OK I've read up to 196 and thought there was a fight in the making[:O] This here is a respectable drinking establishment NO NO NO. This thing about canned air, well now thinking you're special. Have I got news for you. Betcha can't get a can of Fog where you're from... Can you! Well I can. And since we're on the topic of weather I actually wouldn't mind a bit of the white stuff to give it the holiday feeling. We're stuck with fog and more fog. It's wet and muggy here and it feels more like April/May!

Back to the painting thing. I did a fair bit of painting this past two weeks. I actually painted about 24 cars/hoppers, etc. I didn't use a spray gun, but paint out of a can and well it's like this. I shoulda, woulda and coulda used a gun but I opted not to. Some cars are good some , not so good. It comes down to what you have on hand. I hate using:
spray guns- because you spend more time cleaning them.
Spray Cans- because they aren't consistant
Compressed air in a can because they are expensive and run out when you least expect it.
Compressors- Because they are noisy and unless you can regulate pressure they can cause lots of grief. There is also the issue of air humidity. Too humid and you have a disaster!

John Thanks for the come back I'll call Maritime Hobby and see if they have some or equivalent.

Phil: The weather wasn't too bad, Had gales for a day during one call but nothing serious though it did topple my Christmas Tree, The horror[V]

[#welcome] Glad you dropped in and as Paul says we answer all types of questions, some of them even correctly. If you ask the wrong question our reseident wrong question guy (egmurphy) will tell you where to go. But he does it very descretely. I thing he does it because he doesn't know the answer. Is that right Ed? You will also be exposed to history , anchent and current. But we do have a lot of people that can't sppell, and sometimes their grammor is wrong, but we have a good time anyway. I drink a lot of tea so sometimes I'm out of place but I still have a good time.

Your decoders were mailed today through the Post Office. I went upstairs and put four card pluggers on the tortise box as you appreantly forgot to order them. I put one on each end of the card to guide it on to the tortise. You owe me big time for those expensive plugs.

You can do like Tom and I do and just paint at the garage door and let the whole outside be your paint booth. It works very well, but then for me I only have two weeks of winter. This year looks a lot different.

I can't find my receipt from the post office so you'll have to look at the stamps. I also sent you some more instructions to ex[plain the decoders and the AR1.

[C=:-)] I made a new pot of coffee from the new sack of coffee I see Lupo or Fergie must have brought in with them. Tastes good - Jamaican Blue Mountain? - it's pretty good! Now, I thought I saw some blueberry muffins earlier...

It's been another day, another 10 or so inches (or about 25 cm. for those on metric) of sNoah last night. The wind chill and outside temp puts it at an effective -7 F. Me, I hope to stay in today and tonight and work on my layout plans.

Looks like the Ohio River Valley caught as much sNoah as we did, too. So Lupo, I'd bet you can have all the snow you want to take![;)] Now if we had some well-insulated boxcars or reefers or insulated hoppers, we might be able to send you enough for a snowman in your yard... Or you could ask Sean to send you all the foam sNoah he's accumulating.[;)][:D]

[bow] Fergie, I too am impressed at how much you are getting done on your cars, even when your ship is out! I'd agree that I couldn't get any useful (MRR) work done if I were on your ship. Hope whatever your mystery gift is, that it arrives soon, safe and sound.

Larry, I'd agree with you on the cold being worse than the white stuff. But it is good to hear that your older son is coming onboard (MRR-wise), even if his younger siblings got him into it out of sibling rivalry.

Krump, I'd say you got some of the same stuff we did her in Missouri (Southeast, that is - word this morning is that St. Louis didn't get the sNoah, but has the subzero temps(!)).

Luc, maybe we should include your local traffic forays in our prayers? Sounds like drivers there are every bit as wacko as anywhere else. Another reason I stay away from malls most of the time. Heck, I figure that the best LHS's are in the smaller strip malls, not in the biggies![:)][8D]

Well I think we are done... The CFO is tired but happy. Everything is wrapped, most of what needed to be delivered is gone. We are planning a quiet day tommorow 24th. The weather shows rain with a high around 50 F but cooling down to the freezing mark on Christmas day. We'll be going to our daugther's for dinner on that day.

Jim - I have travelled to many places and at this time of the year, it really does not matter, seems that in general, the Christmas spirit doesn't apply to driving. I know this does not apply to any of here. This is just an observation from me. [swg][swg]

I hit page 200 and I surrender! I can't go on anyfurther sir there's just too many of them and the weather is getting worse! Everybody compalaining about the weather.

Luc: Try Cayenne pepper it keeps cats and dogs at bay and if for some strange reason they like the pepper then i would suggest you spice it up with warfrin.

BTW it's good to be home though I figured I would be out over the holiday, though there's always that possibility. The Lobster Fishermen are still out but it's getting to the end of their season so most of the big ones have been caught.

Chris: Kudos on the 4 stars! I guess you'll be chomping at my rear door in the near future!

Tom: I have a Canon A300 and I like it though it can be confusing at times, then again it might help if I read the instructions.

JP: Leave is a touchy subject and one that is best left alone. As you know I work 28 days on/28days off, 12 hour days or watchesand on 1/2 hour standby.

I'm off for more then six months of the year and everyone thinks I live the life of Rielly. Well pretty close to it anyway. Take the hours worked and it comes very close to an office worker. I can't go home when my day is done for if I did I'd drown. I work in a inhospital and sometimes dangerous environment. But it's exciting if I'm not feeding the fish.

My month off is productive as I clean house, tend the garden, feed the kids, paint, scrub etc. and play with the trains. If I play with too many trains I get "The Look". If I do to many things on the Honey Do list the CFO gives me "The Look". Home repair can be expensive along with gardening and MR'ng.

I guess what I'm trying to say is the time off is good but it's not all about play. I did this a year ago and well it wasn't in my best interests. Everyone has to pitch in to make the household work. Lisa works a nine to five and gets three weeks off a year. If she didn't work, well one of my hobbies would be in recievership (you can guess which one) So count your blessings. And yes I clean bathrooms too and proud of it! (only way they'd pass inspection).

Ed: Time to make the donuts but this time save some for me please!

Anyway time for me to pack up and go home. I think I'll install the DCC onto the layout tonight !

Thank God, I say. Sitting at an airport on the East Coast when the weather folks are suggesting that the St; Louis area may get up to 5" is not fun. Anyway, it missed, and I got home and had a great evening running the layout with the kids. We got to run my Proto 2000 E7 tonight. Last week I had yanked the Proto light board and installed a decoder and wired it to run the Mars light. It works great and the Mars effect is far superior from the decoder than the Lifelike light board.

It's getting seriously cold in the mountains again. We'll be well down in the low teens or high single digits by morning. It doesn't look like we'll get any more snoah for a while, just clear and cold. That's OK, it will be beautiful, and we can dress warmly.

Louise is off tomorrow, so we're going to get out early and get the last of the last minute things done. No matter how early we start or how much we get done, there are always one or two things left to do on Christmas eve. That's part of the fun of it.

Progress continues on the mountains and the light mountain, although they haven't been priorities in the last day or so. I'm almost ready to start putting on the ground cover on the mountains. Then I get to start making trees.

Ed, I really like that - "Don't carve foam without it." Boy is that true. And do it early and often. But it's really cool stuff to work with

Simon, I'm glad you made it home. From what they're showing on CNN, that's a bad storm. Making it home for Christmas is one of the best things that can happen.

Teffy, we were easy to entertain, weren't we? We lived on a circle off a side road. We had a baseball diamond marked out on it, even though it was gravel over asphalt. Sliding into home wasn't a good idea, but it sure was fun. "Go outside and play" was sufficient instruction because it was a pretty safe environment.

Der, I've seen the King's College service before. It's wonderful. It's too bad they streched it way out for the extra commercials.

Lupo, I'd be glad to loan you some snoah, but it doesn't look like we're going to have any for a little while.

Fergie, welcome home. I'm glad you're going to be in for Christmas. Sounds like your getting a lot done this time out. That's cool.

Time for more Great Food in the Coffee Shop. The lunch in New Glasgow was meant to be at a certain hotel. We arrived after some maybe shopping (that's for things that aren't essential to the festivities, but maybe nice [:D]) to find that the dinning room was just closing for Christmas!!! [V] [:O] Turns out the place is up for sale, and I guess people could care less about service. Anyhow, the front desk person suggested a restaurant down the steeet that we didn't know about. Great meal, and ambience. [dinner] We won't be going back to the hotel regardless of when they reopen, if ever![tdn]

Fergie and Luc. The "New" hobby shop in NG is an urban myth. I checked at t he Town Office. The lady at the desk only knew about one new hobby or craft shop this year, Mary's Irish Rose. Didn't sound like a serious contender! She did phone the Downtown Development Office. The person to whom she spoke there knew of no new hobby stores, except the aforementioned MIR. She also said her husband was "into those things" and if there was a new shop, he would know, and he hadn't mentioned one. So, I guess that trail is cold. Pity.

Dan, [#welcome] You ask a very philosophical question "What are the stars for?" I've often wondered that, even when the attendance markers were badges in Sunday School, because it seems to me to be something like that. Thing is, enjoy the forum, drop by here for good company and knowledgeable tips on MRR, and much else besides.
Now, if you expand the meaning of your question to the stars in the sky, and ask what are they for?....we'll be off on another hunt that may take us down roads of mystery and wonder. When you consider that every atom in our bodies was made inside some star that has gone nova, or super nova, the answer to that question has huge possibilities.

Got to get some of that maybe shopping wrapped up.

Man, it has been awhile since I last posted in here. I've missed too much, and there is no possible way for me to catch up, so, I guess I'll just have to tag along in whatever is going on now. Every now and then, I may throw in my two cents, or maybe something totally random. Who knows?

I can't wait for tomorrow, Christmas Eve, the major rush day for everyone that wants to get someone a train for Christmas Day. Which means, plenty of work for me. And now, my job is better than before, since I got a raise. A WHOLE DOLLAR RAISE! Yeah, I'm making big money now[:D] Oh yeah. Well, I guess $6.50 an hour isn't bad for a teenager. It puts trains on the table.

Well I installed the Digitrax into the layout this evening and despite a few gremlins ripping up track and one or two dead spots that I knew about the MESS is now DCC and none too soon. One engine is hobbling and I don't know if it's dirt or a loose connection. I'll have to fingd out tomorrow. As far as the new "Mike" sorry I know it was a Christmas gift but quality assurance is job one on the MESS and man I can only say

Lupo- In about 10 days head down to the dock, I ran 30 unit trains of 200 cars each and sent you a super tanker of snow. And there's more where that came from!
We picked up about 10"s of the white devil, but it makes going home a 4-wheeling funfest. I still love a big snow, but now the deepfreeze opens for business here,
-4Ftonight and a high of 5F tomorrow. Way too cold for these old bones.
I remember taking my freshly built Moon Bus out in the snow when I was a kid, and pretending that we were exploring a frozen world. It seemes that I stayed outside for hours, even in single digit weather. I know that when you warmed up, your legs would itch like crazy! Still have that Moon Bus, it's about 35 years old now. Dear God.
Come to think of it, just 3 years ago I built a snow fort in my back yard and actually fell asleep during a snowstorm and laid out for about 3 hours. It was in the 20's, but just thinking about it today makes my hands ache! Ah, the old days.
Gonna pick up some Atlas tanks after C-mas, found a good supply of them in an RMC add. Figure I'll get 5-6 of 'em and bite the bullet on the cost. They are well built cars.

Hey Everybody,

I just made the best discovery....
sitting in the far corner of the Coffee Shop was a whole pile of storage, old coffee machines and other misc. junk... hasn't been cleaned up for a while so I thought I'd look for some Christmas decorations to spruce the place up a bit - curiousity got the best of me, so I went to check it out.
To my delight, I uncovered a full sized pool / billiards table... it's got everything...I found a few others and we managed to pull it out from the wall a bit and set it up. The pool table is now dusted off, vacuumed, spit-shined, and ready for use[:D] - since Fergie is back in town I thought I'd see if a few of you want to join us for a game, and a coffee of course. Starts in 10 minutes... (why did it take me 200 odd pages to discover this???)
this could lead into a regular event in the Coffee Shop - they say that the table is available to whomever is here, 24/7, so let's have some fun. Just put the cover on, when you're done, so others can have a turn.
I also heard tell of an old 5x9 pingpong table that could be suspended above the pool table - and periodically lowered down onto the (covered) pooltable. The ping-pong table is chipped a bit, no net, no paddles, and it looks like there may have been a half-hearted attempt at an N scale layout at one point. There is a box or two of N scale track there, so maybe we can get something running also... bring your tools, engines, extra track, buildings and imaginations, and come on out for a day of modelling. We have no power / transformer source yet, so that decision I leave with the Coffee Clubbers [:D][X-)][%-)][(-D][(-D][(-D][(-D][(-D][:-,][(-D]
( I'm kinda glad that it is N scale, because I can learn from you N ers out there, my experience is with the HO scale, so this is a New challenge for me)

Good Morning All:

A pool table is a good thing - It'll make a nice base for a small HO test layout. So lets get on with this project. I'll bring the Atlas and Walthers CD 83 track and a loco to test the electrical conn. We can use the new Empire Builder from Fergie as Lisa knows that it only cost $29.95 and isn't worried about the cost if it has to be replaced.

We closed the shop today and the Christmas guest have started to arrive, so we're going to have a good weekend.

Hoping all of you are settling in for a nice warm Christmas Eve, and planning on going to bed early so Santa can come.

Okay, it turned chilly again down here. It’s not exactly a White Christmas, but it’s cool enough to keep me happy. The forecast is for it to stay overcast for a few more days, so I expect it won’t warm up too much. I think we have everything we’re going to need, so hopefully the trip to the store I made this morning will be the last time I need to venture out for a couple of days.

Just relaxing right now. Got a nice album of Christmas music on, it’s “Christmas In The Mood” with Glenn Miller style Christmas songs. Glenn died long before his band ever did a Christmas album, but this one is done by musicians from the later “Glenn Miller Orchestras” and all the songs are arranged in unmistakable Miller style.

Well, I hope everyone is haveing as good a Christmas eve as I am, I'm in good spirits today. Went out for a good lunch at a resturaunt (the family dinner comes tommarrow), got over to Hillsboro, and found the old roadbed of the Shortline I'm researching over there, hopefully to model someday. I think I may also have found the old Depot Foundation, as the depot itself floated away in a flood about 40-50 years ago, I forget the exact date. Also got to get to the hobby shop over that way. Bought a Wide vision caboose, currently for the chessie, but I may paint it for the WSOR in a fictional scheme. See my website for a drawing of the scheme. I also have a triumph of yesterday to report, I used 91% rubbing alcohol to strip an old athearn GP38 shell, all is now a good for transformation to WSOR 3806, but first I need to get some small drill bits and the detail parts from the local hobby shop in Madison on Monday. One thing was though, all the paint stripped fine on the shell, but all the lettering was left on. It's not that big a deal, but I think I'll have to find a better way to strip it next time. All and all though, I'm happy.

Well, I better sign off, I got a few things left to do (namely model). Have a everybody!

What I wanted to do today was paint more of the messed up lower yard. I haven't got the "right" colour worked out yet, but the two shades I have tried have both dried so as to cover over the strange white stuff. I've got out some prototype photos of yards, but as the colour in each is different, I figure it doesn't matter what I use, so long as it ends up looking varied, and yet grungy cindery.

Guys I'm home for the holidays and that's a good thing, though my heart does go out to those less fortunate then I. To those with loved ones in far off lands my prayers and thoughts are with you. And to all of you who I have had the the chance to meet this year on this Forum, it's been a very positive experience. So please take care this Holiday Season and God willing we will have many many more.
