I like this forum, Something akin to the corner Barber Shop. Which to me means the discussions are varied and yes will get off topic from time to time. Yes agree that some of the Headers if not more discriptive will cause those with dial up more grief and yes I will endeavour to try to be more discriptive.

As for Bandwidth well that's another issue. Yes it may be too broad for some but from what I've seen a lot of us like it that way. As there is more to life than just Trains, More to life than counting rivets and more to life then......YOU KNOW

Some should get off their High Horses and find another rainbow to park on instead of trying to dictate to the rest of us on how we should conduct business or how we should spell. I have no time for purists who feel they are above the rest of us.

Bandwidth is dictated by the moderators, administrators and majority of users. So if you don't like the content find somewhere else to get a hair cut!
And if someone is wondering where this is coming from it's because a certain someone has made comments in the past regarding bandwidth that were curt and rather pointed and in my opinion rude and out of place.

This is a fun place to be without the sand box bullies.

for those with limited bandwith:
how slow is your connection anyway?
I tried this forum on 55k dialup speed and it loads OK, only when I limit the speed to 5K it gets slow
OTOH on a broadband connection the forum also loads slow sometimes, but I think that has more to do with the forum software / my ISP / my computer as with the connection speed.

BTW: If you do not want to waste bandwith you could try smoke-signals or jungle-drums, but I doubt if that gets your message around the world.[}:)] !

Actually, all the booze is derived from tried and true family recipies from the old country. And speaking of the Tender, Thank the lovely ladies in the locomotive for handling our train so smoothly so that we may enjoy our drinks. I think I should mention that our engineer is none other than Miss Phebe Snow herself.

I'm disappointed by those who have replied to this thread with sentiments along the lines of "take a chill pill, dude!", because it is clear that the point is being missed. All the talk about relative bandwidth and page load speeds also misses the point.

The point is common courtesy, and effective dialogue. There are a lot of very accomplished modelers roaming these pages, persons from whom I can learn a lot, if only I can wend my way to their helpful advice. Several times, I have initiated threads asking a very specific question in the title, only to get drowned out and ignored by all the other new threads, many of which could have been continuations of older threads rather than becoming new ones. Someone above had suggested subdividing the forums into narrower subject areas, but I fear doing so would not be an aid to anyone. So many posters do not abide by the four-category system we already have, and adding another category will just mean one more set of posts that I'll have to check when I log on.

I think the only real solution is this: natural selection. Those of us who care about careful discourse should seek out the threads which we believe to be good examples, and keep them alive by contributing, while imposing a sort of personal boycott of the inadequate ones. In other words, if you don't want to read threads which lack a descriptive title, then don't read them. You don't *HAVE* to read every post here; I'm definitely one who picks-and-chooses. Maybe, if we were all diligent about this, then the lesser threads would gradually die off, though this might be wishful thinking.

Your idea is reasonable. My connection speed on my home computer is "frustratingly slow". I admit noticing topics with vague titles and I do frown sometimes when I open it and the title and actual subject don't match. But I still do respond to them as most of the Topic Posters that are vague respond to my posts with supportive comments, which I appreciate.

I look at this issue as "part of the Forum's atmosphere". A person's emotional state is often at work when writing. Take into account that at the time someone is posting a Topic, whether the title is "clear or vague", they may be in a good, bad, sad, excited, mellow, or energetic mood. Reading carefully, you can often pick out certain moods on a post.

So hang in there, and don't feel that you were wrong as you make legitimate points, but be willing to be flexible also. The Forum does give us the opportunity to "let our hair down", relax, learn and enjoy interacting with people who share our passion for trains!

Those with broad views have a better view of the horizon and tend not to get sucker punched or run down by other wayward vessels!

I hate the Union Pacific, too. It's run by a bunch of businessmen. They can't spell and their grammer is bad. They have so much money and power, they can charge for their logo on model & toy trains. They used up all the band width, so the small guy has to have a slow computer! They sit there in their "Ivory Towers" and drink alcoholic beverages and laugh at us! They suck!

Well on spelling your out of luck mine is [tdn][*^_^*] too start with, the propper English spelling is different too the propper US spelling, and I would not be suprised if some on the forum come from Non English as a first laguage back grounds.
I have not been able too find a way to spell check ir to start with.
I figure if the message is got across and understandable enough too get a sesible answer then its OK
I do agree however the title of the post should reflect what the orriginal poster wants too know or comment about.

Hey, uh, guys.

Don't you think this is alot of cryong over spilled milk over a non-issiue. I mean its a forum about model railroading. A public forum none the less. No one says you have to read these things. Isn't model railroading supposed to be fun? All this complaining about bandwidth is a little deaf to my ears. In Wyoming the only affordable internet service is dial up. If you think that drives you nuts, if your a model railroader in Wyoming, you practicly have to stock your own personal hobby store becase there is only one in the entire state.

So I offer again. Can I get anyone a drink?

You just never know where a posted opinion will tak you, eh? I feel as the originator of this topic that I must respond to a couple of things.

First, IF I had complained about the speed of this forum the bandwidth comments and suggestions might have been legitimate. I did not complain about forum speed, however. I admited that I have 55k dial-up connection and that it takes a little time for pages to come up. This was not my complaint. My complaint was that misleading or meaningless topic titles meant that I either take a chance on missing good content or take a chance on wasting my time chasing nothing. I am well aware that I don't HAVE to read any topics here, but that is not the point. People don't HAVE to us meaningless titles either.

The second issue I must reply to is responses to other responders. I work for a living and have a quite busy life. I really enjoy this forum and get on to check out topics and reply most evenings. Sometimes I miss an evening or two. This is a good example. I posted this topic on the 27th and didn't get back to check it out until the 29th. I don't have the luxury of being able to leave it up and running to reply to every post and reply that comes along. My point is this, If I don't reply in what seems to you to be a "timely" manner (i.e. immediately), forgive me. I will get back and reply as soon as i possible can.

Finally, I reiterate what I said in my ititial post. I didn't post this because I was angry, stressed out, etc. I am simply making a suggestion that I believe will make this forum easier to negotiate and more enjoyable for myself and many others who love to come here.

Before posting a topic:
look if somebody did not post a similar topic before you start one,
(look back 1 or 2 pages)
sometimes I see topics on one page with different titles, dealing with similar issues, confusing if you want to reply, irritating if you want to follow the replys and the forum-speed is slow or stalling, and forcing interesting topics to the "backroom" within a day

my bandwith remarks were a reaction to some replys where bandwith came up, as it usually does on topics dealing with contents / grammar / spelling
What I meant to say: even with a 1024K connection the forum can sometimes load dead-slow and can be very irritating

I agree that sometimes titles need to be a bit more descriptive and such..vice "need help", or "question". I don't think many folks, particularly the new folks, realize how many times those titles have appeared. But since James is buying, how bout joining Vsmith and I for a pint. [:)]

Let's see. Hmmmm. No one follows the current topics in the MR forums and those that respond are not sufficiently erudite to develop meaningful descriptive titles. Yes, yes. The solution is very obvious, very obvious indeed. We will just create so many main title headings that no one can keep up, and we will send out the PC Police to behead anyone that might think to enter a topic without prior approval of, of, of? Who the h-ll is going to give the approval? Hmmmm. This is most deplorable, most deplorable indeed. Maybe we can take names for volunteers to exercise dictatorial control of the forums. Maybe we can develop separate forums for those not fortunate enough to have a high speed connection. Yes, those with dial-up connections will be treated like star belly sneetches, cast out from the more elite group. Yes, what a grand idea. And those lesser folk will be limited to the purchase of only one Kalmbach book a year, and we can set their subscriptions up on a 6 month basis. If they do not measure up, they do not get to renew. And if they cannot renew, they will be allowed to purchase only used railroad materials manufactured prior to 1949. What diabolical fun this is going to be. I can hardly wait. And, yes, if anyone wants to do penance so they can gain re-entry they will need to win the national spelling bee. Oh my, oh my. Won't it just be simply marvelous?
