Found some good buys
Posted by Kenfolk on Thursday, May 14, 2009 10:32 PM

When traveling, I like to visit local train shops, layouts, etc. Visiting the Vero Beach, FL, area this week, I came across a LHS in Sebastian, called Riverside Hobbies. Very friendly and helpful. I found numerous good buys. He has not raised prices on anything already in stock. Its a small operation, but a good selection of n-scale (what I model) HO, and O.

It was one of those places that's just fun to look around--some of his inventory goes back a while. These kits should keep me off the streets and out of trouble for a while: a coal yard, grain elevator, and lumber mill. (Actually, my wife found the lumber mill, and wanted me to get it too!) I also found a Clinchfield coal hopper at a great price, and some other stuff.

I visited a couple others in Vero Beach that were not nearly as well-stocked, including one whose website bragged "over 20,000 items--all scales!". There, the sign on the door read: "Retail Hours: If we're here, we're open." When I called the phone number on the sign, the door was unlocked and I was allowed to enter a tiny, tiny showroom, with about 5 or 6 n-scale items. I spent all of 2 or 3 minutes there, after a 15 minute drive to get there.
