") also said they were indispensable kitchen tools.
I have heard that the Cold Heat iron just dosn't get hot enough for soldering track, it heats up to 800F, and (I know I'll be corrected on this) you need 1000F or more to effectively solder HO track. It might be good for N, but I don't know.
Krump- I missed you, I even said it was great to have you back. You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars, you have a right to be here....cool dude.
Checked out a brand new Lumber Yard in Portland today, looks like it has all a MR'er would need, and more. Our last yard closed about 4 years ago, since then it's been a major hassle trying to sneak back home with illegal loads sticking out here and there, the G Chero looks more like a deranged porcupine waddleing down the road than the mean off-road demon that it really is. Now it can all be done only 6 miles from home!
And I need to say thanks to someone, but I don't remember who, for mentioning that they picked up 2 Kalmbach Specialty mags from Amazon for a decent price. I ordered Industries Along the Track and Building City Scenery and saved about 40%. Whoever you are, thanks for the heads up. Oh, and the mags are great.
And put Lawrence and me down as 2 more under the rain, but it looks like he's gonna get more ice from this than we are. Hope all keep their power, and stay safe on the roads. Looks like the whole country is getting something. Sorry Ed ,Ferg, and Krump (and all the rest)- the whole continent. I forget sometimes about our international membership!

I received an instant message from Henry in Kansas about 130 am. Kansas is getting hit by the ice storm too. He told me that they let his school out about 1 pm and school is cancelled for Wednesday. It would not surprise me if school was cancelled the rest of this week as ice storms can cause major damage and take a while to clean up.

You all be extra careful when walking on ice as a fall could break a bone.

And speaking of bones . . . I do have a doctor's appointment Wednesday for my arm. It is painful and swollen, and any pressure really smarts. [:(]

Now for a little nicer news, a friend emailed me a link to a really nice website that many of you will enjoy. An ex-marine on fixed income is doing this site. It is worth a trip to see it. (But don't forget to vote on Mitchell's site. [;)] ) The site is very nice and you will probally want to share it with your family and friends. Here is a link to it.

Today is beautiful day in the swamp, we haven't seen the sun in four days but we've got it today. Maybe some of the water on the ground will disapear.

We had four squirrles in our bird feeder. So far in the last three months I've picked off 14 squirrles. My son left his pellet rifle her and that's what I've been using. No, I don't eat squirrles.

Since you said that Soundtraxx was closed I didn't even try to call. I assume that you have already mailed the decoder to them since that's what Fred said to do. Why wait for next Monday to mail it, because it just delays the fix. I'm truly sorry about the sound as all of them that I've bought have had good sound. It'll give you time to get the speaker box built.

I agree with Phil, it's not going to solder anything that requires a lot of heat. I think that it's a waste of money. It's probably a good item if you worked on decoders and didn't want to burn the carpet or your leg. (Does anyone come to mind?) There was a thread on this item if you want to go back and look for it, most of the comments from purchasers was negative.

I use the cut-off disc if I'm cutting rail that is already in place and can't be moved. If I'm cutting track just to make it even, I use Dremel part #426. This is a cut-off wheel, "reinforced with fiberglass", it's very strong and doesn't break as easy, but it does leave a W I D E gap. Don't tell Fergie about this item as it would probably do him in.

Your car is on the way, I bet you thought that I forgot. Notice that it has new trucks, couplers, and floor. The body can be polished up with toothpaste and a toothbrush. I cleaned a bunch of the cars up and ordered new parts and finally moved on to another project when I got one train running. I don't like how the trucks are stiff and the talgo couplers. After I moved to another project I never got back to these cars. I ran out of screws to hold the ends on so you'll have to get some fron the LHS.

Thanks for the Cold Heat info, i understand how it would be a problem at 800 degrees trying to solder anything that actsas a heat sink, be it HO or N rail. Fine for small wiring jobs perhaps. But, at nearly the price of a decoder, ...............

Seems a waste then [:D] We live trap ours, and take them off the island. Mind you, there are those mainlanders who bring theor trapped squirrles to the island, so the balance of nature is preserved![(-D] Last year we didn't have to trap any, as they were suspiciously absent from the feeder. Their place has been taken by crows and pheasants. The latter are way messy. I'm going to have to power wa***he deck when it gets warmer.

Good Morning You all, a quick note before work. It is wet here in SoCal, our USC just whomped O U and the Chargers are going to do the same to the Jets on Saturday.

It is so cold for us southern CAs, low 30s, that I am running trains on my sons ez track in the living room. He has his wooden Thomas building all around the track, and with the new to us MRC 312 we are having a train bonanza.

Der, I believe you are correct on the soldering temp, the rails are too much of a heat sink for 800 degrees.

Bob, we "had" a problem with squirrels in/on our bird feeders until this season. We purchased a new type that has 3 metal perches attached to the bottom of the feeder. The birds don't have enough weight to trip the mechanism, but the pesky squirrels get the ride of their lives. It trips the spill and kick off and sends them spinning off the perch, they get so damn dizzy they can't walk straight, and we are on the floor roaring, NO MORE SQUIRRELS!!!

Time to get back to work on new room, keep the coffee hot till later,

Der John: Popped into to George's on the way home to pick up wheels and Kid’s. He had some used Non-existent scale stuff for sale, included were two CN F-7s. Asking price $85 each but in mint condition. Also included was a set of Pennsy passenger cars.

Now Bob and ***: Leave the poor critters be! I like the little guys. The way to keep them out of the feeders is "Rat Guards". If you have the feeder mounted on a pole then you fit a large funnel shaped cowl on it and the squirrels are unable to get around it.

I'll have a Coffee Coke deep fried. I'm going on a diet but I can still have drinks so the tubbiness will stay. It's a fine 10:22am here in overcast Darwin and the cars are going past our front gate and making to much bleeting noise. Recently GDRMB has started construction of a plant in Dartmouth, HRM, Nova Scotia. The new AC30000DDW-10s will be constructed there by GE under contract from GDRMB. The new locomotives are the next step up from the 9s and have a better power delivery system which puts more of the 30000hp down to the rails. Well I gotta go Mums up and I'll soon be kicked off.
