Thanks Ed and Fergie. If the photos go to the memory card by default, then I'll just take out the card before sending in the camera.

A start has been made on the lift out section for the mountain scenery at the "lightbox" or East end of the upper level tunnel. I hope it's going to be heavy enough not to move about when in place. At the moment it's just resting on some support piers. Lots of rock castings should help keep it in place[8D]
All this foundational work has to start way down on the lower level, and it all has to lift out to service the block occupancy detector, turnout, and lamp circuits that are down there. Fun Fun Fun [(-D]
Who knows, by the time I get the camera replaced (which is what Vivitar are offering) there may actually be progress to photograph.
Some 17 ladies expected tonight for Mrs. der's do. (she's hosting, not selling) I shall be WOTRR [:-^]

Before you blithely send off the camera, run by the photo shop and have them stick the chip in their computer. They can read the photos without burning them to CD, that way you can be sure instead of just trusting that they're not on the camera's internal memory.

For maintaining the lift out section in place you might want to think of some type of pin arrangement (tab/socket) rather than relying totally on weight. Vibration can move mountains.

Ed,
QUOTE: Packers not only need to improve their defense, but their offensive line needs to give Brett a little more protection. I thought a couple of his interceptions came because he was getting desperate to make things happen and tried forcing the ball in where he shouldn't have.

You don't watch Farve on a week to week basis for years, that's what he does all the time. He throws the ball where it's never gone before, and it usually works, but not lately. He's made some of his best plays that way. And yes, I have deiced to go with the Bears, for almost the exact same reason you said.

Jim, I have to agree with Fergie, no coal this christmas, or your birthday for that matter! I didn't get a darn one of those things. Grrrrrrrrrrr!r!

Jonathon, I used to be a NASCAR fan too, and still folow it some, but I don't watch every race. MY rooting interests? The hometown boy of course, Matt Kenseth. Used to be a JG fan, and still love his old paint scheme, but I devote more of my time to MRRing now. I've got about 50 1:64 scale race cars from my collecting days sitting around in my room in a case, as well as a few trucks.

Cloudy day today, got to eat Supper, finnish homework and Watch "Lost" Later tonight. Anybody else see this show? It's really good. One of the best horor/drama shows on in a while. I absolutely love it, one of the best I've seen. Well, getting hungry, see you all later!

Thanks Ed, I can do that tomorrow, sounds like a great idea.

I get your point. I'm just not sure how that will actually work out. So far this evening things have built themselves in some interesting ways. It looks like I'll have several smaller hatches, rather than one big lift off.
Anchoring the hatch lids may be quite easy in the way you suggest. I'm not too concerned yet about covering the joins, as I don't expect to be liftingthe lids every 5 minutes. I think I can get the hatch lids to sit down in like a plug. That should fix them OK. There's one that may need a bit more thought, but i'll come to that later.

Early start tomorrow, so I'll say Good Night, and God Bless one and all.

With the price of crude at over $54 a barrel I might need some coal to heat with, so go ahead and send "tons." [;)]

Well our latest forecast is really chilling. [:0] Rain, high 57 and low 42, it is currently 53 and the temp is falling, so I guess I will sleep in sweats tonight as I don't have the pilot light on the floor furnace lit yet. I purchased a small but older house and it has a floor furnance. It takes an act of God AND Congress to lite the thing. It is 330 am so I guess I will go take my nap. [8D]

I hear ya. My stove pipe is out being replaced as I rust out the old one once a year. Wet wood and poor burning practices. Not to worry I clean the chimney twice a year and the new pipe will be stainless steel.

Tom: you out there? Has Bob arrived? Let me know when the pics arrive please and thanks.

Well the order was sent out for the decals so now I have to wait and see what the damage will be. I am one again having issues with the turnout motors as the wiring is reversed and when you're talking seven wires and two switch machine in parallel going in opposite directions, then your talking [banghead][X-)] and it hurts!

Anyway the sun is shining so I must go to the garden.

Good Morning Everybody,
It's a gray, rainy, chilly morning in the mountains today. It's supposed to clear off later today and then get colder. That's OK, today is a railroad day.

The Teffys came by yesterday. We had a really good time. It was so nice to put faces with the words and spend some time getting to know each other better. After we got the ladies settled in the living room, Bob and I went to the basement and fired up the railroad. The railroad behaved itself very nicely, for which I was very grateful. The gremlins, both home grown and Texan, decided to stay away. Bill Mathewson came up from Canton and the three of us had a good time talking about what we're doing and what we want to do with the railroads. I picked several good ideas that I probably never would have thought of. The only problem was that they couldn't stay long enough. Bob wanted to go by Digitrax's office in Atlanta in the afternoon, and get over into Alabama before they stopped for the night. That will let them make it all the way home today. Everybody please keep them in your thoughts today, they have a long way to go today and not very good weather to drive through.

As Fergie mentioned in another post, this forum, and particularly the coffee shop, functions as a virtual club. As one who was active in clubs in another hobby, who loned wolfed it for a long time after getting into modelrailroading, and who is now active in a MR club and on the forum, this is a lot better. It's great to be able to talk with people literally all over the world who share the same interests. It's a lot more fun this way.

Fergie and Der, I'm glad you both came throught the latest storm OK, with just some clean up to do. There has been enough of that for one year.

Der, Teffy told me about the moveable layout section, on rollers and with a bookcase under it, that you use to bridge the doorway to your layout. Now that is a great idea. Please tell us more. I can't use it in the current RR room, but if the railroad grows in the future it sure might be useful.

Fergie, the pictures for Teffy haven't arrived yet. When they do, I'll forward them on to him.
We also have mountain laurels, azaleas, Rhodos ( lots of them) and Japanese maples. We don't have any tulip trees, but we do have lots of tulips planted.

I'm going to wrap it up for now and head to the railroad room. I need to replace that section of track on the Graham County that I wrote about a few days ago. The repair didn't hold, so I'll fix it for good this morning. Then it's time to hang the few remaining pieces of fascia board. I've also got the pieces for 3 Branchline coaches spread out on the workbench. They're Southern Rwy. cars and they need to be repainted and lettered before I build them. Out of the box they're a greenish brown which I think is the original color used when the cars were built in the 1920's, rather than the more commonly seen Pullman green. The Southern rebuilt and repainted these cars in 1947 and 48, so I need to fix that. It's going to be a really good day.
Have a great day everybody,
Tom

HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA...HA!!!! That is the funnies thing I've heard all day! low of 42 He He He! We've got lows in the low thirties up here, and your calling it cold! It didn't even get to 50 today! But were all used to it up here, so it's not that big a deal. Do you guys get any snow down there at all, or is it to far south for that?

Well, not much on the Wisconsin Front today. Just another gloomy, cloudy day, perfect for surfing the web. Not much else to add my two cents to today, so I think I'll keep on a movin'. See ya'll later

Have a look at the railimages site I've put in my signature. The reason it's built that way is that there are two levels of track to take across the doorway. I couldn't see an easy way to do that with a simple lift out or swing down/up section.
Sorry about the Yankee's win, B.Sox fans. As I said before, we don't get the games on TV. And even if we did, last night the TV was in off limits territory, and Mrs. der was attending to guests..

Bob, Welcome Home! Hope you aren't too tired.

Hi Gang; I just thought I'ed drop in and say hello. Not much happening here. John is out of the hospital and at his home. He still needs to rest and recoop. I've been working in the basement. Boy is cat hair hard to get up. I've vaccumed the layout twiceand still find hair in the loco mechs. Yup, after so many years it still runs. It's going to take a lot more work before I'll be able to get to some serious modeling. I have started to re-draw the plans so I'll have something to go by when I can get back to mrr-ing.

The weather here is starting to get colder. 40s this morning and high 60s during the day. Yes Noah, I know that isn't cold in Wisc, but here in Tex it sure feels good. We do get some snow here. When it does everything shuts down. Folks can't handle it. I stay home because I can't see trying to go and get clobbered by someone who hasn't been in snow.

I finished mowing that 15 acres today. Had to use the big tractor. The 25 horse didn't have enough to get through the thick stuff. One thing about working in the fields is I can train watch to. Most of our fields are bordering the U.P. main. When a train sneeks up behind you and he hits the horn for our crossing it cal really get the blood flowing quick.

Well Good Night to you one and all. And thanks for being the great group that you are.

Paul

I am glad to hear your son is home.

Noah

I WAS going to send you to the couch in the corner but then I remember who I have sent there before. [;)] Kevin (from the trains.magazine forum), Dan H, and I think Carl (CShaveRR) is there too. Kevin would just corrupt you and with Dan around you would think it (being corrupted) was funny. So I have changed my mind you must DEFINATELY stay off the couch in the corner. Beside either Dan or Kevin one said they were bringing beer and you are too young to drink. Cherokee Women sent someone to the couch but I don't remember who. Mookie also sent someone to the couch, maybe Carl, but it was a while back and I can't really remember who all is there.

Now to answer your question--snow--we do get some snow. It snowed last winter. The flakes were very wet and large however, the air temp was actually above freezing and even though it was snowing "to beat 60" it melted about as fast as it fell. When it does stick it only stays for a day maybe 2 at the most. Once in a while we do get a big snowstorm. Back in January 1988, we had a 13 inch snowfall, EVERYTHING was shut down for about 2 days. Many people here do not know how to drive on snow. You are much better off SAFE at home than trying to drive here with people who drink 60 mph is a safe driving speed on snow. We also had an ice storm about 3 years ago. My power was off about 6 days. I didn't have any lights but did have heat thanks to the floor furnance. I also lost all the food in the icebox. [:(]

Speaking of being corrupted . . . I saw a post from Adrian tonight. I think Kevin (the RR Man) has influenced him also. Poor Adrian was suspose to be studying but study seemed to be more of the girls than school work. But boys will be boys, won't they guys? [;)]

Well almost time to take a nap.

Oh, our definately NO OVERTIME is back to definately overtime. I did OT last night and tonight. Plus they are saying we will work Saturday, maybe Sunday.

Noah [8D]

It is 43 degrees and I am cold. Someone send coal, please. [;)] [:D]

You know a nice big skillet of sausage gravy sounds REAL good right now, got biscuits? [:p] [:D] [;)]

Good Evening All:

We are finally home. We traveled 6,003 miles, saw some great layouts and some very pretty scenery. We got about half of the car unpacked and said "the heck with it we'll do it tomorrow". I find it hard to believe that while I was gone the coffee shop went from 111 pages to 130, I've got a lot of reading to do.

I can't express enough appreation for the hospitality and great visits. I've gotten several ideas for solutions to some of my problems. I'm going to share them with all of ya'll and let the creater fill in the details. I've found out that when I do something I don't think of it as anything great or good and I don't understand why anyone else couldn't do it. I'm going to get each of the guys that I borrowed ideas from to put their two cents in and explain what they did and how they did it (if they will co-operate). Every layout that I saw had something that I can use in my layout, it was a very productive trip.

It was interesting to put a face and body with the posts. Some are nothing like you expect. Jim is a precise person that takes some beautiful pictures. The ones that he was showing me, I thought were taken by a professional photographer until, he told me that he'd taken them. John and Tom are almost two peas in a pod as far as body sizes and degree of modeling dexteriety. They are both interested in getting it done exactly right and not being in a hurry. I could identify with Fergie as he has facial hair and I used to. It gives you an extra 15 minutes to sleep in the morning since you don't have to shave. Bill is laid back and I would liked to have had more time to talk to him as we were just getting started when I realized that I'd have to get on the road. Before I left, we did do a toast to LUPO.

Paul:
You're next, but we need to rest a little bit first. We thought about leaving here on a Sat morning and visiting Sat afternoon and then coming back to Buffalo for the night as I've got an aunt that lives there.

Ed:
How is the railroad coming along or is that in the pages that I haven't read yet?

Noah:
Where do you come to visit in Louisiana? I live on the east side of Texas so we are only about 4 1/2 hours from New Orleans, or 3 1/4 hours from Baton Rouge. We are about 4 hours from Shreveport so I don't see why we couldn't arrange a visit the next time you and your family come to LA. Ed is coming to see me the next time he comes to Houston. (Did you read that Ed?)

Well I'm going to bed and get ready for work tomorrow.

Ya'll have a blessed day and remember SANTA FE ALL THE WAY

Bob: Good to see you made it safe and sound and in one piece. I have a couple of shots to send you. Lisa wouldn't let me shave if I wanted to any way. I don't think you'ld recognize me anyway as I just had the top trimmed and the ears raised. I feel human again! BTW I'm having a cuppa outta my new "Texas Tea Cup" ( for the curious ones, think 10 gallon hat and you're in the right ball park)

Paul: Glad to see your son is on the mend and man it must be rough having a main line by your spread!

Well it's a rain day day here so you know what that means...... I'm bound for the basement to see if I can straighten some wire and not burn myself with the soldering iron again (darn thing landed in my "lap" the other day, I haven't moved that quick in ages!!!

Bob, First of all, glad to have you back!! And we usually go to New Orleans, I have an aunt that lives there with her family. We rotate between there and relatives in San Fransico, so next year (2006) will be N.O., this year (2005)is San Fran. (and Austrailia, I'm finally getting off this continent next summer).

Well, It's Friday everybody!!! Freedom!!! (please, do not remind me that Moday is two days away, or...........well.........nevermind.) Tomarrow I got to Madison, hope to finally make it to the LHS, and want to go to the WSOR yard. Then comes Sunday, Which means The MALPM will be up here. Forgot to mention last week that I got to go chasing it last Sunday, got some nice video of it crossing the bridge that's in My Photo of the Day.

Oh, and in one knew anouncement, I have decided to add a photo of the week feature to my Website. I will post a new picture on the homepage hopefully about once a week. I've got the first one on there now. Check it out if you get a chance, the picture was from last week while train chasing. www.freewebs.com/wsor3807

Well, better keep on a moving,

Teffy; Welcome home. Be it ever so humble there's no place like home. We will expect a full report, but will give you a chance to relax. OK , that's long enough. Just kidding.

Noah, LIked your picture of the week, WSOR has a nice paint scheme, not as good as Milw Rd. or C&NW though.

DIMR230; Glade to see you in the coffee shop. As some of the guys have said " First cups on the house." I'll be looking forward to seeing more of you photos.

Fergie; All I can say is OUCH! Well it's late and I have to work tomorow. Paul

Good Evening everyone: Just checking in before heading for bed.

Ed and Fergie: The memory card is out of the camera, and the contents downloaded very slickly through my new printer! (The Lexmark 65 decided to want both paper feed trays active at the same time, and spends it's days gazing at its navel, ignoring the computer it's attached to, and the rest of the world. It has been replaced by an Epson printer, flatbed scanner and copier all in one on special at Staples [aka Office Depot, I think])
So, I'll be able to put up photos of how the mountains are beginning.

Bob:
QUOTE: John and Tom are almost two peas in a pod as far as body sizes and degree of modeling dexteriety.

That would of course be Normal rather than HorriblyOversized! [:O][;)]
Glad you made it home safely. The Fall colours peaked here this week, and are fading now. Mind you, rain doesn't help keep them sharp, and yes, we have had rain.....[V]
It let up long enough today for us to plant an acacia hedge (that is if the bits we pruned from a larger than it needed to be transplant take next spring where we've pushed them in the earth), and to dig up some of our artichokes. (that's the tuber type). They were absolutely delicious with dinner this evening. [C=:-)] [dinner] Since your visit, our kitchen has gained a window (yesterday, done in a day. [^])

How about the way the highways department in (I think) Fort Saskachewan outside Edmonton, Alberta deal with their mowing problem for the intersections etc. on major highways.....sheep![^]

Noah: Nice shot of the local. The foreshortening and the curve has me wondering. What's the first car?

Let's see if I can get railimages to co operate and give a shot of the tunnel progress.

OK. Now I can go to bed! [zzz]

6003 miles = almost 10,000 in Canadian (I mean, in kilometres) WOW [bow]

John - the only trouble with sheep is that we already have the Wile E coyotes, but RoadRunners don't grow in our soil, or maybe I'm just Looney, time to change my Tunes, I guess.[C):-)][C):-)][C):-)][(-D][C):-)]
- sheep might happen next year actually, I have a few sources (see also link to insomnics)

coffee time, I'm buying the free refills

cheers, krump

Morn' All [8D]

Well our Overtime that is on/off/on/off/on/off/on/off/on/off/on is now off again. I do wish I could find that "coin" our management must be flipping and drop in down the coke machine (it is quite the bandit it is [:(!] )

Guess what? [?] I bought a can of biscuits tonight (this morning at 2 am). I have "talked" myself into a nice breakfast of homemade sausage gravy with some canned biscuits. [:D] [;)] [:D] [:p] [:p] (Sorry Paul [;)] ) It might be about 10 am before I have breakfast since I eat late (after work).

Fergie [:)]

We have "holders" at work, for our soldering irons. They work much better than your lap. Try it, you might like it. [}:)] [;)] <Jim is running for cover [;)] >

Noah [:p]

Now that I think of it there is a nice booth over in the corner (Depot Dinner and Coffee Shop). You can bring your transfer caboose and Scott's turbine can pull it around the layout in the dinner. (That is if I don't have my Spectrum Mountain pulling some Frisco heaveyweight passenger cars. [:p] )

Going to Austrailia . . . you lucky dog you. [:p]

Mitchell Legg ( GDRMCo ) lives there. You might email him as he is about your age. Also there are at least two other forum members I can think of from there. You might post a thread about going there and ask about railfan places. You might be able to actually meet some of the forum members who live there. That would be a nice trip. Just remember to keep the car windows up as that first mud puddle is kinda deep. [;)]

John [:D]

About floor furnances . . . I am not sure they are even made anymore. But the principle of operation is basically convection heating, the floor furnace is usually installed in a smaller home as it does not have a fan to force the air anywhere. It is installed below floor level with a "grate" over the furnance. It works on a thermostat just as a forced air furnance would but remember no forced air, convection heating. When it is "on" you cannot stand on the grate as it is way too hot. Duchess is now 2 years and 4 months olds, and I had to block the "hall" where the furnance is because she was bad (when younger) about pulling the blankets off the bed and dragging them around the house. So you can see that under certain circumstances that it is a real fire hazzard. I don't have a basement but under some of the house I can somewhat stand up. The hot water heater and floor furnance are both in that area. I hope this gives you an idea of what it is and how it works. It is "fired" by natural gas.

When I was little I remember seeing the "coal bin" under the house where my grandma lived. There were still some very tiny pieces of coal and a lot of coal dust in it. However she had stopped using coal to heat with years before I was "there" [;)] .

Bob [8D]

I am glad you are now home safe and sound. I know that after a trip of that duration you must be tired. I don't know if you heard about it or not but we had a tour bus wreck near the Arkansas Tennessee border that killed 15 people. It was a family owned tour group (only had the one bus). The owner was home in Chicago but his wife and brother (I think) were on the bus with the brother driving. They were headed for one of the casinos for the weekend but the bus failed to negotiate a curve and left the road. I thought of you and your business when I heard about the wreck. It also reminded me of the saying, "There but by the Grace of God go I." That might not be exactly the correct saying but I think it conveys the appropriate thought.

Well the rain has stopped. We had some sun this afternoon and the temps were in the mid 60s. If you stood in the sun it felt nice and would have been a good day for outdoor work. Now it is 3 am and about 53 degrees. Our forecast is calling for temps in the 70s again. I will clean out the floor furnance but am not sure about lighting it just yet. I do have a small electric heater which I did use last night. It takes the chill off of one room and is better than nothing. It also has a small compartment for water so I can add humidity to the air, which is a good thing for winter as the heat dries out the air (and skin).

Well Duchess is giving me that "I am lonely" look so I guess I need to give her some attention.

Everyone take care (and stay warm).

Signed

Jim[:(] Both iron and holder came tumbling down as I caught a cord while negotiating with a swtch machine! Both were hot but the iron was hotter!!!

I have electric baseboard heat and a very large wood stove 125,000 btu, which we use as our primary. Electric heat is a killer on the pocket book. And if I loose power we're still good for heat and cooking.

I'm off to Truro
