Good day Tom Watkins - posted some info re: 'tannery' elsewhere on this Forum that may be helpful to you-

hey "lupo' - thanks for your continuing suggestions re: fixing the stupid +_)(*&^%$#@! problems w/ Windows XP and Internet Explorer on my PC. Do you think dropping it out my second floor office window would cure it?

hello bill,
what you suggest definately will solve all problems, other options are:
speaking vey loud next to the machine that you are thinking about buying an Apple computer or going to install LINUX sometimes make them ( those @#$%^& machines) realise that they are expendable, and in some cases they start showing better conduct [:D]

but serious: I looked at the silly phrases you posted:

and that suggest something in your computer is trying to link something to www.targetwords.com, did you install software by them or something? or can you find in your software list something relating to that?

BTW: do not take your anger out at your computer hardware,

because IMO in 99,9 % of all trouble it is caused by the software all those little IC's and semiconductors only do what the software tells them to do or to do NOT, I tried hitting my display once and the trouble did not go away, the pain lasted longer,

Lupo, every time I come here you give me another laugh with those different moving GIF's and things. Where do you get them? I would assume it's another website of somesort.

Sorry Jim, I haven't seen your sanity around here any place, but I'll let you know if I do.

Actually the caboose WAS the passenger car on some railroads. It also served as the REA area, and I have seen pics of the caboose being used to haul milk cans (you know the old metal ones).

On regular passenger trains the conductor was in the coaches and didn't need to ride in a caboose. He did have an area to himself where he would do the paperwork he needed to do. Another item to think about is weight. Why pull an extra car that really isn't needed! Many of the engines were pulling their max load and just didn't need any extra weight to pull.

Thanks Noah!
I find those pictures across the internet, sometimes I stumble across them and bookmark 'm for later use, or I type in a search at yahoo: somethink like " animated gif " and look what comes up, if you have more than one page of results try to skip the obvious and look at pages further on, there can be interesting results there !.[8D][:o)]

btw I think your follow up on the NES for blatant was right,
but for english not being my "native tongue" [:P] [:P] I use http://www.m-w.com/ Meriam-Webster as online dictionary (not all the times as you might have noticed ), It comes with very cool pronunciation help! as well!

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!! We let it slip the first page! we're all doomed under the rath of Big_Boy_4005 when he finds out. Run! Hide! Help! [:D]

Seriously, it's nobody's fault, we got to make sure this doesn't happen again.

Dougal, If you see this, how many miles of the track does the D&H run? Are they a fairly small short line, or more of a regional railroad?

Reply to Noah's D&H question: It depends on the era you are looking at as to whether you think of it as a regional or larger carrier.

D&H "in the day" was primarily an anthracite road.

In time they expanded north into northern NY with an outlet to Montreal. Thus their slogan "Bridge Line Route Between New England and Canada" which you probably remember seeing on their cars.

IIRC, and I defer to the experts out there, in 1976 the "expanded" D&H came about. They got trackage rights as part of the creation of Conrail. This included rights over the old PRR from Sunbury, PA down to Potomac Yard (Washington, DC). They also got trackage rights on the old EL from Binghamton to Buffalo. The final piece of the pie was trackage rights giving them access to New York and Phildelphia over what used to be parts of the RDG and the LV.

D&H, although it remained independent became part of the Guilford system in 1982. D&H became a CP property in June, 1990. The rest of the story has been covered extensively in the rail press.

One small aside we used to see D&H cars marked for ilmenite service off the D&H in the C&O yard here; they were carrying magnetite for use in coal prep plants. IIRC again, ilmenite is used mainly in ceramics.

Now let's go eat. As the orcs say, "look like meat's back on the menu..."

Hope this helps.

work safe

In the mindless garbage that comes to my company e-mailbox everyday (spam) and that I have to look through manually to pick out businessmail, nowadays have jokes in the text to confuse spam filters.
Here is a train related joke I picked up:

A large two engine train was crossing America. After they had gone some distance one
of the engines broke down."No problem," the engineer thought, and carried on at half-ower. Further on down the line, the other engine broke down, and the train came to a standstill.
The engineer decided he should inform the passengers about why the train had stopped, and made the following announcement::
"Ladies and gentlemen, I have some good news and some bad news.
The bad news is that both engines have failed, and we will be stuck here for some time.
The good news is that this is a train and not a plane."

enjoy your coffee !

Good Mornin' Everybody,
It's another beautiful morning in the North Georgia mountains. The coffee was really good today.
I really appreciate everyone's help on the tannery question. It will make that part of the railroad a lot more realistic and interesting.
I've got some yard work to get done this morning and then it will be off to the railroad room to have fun.
Tomorrow I'm heading down to Kennesaw Ga. to the Kudzu Rails fest. Should be a lot of fun and hopefully I can find some information I've been looking for.
Have Fun,
Tom Watkins

Fresh? At 64? In Quebec??? I thought you guys fired up the a/c when it rose above 60?? I'd love to see 64 degrees again, maybe this winter.

The humidity has been awful around here lately, in the mornings you can practically cut it with a knife. It got up to 95 or so yesterday afternoon, just before the power went off. That in itself isn't all that unusual, but this time there was no storm or wind to blame it on. Who knows? Fortunately it came back after only 4 hours.

I had my first try at lettering a car with dry transfer letters the other day. Boy, it sure is easy to get them on crooked, isn't it. Plus, while I'm burnishing one letter, my fingers are pressing it's neighbor on over the letter I just burnished. I'm only trying to put on some reporting marks and car numbers, nothing really fancy. Bought one of those sheets of letters of different sizes, thinking I'd do a few cars, wrong. I need the 1/8" letters for my reporting marks. My railroad name has a 'V' in it. Know how many v's there are in the 1/8" letter set?? 3. One and one half cars and I'm through. Okay, so actually I cut a W in half and finished both cars, but you get the idea. I'm going to use 5% of the letters and have lots left over with no use for them (future signs?). Maybe it's time to seriously consider custom decals.

Later

A T&A day...

Is... Okay for those of us who like to watch women...

if you liked watching their Eyes and Mouths (For instance) that would be a E&M day

I'm assuming you can now guess what a good T&A day is.

It's amazing that some "interests" know no international boundaries. Think I;ll go grocery shopping later for the wife-need a lot of stuff from the frozen food section. "It's summer time and the woman -er, the living is easy" (better known as halter and tank top season. . .)

Got to get off this Forum today, or take the PC outside, It's too beautiful a day to be in the office. Guess it's back to the shop downstairs and do some framing and wiring. Good thing I've got a big overhead door in the shop. Gotta go before my spouse catches me on the Forum again. . .Enjoy your day.

Hey Elliot,

Wasn't watching the Twins tonight rather painful? Of course we were at the game, and it was probably the ugliest of the season. I guess you would have to expect it though. The Chisox are a very good team and the Twins are really beat up.

The pitcher they just called up from the minors really looked it, and the replacements for Stewart, Koskie, Rivas and Mientkiewitcz just didn't fill their shoes, which of course you couldn't expect.

Hope the Twins get healthy soon!

I KNEW I shouldn't have let you off the couch in the corner.

What am I going to do with you? Mookie and I am going to have to have a long talk. I think Ed is shaking his head. You better hope that Christa doesn't see that. <BTW what was her email addy.>

NOW back to the corner. No talking to Dan either and NO chips, dips or beer.
