Happy New Year to all.

I'm a tea drinker as well. But then I am a Brit so what else?

Looking at the front page of the forum today it looks as if some sensitive types have decided to up and leave. I think it just goes to prove that what you get out of any human interaction is directly proportional to the quality of the input you provide. I am certainly no MRR expert and can't often add much to a thread as far as expertise, but enjoy this place greatly due to the willingness of everyone to chip in with thoughts and ideas on any topic. I look forward to enjoying 2005 with you lot.

Now off to the train room to see if my real dirt road has dried. I managed to bake and sift 2 large cookie trays of dirt yesterday afternoon without annoying the wife!!

Chris, your right, and as I write this, the darn thing is playing on the TV next to me! AHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!![:O][:O] Really, though you keep rolling out with good stuff, I think you'll have it weeded through by the time you get to a proper layout.

In here early, I like comming in to a fresh pot, but school won't alow it.[:(] I guess I'll just have to stick with afternoons till the summer, then I can come in early. But, I got to finni***he forums, so I guess I'll be going for now. See ya!

HAPPY NEW YEAR everybody.

simon1966: Make that two orders for oatmeal raisin.[:D]

Well, guys, I've finally settled on a paint scheme for my VBR locos. I'll post a picture after I upload it to my site. And I'm now owner, president, CEO, and everything else for the VBR.

May I add my HAPPY NEW YEAR? We had our usual(it's getting to be traditional) foursome for UNO, then an added attraction this year, fireworks from a small package that was a birthday present. (fired off two then, three last night, and the rest are being saved for when the grandkids finally make it over this week end or next) Then back to our friends for bubbly and meat pie, etc. In bed by 1:15. No gunfire, I'm glad to report. As to reloading spent shells, I thought that once fired, the shell case expanded and wouldn't fit in the breach any more. At least, when I tried that as a cadet in school with a 3.03 Lea Enfield, I got the thing jammed in the breach and instantly into hot water with the RSM[:O][:I] That's got to be about 50 years ago now, but I doubt the physics has changed that much.

Bob:
QUOTE: The more refined drink HOT TEA, like John and I.
I like coffee too, which is what makes this place so enjoyable. There's two reasons we drink more coffee here than we did in England. First, the coffee is so much better here than it was in the UK when we were there (that's up to 1967). Secondly, it's very hard to get a decent cup of tea in a restaurant. One has to be specific and ask for the bag to be put in the pot BEFORE the hot water (it's never boiling as it should be). Often this request is met with a blank stare of horified disbelief! [:O] The exception is Tim Hortons brewed tea. Available in the Maritimes, and now we hear also in Ontario. That's quite good. So, Simon ([#welcome] BTW) if you are unable to get a good cuppa in Troy, you'll just have to move up here! [(-D]

The Full Moon high tide of a few nights ago did more than float our canoe into the marsh. (Got it emptied of ice and water as soon as we had a bit of a thaw two days ago. It's now high and dry, and where the wind will have a tougher job flipping it, we hope.) We have a section of dock that we had left more or less where we wanted it, but not secured. Up to now the high tide has not been a problem. This time, however, tide was higher than any of the locals can recall seeing it. Our "dock" fetched up on the other side of the lagoon! Our neighbour across the street saw it there when he was out walking the dog. So, he got his truck, and we've spent the late morning dragging it up to higher ground. We plan to get the canoe across there in the Spring, and tow the section back home. Next time we'll make sure it can only go up and down, not sideways!

Noah:
QUOTE: Der, enjoy the 2005 GMR, it's really good. I got mine from the LHS a few weeks ago.

Actually, Im finding it a bit depressing. Seems that those layouts are so far ahead of what I can hope for. Also, I get the impression that unless you have space for lots of people, don't bother to apply. I don't want to [soapbox]here, but can't a layout be great without being HUGE and HUGELY EXPENSIVE?
I'll just go and do the washing up as a penalty for the first rant of the year.[:I][:-,]

Simon
QUOTE: I managed to bake and sift 2 large cookie trays of dirt yesterday afternoon without annoying the wife!!
I've found that having your own set of equipment for this sort of thing makes all the difference when it comes keeping the peace! Also, scheduling such tasks outside meal preparation time has been known to yield better results. [(-D] [C=:-)] BTW, [#ditto] for the Oatmeal Rasin, but can you make mine sugar free please?[:D]

May get a little more done on the layout if I can get away from here [:D]

Evenin' all. Here's that picture.

I call it our, tri-stripe scheme.

Mick (GDRMCo) , to your questions awhile back. Not at the moment. The VBR has been shutdown, I've bought the line, and has started it back up. We, however, may call upon you in the future. Sorry, for the delayed response to your posts.

Robert,

I just did a google search for free animated gifs "happy new year" and these turned up.

Then I saved them to my free hosting site at imagecave.

There's all sorts of fun stuff out there -- and best of all, much of it is free! [:D]

Jim,

I would never even think that I could outdo lupo. He is the master. I'm merely the student. [^]

I know what you mean about people shooting off guns and such. Last night at midnight, as soon as the clock turned, the police sirens started too as they responded to all sorts of silliness. Happily, no indicents in our neck of the woods.

Hi all!

My first post here of 0'5...

GP60 update (yeah, it's been a while):

I soldered and painted the handrails, but no pic...

My AC4400 is taking up some of my time, the layout is taking up the rest. and I forgot to get some parts at the LHS, so it'll be awhile until another update.

Karl; Are you a throttle jockey? We've got an A-10 driver up in Penn, and I used to fly Hueys in the Army. That was about a million years ago. Seems like modeling an abandoned railroad would save alot of track work.

I'm an Electronic Countermeasures Officer in EA-6B Prowlers - which is pretty much equal parts co-pilot, navigator, WSO... beats making an honest living.

[:p] On my "abandoned railroad" idea, I was sort of thinking along the lines of "what if it HADN'T been abandoned" ! Though you might be onto something - I could build a former station that's now the town chamber of commerce, then park an old locomotive in front of it in the town park!! Nah, what fun would THAT be?

What I'm sort of leaning towards now (though there's still lots of time to work it all out) is based on the premise of the then-BN and UP setting up a joint venture to relieve traffic on their routes over the Cascades by using Milwaukee's old route (before it got turned into a trail). The two railroads have some kind of joint venture in Eastern Oregon and Idaho so it's not totally without precedent. I want the joint venture to have its own identity so I can have the fun of coming up with my own paint schemes, but since it's owned by both railroads I can have a great excuse for running plenty of their stuff as well.

But, of course, it will be a while yet before I'm settled down enough to actually start building - so stay tuned as things evolve! [;)]

Hi Paul, thank you for the welcome mat!!! My scale will be HO, I have already bought some engines, and have some cars from back in 70's when my boys got their 1st set from Santa. We had no room to set up a permanent display at that time, but now the three boys and one daughter are all married and out of the house, so I have a nice 11 X26 room downstairs to use!!! I plan to model the old B&A, as well as the mountain division of the B&M/MEC. I also may do a layout of the Alaska RR which I rode from Seward to Anchorage, and Anchorage to Fairbanks in 2001, I highly recommend this trip for anyone who can make it, the scenery is beyond anything that I can possibly say in words. I also did the White Pass RR from the Yukon to Skagway, Alaska, this had unbelievabe bridges over gorges, it is a narrow guage RR. I have to stud the walls of the room, electrical wiring, etc, etc. b efore I start the tables, but being retired, NO PROBLEM!!
Right now I am anxious to attend the RR show at the BIG E in Springfield, Ma the end of this month!!

Have a Happy and Healthy New Year Paul[:D][:D][:D]

One thing to keep in mind about the quote button is that it will quote the entire post. So if it was a long post, and you only want to comment on a particular part of it, please delete out the parts of the original post that aren't necessary (by highlighting/cutting or simply using the delete key in your response).

AMEN Fergie.

Karl; Hay sounds like a great job. Let the other guy do the work and enjoy the ride. OK, My toung was way over in my check.

Your idea for your railroad sounds very interesting and plausable. I'm a Milwaukee fan. I was born and raised in Milwaukee and misspent much of my youth watching the C&NW and the MILW RD. Now I'm modeling a freelance ore hauling railroad in upper Michigan.

***; I know what you mean about those rides up way north. Maybe when we retire the wife and I will go up there and do a few. The old B&A was an interesting railroad. They had some good looking locomotives and operated in an interesting area. Asto the welcome mat. It's always out. We like new blood and ideas here. Helps to keep everthing interesting.

Robert; Looks good and it came through the first time.

Jdolan; OK, Whats you secret? My wife says "You seen one . You seen them all." Come on now share.

Der; I know what you mean. GMR does that to me to alittle. It does give me some incentive.

Evenin' Y'all,

Just lettin everyone know I'm still alive[:D]! I keep thinking I'll get back in here on a regular basis, but things keep coming up.

[#welcome] To all the new guys, i have some catching up to do on here, I'll try to get in touch with some of you.

Well, no gunfire here, but we had a real good time last night. Went to Oklahoma City for the Opening Night celebration. Had a good show with a record turnout. The celebration is in downtown, right by the train tracks, that was the best part. I saw nearly a dozen BNSF trains in four hours!!! I got to see a bunch of paint jobs I hadn't seen in real life before. They had a BN, SF, a few BNSF pumpkins, one BNSF executive, a couple BNSF warbonnets, and several BNSF Heritages (that's the prettiest!!). Those things move a whole lot faster than the local UP, which goes about 55, and the AT&L which goes about 15. Anyway, it was impressive to someone use the the AT&L.

Robert: Loco's lookin good

Hope everyone has a great 2005!
I'll see y'all later,

Happy New Year to all you Coffee Clubbers, including the new people (and returnees)!

Phil (ROTFLMAO!) - Fergie just might be able to do all that on a roller coaster...[swg] Fergie, as they might say, 'You the man'...[:D]

Karl (Kolja94), Welcome, Nor'Westerner! Your idea of the 'abandoned' line would have some problems with operation, perhaps...[;)]

Jim, good pics! I'd agree on the insanity of firing into the air - luckily, didn't have much of that around me last night. So if you were the first to post for the year, does that mean you get to buy the first round of drinks? [;)]

Teffy, I've been thinking about breaking/re-designing my plan into smaller modules that I can move more easily and maybe even connect them up different ways. Something like a 2'X4' or 18"X4' section, with some corner sections, too. Now, how to modify, let's see the Jerome & SWestern into modules....?

Simon, I bet you're glad they stock Earl Gray and several other varieties here at the C.S.[:)] I sure hope you didn't use your wife's cookie sheets... [C=:-)] I think Der's about right on that.

[#welcome] ***/Grayfox - From another HO'er who has been away for a long time and is now getting back into MRR'ing again (like you).

Trainwreck100 - Good to 'hear' from you again! Hope you've been able to get some work on your MRR stuff while you were away.

Tom, were there only 3 of 4 pages? These guys must have been slacking![;)]

Hope everyone has a blessed and very productive 2005,

Jim

My wife thinks of the layout as a 3-D picture and loves to build the scenery to enhance the trains and buildings. My 2 teenage daughters also help with the layout, 1 likes scenery the other likes to build kits of cars and buildings. It is a family project.

Thanks Jim and Paul. I have so much to catch up on, I hardly know where to start![sigh]
I need to select track code, what manufacturer, the same for switches, what type of sub base , I know that I should use the largest radius turns that I can fit. Man, I'm sleepy from reading a lot of info[|)], up til 2 am this morning ringing in 2005, running wires in the walls for connecting side-surround speakers for the home theater this afternoon, and look at time, midnight !!! I'm off to bed guys, from the New England, good night gentlemen!! See ya tomorrow for morning coffee,

Good Evening All:

I'm going to take some pictures of my completed Campbell bridge and then everyone can ooooh and aaaah. It only took two days of enjoyment to build the thing after the staining is done.

John:
About 10 years ago we took my mother and dad out to dinner. Mom was in the mood for some "hot" tea so that's what she ordered. I kid you not, they brought her a GLASS of tea with no ice cubes. In New England we have been told that ice tea was out of season.

I like Tim Hortons and stopped at many of them when we came to see you. As a matter of fact out first breakfast was at the TH in Yarmouth just after we got off the ferry.

Simon:
I used a frying pan to dry out some dirt and found out - don't use a teflon coated pan as the dirt will scratch the finish.

I've also gotten a BLI light mikado up and running in the last few days. It's the Southern #4501 in green and gold paint. When they announced the paint schemes, both the numbers for the Southern were in green. Somebody advised them that wasn't accurate, so they redid the two in the 4700 series into black and brought out the 4501 in green. It was nice to see that they responded, and very quickly. Is the 4501 accurate for my time period - nope, not even close. The passenger power, mountains and pacifics, were green and gold. The freight hogs were black. When the Southern put the 4501 into excursion service in the mid 70's, they painted it in the passenger scheme. Do I care that it's not accurate? Surprisingly little. It's so pretty. the paint, and particularly the striping and emblems are beautifully done. It really looks good pulling the Branchline coaches. If I'd been running the Southern, there would have been a lot more green locomotives, but the one in the basement is my railroad....

Tom

Look at the framed slogan that I gave you!!!!

By the way how fast did the PS-4's run when they were in their heyday. Was 100+ mph realistic?

***:
I thought that when the two boys got married and moved out, they were gone - WRONG. I finally took over their room so they had nowhere to come back to but one of them was happy just to sleep on the couch. Finally we moved next door and I got one of the upstairs bedrooms for the train and one of the downstairs bedrooms is the guest room and it probably has had the boys for more "guests" then eveyone else put together.

Ya'll have a blessed day and a happy new year and remember SANTA FE ALL THE WAYBob

Morning All [:)]

I have been doing things today to help organize myself for the coming year, well the year that just started I mean. [;)] I used to be real organized but when I started going to school full time AND working 50 to 60 hours a week organization fell by the wayside. This is not a new years resolution just something that needs to be done.

Tonight I got to meet (by instant messanger) another Canadian Modeler. Oh John and Ed, he models in Nearly Invisible scale. Then later I got to introduce him to one of his fellow Canadians who lives in the next provence over. Isn't the internet neat, how it brings people with like interest together?

Well got to run. [8D]

Have a super day.

Greyfox- I'll definitely have to agree on the Alaska RR. We did a family trip up there when I was in the 7th grade - took the RDCs to Seward, and also rode from Anchorage up to Denali Park. I recall spending as much time as I possibly could out on the vestibules!

Paul - where in Milwaukee did you live? Like I said introducing myself (or at least meant to!) I spent 4 years there, but I was pretty much right downtown, either in Marquette dorms or a studio on 15th just off Wells. Thanks to a young lady I did make it off campus - she had family in the Washington Heights area and also in West Allis. Last time I was there was a few years ago for a wedding - hope to return sometime sooner rather than later... some really friendly folks I would love to catch up with still live there.

Care to ship some of that incentive up here? It's days since I started that tiny ballasting job, and it's still going by fits and starts. I kid myself that it's a research project now, and do each little section by a different technique, so as to compare the results before deciding on the "right" way to do the main part of the layout. I think that's a whole lot of my trouble, feeling that there is a set of rules that must be followed. I should look at the framed notice bob left here, and remember that it's my railroad! [(-D] Just remembered I didn't wash out the paint brush I've been using to paint on white glue (technique 47a), so had better get to that before it dries. [:O] Besides, smells like lunch below..[dinner] Today it's turkey ***, green beans, Brussel sprouts, carrots, turnips, parsnips, roast potatoes, stuffing, and of course gravy with the water saved from the veggies. Dessert will feature the pineapple we got for the grandkids. It won't keep until they do visit. Elliot, the food in this shop is NOT LOUSY! [:D]
