Walthers chain link fence kit
Posted by Medina1128 on Thursday, April 23, 2009 11:08 PM

In the April 2009 issue of Model Railroader Pelle Søeborg wrote an article about how to "Improve a Walthers chain link fence. In the article, Pelle suggests drilling a .020" hole perpendicular to each fence post to intall wire. He didn't mention HOW to drill them. I have a couple of suggestions.

  • Drill the holes while the fence posts are still attached to the sprues as Pelle suggested.
  • I used a cut tongue depressor to support the parts as I drilled them.
  • Make starter holes in the fence posts using the tip of a new #11Xacto knife blade. A couple of turns is all that's needed. I used the metal wires that came in the kit, instead of the .019" brass wire that Pelle used. I'd have used the brass wire he suggested, but I had a later kit that came with wire instead of the plastic rod that came in older kits.
  • I drilled the holes with a #72 drill bit.

Although it DOES test one's patience to drill that many holes, it sure makes it easier to drill them using the suggestions listed above.
