Greetings to All !!!

Robert - I just read the note about your father and we have added him to the prayers here also. Take care, God Bless you and your family at this time.
- btw rats and mice LOVE peanut butter and raisins, served on a rat trap, try it, they'll like it...

Jh - great joke

sNoah - THE DRIVEWAY IS WAITING... 3 inches so far, -5 degrees C, still snowing with another 3- 5 inches tomorrow, there is black ice on the roads, snowplow and sanders busy on the other roads, I need to leave by 8 AM - so you have a few hours yet, you will find the snowshovel by the porch... GET BUSY Man !!!

Teffy - I thought everything could be found between GENESIS and REVELATION [:D]

Lupo - going back to one of your earlier notes - I grew up in the POLDER areas also, Pitt Polder here in BC's Lower Mainland (Ridge Meadows area - lots of Dutch folk including my relatives [^][^]) many walking dikes here by the rivers...
- celebrated Sinter Klaas with the kids - great fun

cheers, krump

Well It's packing day, though I've done some already the bulk is today. I'm sure when I step on the gangway the ship is liable to list over a few degrees. I counted my rolling stock and I have 24 cars, cabooses etc going with me for painting and marking. Unfortunately the decals are not due in till Friday but hopefully we'll be during the month so I can pick them up.

Bob: Lisa's back, though still sore, is on the mend and as long as she behaves (yeh right) she'll be fine. I found a loop of Bachmann Easy-track so I'm taking it with me along with the Genisis "Mike" and Empire Builder. Hopefully I'll be able to carve through the manual and make "heads and Tails" out of it. And yes the Atlantic is a nasty spot this time of year but at least I'm on a good sea boat. Hopefully the ice is making fast in the Gulf of St. Lawrence and we get assigned to Ice Breaking duties.

sNoah: As a Christmas gift to you I'll let you keep the snow your way. Hopefully you'll get a nice Christmas present under the tree.

CJ: Love the colour schemes but as a bit of a romantic and a traditionalist I prefer the old two tone grey with red and yellow.

Robert: I hope your Father is fine and he pulls through with flying colours as non one needs this, especially at this time of year, which of course is for family and friends.

John: If I am in the Sheet Harbour area I'll give you a shout. I'll be interested in your blood splatter patterns.

I also came up with a second method of making rock faces, which I'll post as a seperate thread. We had talked about it at the train show and it works!

Lupo: Keep the gang amused while I'm gone please. You might have to fire a snow ball at Noah from time to time, just to keep him amused. Though it is nice to know that some of the younger crowd can be behaved, Isn't that right CJ!

Ed, Phil, Tom, Paul, Bob, RDL, CW: Here's hoping for a White Christmas for you guys. I'm sure it would be a novelty but think of it as building character, a few muscles and a way to develop a touch of empathy for us Northeners, while you southerners smirk at us while we make snow forts and snow angles. Hey it's - 13 C (14 F) But that's OK We're real men in these parts and "It's 40 below and the heater's in the truck... and I'm off

JP: Remember the Man Prayer as taught to us by the great prophet Red Green.

I'm a man
I can change
If I have to
I guess
Amen

I hope good things for you and yours this Holiday Season

Krump: Have a good one and if you get lots of snow, send it to Noah.

James: Here's hoping everything settles at work and your Holiday's are Happy ones.

Luct: Hopefully everyone else will get our snow as it is one of those gifts worth giving and giving lots of! Hopefully our paths will cross in the New Year.

Anyway If I've missed anyone I'm sorry but I'm still around for the rest of the day and first thing tomorrow.

Seasons Greetings
Fergie

Good morning sports fans,

Great Monday Night Football game last night. I managed to stay awake until the exciting end. I was surprised that the Cowboys pulled it out, but they didn't give up.

Weather continues to be good down here. Still running the a/c for most of the day, but it's nice enough right at this moment to turn it off. Forecast says we may get some nighttime lows around 50º by the end of the week. Yesterday afternoon it crept up close to 90º again.

Good joke, Jim. Hadn't heard that one before.

Robert, maybe you need another dog? Terriers used to be good ratters. Maybe you could still find one that hasn't had it all bred out of him. How's your father doing?

QUOTE: Missouri Jim: Thanks for the suggestion Ed - but after looking at the prices for the Walthers' turnouts (looks like about $15 a whack, and the plan I'm looking to build has 10-12 of them, plus flex track, etc.), I may have to start with the brass code 100 I have until I win the lottery or get more saved up.

Or just purchase them one or two at a time and then work on installing that section of mainline. Nothing says you need to have all the material before starting construction. Or start with the brass track but don't fasten it down permanently. Then each time you get some new material, work on swapping it out.

Still waiting to get the car back from the shop. Today could be the day...............

Hasta luego,

Ed

Good Mornin' Everybody,
It's a gray rainy day in the mountains. It has been for the last several days, and is supposed to continue for a while. It's remarkably warm for this time of year, so there's no chance of snow yet.

Trav, my son, is up for a few days and we've been catching up on what's been going on. It's been a good time. He's still lives down in Tampa. Shawna is in the midst of finals this week. They're going well, and she will be finished with them Thursday. She has to work this weekend. She's doing the sound for a recital Friday and Saturday nights, so I'll pick her up Sunday morning early and bring her home. we are all ready for her to be home.

Fergie, Have a good cruise and stay safe. I hope you get a lot of model building done. Check in as you can. We'll keep the coffee ready.

RDL, I hope your Dad is doing well. The docs can do amazing things now, especially when it's caught and treated early. We're thinking about you and praying for you all.

Der, the mountains are looking good. I'm glad to hear that I'm not the only one who ocassionally sacrifices a little blood to a project. I try to keep the quantities small. It's a symbolic thing only, and cleaning up large amounts is really messy.

I'd better go for now. We're going to go have breakfast and then see what the rest of the day brings.

Have a great day everybody,
Tom

Good Morning All:

The AC was on again last night. When I went to bed ay half time the Cowboys were ahead, but according to Ed this morning it was a squeeker. It's a sign of age when you can't stay up late enough to see the whole game. Buy I was up at 5:30 to feed the birds and get the tea water warming up.

Fergie:
Have a safe trip and I hope that you will be along side for Christmas. Just out of courisity, do you have any guns on your ship?

Jim:
When I started this layout I had ordered a full box of flex track, six boxes of cork and a handfull of switches. I started out just laying just the mainline to get something running and then came back and laid the yard. I'm just getting around to laying the second loop as I got cought up in train running with the first one. This loop has the switch that leads off to the branch line so now I will be able to start it. If you HAVE to use the brass put it in the front where it will be easy to clean and try to use as much nickel silver as possable. I don't advise waiting to start as that seems to never get done once you start procrastanating.
You might want to think about a "test track". For me it was a 1" X 12" X 15' board sitting on shelf hangers. This gave me a grade, switching possabilities with several switches and a chance to see if I wanted to go with cork, milled roadbed, or handlaid ties. Also it was a place to try out the decodered locos before putting them on the layout. I used it until I was about six months into this layout. I still have it out in the garage, don't know what I'm going to do with it, but I might give it to someone interested in starting a layout. It was a nice test area as I tried several "new to me" ideas.

Robert:
Your dad will be in our prayers. What is your phone number?

John:
If you want some more blood on your layout - Fergie is going to sea and might be in Sheet harbour for a while Ha Ha Ha, so he can donate. Wait while I stop laughing. After all you do have a knife to open him up and a soldering gun to close the wound. Just picking, Fergie. I'm feeling pretty good as I haven't dropped any solder in my lap now for about three weeks, but God will get even for the last statement and I'll have to be careful for awhile.

Jim/Jim:
Now with two Jims, what are we going to do?

Well Stephanie tells me that it's time to go to work so I guess I'd better get dressed

Ya'll have a blessed day and remember SANTA FE ALL THE WAY

Me with a Gun! Considering what I can do with a soldering iron do you really think it would be safe on the high seas? Blood Splatter would be the least of my worries. I'm thinking self inflicted carnage.

Though not an armed service, we can load and go at a moments notice with armed personnel and have done so in the past (Actually we can load quicker then it takes me to pack, I packed my modelling supplies and I filled a 5 gallon tub)

I supect we'll be roaming the high seas this time looking for "purpletraitors".[:D]

Hey, Luc - like your kind of _large_ photo of the Royal Hudson loco on one of your posts. Did you supersize that one? [;)]

Paul, I actually found all my boxes of MR stuff in my storage unit(!). [:)] I'd been *about* to build a layout in the basement a year or so before my divorce started (so never got too much further along on it). I'd boxed up all the important stuff when I moved my stuff out of the house, and had it in the back of my storage unit here. Guess I'd figured I wouldn't be starting back on the layout for a while, and then forgot (almost) it was there. But all the lumber and Homosote I've had leaned against the one side wall reminded me, over time. Glad it did! [:D]

Hey, some of us get thirstier than others...[;)][}:)]

Well, Teffy, our Missouri weather may be as crazy as yours - it _warmed_up_ to 63 degrees by the late news tonight (our time, about 10:20 p.m. CST). I may have to get my summer pj's back out! Maybe we can get JP to send some of that cooler wind down our way? [;)]

Local club? If there is one, i haven't found it yet - we're lucky to have a LHS. [:)]

So JP, do you guys go for the spicy wings, original crispy, or (as my friend from Memphis would say it) Bah-bee-kew?[;)]

RDL, I hear those 'blue peanuts' work well for the rhodents. Many years ago, my dad used 'em on some pesky squirrels that were getting into his & Mom's tomato plants. Pesky buggers would get a tomato, haul it up the tree, take about one bite out of the tomato, and throw it down. Kind of got Dad {censored]-ed off with the furry ones...

Well, it's about bedtime for me - one short cup of the decaf, please and I'll be off to sleep. I can sleep in a bit tomorrow - I'm on call tomorrow night and don't have to go in until 1 p.m. our time (CST). Tomorrow's payday [bow] - so I'm planning to pick up a 2005 Walther's (got my Woodland Scenics 2005 in the mail today). May also get the Jan. 2005 MRR at our Barnes & Noble; saw they had them in over the weekend.

Will check back in tomorrow (either before or after I go to work or on-call) and see what everyone's up to.

Hey, JP, maybe you could get Rosie to handle your rat situation?! If she got a full belly of rat, might mellow her out... [:)]

Blessings,

Jim in Cape Girardeau

Jim,
I'll send you some SNOW! As for the wings, we go for the mild as the CFO's son is not a Medium or Hot person. And as for RATS...that would be RDL (Robert), not me. My d**n cat would eat the thing in a heartbeat! lmao......

We have a good pizza parlor about 5 minutes from the house... it's run by the Greeks.... Best D**N pizza and wings we've had. Go figure... Greeks making AWESOME Italiant and American FOOD! I think he mixes some BBQ sauce into his wing sauce.... kinda like a hot and sweet taste...mmmmmmmmmmmmmm. Even gots left overs. Not sure for how long thought as the kid loves those wings.....

Weather is cold, windy and RAINING! eeeeeeeeewwwwwww

Fergie... Ever make it down into Lake Ontario and make port calls on the US side? Might be able to do a 'meet and greet' if you make it out this way.

I'm starting to make up a list of motive power I'd like to have on my layout. GP38-2's - Conrail and CSX; a Finger Lakes Railways GP9 in the black-and-white NYC scheme; SW1500...road uncertain; U23B - Conrail, CS; Dash8-40B - Conrail, CSX; still looking and wondering on some others.

For those that remember my post from last week about making a project center, I looked at the cabinets I have for RR storage and saw the old particle-board dresser that I took from a neighbor last spring and cut down to a 4-drawer.... Add a 1/2 or 3/4 inch plywood base the same size as the base of the dresser, attach 4 wheels for mobility, and another 1/2 or 3/4 inch plywood for the top..... no need to buy alot of material other than the plywood, wheels and more screws. Nice cheep way out of a expensive money-spending job! I'm good like that! hahahahahahahaaaa

Well all, off to do some more work. I'll be back before I leave....

QUOTE: By Lawrence: Well, we paid the piper today in northern Indiana.

Seems that may be the solution to the rat problem; the "Pied Piper"....but, you'd better pay him, as the good folk of Hamblin found out!!!![(-D] Rosie-the dog would have a go, but the imigration folks are on the lookout since her foray into the northern tier earlier this Fall.[:-,]

And, BTW Noah, why all the fuss at the time about not getting your SD40s, when you are waiting for a magazine or something before taking delivery? I mean, talk about getting your knickers in a twist (Brit expression, think wedgie) [(-D][(-D][(-D]

On the benefits of the Great White North, in particular, and MR in general:
I was in the local restaurant for lunch today. Couldn't help overhearing the golfing story being told over at another table.
Seems this chap was golfing in the Southern States (could have been S. Carolina, as that was mentioned in a later bit of the diatribeconversation) He had aligators over there, a water mocasin here, and the bushes were full of diamond backs. Now, I'm ready to admit that he may have been full of "it", but it made me glad that I live where we don't have to contend with critters like that. BTW, I couldn't help hearing because this news was being shared with the world at large, and there was no volume control. [V] I think you've met the type.
Struck me that model railroading was a whole lot safer, and probably a whole lot cheaper too.

Fairwinds, Fergie, and if you are in port for a spell, phone. I'll take a trip to the basement to get some fresh spider web for the cuts [(-D]

Just got in from Home Depot with a load of lumber, I'll starting to build this weekend if my son is available.

John, well, origonally I wasn't, be he didn't get it shipped and just listed the Calendars, so I had him add it to my order.

Fergie, that is nice, I like that. I should try something like that some day....

Well, not much more from me, the usual homework, and other assorted things, so I'll see you all later.....

Hey, all. Again, thanks for all your prayers. My dad is still in the hospital. The chestpains he had are gone. They want to see if they can get his diabetes under control. It either goes way up, or gets too low. Hopefully, he'll be out in a few days.

Well, I tried cats. After three months of claening up cat hair the locos still come in with hair on them. I don't know which is worse the cat hair or the rodent leavings.

The Canadian Government has been considering arming the Canadian coast guard vessals. I don't know what kind of weapons would be involved. I can just picture Fergie with a 5" rapid fire on the foredeck of the Cornwallas.

Fergie, Have you heard anything on that subject?

I've just about deceided to start over on a new layout. The more I try to make the old one do what I want the less I like it. I've been doing some work with the layout in the December MR. The one based on the John Armstrong designe. I have a little more room so I'm enlarging the min. curve radius to 30". The curve into the Elkins yard is going to have to be 28" , but I can live with that. The ore dock will go on the end of the industrial area at Elkins. I'll add 6" to the width of the Elkins yard so I can get a couple of addtional tracks on the left of the main. I'll also run the lead for the ore dock along the back of the Elkins yard and around to the right to the dock. I'm still working on the rest, so stay tuned. Everything still dependes on getting the basement cleaned out.

By the by. Fergie does the Capt. know about your disability with soldering irons. Hope you have a good medic on board. Ice breaking does sound better than fighting the north Atlantic in winter. At least you have plenty of ice for the margareties.

Okay Paul, no cats. One more suggestion. Have you tried those stickly glue traps where you just put them down in corners where mice tend to run and wait for them to step in them and get stuck? We've had some success with them in cases where it's been needed. They also work well on scorpions, trust me.

Okay breaking news..... Ed's doing the Happy (sort of) Dance [:D] [^] [:P] [swg] [tup] [:D] because we finally ransomed the car back from the repair shop. It only took a week and about half a G and change. The brakes still seem a bit soft to me but it stops fine. It's getting to the point where I'm asking myself if it's really worth it to keep repairing this dude. But then I figure, it's almost completely rebuilt by now, how many more things can go wrong??? (Yeah, I know the answer to that, it was a rhetorical question).

A piece of pumpkin pie, some coffee, and we're getting close to calling it a day.

Catch you all tomorrow,

Ed

Noah [;)]

Didn't we have an agreement last year about me doing your homework and you and Jesse going to work for me? Well since Jesse no longer posts here maybe Chris will fill in for him. I am about ready to renew the agreement. [;)]

A friend of mine sent me a short video of a squirrel and a deer. The squirrel wasn't too happy with the deer and "told" him about it. It is kinda funny to see the little guy take on the much bigger deer. I am going to email it to Chris but if you need a little funny straight from nature drop me an email and I will share it with you too. [:)]

The weather seems to just get crazier all the time. We still have bees, wasps, flies, mosquitoes, and ants everywhere. I just check the temp: Houston 55, Dallas/Ft. W 46, and Little Rock 43. It really should be some colder than that.

Those who remember me posting about David's (El Parro) Union Pacific forum, we now have 12 members but of course are looking for more. I have posted some pics there of the 3985, bridges, etc., and will be posting more stuff soon. Come on over and join, it is a nice friendly forum and best of all, there is no Kissmycaboose. [:)] [}:)] [;)] (And there won't be either.)

I hope to see you all in the forum. Thanks.

Ok, got to run, getting tired now. [V]

Fergie - have a great trip out, and safe holiday season... a mocha is waiting for you when you return later. All we ask is that POSTCARDS are sent for everyone [^][^]

cheers, krump

Fergie- Fair winds and a following sea. I still think it's pretty neat to be able to say I know a member of the CCG!
As for rats, I had that problem until the 9 PC's (Patrol Cats) moved in with me. Now, except for inside the pup prison- which currently has an inmate pop of 8- NOTHING lives in my yard that the PC's take notice of. I've found remains of-rats, mice, moles, gophers, chipmunks, and something with big nasty teeth. 9 PC's can really tear up the rodents roaming over a couple of acres, and I love every one of 'em. Some people love 'em, some hate 'em, but you have to respect a near perfect killing machine. Like the Alien, but a bit more tame. Or you could set up a local rat-fari and make money on hunting it.
My gee-ler friend and I are thinking of taking my 24x30 trainshop and turning it into a house until we can pay off enough debt to build a log cabin, which should be in about 3-4 years. She is actually more concerned about my not having a place for my trains than I am. I've explained to her that as I havn't laid a foot of track in the 7 months since I tore it down that maybe this is a good use for it, and I can build a small layout until we move into the cabin, and then I'd have a great trainshop! I'll let you know how it goes.
Robert- i'm fighting the same sugar problem as your dad, only mine never gets too low. I think it's only a matter of time before we get it under control, but working midnights plays havoc with establishing a routine to follow on your diet.
Ed- how about setting up a unit train with some of your heat and running it my way- loading would be simple, but loss in transit might get a bit out of control. How many N-ormal scale hoppers of 90 degree air does it take to warm up 2 acres, anyway. Get your sales dept on it and let my MIDwest people know. I'll be glad to back load all of the ice, snow and grey weather you can handle. Wish you were in 'G' now.
Okey fine, gonna try to get some scale lumber ordered this week and build a big, neat, ...bunch of ...scale lumber ..kinda ...things.

Sorry about the second post, but Jim, I used some of my old brass track for abandoned sidings and unpowered interchanges, you can weather it up as much as you want and it looks pretty good.
I don't know about your LHS, but I can't imagine getting any kind of a decent trade or price out of brass.
It also looks good as spare rail placed next to your mainline.
Hope some of this helped and i didn't repeat what others already said.

Good Morning Coffee Clubbers,

Weather continues warm down here south of the border. Maybe there's something to this global warming after all. Oh, what's that, you say it's not warm where you are!!!!! [:0] Oh yeah, forgot that a lot of you are not in the land of the palm trees. My bad. [:D]

Robert, glad to hear that your father is better.

Hey Phil, good to hear from you again. Glad to hear you’re still working on having a real-life railroader for a F-I-L. Interesting concept that, turning your layout room into a house. Wouldn’t that free up some space in the trailer/pup prison that you could then use for a layout?

I suppose I could get a mini compressor and see if I can get some warm air in the Pemex tank cars that I have and ship them north. Won’t hold much though. They’re made to hold liquids at atmospheric pressure, they’re not lpg cars. Sorry…..

Brass track? Were you talking about selling old brass track, Jim (Cape Girardeau Jim, that is)? [%-)] When you said “…sell some of my old brass…” I thought you were talking about a brass engine or two. I thought that would give you plenty to buy new NS track. Okay, guess my reading comprehension skills are slipping a bit too. [:)]

Hasta luego,

Ed

Good Morning, All![:)] [8D] [:)]

Got my bottomless cup with me, so I'm ready for the haul today. (I was on-call last night and am off today as a result. Got a whole 5 hours of sleep last night!) [zzz]

Very(!) nice tree, Fergie! But where's the train around the base?[;)]

Phil has found the secret (or his Pack o'Nine - Cats - has) for controlling the varmits. Just wear 'em down! Of course, there is the offsetting costs of kitty litter and food for 9 cats, though... [;)] Oh, and I **love** your precise terminology for those scale lumber projects - will you be getting scale widgets to help assemble the projects, too? [;)] Thanks for the ideas on using the brass line, too. The penny-pincher in me likes the idea of not wasting the old(er) track.

Actually, besides Phil's idea of sending the air by rail, we could all just spend a few hours chatting up north - ought to thaw that nasty white stuff really quickly! [:D][;)]

Besides the Walther catalog and the Sassi book, yesterday I bought the Jan. issue of MR mag, and was thinking the extension they had in there could easily be modded for Sassi's layout. But then again, I kind of like the folded ovel (figure 8) type of layout for the smaller size I'm looking at right now. Or I might just count up all the track I have and see what kind of layout I can make just from that and get started. I think that most of the switches I have (maybe 6 or so?) are Atlas Custom switches and I have the (clip-on) motors for them. I'll want to replace with under-the-track motors later, natch (maybe Tortoises).

Anyone here have experience with using the Tortoise switch engines, or have other motors that you like? Tell me what you have/like and why. (You can email me separately if it'd be too long to post here).

Weather here has been trying to make up its mind - we've been getting light frost on the windshields at night but warming up to the upper 50's/lower 60's in the days. I'm not taunting our Canadian friends, really!

Well, need to refill my cup, so I'm heading for the coffee pot for now.

Smooth running (track and engines, and anything else, for that matter) to all of you (and efficient snowplows for our more northern folks),

Jim

How do you go about making coal or rock loads from foam? I need to make a whole train full of rock, and I would use the real thing but I am going to pull it with an Atlas Dash-8 and it just doesn't have the power.

Paul- maybe Texas has an import tax on E mails. Fergie and Lupo got the pictures.
I also sent them to krump and Teffy but don't know if they got them.
Flip.
It's almost my bedtime, so goodnight.

Its just Texas, what can you expect[:D]

Paul; I know how the layout goes, I'm not even done yet, and I already have my next one planned. (doubt if it'll happen for the next ten years though[:D])

Fergie: I'm with Krump, bring me a postcard, and I'll be expecting a gift too[:D]!!!

Class is almost over, got to go,

Krump: As for the rat trap. We've tried them, they didn't work. And, a rat stole the trap. We had to buy another, and tie the trap down. We bought something called "Just One Bite" to put out. Maybe this will work.[xx(]

My dad is still in the hospital. He's doing fine. Hopefully, he'll get out Thursday, or Friday.

Awhile back, I spoke about my layout, and didn't know what to call it. I want to inform everyone that "The Valley Belt Railway - VBR" has just been established. It will serve a fictious area based in East Texas. I still haven't started on the design, yet. The major industries will be a paper mill, sawmill, port, and auto distribution facility, as well as smaller industries. It will connect with the BNSF railway. It will be in HO, modern. Any advice you have will be appreciated.[?]

Fergie, all the best to ya.

That's about all for now.

Robert
