FINALLY, I'm getting an airbrush!!!
It's a Paasche model VL that I got out of a tool magazine for under $60!!!

I need to get some tools from Micro-Mark too, plus paint, couplers and wheelsets fro mthe LHS in Alton. There is also a really good hardware store in Wood River (now only St. Louis/Alton locals know where I'm talking about!?) that sells some modeling tools (I got a good set of needle files there for $4 once, I hope they have lots of #80 drill bits, I need a good set of drill bits), I need to get a soldering iron, among other things, hopefully that store will have them.

SO right now as you can see I'm at that stage in the hobby where you have the skill to do a lot of things, but no tools to do them with.

Dave Lotz (not a member of the forums, but you can see some of the stuff he sells at www.qconnection.bizhosting.com.) has gotten me into wood kits, once I have my airbrush set up and I know how to use it, I'll give resin a try.

BTW, on that Q Connection link you will find more Burlington Route heralds than you have ever seen-just what I like!

UPDATE July 2004

Hi All [:)]

I am off this weekend and between house cleaning, working on the truck, steam cleaning the carPETS (appropriate huh ? ) dishwashing, laundry, mowing the yard, and various other odds and ends, I am going to try to finish studying for the "General" test. I hope to take it Monday, maybe Tuesday.

Then I can begin the study for the "Powerplant" test. I make a cassette tape and listen to it while driving. I am off next Thursday and Friday and will be heading to Missouri. I will listen to the new tape as I drive there and back.

finally finished the second siding in my central industrial area its completely cosmetic but man it looks good its also a good veiw block so you dont just look straight through, its a bit of a major undertaking for me as i used nails [:O] and brass track as i have run out of nickel silver you cant tell though

You are defintely not going wrong with a Paasche air brush.
I've had the same one for over4 0 years,and it's STILL going.

Airframe and Powerplant licenses issued by the FAA.

Those licenses are required to become an inspector where I work.

Good Afternoon Everybody,
It has been a really good day in the mountains today. The coffee this morning was wonderful. We had a nice lazy morning and then went plant shopping at a nursery that Louise found a while back. It's well off any beaten path and quite a ways from the house, but it was worth the trip. We picked up a few more ground cover plants for around the pond, and another Black Magic Taro plant which I really like. The cool thing about the day, however, is that they have some absolutely beautiful bonsai'd japanese maple "Red Dragon" trees. Louise's birthday is in a couple of weeks and they are holding one for me. It will be a big surprise. The grill is warming up for the steaks, the potatos are in the oven. After dinner I'm off to the basement to run trains for a while.

Christopher, you'll be pleased with the Pasche VL. It's a very good reliable brush. I've got a lot of friends who have used them for years and love them. Micro-Mark is a really good place to buy tools. I can't of anything I've gotten from them that I've not been pleased with. I think you'll like the resin kits when you try them. They take time but there are a lot of fun.

Jim, good luck on the test. Let us know how it goes. I'll admit I have no clue what the "2" is about. Hope it's good.

Folks, I just want to say that I really enjoy it here in the coffee shop. Good coffee, good conversation with nice people. There is a lot of anger out there in the world, and quite a bit in other parts of this forum. Too much for a hobby forum in my opinion. This is nice, and very enjoyable.

Hey guys,

Just a quick check in to let you know how things have been going on the trip and that I haven't either died or abandoned the coffee shop. It's just been tougher that I expected to log in while on the road (and DW has been giving me the evil eye every time I suggest that I really need to check in).

One word........WOW.

Actually I could write much more about the trip on the C&T but haven't got the time right now. Did take about 150 pictures, maybe after editing and culling about 30-40 should be worth keeping. It was great. Neat old 2-8-2 steaming up front, the smell of the coal smoke, great scenery, friendly crew. I really enjoyed it. I spent the entire trip in the open air gondola they have.

Even junior thought it was okay, although after lunch he started to think it was getting a bit long ("Are we there yet?").

We even stayed at the "Narrow Gauge Railroad Inn" in Antonito. They have two restaurants in town, both Mexican. Question, do they call Mexican food in Colorado Col-Mex? It was okay, different but okay.


I may need to look for a summer place in either Chama or Antonito. This is a really nice area, even without the trains.

Noah - I ran into a father and son team from Wisconsin (I think they said Richland Center, or something like that - mid way between Madison and LaCrosse?). They were doing a heavy duty railfanning week. They left Wisconsin last Friday, made it to Colorado to ride the Durango and Silverton on Sunday, the Cumbres and Toltec on Tuesday, then they planned on doing the Georgetown Loop, the Royal Gorge train, and the Pike's Peak train, plus the Colorado State Railroad Museum, before hading back home this weekend. Talk about a full schedule!

We were at Mesa Verde National Park on Thursday. We're currently in Moab, Utah to see Arches and Canyonlands NP's, then next Thursday we do the Durango and Silverton.

Sorry about not commenting on other posts, but I'm trying to get this in before I lose the line. Keep up the good work, keep that coffee flowing. I'll check back in when I can.

I model a free lance line that supposedly runs from Providence, Rhode Island to Bridgeport, Connecticut. It's based on what I think the New Haven (NY, NH & H) would have been like in 1999 if the PRR merger and later mergers hadn't happened.

Ed, I know right where richland center is. Were about 45 minutes from it. My Dad grew up twenty miles from there in Hillsboro WI, so I know the area fairly well. Did you get any names?

That Brewers game I mentioned was fantastic. A five nothing shut out, just bueatiful pitching and alot of good hitting. poor Ken Griffey Jr. Got hurt again though, diving after a ball in center field. Didn't get back home till one in the morning, so I'm only half awake. It was awfully fun though.

It was a very laid back day in the mountains today. There wasn't much "progress" on anything today. But it was still a wonderful day. We started off with really good coffee and the time to enjoy it. Spent the afternoon visiting with some of Louise's relatives who are also good friends. It made for a very good relaxing time.

YNCS, welcome to the coffee shop. The coffee is always on and it's always good. So are the other drinks and the food. The conversation is good too. Incidently, I like the concept for your railroad. Changing history a little bit to model a railroad in more recent times opens up a fascinating group of possibilities. Tell us more.

Jim, good luck on your test. We're all sure you will do very well, and we're all pulling for you.

For those who might be wondering, dharmon asked if I was in the Navy. My response is that I was a submariner in the Navy. I'm a retired YNCS(SS), USN, which translates thusly:

YN - Yeoman, an admin and personnel specialist
CS - Senior Chief Petty Officer, the second highest enlisted rank. Yes, you'd think it would be SC, but that's the Navy for you.
(SS) - Qualified in submarines.
