Good Evening Everybody,
It's been a busy couple of days in the mountains. Shawna has been working hard to get papers and projects done, and Louise and I have been helping as we can. The line between her work and someone elses hasn't been crossed, but there are lots of ways to help without getting toes on the line. It's getting done. Not much progress on the railroad, but that's OK. I did get the Branchline coaches finally finished. Modifying the coupler arms to inset the coupler boxes worked well. The cars couple much more closely than stock and no problems with derailments or unintended uncoupling.

There's a GATS train show in Atlanta next weekend. Bill and I are going to drive down and see what we can find. I wouldn't mind a really good deal on another BLI light mike or a few more Branchline coaches. We'll see what happens.

Noah, congrats on the MC'ing job. The more public speaking you do, the easier it gets, but I'm not sure the "Pregame butterflies" ever go away completely. I spent a fair amount of time teaching in the Marine Corps and in my career, and I was always a little nervous before I started. Once I got going, I was fine. It just takes practice. As everyone has said, it's a very valuable skill to have. By the way, It's not snowing here yet. But it won't be long.

Chris, the '50s CB&Q sounds good. Late steam, early diesel and cabooses are hard to beat. Plus you have a huge variety in rolling stock to choose from: wood sided cars, steel riveted and welded cars, early trailer on flat car combos, all kinds of cool stuff.

Der, I enjoyed the comment about the Titanic and the Ark. That will make you pause and think a bit, won't it. Sesame Street is 35 years old? Oh my! Jenny and Trav, my two oldest grew up with it, and with The Muppet Show. They were both really good shows.

Ed, I think "Thanks" is a very safe answer. If it snows that far south, Noah better bring a few friends with him, because we're all going to be in serious trouble. I'm a fan of Poe's work also. It's beautifully written and very suspensefull.

Teffy, I used the 2x4 for the cantilever braced because I had them left over from building the house. 2x2's are plenty strong for them. I like the cantilever system because it opens up the area below the RR so much more than a conventional leg system does.
I'm sorry you're having to deal with the problem of the "heirs". It's not much fun. Unfortunately it's way too common.

Dit,dit,dit,dit. Train Show Report.
Son John and I picked up my neighbor and headed for Ft. Worth. Paid $8 a head to get in and had a pleasant few hours. Lots of layouts on display. More Nearly Invisable than I've almost seen in awhile. There was one On30 layout that was very nice.
John bought 2 LGB switches. He had seen a Bachman 4-6-0 for sale for $150. When he found out there wasn't going to be sales tax he bought it. Then he blames me because I didn't get him to leave soon enough. I ended up with 3 pairs of surgical sisors(sp) and a Bachman HO 2-8-0. I was a little hesatant because the box looked alittle beat up. The dealer is in Dallas so if there is anything really wrong I'll know where to find him. I paid $89 for it so can't complain too much. It is a good looking loco.

Noah or Sven or whatever; You are going to have to try harder. It's been raining most of the day. Not cold enough for snow. Nuts.

Cleaned some more track tonight. I found that some of the areas I cleaned earlier had gotten corroded again. Now I'm wiping the rail with Corrosion X after I use the Bright Boy or wet dry sand paper. ( 400 grit ) I'll see how that works.

John and I got my G ore dock out of storage in the up stairs of the barn. It needs some work but still looked good. he wants to use it in the big pond he's building. Now I'll have to get some ore cars for it.

Oh yea. I forgot to mention that I picked up 5 old Varney ore cars. Four of them are in poor shape, paid $1 each for them. The other is new in box.

Fergie; Have a good trip and drive carefull. Are there any hobby shops where your going? Do what I did when the Army sent me on little trips like to RVN. I took along some kits and tools and spent some time doing my thing.

I'm outta here in about four hours. From what the Weather Network and Environment Canada is saying I'm looking mostly at rain. I'll be driving a brand new Ford Explorer (rental) so it should be a reasonable drive.

As far as kits go I don't know how much frre time I'll be getting as there is also some evening classes so I could be a very busy person over the next five days. However, I am taking a Sylvan train station kit and a Juneco Wood Caboose. So I won't go empty handed.

Bob: I'm holding off on the other kits until I get back onboard as I'll have more time and tools and a bigger workspace.

John: I saw your pictures, looking good! except the foam would be better white as can be seen from looking out our windows! (I started singing Christmas Carols yesterday and got one of those death stares from Lisa as it's her Birthday this week and one thing she can't stand is snow before her B'day). Lisa is on the mend and will be back at work Monday but she still has a while to go until she's fully heeled.

Tom: Good to see Shawna is on the mend on back on track. These things always take a awhile to fully sort themselves out. She will be a better person for it when the dust settles.

Good Morning All:

The second cup of tea sure hits the spot..Isn't it nice that we now have Sven vid us and no longer have Noah vanting snow. HMMMMM - I vunder vat does Sven do for a living? Is he an "A" student also.

Ed:
I took some more pictures of the track and on the review button they look a lot better but I haven't put them on the TV yet. We (I) just re-arranged the living room and I haven't gotten all of the wires conected back to the TV. The TV is now sitting on a much higher wine cabnet and is going to be easier to see. Mrs. "T" has to be able to watch "Law and Order". She's figured out a use for everything but the glass holders. I didn't even remember the "flower" button until you reminded me. It worked pretty good.

On hydroponics: we drove to Canada to buy: 1) a pump made in China for a company in Oklahoma City; 2) a timer made also in China for a company in Chicago, Ill.; and 3) some Atwood marine fittings. Went we go to Houston we never had time to look at any of the hydroponic stuff, I guess we will now. Between Papa Ben's and a plant store, we probably can't afford to go to Houston too much.

Sand paper cause small grooves in the track and then you have dirt get in their and start the build-up process. You're better off to use a chemical cleaner like Aero locomotive track cleaner ACT6006, available a Loy's Toys for $6.50

(see Ed and Lupo - a little learning is a dangerous thing) This works better then Goo Gone as it doesn't leave a film. If my track is dirty I just put on the 2-8-8-2 (because of so many pick up wheels) and pull my track cleaner car around the layout. I have a centerline car and am very pleased with it.

I buy almost everything , from eBay to on-line, by money order and haven't had any trouble. I can usually wait the extra few days.

John:
My trip was to early. You've been making good progress on the layout. I've decided to build a curved tressel (bridge) on the branch line but we're going to be looking at the inside instead of the outside so it will not be as impressive as the one that you built, but I'm looking forward to the design and construction.

Someone just called and they have a down bus, with 43 passengers, out on the freeway so I've got to go - see ya'll later

Wow, some really great modeling work there. I really enjoyed opening up the link to the last one. When you look at that shot full size, even though it requires scrolling back and forth, you can really see the incredible amount of detail they've included.

I don't get why you all don't like this Sven guy. I think he's kind of neat. I've never known a true Norweigian(sp?) before. Too bad you all made him run off. But I just can't understand why he wouldn't like snow.

Anyway, I'm making a dash for it hopefuly before Fergie or the other hunters walk in, all I see around lately is Ed. Ed's I nice guy, he likes snow.

Chris, Aha! But that's where my ingenious plan comes in. A railroad car ferry! I plan on building from there to Sibera, they have lots of snow there (and hopefully no coffee shops, and also hopefully guns freeze shut!)

Well not much new around here. Just been one of those days. I plan on working the ARK later, so I can get the track ready for when my SD40-2's come (hopefully some time this week!) Also got to look around to find some building clamps, for assembling the kit I bought recently.

It's 4:13 to go at 6:17 CST and Ed's beer is more water then beer since he's crying in it. Ain't no way the Vicks will pull it out - even with the TD they just made. So they just tied the score.

BTW: I just got my drill track laid so the race is back on. The drill track is 83" long and the longest yard track is 87"

Darn good idea, I'll try that next time. It'll be interesting to see if it will de-rail the engine since it has a lot of resistance to it.

Yeah, the Giants defense quit in the middle of the second quarter for the second week in a row. [:(] Both losses against teams they should have beat. I guess I'm making up for the success of the Red Sox by having to watch the Giants self destruct.


An 83" drill track!!!!?? That's longer than my whole layout. Probably wider too. [:D]

Bob- I use a Caboose track cleaning car. I soak the pad with Goo-Gone and push it around my whole pike. Cleans the track even under the windows and the wheels on the loco are clean and shiney. "Try it, you'll Like it." {Remember that ad?}[:D].

Well it was back to the train show again today. I just had to just to drive Ed alittle further along the path to insanity. Actually I had to return that Spectrum 2-8-0. It didn't run worth a hoot , the wires to the tender lifted the front of the tender off the track , one of the wires had a crack in the insulation,and it looked like it had been run some more than just testing. The guy I got it from was very nice about it and gave me a refund. I'll deal with him again. As I was wondering around the show I saw another Spectrum 2-8-0 for sale at the place that John got his G 4-6-0. It was marked $79.95 tax included,so I bought it. Of course that left me $10 to the good, so I bought a G wood ore car for 1/2 the sticker price of $52. On the way out I stopped at the table of a friend of mine from work. He had a copy of a Milwaukee Road book that I didn't have and made me a real good price on it. Guess what? I bought it too. I should have stayed home.

Teffy; I don't like using sand paper ether, but you have never seen corrision like this. I used wet/dry paper so I could use some lubricant with it. after that a Bright Boy and a wipe with Corrision X. I may still have to replace alot of track. Lets see now. If my math is still good an 87 inch yard track is 4 inches longer than an 83 inch drill track. That may work for you but I'd always be one car too short. (joke) Actually, I envey you having a drill track that long.

Lupo; Thanks for the pictures. That is some outstanding modeling. I forgot to take my camera today,so no pics. I probaly couldn't get a good picture with out a macro attachment. All that N gauge.

I'll miss Sven. It's nice to have a fellow Norseman around.

It rained all day today. I guess it is supposed to rain tomorow to. Figures. I'll have to go around and check the park and turn all my stuff off in the rain.

Update for Jim: ummm, diesel is runnin good. Wait.. thats not what he wanted. Lets see... oh yeah, snow report.

Did a 400 mile roadtrip because i got bored down here at widener. First went to northern jersey and then went west to wellsborugh Pa to hang with my uncle for the night. 4 degrees and 8 inches of snow. Filled the back of the truck to bring some back to widener for some winter fun, but it melted by the time i got back.
