Bed time Story
Posted by airwolf crazy on Friday, April 24, 2009 7:31 AM

Greetings,

I am pretty sure that I have hooked my son on this hobby and trains in general.

Last night when my wife and I were getting our son ready for bed he brought me two things to read.  The first was classic book Rainbow Fish.  The second was the current issue of Trains.  He sat through almost and entire article too.

Whistling

Morning Christopher,

What a great way to get your son started, in both railroading and fishing. The world needs more Dads like you.

Kalmbach used to have a magazine called "Model Trains" many years ago. But it was such a great mag. as it

was serious but not for rivet counters. There was lots of youth entries but they also did Editor trips to smaller layouts

and lots of articles on scratching building structures and rolling stock that most people regardless of age could handle.

That is what I cut my teeth on and I still have them in my collection. There was also a section that actually did what our forums do today in

regard to questions and answers.

Keep up the good work, he does look pretty interested.Tongue

Best wishes,

 Christopher,

keep up the good work - we need to take of the next generation of railroad enthusiasts and moderl railroader.

When my son was a baby, I kept on telling him little railroad stories at bed time, but somehow it did not work out. Computer games were much more attractive and he could not understand, why his father was "playing" with trains". Now he has just turned 22 and guess what? Yes, he has started model railroading!

All of a sudden I am so proud of him ...Big Smile

"Tootle" was one of my favorites.  My first layout was in my folks room, mom always said I drove dad crazy, he wanted to lay in bed and watch the train go round and round.  I wouldn't let it do that, kept stopping and reversing it.  Guess he was a road engineer, I was a yard man.  Still have some of the old Lionel around, but have gone to HO.  Think mother was behind my love of trains though, she had traveled around the country by train in her work during the 30's.  She took my friend and I on one of the last regularly scheduled STEAM passenger runs on the Rutland, a fond memory despite few photos.  We used to stop at Manchester Depot to watch the trains go through, even when we weren't meeting the train for a reason.

Hope he stays interested.

Have fun,

Christopher ,Thumbs Up thumbs up to you ! Great looking Boy and I am sure you are a proud Papa. I am so encouraged to see men being active in their childrens life. A member of my family is in the public school system and they tell me stories of how childrens parents are so sorry they will not even bother to drive out to the playing fields to pick them up after football , soccer practice. And we wonder why our country is getting warped ? There is an Old saying - train a child up in the way he should go and when he is old he will not depart from it - I am sure your son will be a great man because of the time you spend now.Smile
