Good day all! Took Ben to the doctor this morning, he is on two new medications and should be back to school on Monday. He is finally holding down food and starting to feel better.

Thanks for all who sent thoughts and prayers! They really do work!

Monique is getting better, but still has a fight with this sinus infection, and at least she was not up in the middle of the night with a coughing attack last night!

Got the September 2006 MR issue in the mail yesterday, there is a Layout Planning Contest, and the first prize is $1,000.00. Looks like it could be fun!

Glad to see everyone has rated and voted for the Coffee Shop! You can see the star rating on the main Model Railroader General Discussion area.

And yes, Der John, that is the rating I was speaking about.

Dick, yep grandma was right! And the old saying “an apple a day keeps the doctor away” has a lot of truth to it as well. Most likely it was another way of saying to eat your fresh fruit and fresh vegetables too! I made a blueberry smoothie last night with about a cup of the berries, 2 tbsp honey, and a large glass of crushed ice and about a cup of filtered water. Blended until smooth and drank it up quick! Yum!

Also, thanks for the gasoline $$$ breakdown! Seems like the government could give us all some gasoline tax breaks and reduce or eliminate that for awhile.

Hey Inch, smoked corn sounds interesting. Never had that one before and I love to smoke all kinds of food stuffs, but never thought about corn. Now I have rolled up corn in the husk and put it directly on coals and that is spectacular flavor!

PC, good luck and best wishes and prayers for the kids and your wife with the doc visit and meds changes!

I was able to see and hear a lot more about the CVN21 next generation aircraft carrier.  Basically the same platform as the Nimitz class of today, but built for today's threats and with much newer technology, with a planned 50yr life (as are our existing carriers), using more innovative and cost-effective modern technolgy to fabricate and construct.

If the CVN21 gets funded, the first hull will replace the USS Enterprise.  Kind of sad to hear that, for me, as I vividly remember first seeing this ship in the mid 60's in California with my Dad, from his "tiny" AR-9 USS Delta repair ship.

Also saw the USS George H Bush under construction.  Wow!  All I can say to summarize that.  If you've never seen a large ship under construction, it totally floors you when you get a first look...and if you've seen it before, you still marvel at what we can do with men and steel.  Amazing.  Nobody else can do it like we do...nobody.

Glad to be back.  Tired, but gotta drag myself in to do something productive today.

IndySon, I know what you mean about the size of those ships as they go up! When we lived in New Orleans, the Northrop Grumman ship yards (formally Avondale Ship yards) were close by and they had many contracts with the Navy. I remember driving buy many times and as they are being built they just keep getting higher and higher, just amazing! I also had the pleasure of working on a research vessel during the summer of 1987 and we were working out of Groton, CT for a few weeks, docked next to the Trident subs that were being built. Same thing, these were massive multiple storied vessels. Just amazing! An underwater mobile city when completed!

Thanks again to all who included us in your prayers!

Cheers,

Hi Gang: It’s going to be hot again today. We’ll be heading for the air port to pick up the kids in a couple of hours. I might not be in tomorrow but will be back Sunday. The kids leave for Albuquerque Sunday morning and the computer room will be ours again.Sad [:(]

Dick: The dog question may be moot. I turned the cows into a field this morning and they just looked and turned around and came back out. There isn’t any grass left. We have a choice to sell them off, feed them at very high prices, or turn them into the hay fields across the railroad. The badlands are almost here.Sad [:(] Of course all the city folks who moved out here have nice green lawns. The wells maybe going dry but they are going to have there green lawns. Maybe $10 a pound beef will wake them up. No, probably not.Angry [:(!]Angry [:(!]Censored [censored]Banged Head [banghead] I couldn't find a single gif that would a really express the way I feel about that so I made up a train of them. Hey. That makes this post OK for the forums.Big Smile [:D]

I’d better get off and give Mary Ann a hand cleaning. By the way the official temperature yesterday made it to 102. Not that it matters.

You all have a good and safe day.

Good morning everyone, hazy sky today, 78% Rh, temp at 80F and the big number, the DP is at 72F...talk about tropical, you sweat just walking out the front door to get the newspaper!!! We are expecting big TS's this afternoon if the sun is strong enough during the day to fire up the atmosphere.

PAUL: That is really too bad that the wife doesn't want to have another dog, tell her that the dog can stay in the barn if the rug is the big issue, they are such great herders, they love to work the cattle too.
As for the heat, Paul you had really better be careful, you might have had a near close encounter with heat prostration, or "frustration" as I call it , LOL. 101F, WOW, that is so bad that you can't do anything, I hope the cattle are in the shade.
The bad news is, global warming is predicted to turn a lot of your area into a desert as the Texas badlands spread eastward.
The good news is, we have some nice buys on farms up here, as the the youngsters have all left the farms and the old timers are dying off, then the beautiful farmlands go to developers, what a shame.

Well Fergie must be on his way to the Arctic now, at least he will be cooler.

INCH53: Hey Mike, I have an idea for you regarding all those taxes and roads etc in Illinois. New Hampshire has been voted three years in a row as the #1 state. Move your family there. They have some nice LHS's there too. And, the Conway Scenic RR is always looking for help during the Summer season, so that would be great right ?? And think of this.....NH has NO SALES taxes, and NO INCOME taxes!!!! How about that!!!

Time to read the MRR and Trains mags that came yesterday, see you guys at the lunch table.

PS PHIL C: Get to work Phil, our SS checks are depending upon you working guys "working", so get out of the CS and make some money!! LOL

Mornin' everyone!

Bill, if I haven't mentioned it before, .....love the sign!

So what's everybody got going today?

Wife and kids are headed to the MDA doctors today.  Yearly exams for the kids and readjusting meds for the wife.  She's been having a lot of trouble lately.  Hopefully they can get that straight.  Me, I'm just working.

So again, what's up with you guys?

Evening All: I tried to talk Mary Ann into getting a dog to help with the cattle a couple of years ago. She didn't want to have another dog around. I guess she has me and that's enough trouble. At least I don't mess on the rug.

I think that I over did it working in the sun today. I had a cup of water with me and quit when I felt tired but it took most of the late afternoon to feel alright again. I'll have to watch it. It was 101f today. I'm getting tired of talking about the temp.

MR & Trains came today. I'll need them tomorrow waiting for the plane.

Well I guess I'll head for bed. The shower sure helped get me feeling better.

Good Night All.

Evening all, Barley pop Cloe please, OH, iif there any of RYANS crab n corn chowder left, can I gets a big bowl, it sounds purrty good right now.

Not  great day,  I just keep telling my self the 2 big ones are leaving Saturday. I'll take the 4 little ones any day, their easier than the biggens.

RYAN, we'll be sayin prayers for the sickly ones and a speical one fur you. Most of the corn will be cut off the cob n froze, Mother thinks we still have enough on the ear. But Saturday evening, there'll be be dozen or more ears in the smoker, don't know what else we'll be havin yet. Do know there'll also be barely pops and a few round of dominos during the evening.

GRAYFOX, the last I knew IL. had the 5'th highest gas tax and some of the worst roads, at least down state. A few years ago I seen the road tax break down and Chicago area got 68%. We need a new bridge just down over the hill from us and still can't find the funding. Saddest part is we have the highest property and sales tax in the our area, and are still broke.

Time fur bed and I need to go beat some boys [they leave Saturday][they leave Saturday] [no, didn't help]. Have good night

Good evening everyone......yet another scorcher here too, it was too hot to work in the garden so we headed to HD, and few other stores, the killer is getting in and out of the car and in and out of the stores...AIR CONDITIONING !!!!

I was reading an article that broke down the $3.00 per gallon cost of gas. It goes like this:
It cost between .12 and .24 to produce a gallon of gas, however, the people who drill, transport and sell crude oil get $1.65!! Why you ask, if it only cost .12 to .24 cents to produce one gallon of gas from raw crude? That is because oil is a commodity, like copper, gold, silver, etc. so it gets bid up on the open market by Bankers, Investment fund managers, oil companies, Airlines, and any other person interested in oil.

The next .60 goes to the refineries who must thermally heat and molecularly crack the oil turning it into gasolene.

The next .30 to .70 goes to governments. Here in the U.S., the Feds get .184 per gallon and your state and local governments get the rest for bridges, roads and clear air incentives. That is why California's gas is so much higher, they have to have the "cleanest" gas in the world because of all their air polution.

And finally, the poor Gas station owner get the remainder, .14 per gallon. Here is the kicker, most big name stations like Mobil, are actually owned and run by individual owners, not the companies who name their bear.
This data is courtesy of Cynthia Dermody, RD

RYAN: Yes, you are correct about blueberries, the report is 100%, blueberries are one of the very best cancer fighters, as they seek out "free radicals" in our bodies and take care of them. If we don't get rid of free radicals ( unattached electrons) they seek out a mate in our cells, stripping a molecule destroying the cells, and soon we get cancer, or so the story goes...GET THOSE FREE RADICALS...Grandma was RIGHT, EAT YOUR VEGGIES and FRUIT doggone it!!

PAUL B. How come you don't have a border collie to round up the cattle??? My grandfather had a collie, called Jimmy as I recall ( I was only 4 at the time), and he would open the gate to the pasture and tell Jimmy, " go get em Jimmy" and the dog would be off like a rocket herding the cattle back to the barn. Border Collies have natural herding instincts bred into them, they are great...give them a try Paul.

The August issues of Trains and MRR arrived today, so I am off to do some reading, have a great evening all, prayers to all who need them,

Good Evening All: Not much to report tonight. It's about 6pm and we're getting ready to head out to bring in the cattle. I spent the day working on mowing the weeds on the well site and then filling a couple of sink holes that I found. I also scrapped up some more gravel for our roads. I gotta get something out of the drilling companies for cleaning up after them.

The mystery of the mess in the basement has been solved. It was the dogs a corner of  the living room.Angry [:(!] We picked up some stuff ot handle the smell and spotting. The stuff we got was at Tractor Supply and really works.Smile [:)]

I'd better get going. Mary Ann is waiting. Oops [oops]

We need more rating stars huh!

The food in here is better than three stars, heck Dennys could get four stars for their breakfast Slams....

Yeah, the pizza train is a great idea.  The reserant makes out, the museum makes out, and the passengers get a great and unusual night out without breaking the bank.  Unfortunately, the only thing they deliver is people,....to the resterant.

The dinner train is good as well.  I haven't done the haunted train at Halloween or the Christmas train.

Oh great Fergie, May I appologise for my rude remarks and my senselessness? I don't know what I must have been thinking. I should have known that one so great as yourself would know the big guy, or should I say that the big guy would now someone so great as you!

(There, have I done enough to get you to mention my name to the guy in Red?Wink [;)])

The crossing is coming along well, although I've got a little ways to go yet. I'll get there though. I better get going, I've got things to do again today.

See ya around,

Good morning model railroaders…

Well everyone is sick at home but me! Monique went to the doctor on Monday and has a severe sinus infection and has been coughing for three days now, bronchitis and such in the respiratory system. Then she went to a dentist appointment and they found some kind of unusual growth below the gums between two her back teeth that showed up on the x-ray. Now she is supposed to go see an oral surgeon for a second opinion and possible biopsy to determine what the heck is under there. Then Ben has a stomach virus and cannot keep anything down. If I’m lucky I won’t get sick between the two of them being sick.   I am playing doctor of the house right now trying to keep them both well! Please pray for both of them!

And through all of that I did manage to get in just an hour of cork roadbed laying on the layout last night.

 gil Finn wrote:

Hey Gil, we talk about anything here in the CS! Even cars too!

Fergie, have a safe trip and see about bringing some of the cool air back on the return….

PC, now I know what the “Pizza Train” is all about! Does it deliver too? Speaking of pizza and since you are buying still, I think that sounds like a great lunch today. Placing my order now for a super large thin crust meat lover’s pizza.

Hello Jim and Luc! Just sayin’ Hi!

Attaboy, sorry to hear about the AC, I sure know that can affect your spirits! Cable Internet is great to have, and once you go to broadband there is no going back. Hopefully they will have it up and running for you sooner than later.

Dick, there is nothing like a summer rain shower to cool you off in the middle of the day! And guess what I had on my cereal for breakfast this morning? Yep, blueberries, yum! I also hear that blueberries have a natural cancer fighting element to them. Referencing this quote from a nutritional source on the Internet: “Recently, researchers at Tufts University analyzed 60 fruits and vegetables for their antioxidant capability. Blueberries came out on top, rating highest in their capacity to destroy free radicals.”

Der John, now that is some corrosion huh! Glad to see you in the CS again!

Ryan - Yup we are coping with the heat. Five more days of it before the next break at least according to our local weather guessers. At least we have had a thunderstorm in each of the last three days, keeps it interesting fer sure.I'm not all that partial to blueberries, but I do have a blackberry and raspberry patch and they too make excellant  smoothies.

Rob

Rob, glad to hear that you got a break from the heat with the rain showers! Now those smoothies sure do sound good too. I have been making banana and strawberry banana smoothies almost every night this week. They are great and refreshing, and cool you down too! I will have to try the other berries for smoothies, and maybe I will try a blueberry smoothie tonight!

Inch, fresh picked corn eh! Gotta love that stuff! I will have to make a batch of my crab and corn chowder for the CS sometime, virtually of course! LOL, I do cook up a batch of mean crab and corn chowder, and the fresher the corn the better.

Steve Mayerson was in last evening at the museum to do another weathering clinic, this one on rolling stock. He starts everything off with a coat of dullcoat spray (windows and all)and then hits the cars with brushed on ink and denatured alcohol. The wash interacts with the dullcoat and turns the chalky white I've been trying to create with chalk. but much better and more like the prototype. It looks particularly good on the tar roof of a passenger car. The rust and grit is done with brushed on chalks dry or wet with the alcohol clear or agan with dilute ink. Put on over the bright lettering on painted cars, the transformation is fantastic. He uses chalks in earth tones and grays from the craft store - nothing special - but I was really impressed.

GMTRacing, Nice description of the weathering session. I might have to try out that technique and experiment on one of my old Tyco items from days gone by….

Pizza will be ready for lunch, then for dinner we have some fresh crab and corn chowder. Thank Inch for the fresh corn. Oh, and we have fresh berries today too!

Cheers,

It was, but it's all connected.

Good Morning All,

Regular and a donut please for me. I always knew Grayfox was a man of great character. Blueberries are my favorite as well and I try to start off most mornings with some.
